A haunted house film is a tough sell. No masked stalker, no creatures that eviscerate and certainly no zombies lurching down those shadowed halls. A single setting, a dark secret, a group of people terrified by something is usually your standard template, and even the best haunted house flick doth not stray from the formula. So the trick is to convince the viewers once you get them inside – something that the low on budget, high on conviction, and seldom talked about The Evil (1978) accomplishes admirably.
Barely distributed in May of ‘78 by Roger Corman’s New World Pictures, The Evil was made for $700,000 Us and came and went very quickly. The filmmakers complained about the paltry distribution, but I’m sure Corman turned a profit somewhere down the line – he usually did. So from the modest budget, to the generic sounding title (why not just call it Horror Movie?) to the not exactly topical sub genre,...

19-2? Precinct 19, Car 2. It’s simple as that. A series title that upholds a long-standing tradition of cop shows throughout the years that use designators in their titles, from the likes of Car 54 Where Are You? to the more recent 10-8: Officers on Duty. 19-2 also continues the more modern tradition of the gritty cop drama, heavily influenced by the likes of cable TV dramas The Shield and The Wire – with the same hardened sensibilities, only this time with a Canadian twist…
Interestingly, 19-2 – as seen on this DVD – is not the original version of the show. This particular iteration of the cop drama is actually an Englich-language remake of the series, which was originally set in Montreal and filmed entirely in French.

Recently, I’ve had the good fortune of having one of my hobbies turn into a freelance job. I’ll be editing translated manga into casual English for a major distributor of yaoi titles. In Japan, these homoerotic stories are sold in magazines that can be purchased almost everywhere. There are even anime versions running on TV. That there is enough of a market here for more than one distributor making money importing and translating them is pretty amazing. But times are changing for those of us who have long read and written slash fiction based on TV shows.
Despite popular opinion amongst critics, slash in fanfiction usually doesn’t spring from a vacuum. [Yes, I said usually. I am well aware of pairings that would make a stomach turn like Legolas/Sauron or even Jean-Luc Picard/Elrod the Elf guy, and I am reminded that there exists Icabod/Horseman slash. Heck, I once did quite a rant on a panel about bizarre pairings that ended with me suggesting that even Opie/Barney Fife was fair game in some Slashers' eyes]. Thankfully, this strangeness is a minor part of Slash Fanfiction. Typically, there is smoke that inspires that fire in the writers.
They call them Bromances now, but the phenomena has been around for a long, long time.

Big news, One Tree Hill fans. We just got back from visiting the Wilmington, Nc set of "One Tree Hill," where a particularly coy Sophia Bush teased, "You're going to meet someone who's very relevant to Brooke's life who you've wanted to see for 8 years."
After 8 years on the show, Sophia's gotten good at keeping her secrets. Fortunately for you all, we are not so good. Zap2it has confirmed that Richard Burgi will play Brooke's wealthy absentee dad, who will make his first appearance on screen after being absent from the biggest moments in Brooke's life. He's a recurring guest, so we can expect him to stick around a bit. It's about time!
A TV veteran, Burgi recently starred as Karl on "Desperate Housewives," and is also known for his work on "The Sentinel" and "Days of Our Lives." We can't wait to see the fireworks when Daddy Davis...

To start with the good news, Sasha Roiz will be back on TV every week this fall. His new show, Grimm, has been picked up to series by NBC. Spoiler TV has the first still from the pilot, which was written and exec produced by David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, and we'll probably get more details about the show after the upfronts. For now, here are the basics, from TV Line:
A fantastical drama, Grimm stars David Giuntoli (Privileged) as a detective whose mission is to protect humans living in a world where Grimm’s Fairy Tale characters actually exist. Silas Weir Mitchell (Prison Break), Sasha Roiz (Caprica) and Kate Burton also star. The bad news from NBC is that 17th Precinct didn't make the cut. Not much to add that hasn't been said at the Battlestar Blog.
David E. Kelley's take on Wonder Woman hasn't been picked up either.

Thq's "Red Faction" games have gone from surprise hit to all-out media assault in the last few years. Comics based on the IP are already out in the wild and the next piece of the multimedia puzzle will now premiere on SyFy on June 4th.
I've written previously about how the "Red Faction: Origins" TV movie will bridge the gap between "Red Faction: Guerilla" and the soon-to-be-released "Red Faction Underground." But, the cable network has only just announced the airdate for the new show. It's got a 9 P.M. Et/Pt timeslot and stars the liquid-metal Terminator himsle, Robert Patrick as an older Alec Mason.
And if you're looking for synchronicity, the two-hour movie comes out only days after the May 31st launch of the new game. Pertinent details from the press release follow:
Directed by Peabody-Award winner Michael Nankin (Caprica, Battlestar Galactica, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), Red Faction: Origins...

Whenever Guillermo del Toro has done interviews in the past few months, he's talked about learning and becoming well-versed in all the different entertainment mediums. In particular, he's pointed to video games as a place where story telling has great potential but he's never gotten more specific than that. We now know what del Toro has been talking about. The director behind Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy and the upcoming [1] At the Mountains of Madness has partnered with Thq to produce a potential trilogy of video games called inSANE which he describes as “Lovecraftian horror adventure” with a “pulp narrative and creatures with tentacles.” It's not scheduled for release until 2013 but you can see a teaser trailer for the game and read more about it after the jump. First of all, here's the trailer of inSANE which premiered on the the Spike TV Video Game Awards. “With this new series of video games,...

If a major video game company tells you that they're not trying to take their intellectual property to TV or movie screens, they're lying. Mass-market video games cost load of money and, like any investment, finding as many ways to profit from it as possible makes good business sense.
Thq VP of Core Games Danny Bilson tweeted that "Red Faction: Origins"--the in-production adaptation of the publisher's futuristic action games--will be heading to the SyFy network in May, instead of March as originally planned. The descriptions from the original press release follow:

MADRID -- NBC Global Networks and Spain's Sogecable have signed a deal for the Sci Fi Channel to launch June 1 in Spain on Sogecable-owned satellite platform Digital Plus. Launched in the U.S. in 1992, Sci Fi already has international versions operating in the U.K., Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France. The agreement with Sogecable is nonexclusive for Spain, paving the way for the channel to grow onto the burgeoning broadband and cable markets in the country. Sci Fi Spain's initial programming lineup will include the Spanish debuts of series Stargate Atlantis and Tremors, plus 7 Days, American Gothic, The Sentinel, Battlestar Galactica, Earth 2, The Incredible Hulk and The Invisible Man. The deal follows the debuts of new terrestrial broadcasters Cuatro and La Sexta -- launched in November and March, respectively. Both nets are betting heavily on U.S. series in their programming lineups.
