Didier Lupfer, the former CEO of Studiocanal, has launched the Paris-based production banner The Media Company with a lineup comprising high-concept films and series, including “The Quest of Fire” and “Front Row.”
The outfit is also developing about 10 feature films, including Russian helmer Michael Idov’s “Aspiration,” which is co-produced with Artem Vassiliev at Métrafilms, and thriller “Override,” directed by Dmitry Glukhovsky (“Tekst”).
Lupfer said he was in advanced negotiations with a high-profile U.K. marketing agency to measure the projects’ potential for young adults and collaborate on developing content for specific niches. “The development phase of each project will be as long as it needs to ensure that we can deliver the right content and concepts,” said Lupfer.

Above: Lancelot du Lac (Robert Bresson, France, 1974).
One of France’s most beloved and recognizable poster designers, Raymond Savignac (1907-2002) created some 600 posters over a 50 year career, working almost exclusively in advertising. His simple, whimsical, colorful designs, reminiscent of children’s book illustrations, famously promoted Dunlop, Bic, Perrier, Air France, Cinzano and many other companies with an ineffable charm and wit. As far as I can tell, he designed only ten movie posters during his career, all of which I have gathered here. Five of them were created for the director Yves Robert (best known for The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe, the poster for which was designed by Savignac’s friend and peer Hervé Moran) and three for the later films of Robert Bresson. In fact one of Savignac’s final works was for a retrospective of Bresson in 2000.

A battle royale is brewing in War of the Buttons.
Based on Louis Pergaud’s best-selling 1912 novel, La Guerre des boutons, the French family adventure film War of the Buttons stars actor/filmmaker Guillaume Canet (Love Me If You Dare), Laetitia Casta (Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life), Kad Merad (Welcome to the Sticks) and newcomers Jean Texler and Ilona Bachelier.
Set in France during World War II, War of the Buttons tells the tale of two rival groups of kids from neighboring villages. Pre-teen rebel Lebrac (Texier) leads a spirited group of kids in a pint-sized “war” where the victory comes from capturing the enemies’ buttons, belts, and laces – forcing them to return home ragged to face their mothers’ reprimand. On my about me page, I mentioned several genres of movies that I dislike and avoid.
I neglected to mention the genre I will call .Holocaust for the Kiddies!.
I absolutely hated Life Is Beautiful and refused to see The Boy in the Striped Pajamas after being completely offended by its preview. The only, and I mean only, exception I would make is The Day The Clown Cried. Unlike the titles I just mentioned, this film is reportedly so offensive, its star Jerry Lewis is too ashamed to allow it to be seen. I will need to be convinced that there could be a movie more offensive than these…….

Chicago – World War II, also known as “The Good War,” had more than its share of darkness and sorrow. As the conflict winds down for a French town in the new film “War of the Buttons,” young love and rival town kid gangs create metaphors for the context of the war in its time and place.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
This is a sweet movie, more than a bit twee, but containing a sentiment that is life affirming, even up to its “The Sound of Music” type ending. The child and teen actors actually carry the film, which is the third remake of the novel “La Guerre des boutons” by anti-war French writer Louis Pergaud. This also contains metaphors for war and its futilities, as exemplified by the rival kid gangs in the French townships. It also throws in a youthful romance, between a tough kid leader and a Anne Frank-like Jewish girl hiding in the town.

Transplanted to 1944 Nazi-occupied France, Louis Pergaud’s 1912 Lord of the Flies-esque novel about a play war between the boys of two neighboring villages takes on metaphoric significance in this adaptation helmed by The Chorus’ Christophe Barratier. Classically styled with a sweeping score, dramatic crane shots and golden hues, War of the Buttons is adorable but sentimental, an earnest whitewash of a painful period during World War II....

Perhaps helped by a big endorsement from Oprah Winfrey, Ava DuVernay's Sundance Film Festival-award winning "Middle of Nowhere" topped all indie newcomers this weekend, grossing $78,030 for a $13,005 per-theater-average. That average bested the likes of "Smashed," "The Big Picture," "Simon and the Oaks" and "War of the Buttons," all of which also opened this weekend. News wasn't so good for another filmmaker with Oprah-associations, Lee Daniels, whose "The Paperboy" fell off sharpy in its second weekend. Full rundown below. Life During Wartime: Barratier Schmaltifies Nazi Occupied France
France has made a considerable move to reclaim her literature, as not one but two French productions of Louis Pergaud’s 1912 novel, War of the Buttons, have been released this year. This brings the total number of filmed adaptations of the celebrated novel to five, with two original French versions (in 1937 and 1962), and the better known 1994 UK version from John Roberts previously standing as the definitive English speaking film version. However, thus far, the Us will only be privy to one of the new additions, that directed by Christophe Barratier, the man whose directorial debut, 2004’s The Chorus was nominated for Best Foreign film in Americaland (the other, from Yann Samuell, whose 2003 debut, the much celebrated Love Me If You Dare top lines Guillaume Canet, used in Barratier’s ensemble here, but has yet to receive distribution in the Us market...

It's another big release week with no less than five major movies hitting theatres and quite a few smaller films as well. Ben Affleck's Argo will attempt to build on some solid buzz coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival, as will Martin McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths. Scott Derrickson's Sinister is poised to become the first big horror hit of the Halloween season, while Atlas Shrugged: Part II will complete the story that was started by its critically panned predecessor. But they'll all have to go through Here Comes the Boom, the Kevin James Mma comedy that could easily choke out the competition this weekend. In select theatres we also have Smashed starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul, the Oscar bait-y War of the Buttons, and Nobody Walks, co-written by Lena Dunham. What will you be watching this weekend? Argo Seven Psychopaths Sinister Here Comes the Boom...

It’s World War II, and France faces a hostile Nazi occupation. You wouldn’t know it from the children, however, as “War of the Buttons” uses the war as a macro-micro contrast with the tale of a group of youths protecting their territory from a group of would-be mini-hooligans. The troops may be coping with casualties on all sides, and regular French citizens deal with day-to-day bullying by Gestapo strongmen attempting to suss out Jewish citizens in hiding, but none seem aware of the War of the Buttons. It's a turf war where kids come at each other with sticks and fists, antagonizing each other as they attempt to seize each others’ land before retreating to secret hideaways and, more often, their home lives with overworked lower class parents. See, it’s metaphor! The Weinstein Company acquired this French hit to be released stateside, and with its mixture of kids,...

Some stories manage to live on to be told again another day, even if they live somewhat on the fringes. War of the Buttons is the fourth film based on the novel by Louis Pergaud, and this time we add some interesting pedigree, and 100% more Nazis over the last time we took a trip with the warring youths.
Directed by Christophe Barratier (of the brilliant Les Chorus), and starring Laetitia Casta and Guillaume Canet, the story that surrounds the “war” among children, and their penchant for trophy acquisition, has a much more serious focus if the trailer can be believed.
The film hits select theaters on July 18th, and this looks to be one that you want to try and catch if it makes its way to you.

"They would fight for each other... like never before." The Weinstein Company has unveiled an official Us trailer today for the French WWII drama War of the Buttons, kind of a family adventure about two rival gangs of kids in two French villages. The cast features a few names you may recognize, including Laetitia Casta, Guillaume Canet and Kad Merad, but is mostly made up of newcomers and young locals. That said, this looks quite fun, to be honest, some good French cinema. It almost reminds me of Son of Rambow, but the voiceover and music they chose hams it up and makes it play a little too uplifting. Watch anyway! Here's the official Us trailer for Christophe Barratier's War of the Buttons, in high def from Apple: Set in occupied WWII France, War of the Buttons tells the tale of pre-teen rebel Lebrac (newcomer Jean Texier) and the...

This is an actor who takes us back in time and reminds us of Richard Burton, Richard Harris and Peter O'Toole. He would have fit right in with these "bad boys." Jonathan was born in Dublin, Ireland on July 27, 1977. He was born with a heart condition and was baptized rather quickly as it was thought he might not live very long. His family moved to County Cork, Ireland when he was one year old. Jonathan's father John O'Keeffe was a musician. He separated from his wife Mary, leaving her to raise the four boys by herself. His mother, Mary Geraldine Meyers, raised Jonathan and his younger brothers Alan, James, and Paul, by herself. He was raised a Roman Catholic and was the oldest of the four brothers. All his brothers are musicians. Music is in the blood as Jonathan is a self taught guitarist and singer. He spent some time in an orphanage.

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

City of Lights, City of Angels (Col•Coa) was created in 1996 by The Franco-American Cultural Fund, a unique collaborative effort of the Directors Guild of America, the Motion Picture Association, the Writers Guild of America West, and France’s Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers of Music (Sacem). Col•Coa is also supported by l’Association des Auteurs-réalisateurs-Producteurs (Arp), the Film and TV Office of the French Embassy in Los Angeles and Unifrance.
Col•Coa is committed to promoting new French films in the U.S. and to showcasing the vitality and the diversity of French cinema in Hollywood: comedies and dramas, box office hits in France and specialty films, first features and films from established writer-directors, art house movies as well as mainstream films.
In 15 years, 231 new feature films and 140 new shorts have been selected. Col•Coa has constantly developed to become a showcase of at least 50 films, with a capacity of 20,000 in 2011 and an occupancy rate of 88%.
Its exclusive program has made of Col•Coa an anticipated date in the industry calendar and one of the largest French film festivals in the world. Scheduled a few weeks after the Academy Awards® and one month before the Cannes Film Festival, Col•Coa has become a prestigious event in Los Angeles.
Since 2004, the selection is exclusively composed of premieres. Several high-profile features are presented at Col•Coa for the first time in North America or in the U.S. Col•Coa is also known for presenting successful films a year before their commercial release in the U.S., raising the event’s profile among U.S. distributors who now use the event as a platform to launch and promote their film in Hollywood.
Col•Coa has substantial representation by leading industry professionals, including distributors, exhibitors, directors, writers, producers, Academy members, agents, press members or public filmgoers, as part and parcel to the festival is the cultural exchange involved, as well as the introduction of films that may not have been available to the industry. Col•Coa has developed partnerships with organizations like Ifta, The Cannes Film Market, Film Independent, Women in Film, The American Cinematheque, SAG, and since 2008, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Col•Coa “A Week Of French Film Premieres In Hollywood”
Col•Coa is more than a film industry event. Many screenings are reserved early due to the festival’s reputation and increased visibility. In 2008, an educational program was also launched to promote foreign films among young American audiences in association with E.L.M.A (European Languages & Movies in America). Close to 7,500 high school students and 70 high schools in Los Angeles County have participated in the program since 2008. In 2010, a master class was introduced for colleges, film schools and universities.
More than 100 French writers, directors and producers have presented their film(s) at Col•Coa. Among them are Costa-Gavras, Alain Corneau, Claire Denis, Michel Hazanavicius, Claude Lelouch, Claude Miller, Bertrand Tavernier, Olivier Assayas, Laurent Cantet, Arnaud Desplechin, Anne Fontaine, Bertrand Blier and Mathieu Kassovitz.
Whereas Col•Coa is not a celebrity-driven event, many artists attend as it is a showcase for their work, a chance to mingle with other artists in a professional, yet relaxed and cordial environment, the true basis of cultural exchange. Among past Col•Coa guests are actors and actresses Rosanna Arquette, Nathalie Baye, Bérénice Bejo, Marion Cotillard, Julie Delpy, Jimmy Jean Louis, Helen Mirren, Gena Rowlands, Sharon Stone, Charlize Theron and Lambert Wilson, as well as prominent American writers and directors: Wes Craven, Taylor Hackford, John Landis, Michael Mann and Alexander Payne.

Penelope Ann Miller, The Artist As mentioned in my previous post, French president Nicolas Sarkozy has named Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company (TWC), a recipient of the 2012 Légion d'Honneur, or Legion of Honor. The honor is "in recognition of Weinstein’s contributions to cinema and his decades of work producing some of the most highly regarded films of our time," according to a TWC press release. Weinstein will be inducted with the rank of Chevalier. Although Sarkozy himself nominated Weinstein back in late July 2011, the nomination was made public only today, five days after the Weinstein Company-distributed The Artist, a French production directed by Michel Hazanavicius, won five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor (Jean Dujardin). As per the TWC press release, Weinstein had requested that the honor be kept private until now "to avoid any conflict of interest" with his company's Academy Award campaign for The Artist.

Yeah, I know War of the Buttons (La guerre des boutons) is technically a family film, but any story that dives into the murky waters of kids left to their own delinquent behaviors is always of interest to me. An this French remake seems interesting.
Word is that when Yann Samuell's treatment for a new War of the Buttons was pitched at Cannes in May 2010, it generated an enormous amount of enthusiasm. Why exactly we're not sure, but producer Marc du Pontavice said this of the new film: "We were looking for a powerful idea within "War of the Buttons", an ideal that would draw an invisible link between the school of society and what Yann aptly calls a Society of Children. To make a film that talks about integration, independence and innocence - in that joyful spirit that comes with the delight of disobedience. In that respect, the...
