Chicago – Opening this weekend at Chicago’s Facets Cinematheque after a week on VOD is “Starred Up,” a bloody-knuckles British prison drama that was also a favorite at the most recent Chicago Critics Film Festival. This is an at-times beastly movie that follows in the line of previous character-driven jail films like “Chopper” (starring Eric Bana), or Tom Hardy’s raging breakout movie “Bronson”.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
While this movie may not have the narrative muscle of these references, this odyssey into a hidden world does feature two actors well on their way to becoming global obsessions, Jack O’Connell and Ben Mendelsohn.
O’Connell plays Eric Love, a raging teenager dumped into an adult prison to carry out a drug-related sentence. After asserting his power to his fellow inmates with an act of violence (and nearly killing someone albeit unintentionally), he makes a connection with his father Neville (Ben Mendelsohn) who...

Scott Derrickson, as evidenced by this interview, is one of the most thoughtful, sure-handed American directors the genre has working in the field today. If you’re not convinced of that after Sinister alone, then Deliver Us From Evil just might make you a believer.
Inspired by the true events of officer Ralph Sarchie and his dealings with the occult and assistance with actual exorcisms in some of the darkest corners of New York City, Derrickson and company will do their worst in trying to convince us that these occurrences are based in fact.
In doing so, Derrickson will also probably wind up scaring the crap out of you.
When we spoke to Derrickson on set in the South Bronx back in July of 2013, his usual soft, inviting demeanor was still on full display even though he was neck deep in the minute-to-minute stress of shooting a nuanced film that...

With Deliver Us From Evil now in theaters, I recently had the opportunity to interview director Scott Derrickson. We started by talking about him working on Deliver Us From Evil’s script back in 2004 and I learned about his reasons for casting Eric Bana, shooting in the Bronx, the real Ralph Sarchie, and his interest in a sequel. Derrickson also has a number of projects coming up, so I got a status update on Sinister 2 and asked him about taking on Doctor Strange:
Jerry Bruckheimer had the rights to Deliver Us From Evil for nearly ten years before the movie began filming. At what point did you come onto the project?
Scott Derrickson: The book is what started the whole process and Jerry Bruckheimer optioned the rights. He was looking for someone to adapt the book and I was hired back in 2004 to write the first draft of the script.

Today, Scott Derrickson’s gritty supernatural thriller Deliver Us from Evil arrives in theaters and, during a recent press day, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with co-star Edgar Ramirez about his role in the film as a struggling priest who must overcome great odds to battle evil.
Ramirez also chatted about how Derrickson’s storytelling approach complimented the material, what he did to prepare for his role in Deliver Us from Evil and his experiences collaborating with the film’s star, Eric Bana.
When you’re taking on a role like this one that is both emotionally and physically taxing, how do you walk away from this experience unscathed?
Edgar Ramirez: You don’t. You never do. That’s just part of this job and that’s really what you want as an actor- you need to be changed somehow. After a confrontation with any character that you portray,...

Last week, we took a look at the career of Christopher Walken, a legendary figure to be sure. This week's subject is probably a less obvious candidate for this column, but hopefully after reading this article you'll feel he's just as deserving of inclusion as anyone else... Eric Bana Back in 2002, when Eric Bana was announced as the star of the much anticipated Marvel adaptation, The Hulk, most of us had the same reaction: Eric who? Unless you...

(Cbr) As a writer and director, Scott Derrickson has distinguished himself with versatility and ambition, even when working in the same genre. From "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" to "Sinister" to now "Deliver Us From Evil," there’s a sophistication and a uniqueness to these projects; in fact, the only element they really share is that they’re genuinely scary. Perhaps it’s that quality that brought Derrickson to the attention of Marvel, which has tapped him to direct "Doctor Strange." With his latest project in particular, Derrickson finds himself in the catbird seat as he is poised to take advantage of the success of last year’s "The Conjuring" with a film that promises to chill audiences while managing to communicate a clear, proficient voice behind the camera. Based on a true story, "Deliver Us From Evil" stars Eric Bana as Ralph Sarchie, a Bronx cop who’s pulled...

Director Scott Derrickson has been scaring the hell out of people for several years now, and he looks to continue the trend with his latest project, Deliver Us from Evil. Recently we sat down with him to talk about the film, and believe us when we tell you the devil is truly in the details.
Dread Central: We only got to see, well, basically, nothing more than the trailer. So, can you start by telling us a little about it?
Scott Derrickson: Yeah, the movie is about a guy, about Ralph Sarchie, who’s based on a real guy, a cop in New York City who Eric plays and the movie is about... his slow but steady confrontations with these supernatural occurrences that get him drawn into these cases, and that starts to affect his personal life and his family life and his belief system and all that.

We're kicking off our extensive Deliver Us From Evil interview series today with a lengthy chat with one of the industry's great producers, Jerry Bruckheimer. Read on to find out if it was the devil who made him do it!
Dread Central: Why did you want to do a movie on exorcism?
Jerry Bruckheimer: We like to put a voice to things that are true and Ralph Sarchie’s story was very intriguing. It was something that I didn’t understand or believe but apparently these things actually happened.
DC: We heard that some weird things happened on the set. Were you privy to anything?
Jb: No, but I’m sure [director] Scott [Derrickson] could tell you some of the weird things that happened. One thing that happened, it was the rainiest June in the recorded history of New York. So when you see the movie, and you’ll see it rains,...

The past few summers have been great times to get scared at the movies, what with offerings like "Sinister," "The Purge," and "The Conjuring" freaking people out in theater across the country. This trailer for "Deliver Us From Evil" looks like we won't be getting a respite from onscreen scares any time soon - and that's a good thing.
"Sinster" co-writer/director Scott Derrickson is at it again with this story about a cop and a priest and some good, old-fashioned exorcisms. New York City isn't an easy place to live in the best situation, but Officer Ralph Sarchie's beat is filling up with some seriously devilish activity. Played by former comedian Eric Bana, Sarchie is your average cop who puts his job ahead of everything else, and he's not one for any of this supernatural nonsense. That is, until he meets a priest named Mendoza who convinces him that...

It’s always exciting when talented actors and actresses can come together for a film that deals with modern day issues, but in a way that’s entirely believable and grounded. When movies attempt to “Hollywood-ize” issues like terrorism and crime, the result tends to be less acceptable and unjustly overblown – even if the entertainment factor is through the roof. A film like John Crowley’s Closed Circuit is absolutely not one of those indulgent and ridiculous attempts that loses sight of the actual issue it’s facing. Instead, it keeps the characters realistic and the content relatable.

Deadfall is an intense thriller from director Stefan Ruzowitzky. It stars Eric Bana as a vicious bank robber named Addison who is on the run with his sister Liza (Olivia Wilde) after their car crashes in the snow. They are forced to split up in order to avoid detection from the authorities and Addison is quick to eliminate those who are unfortunate enough to get in his way. Liza almost freezes to death until Jay (Charlie Hunnam), an ex-con with his own reasons to stay clear of the police, rescues her and soon after falls for her. But with all these characters desperate to avoid jail time, not everyone is going to get away clean.

Austrian filmmaker Stefan Ruzowitzky is best known for his movies Anatomy and Anatomy 2, and he won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for The Counterfeiters. His latest directorial effort is Deadfall, a crime drama which stars Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde as brother and sister who have robbed a casino and are now on the run. The movie has earned high marks for its beautiful cinematography, courtesy of Shane Hurlbut which captures the snowy landscapes of Canada like few others have before, and Bana delivers a terrifying performance as a man determined to make it across the border at any cost.
Throughout Deadfall’s 95 minute running time, Ruzowitzky maintains a high level of intensity right up to the movie’s violent conclusion. Recently, I got the opportunity to speak with him one on one when Magnolia Pictures held a press conference for the film at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.

With the announcement that Marvel was making an "Avengers" film, no character was as scrutinized by fans as much as the Hulk. Deadfall is bound to get comparisons to Fargo. With a few minor script tweaks and slightly different accents, this could have been passed off as a direct to DVD sequel. It is not that there are any similar characters or storylines but more so in the look and feel of the film. Had this been Fargo 2, I.d call it a worthy successor although I.m sure others will want my head on a platter (or my body in a woodchipper) for saying that. Prior to seeing the film, I heard some strongly negative feedback and was even told to avoid it completely by someone who attended an earlier press screening. Since then I.ve noticed a slew of negative reviews calling it an absolute mess and much worse. Honestly, I don.t know why everyone is ranking on this film so much because I loved the hell out of it.

That of course means my Tff experience officially starts tomorrow with the first of many early morning press screenings. Since most interview opportunities seem to be falling on days when I will not be at the fest, I.ve decided to play it by ear much like last year. Comedy duo Tim and Eric have garnered quite a cult following with their previous shows on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, “Tom Goes to the Mayor” and especially “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” Now the two are poised to dominate the world of film with their absurdly funny Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, which features appearances from Will Ferrell, John C. Fact is, many of next year's most anticipated films are currently shooting or are deep into post-production work and, as is usually the case these days, studios and the paparazzi have been delivering a steady stream of sneak peeks at the movies we can't wait to check out in 2012. Mark Ruffalo officially has made the jump for dependable supporting actor to A-list star.
After snagging a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars this year for "The Kids Are All Right," you'd think a whole new world of opportunity would be open for the New York-via-Wisconsin and Los Angeles native. Still, it took him more than a decade to finally realize "Sympathy For Delicious," his directorial debut about a paralyzed homeless man who discovers he has has faith healing powers, only to become a deejay for a local rock and roll band.
"Sympathy" was written by and stars Ruffalo's longtime friend Christopher Thornton, who was paralyzed from the waist down in real life more than 20 years ago. Ruffalo spoke with NextMovie about the film, his preparation for the Hulk in the upcoming "Avengers" movie and why getting an Oscar nomination means nothing when it comes to cinematic fund-raising.

"Hanna," starring Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, and Cate Blanchett. Directed by Joe Wright.
By Eric Isaac - April 18, 2011
In 1994 Luc Besson directed “The Professional,” a stark drama about a contract killer who befriends a preteen rebel. In that movie a young Natalie Portman wielded her gun for about fifteen seconds but the distorted image was a memorable one, and the ploy was used in other movies like “Kick Ass” and, most recently, in “Hanna,” directed by Joe Wright. Our gun-toting, gravity defying, ass-kicking heroine is a little older this time and played by Saoirse Ronan, a waiflike and lovely actress who has been making strides in Hollywood in independent and big-budget productions, alike.
Alas, “Hanna” is a room temperature-good action film which unevenly matches dramatic heft with suspense. Meet Marissa (played by Cate Blanchett), a government cadre chasing the product of an abandoned experiment (Hanna) with fury--Blanchett is dead-on in that role.

Actor Eric Bana feared hypothermia while filming new movie Hanna in freezing Finland.
The Aussie star admits he wasn't used to the big freeze he experienced when he arrived on set for the action thriller - and he only hoped medics would recognise the symptoms of hypothermia before they took hold on him and the rest of the cast.
He tells WENN, "The cold in Finland was something else, but we were well looked after. The funniest thing was we got a memo about how to diagnose hypothermia in your co-worker, because apparently it's easier to diagnose it in someone else rather than yourself.
"One of the things was erratic behavior. I thought, 'S**t, we're on a movie set, so everyone is gonna be behaving erratically!'"
But, despite the extreme cold which dropped to minus-29, director Joe Wright insists his leading man was a trooper throughout the shoot: "A more precious actor and we would have had a complete f**king nightmare on our hands. There were no large Winnebagos and catering was basically set up in an old wooden hut... but Eric was incredibly game."...

Hanna
Starring Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett and Eric Ban
Directed by Joe Wright
Rated PG-13
While it's been argued that there are no original ideas left in Hollywood, there are times when a filmmaker finds a way to combine genres and styles in a unique way that produces a film that feels like nothing you've ever seen before. Hanna is one of those rare films.
At its core, the film is a Bourne Identity-style revenge thriller centered around a young girl named Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) who has spent her entire life in seclusion in the arctic with her father, Erik Heller (Eric Bana). Erik has spent Hanna's life training her in combat, survival skills and foreign languages to prepare her for the moment when she must seek out and kill Marissa Weigler (Cate Blanchett). Erik once worked with Marissa and the CIA, but he felt compelled to leave the...

Eric Bana (Star Trek, Black Hawk Down) and Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones, Atonement) go mano-a-mano in the action-packed Hanna but it wasn't Eric holding back during his fight scenes with his sixteen-year-old on screen daughter.
Hanna Movie Trailer
Eric Bana plays an ex-cia man living in the wilds of Finland with his daughter Hanna, the perfect assassin he trained to kill a ruthless intelligent operative (Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett). In our sit down interview with Eric Bana, Eric tells CineMovie he was at concerned about the stunts with his young co-star but once he saw her fighting skills, he became more worried for his own safety. According to Eric, Saoirse apparently has a good boxer arm and could easily haven taken out her 6'3 hunky star. Saoirse joked she held back on Eric while he took it easy on her.

Saoirse Ronan first entered our consciousness as Briony Tallis, the precocious but misguided young teen whose little white lie set in motion devastating events in 2007's "Atonement." The role earned her an Oscar nomination and instantly put her star on the map – similar to Jennifer Lawrence and Hailee Steinfeld this past year.
The Ronan we meet in "Hanna" couldn't be any more different. Trained in the arctic wilderness by her father (Eric Bana) to be a merciless killing machine for (no spoiler alert) an uncertain future, her title character may go down as one of the fiercest female action heroes ever.
We grilled the 16-year-old Irish teen on kicking ass, missing out on "The Hunger Games" lead and (possibly) reuniting with "Lovely Bones" director Peter Jackson for a little movie called "The Hobbit."
What was the bigger draw for you on "Hanna" – getting to work Joe Wright again, or getting...

Full disclosure: a screening of Hanna was provided by Alliance Films. Their fan page is located (here).
Director: Joe Wright.
Writers: Seth Lochhead and David Farr.
Hanna is part espionage thriller and part adult fairytale, starring Eric Bana (Munich), Cate Blanchett (Robin Hood) and Saoirse Ronan (Lovely Bones). This title releases theatrically April 8th, through Focus Pictures and Alliance Films. Showing a little Wizard of Oz, Snow White, Hansel and Gretel and of course, the big bad wolf from Little Red Riding Hood, this feature shows Hanna's innocence lost, in a brutal world of espionage and counter-espionage. The final moral is one of consequence, in which Hanna learns that childhood and adulthood are two very different and competing spheres of interaction.
The film begins in Finland and here, Hanna (Ronan) learns the tricks of intelligence, while her mentor, Erik (Bana), has a secret motive for her training. Soon,...

I had the pleasure of seeing Joe Wright’s fourth feature tonight, the action/drama/thriller Hanna starring Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, and Eric Bana. While I’m embargoed from sharing any thoughts, Focus Features shared a new clip and a variety of images from the film. The clip features some of the fantastic The Chemical Brothers score, and a snippet from one of my favorite scenes in the film. Check them out below, followed by production notes from the film. Click for hi-resolution versions.
Synopsis
A teenage girl goes out into the world for the first time – and has to battle for her life. Director Joe Wright weaves elements of dark fairy tales into the adventure thriller Hanna, filmed on location in Europe and Morocco.
Hanna (played by Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan of Atonement, also directed by Joe Wright) is 16 years old. She is bright, inquisitive, and a devoted daughter.

Mark Ruffalo may be playing the Hulk in The Avengers, but he has some big green shoes to fill. Before the 42-year-old star of The Kids Are All Right portrayed the Marvel hero, Eric Bana and Edward Norton tackled the role first—Bana in Ang Lee's 2003 version and Norton in 2008's The Incredible Hulk. They each are strong actors, and may be easy on the eyes, but we really want to know who would win in a Hulk smashdown. So we asked Norton, and this is how he broke it down... "Eric's pretty big," Norton told E! News this week at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards. "I'm skinny and Mark's little...no, I'm kidding...Mark seems more like a lover than a fighter....

Encore visited the Geelong set of Simon Wincer’s new project The Cup which, although shot on a tight schedule, he hopes will be ‘the movie that stops a nation’ when it’s released in 2011.
The Cup tells the story of Damien Oliver (played by Stephen Curry), winner of the 2002 Melbourne Cup with the horse Media Puzzle and the support of Irish trainer Dermot Weld (Brendan Gleeson). Oliver’s brother (Daniel MacPherson) was killed one week before the event in a horse racing accident in Perth – which also reflects the way their father died 27 years ago.
Us journalist Eric O’Keefe heard of Oliver’s story and contacted Wincer, trying to get more information from his Australian friend to write a magazine article. Wincer looked into it and rang him back saying “This is a movie!”
Wincer is, of course, no stranger to horse-themed projects, from 1983’s Phar Lap to the 2008 CBS miniseries Comanche Moon.

One of the panels at the New York Comic-Con 2010 that not many people knew anything about, was Atonement and Pride and Prejudice director Joe Wright's latest film, Hanna. But after learning a little about it, your interest in the assassin drama may just be piqued. On hand for the panel was Wright and stars Saoirse Ronan and Eric Bana.
The movie tells the story of a 14-year-old girl named Hanna (Ronan) who is raised in the wilds of Northern Finland by her father, Eric (Bana), to be a deadly young assassin. As any young teenager would, she begins yearning to explore the world and meet different people -- she's only really known her father and what she's read in her books, which consists of an encyclopedia and Grimm's Fairy Tales, causing her to have something of a fantastical-yet-false sense of what the real world is really like. In order...

A war of words broke out in July between Edward Norton and Marvel production chief Kevin Feige after it became clear the actor wouldn't reprise his Hulk role in the superhero all-star flick "The Avengers."
Feige accused Norton of lacking sufficient "creativity and collaborative spirit," while Norton took the high road, saying he was simply "appreciative of the outpouring of support from fans of the Hulk and the Avengers."
Months later, while promoting "Stone" at the Toronto Film Festival, Norton went into greater detail about his dust-up with Marvel. Feige's accusations clearly still irk him, but the actor once again strove to avoid engaging in overly negative words.

Three films prompted impassioned tweets in the Twitter Report feed this morning — "Thor," "Inception" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" — but each for different reasons. A new image of Thor, Odin and Loki drew some eyeballs, but reactions were diverse. Ed Brubaker, meanwhile, wants you to go see "Inception," and Edgar Wright just seemed a little giddy witnessing a gigantic "Scott Pilgrim" poster getting ready to go up on a Hilton in advance of Comic-Con.
"Predators" drew some mixed reactions as well, which you can check out below. They're there, along with opinions on Mel Gibson's recent remarks and a call for Eric Bana to return as The Hulk.

Director Simon Wincer is about to start production of his new horseracing film The Cup, but he admits that the project has been particularly difficult to put together.
“I’m glad that we’re up and running, because it’s certainly tried my patience a number of times,” Wincer told Encore.
The Cup tells the story of Damien Oliver, winner of the 2002 Melbourne Cup with the horse Media Puzzle. Oliver’s brother was killed in a horse racing accident in Perth, one week before the event.
Wincer and Eric O’Keefe started working on this project in 2003, and it’s taken seven years to make it happen. The $17.5m film was financed in 2008, but fell apart due to the global financial crisis.
Win some, lose some. That’s what The Cup has experienced in its long journey.
Ray Winstone was attached to the project, to play Irish trainer Dermot Weld.

"The Lovely Bones" didn’t make much of a dent in the public consciousness when it was released earlier this year, but its star Saoirse Ronan is moving onward and upward regardless. Carlow girl Saoirse, who turns sweet 16 next month, has started filming her newest project, Hanna, with an all-star cast that includes Oscar winner Blanchett and Eric Bana. Saoirse has spent several weeks in Ireland undergoing rigorous training for the demanding role. According to distributor Focus Features, the title character, Hanna is a teenager who possesses “the strength, the stamina, and the smarts of a solider; these come from being raised by her father, an ex-cia man, in the wilds of Sweden. "Living a life unlike any other teenager, her upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin.
