Like as if they were digging for that gem in a vinyl shop, Deadline reports that Dekanalog have lassoed three sturdy titles from film festival editions past. They nabbed the sophomore feature by Agnieszka Smoczynska in Fugue — the 2018 pick (which we’ve got to say remains her best work to date after having reviewed The Silent Twins just two weeks back) was a highlight at the Critics Week section that year. And speaking of Cannes, they grabbed the 2021 Un Certain Regard preemed Streetwise (Gaey Wa’r) by Jiazuo Na. Finally, they grabbed a solid directorial debut by Emre Kayiş in Anatolian Leopard – a TIFF selection for last year’s edition.…...

Exclusive: Dekanalog has picked up Streetwise, Anatolian Leopard and Fugue, three buzzy international films.
The outfit, which launched in 2020 to focus on shopping international films to U.S. audiences, has taken global rights to the trio and plans to launch them within the calendar year.
Cannes favourite Streetwise is a Chinese film from Jiazuo Na and follows Dongzi, a small-town debt collector trying to pay off his sick father’s hospital bill.
Anatolian Leopard charts the relationship between a lonely manager and neglected female officer who form an unlikely bond at Turkey’s oldest zoo, involving themselves in an absurd charade that spins out of control, while Agnieszka Smoczynska’s Fugue tells of a mother who suffers memory loss and returns to her family looking familiar but behaving like a stranger.
The trio have all performed well with critics.

At first, it might seem strange that experimental Polish director Agnieszka Smoczyńska chose for her third film a social justice drama about a pair of Black British twins and amateur novelists locked up for petty crimes. But the filmmaker’s esoteric style — “The Lure” was a bloody, lesbian take on “The Little Mermaid” — makes more sense once we get to meet June Gibbons (Letitia Wright) and her sister Jennifer (Tamara Lawrence). Identical twins born 10 minutes apart, June and Jennifer invent an entire language only for each other — and are despondent when anyone else tries to invade their fun. Smoczyńska illustrates the eccentric stories they tell each other with stop-motion puppets, musical montages and, in one Andy Warhol-inspired set piece, a deep pool of Pepsi washing ’round a living room.
Where “The Silent Twins” fails, however, is in tying that childlike expressionism to the stark grimness of the Gibbons’ real lives.

Just two feature films in (2015’s The Lure and 2018’s Fugue), Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczyńska has built a rabid fan base – us included. It’s no wonder she has been attached to a handful of projects since cementing her unique voice among filmmakers woith the sophomore film being presented at the Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week. Among our most anticipated items for what we thought would be a 2021 drop, her third feature (and first English language project) was picked up by the Focus Features folks back in April for what will be 2022 drop. Starring Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance, Focus describe Silent Twins as “a luminous, magical world”…exploring “themes of love, longing, identity”.…...

Korean director Hong Eui-jeong’s debut feature “Voice of Silence” stood out at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival as the year’s best film from its Cheval Noir main competition section. The film, about two men who clean up after an organized crime organization, has enjoyed an impressive international festival run, having built up strong buzz as a project when it was selected to Venice’s Biennale College Cinema program in 2016.
“In a film festival that’s known as a melting pot of genres, ‘Voice of Silence’ feels like an excellent representative for the top prize in the Cheval Noir section. It’s earnest and sincere in tone but also unpredictable and experimental, impossible to pin down, and truly idiosyncratic,” said the jury in a statement accompanying the announcement.

It’s been such a long wait for the release of the new film from Wes Anderson that the filmmaker himself is already prepping to shoot his next film this summer. 2021, however, is finally the year of The French Dispatch and ahead of a Cannes Film Festival debut, a stateside premiere at New York Film Festival, and a release on October 22, we’ve now got another tease in the form of the official soundtrack details and a preview.
Made up of 25 tracks, the score comes from Anderson’s recent frequent collaborator Alexandre Desplat as well piano solos performed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet, notes Film Music Reporter, who revealed the first details. Also including songs by Grace Jones, Ennio Morricone, Jarvis Cocker, Chantal Goya, and more, we’ve collected the currently available tracks on a Spotify playlist. Exclusive: Here’s a cool-sounding Euro package. Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczyńska, who will helm her English-language debut Silent Twins starring Letitia Wright this fall, has been set to direct dystopian crime drama Hot Spot.
Producers are Klaudia Smieja-Rostworowska at Poland’s Madants, who produced Claire Denis’ High Life and Agnieszka Holland’s Mr Jones, alongside Before Midnight producer Christos V. Konstantakopoulos at Greek production outfit Faliro House.
Jan Naszewski’s New Europe Film Sales, which is repping rights on buzzy 2020 Cannes label title Sweat and has also been inking deals this week on Noomi Rapace starrer Lamb, has boarded world rights to the pic.
Poland has been on a roll in recent years, delivering acclaimed features including the Oscar-nominated trio Cold War, Corpus Christi and Loving Vincent. Smoczyńska herself helmed 2016 Sundance World Cinema Dramatic jury prize winner The Lure and 2018 Cannes premiere Fugue.
For Hot Spot, she is re-teaming with The Lure scribe Robert Bolesto.

Exclusive: Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War star Letitia Wright is set to lead cast in Agnieszka Smoczynska’s (Fugue) English-language debut The Silent Twins.
Wright will star alongside rising Brit actress Tamara Lawrance (The Long Song) in the movie which is being produced by Kindred Spirit’s Anita Gou (The Farewell), 42’s (Ironbark) Ben Pugh and Joshua Horsfield, and Madant’s Klaudia Smieja-Rostworowska (High Life).
Andrea Seigel’s (Laggies) script is based on the well-received book The Silent Twins by investigative journalist Marjorie Wallace. The chilling true story follows twin sisters who were entirely silent, communicating only to each other in a private language. They became obsessed with writing fiction, boys, and crime in their teens but their intense bond ultimately turned into something more dangerous.
The drama, which is due to shoot in April, is being financed by Kindred Spirit and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute and Moderator Inwestycje.

Though Jan Komasa’s “Corpus Christi” was a dark horse in the best international feature film category at this year’s Academy Awards, it should have come as no surprise to see a Polish director walking the red carpet outside the Dolby Theatre on Feb. 9. “Corpus Christi” was the country’s third Oscar nomination in the past six years for what was formerly known as the foreign-language film, joining Paweł Pawlikowski’s 2019 nominee “Cold War” and Pawlikowski’s 2015 winner “Ida.”

He may be known for visiting restaurants across the country on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, but Guy Fieri says that he actually doesn’t eat out that much in his day-to-day life. In fact, he prefers to keep things healthy at home with whole grains and lots of greens.
“I eat out less at restaurants than anybody you’ve ever met, because I do a lot of that on ,” the Food Network Star told People. “My favorite thing to do in the world is cook ”
And despite the fame he’s garnered from his culinary talent, Fieri says that was never the goal.

When I was seven-years old I had a Kool-Aid stand and with my profits bought my very first album -- The Beatles' Second Album. I remember walking the several blocks to the Acme store and praying that they still had a copy in the album rack. They did. I couldn't wait to get home and play it on my portable record player. I carefully placed the needle on the very first track on side one of that magnificent album and... my life would forever be devoted to music in some shape or form. On that beloved album, the very first track was my favorite song -- "Roll Over Beethoven" -- by one Mr. Chuck Berry. At the time, I had no idea who wrote the song nor much cared. It was all about The Beatles. But as almost everyone knows, Chuck Berry wrote and recorded it years earlier. And...

I’ll confess. I have a real mushy soft spot for Heavy Metal music. Back in the ‘80s, in my teen years, my buddy Nick and I would crank the latest from Kiss, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Cinderella, etc. And there’s something specifically about Metal tailored to teenagers – that heightened sense of drama we feel at that age, the hormonal urges, and the need to push back against ‘society’. (Right – but please give us our allowances to consume products, okay?)
But Metal also equated with power, which was aligned with evil, and before long, many parents came up with the notion that Metal was Satan’s music. (Is the Pmrc still a thing? Brr.) Well, marketing is marketing, and few Metal bands fought the label (hell, some even embraced it). So it seemed the timing was right for that satanic safe haven, the Horror Film, to meet up with the...

March’s home entertainment releases are ending on a quiet note, as we’ve only six titles arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday. Scream Factory has their Cherry Falls and Murders in the Rue Morgue / The Dunwich Horror double feature Blus for you guys to look forward to, and Vinegar Syndrome is keeping quite busy themselves with three different releases: Frightmare, Pigs, and their Revenge of the Virgins / Teenage Zombies double feature. Last but certainly not least, the Christopher Lee cult classic The City of the Dead is also getting the HD treatment on March 29th as well.

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Click here for a complete list of our essays. How to decide in the grand scheme of things which film year stands above all others? History gives us no clear methodology to unravel this thorny but extremely important question. Is it the year with the highest average score of movies? So a year that averages out to a B + might be the winner over a field strewn with B’s, despite a few A +’s. Or do a few masterpieces lift up a year so far that whatever else happened beyond those three or four films is of no consequence? Both measures are worthy, and the winner by either of those would certainly be a year not to be sneezed at. But I contend the only true measure of a year’s...

Cling. Clang. Crash. Welcome to the category of Best Sound Editing, which awards the creation and integration of artificial sounds into a movie's soundtrack. This distinguishes this category from Best Sound Mixing, which awards the mixing of the film's overall soundtrack. Due to the emphasis on creating artificial sounds, action films and war films tend to do particularly well here. The branch is also not afraid to give a film a standalone nomination (this decade, that has included "All is Lost," "Tron: Legacy," "Drive" and "Unstoppable"). In the not-too-distant past, animated films were also practically annual staples, which is unsurprising given the need to manifest everything you hear in such productions. The sound branch has its favorite contenders who regularly return. Names like Richard Hymns and Wylie Stateman immediately jump to mind. This is likely the case to a greater extent in Sound Editing than Sound Mixing. But every year also sees new nominees.

When Hell Horror ran this cast photo of the second of the web series "Mortal Kombat: Legacy," I knew the moment had come: it was time to introduce those of you who weren't aware of it to one of the great martial arts comedies featuring Kadeem Hardison and a stolen Yakuza cyborg heart of the 90's.
"Drive."
"Drive" stars martial artist and sometimes Iron Chef Chairman Mark Dacascos, a performer who really should have broken out in a bigger way than he did in the late 90's and beginning of this decade. Sure, he's done not-great stuff like the live-action "Double Dragon" movie, but he's also the reason "Brotherhood of the Wolf" was such a great kick-in-the-chest piece of martial arts/horror/action back in the day.
A natural performer with a much easier charisma than some of his contemporaries (Jeff Speakman, anyone), the most fun I've had watching him...

Repo Man
Comedy, thriller, satire, science fiction, punk rock movie: Repo Man is all these things. And none of them. Perhaps these hard-to-classify qualities are the reason why it's still watched today while many far more financially successful movies of the time are forgotten. It's like a drive-in movie scripted by Philip K Dick. But not. Both utterly of and completely out of its time, Alex Cox's 1984 feature debut trades in typical Us iconography such as cars and guns but in an off-kilter fashion. For Cox the mundane is exotic, the exotic is mundane. He delivers a view of the Us that American directors either wouldn't or couldn't – shooting around a landmark-free downtown La, something the recent Drive was enthusiastically praised for. Emilio Estevez plays disillusioned youth Otto, who falls in with a team of automobile repossessors as they search for a Chevy Malibu with a high bonus and...

Now this is, shall we say, interesting! It seems that two sequels we've all been "waiting" for have made their way to a single theatre in California and will be playing in a double feature tonight. Oh, the horror!
That's right, kids. Thanks to DC reader Corbin921 we've been alerted of this cinematic happening that's bound to be nothing short of a gala event! Both the Doug Bradley-less Hellraiser: Revelations and Joel Soisson's Children of the Corn: Genesis will be playing Tonight at the Rave Motion Pictures 18 + IMAX, 6081 Center Drive, Los Angeles, CA - (310) 215-3483. Click here for showtimes.
If only Foy lived in La. We're gonna try to get someone over there for some reviews. I'm sure both flicks have such sights to show us!

Garden gnomes did well in the half-term holidays, but Yogi Bear and Tangled also kept things in the family
The winner
During a February half-term holiday with no shortage of cinema choices for families, the big winner turned out to be Gnomeo and Juliet, from David Furnish and Sir Elton John's Rocket Pictures. Rising 13% from the previous weekend, the lawn-ornament animation saw its cumulative total rise by £6.5m over the past seven days, an average of nearly £1m per day. With £12.9m in UK box office so far, the film is now the 20th biggest earner of the past year, after just 17 days of release. The film did not exactly take a smooth journey to the screen, and the success here and in the Us (where it has taken $74m) is a testament to the patient shepherding of the project through its long development by Rocket. Kudos, likewise, to UK distributor Entertainment One,...

The Hangover: Part Two
Opens: May 26th 2011
Cast: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifinakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong
Director: Todd Phillips
Summary: Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned.
Analysis: It really wasn't until about three months before its release that Warner Brothers realised "The Hangover" was going to be a hit. Test screening response was through the roof, while the trailer had great reaction after premiering at ShoWest and online. About that time they commissioned director Todd Phillips, along with his "Old School" and "Road Trip" scribe Scot Armstrong, to pen a sequel. Yet they still waited to see how the first one went before fully committing to the follow-up.
The wait didn't last long.

Before he was announcing ingredients with campy flair on “Iron Chef America”, Mark Dacascos was a bonafide B-movie action star. Even if you haven’t seen “Drive” and “Crying Freeman” — two of the martial arts wizards most entertaining endeavors — there’s a strong possibility that you’ve seen “Brotherhood of the Wolf” and “Crade 2 the Grave”. Regardless of how piss poor the movies may be, Dacascos is always a treat, particularly when he’s kicking ass with awe-inspiring fluidity. The man’s latest effort, the Turkish action flick “Sultanin Sirri”, looks pretty darn snazzy, and even if it sucks to the heavens upon high, you know there’s a strong possibility that Dacascos is going to make somebody bleed. That’s all an action guy like me can ask for, really. Kudos to Twitch for supplying the goods.

Everyone's favorite Iron Chef - not to mention a former Crow and cult favorite thanks to films like Drive and Crying Freeman - is headed to Turkey.
Mark Dacascos has a key role in Sultanin Sirri, an upcoming Turkish action film. Dacascos plays an American agent in the picture which aims to provide a Turkish spin on the international espionage / terrorism genre and if the first trailer is any indication the production values on this are actually quite good. Check it out below.

We've all been there. Come with me back to 1988. Sitting in a darkened theatre waiting for Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood to begin. There was lots of butchering that went on in this film, but it wasn't Jason doing it. Fast forward to Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. Throats get slit but don't bleed. Heads get knocked off dry and clean. Was it Mr. Voorhees that was bloodthirsty, or was it the MPAA?
These are just two examples of how this group of people have been collectively neutering not only some of our favorite movies but also the visions of many great artists out there who are proud to be working in our genre.
Working on various sites over the last ten years and finally ending up here at Dread Central, I've had the benefit of working with and listening to a lot of fans and professionals.

Instead of commenting on the latest TV show, comic book, or superheroine, I’ve decided to fire a shot in a war that’s raged for decades: PC or Mac? For 5 years I’ve had one Hp desktop PC at home and used several Mac desktops and laptops in the office.
I’ve finally decided to buy a new computer and because I work in the business of show, I will soon be drafted into the Mac army. I will use my new laptop for both home and work to edit, create flash animations, surf the net, write columns, listen to music, and watch TV.
Before apple juice is spilled and I’m forced to yet again hear about the greatness of Macs, you need to know I do not consider myself to be a tech guru or a first adopter. I have, however, been on computers since the age...

As you've probably heard, adorable actress Brittany Murphy has left us. Murphy reportedly died suddenly of heart failure on Sunday morning. She was 32. While known for spunky and flirtatious work in Clueless (and the Mark Dacoscas actioner Drive, a personal fave), she showed a serious side in films like 8 Mile, Girl Interrupted, Sin City and Don't Say A Word. Murphy was preparing to reprise her role in a sequel to Happy Feet. Our sister site Movie Hotties has lovingly memorialized...

In a tragic turn of events, Brittany Murphy has died at the age of 32. The actress went into cardiac arrest early Sunday morning in LA, and, despite being rushed to hospital, she was dead on arrival.Murphy had her big film break at the age of 18 in Clueless. She appeared as Tai, one of the bubbly sidekicks to Alicia Silverstone's Cher. From there, she scored small roles in the likes of Drop Dead Gorgeous and Drive, before winning some kudos for her performance in Girl, Interrupted. Bigger parts followed, including leads in Cherry Falls, Don't Say A Word and an emotional turn alongside rapper Eminem in 8 Mile. More recently, she appeared in Just Married with then-boyfriend Ashton Kutcher and Uptown Girls with Dakota Fanning. She played Shellie for Robert Rodriguez in Sin City and also voiced Gloria in Happy Feet. Multiple sites, including TMZ, are now reporting that actress Brittany Murphy, seen most recently in Across the Hall, died this morning at the age of 32 in Los Angeles. The reports indicate that she went into full cardiac arrest and could not be revived. No other information is known about her death, besides that it occurred at the home of her husband Simon Monjack this morning at around 8Am. This is incredibly tragic especially considering she was still a young budding actress with quite a bit of potential. While she wasn't the most popular actress, she will certainly be remember for her many great appearances in many films. Murphy began her acting career at the age of 14 starring on "Drexell's Class". She has appeared in films like Clueless, Drive, Falling Sky, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Girl Interrupted, Cherry Falls, Don't Say a Word, Riding in Cars with Boys, 8 Mile, Uptown ...

I was reading an article in “Empire Magazine” which mentioned that Nathan Fillion makes every film he’s in at least 25% better. This got me thinking, who else makes films more watchable even if the movies are terrible to begin with? So I compiled a list (in no particular order), of those actors and actresses who whether it’s through enthusiasm, comedy value or just sheer presence, make whatever film they’re in just that little bit more exciting. Feel free to disagree with my opinions below. 1. Mark Dacascos Ignoring Amazing films like “Drive” and “Brotherhood of the Wolf”, and pretty good films like “Only the Strong”, Mark Dacascos has been in some shit. No matter though, because the mere fact that any of these turds stars Dacascos causes them to be polished to a degree only some sort of industrial buffer could achieve. Yes, Mark Dacascos is the heavy...

Remember that Wolverine movie, all those months ago? It did well enough, and by well enough I mean that it made enough money for the studio to want a second serving. The Hollywood sequel machine never stops eating profits and crapping out more movies. This is just one of those Hollywood trends that we are supposed to get used to. Some studios are taking notice and getting some real talent to helm these sequels. Was that a great seq way or what? As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Valkyrie scribe Christopher McQuarrie has been tapped on the shoulder for the new sequel for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Did I forget to mention that prequels are getting unwarranted sequels now? Well, at least they were able to secure some talent on this one. McQuarrie is most famous for being involved with almost every Bryan Singer film ever. He wrote Valkyrie, and some of my favorite sets of dialog in...

Retro Dreams: Director Wyatt Weed ponders the state of film and how he got here. For most people, dreams don’t come true.
Sure, sometimes you marry your childhood sweetheart, or get the job that you really wanted, the one with the great benefits and the sense of security, but rarely does the childhood dream come true: astronaut, president, secret agent.
For me, the dream has come true – and it is an amazing experience to be aware of it as it happens.
When I was 5, man landed on the moon. I was enthralled, and subsequently committed to being an astronaut for at least the next 6 years – until I saw a movie called “Jaws”, that is. Jaws made me aware of movie making and movie magic, but what I gravitated toward was oceanography. I was obsessed with the study of sharks for at least the next two years of my young life.

Fangoria: I know you’ve got a history in the marketing/sales field, how does having that experience help you in the film industry?...
