Sue Naegle and Ali Krug are in business with Universal Studio Group’s UCP.
The Emmy-winning pair has signed an overall deal with the Universal division through which their newly established Dinner Party Productions will develop and produce series.
This marks the first time former UTA, HBO Entertainment and Annapurna Pictures boss Naegle has worked directly with Universal. She exited her Chief Content Officer role at Annapurna in 2022. As we reported at the time, Krug had initially taken over her TV division responsibilities, but has since reunited with her former boss and long-time production partner to launch Dinner Party.
In development is a series adaptation of Elon Hilderbrand’s novel ‘The Five-Star Weekend’ for Universal’s sister streamer Peacock, with Bekah Brunstetter penning the script. The book follows a popular food blogger, who, after a tragedy, brings friends from distinct times in her life to spend a weekend in Nantucket.

After making their first narrative feature “Nyad,” which debuted last year and earned Oscar nominations for the film’s stars Annette Bening and Jodie Foster, Academy Award winning directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi (“Free Solo”) are returning to their documentary roots with “Photographer.”
The six-part National Geographic docuseries features seven photographers — Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen, Dan Winters, Campbell Addy, Krystle Wright, Muhammed Muheisen, and Anand Varma. Vérité footage of each subject’s current mission is interwoven with interviews and archival footage to demonstrate how each photographer approaches their work, the intention behind that work, their process, and how they each discover, see and experience the world.
To bring each of the National Geographic photographers’ stories to life, showrunners Chin and Vasarhelyi hired six veteran documentary filmmakers: Marshall Curry (“Racing Dreams”), Crystal Kayiza (“Rest Stop”), Sam Pollard (“MLK/FBI”), Kristi Jacobson (“Solitary”) Rita Baghdadi (“Sirens”) and Pagan Harleman...

Are you ready to be lured by Sirens?
Netflix has announced the new limited series from Maid showrunner and writer Molly Smith Metzler as the first project from Metzler’s creative partnership with the studio — and it sounds like we’ll get a good dose of rich people behaving badly.
The dark comedy will follow Devon, who’s concerned about her sister Simone’s creepy relationship with her new employer, the mysterious socialite Michaela Kell. Michaela’s cultish, ultra-luxurious lifestyle is like a drug to Simone, and Devon thinks it’s time for an intervention. When Devon tracks her sister down to find out Wtf is going on, she underestimates what you’re in for when you have Michaela as an enemy.
Told over the course of a drama-filled weekend at the Kells’ lavish beach estate, Sirens is an incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class.

Netflix has greenlit the next project from Maid creator and showrunner Molly Smith Metzler.
The streamer has ordered Sirens, a limited series that’s described as a dark comedy that explores “women, power and class.” The series comes from Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap banner (which also produced Maid), and the Barbie star and producer is an executive producer.
Sirens is based on Metzler’s play Elemeno Pea, which she wrote during her time as a student at Juilliard. It centers on two sisters, Devon and Simone, and Devon’s concern that Simone has an unhealthy relationship with her new boss, socialite Michaela Kell. According to the show’s logline, “Michaela’s cult-ish life of luxury is like a drug to Simone, and Devon has decided it’s time for an intervention. When Devon tracks her sister down to say Wtf, she has no idea what a formidable opponent Michaela will be.

Netflix has ordered the limited series “Sirens,” a female-driven dark comedy from “Maid” writer and showrunner Molly Smith Metzler and executive produced by LuckyChap.
The new series is the first under Metzler’s multi-year overall deal with Netflix, announced in February 2022 following the massive success of “Maid.” The series — starring Margaret Qualley and produced by LuckyChap, as well as John Wells Productions — debuted on the streamer in October 2021, where it spent 14 weeks on the streamer’s global Top 10 TV list and reached the Top 10 in 93 countries. “Maid” was also a critical hit, as Metzler — an award-winning writer and playwright whose credits also include “Shameless” and “Orange Is the New Black” — won a WGA award and the show earned multiple Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics Choice award nominations.

The 19 songs on Travis Scott’s comeback album Utopia weren’t enough content for him. Nearly a month after its release, the rapper has expanded the world of the album with four new music videos. The visual release, dropped all at once on YouTube, includes “Hyaena,” “Sirens,” “Modern Jam,” and “Delresto (Echoes),” which features vocal contributions from Beyoncé. Tacoma Fd is one of the funniest and wackiest workplace comedies. The truTV series follows a crew of firefighters in one of the rainiest cities in America. The Tacoma Fire Department crew doesn’t put out a lot of fires but it definitely has some of the funniest members out of any series. Throughout the list, there were no featured artists, but the album’s arrival revealed appearances from Beyoncé, Drake, The Weeknd, Sza, James Blake, and more across its stacked guest list.

Queer movies and TV shows are all well and good, but arguably even more important is the existence of great LGBTQ documentaries. Fiction can help provide great representation and tell moving queer stories, but documentary does something else entirely: it preserves entire communities’ stories as snapshots in humanity’s kaleidoscopic history.
Documentary filmmaking has (almost) always been a relative safe haven for LGBTQ cinema, particularly smaller, experimental docs created by independent filmmakers. For years, mainstream films largely sanitized and ignored the LGBTQ community — but the documentary format allowed queer people to capture the truths of their lives that went otherwise undepicted. Great LGBTQ documentaries stretch back as far as 1967, with “Portrait of Jason”: a fascinating profile of a gay nightclub performer. Other early greats provided the first mainstream depictions of vibrant gay subcultures, like 1991 ballroom doc “Paris Is Burning” or 1967’s drag film “The Queen.” And still others provided...

While unveiling its slate of new French originals and acquisitions on Monday, Prime Video announced that it would skip a French theatrical release for “Challengers,” Luca Guadagnino’s anticipated tennis drama. The film, which stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and “West Side Story” star Mike Faist, will still be released in theaters in all other territories.
During a posh press event hosted at the Pavillon Royal on the outskirts of Paris, Brigitte Ricou-Bellan, Prime Video’s country managing director for France, said the strategic move by the Amazon streamer resulted from France’s notoriously strict windowing rules, which demands streamers to wait 15 to 17 months after a theatrical roll out before making a new film available on their services. The rule has led other studios to opt to skip French cinemas for new releases before, such as Disney’s decision to debut “Strange World” on streaming.
“We’re a strong partner for French cinema and well-established talent.

In “The Siren” (2023), shown in the Berlinale's Panorama section, the director, Sepideh Farsi, shows the violence of 1980's Iran-Iraq war through the perspective of 14-year old Omid. Farsi repurposes the coming-of-age and adventure movie conventions, and juxtaposes them with the grim context of the conflict. The effect is as haunting, as it is surprisingly endearing.
Sirens is screening at Berlinale
This is the first animated film in Farsi's career which spanned from feature-length fiction to documentary works, predominantly focusing on contemporary Iran. With a story inspired by the director's families' experiences, screenplay penned by Javad Djavahery and animation overseen by Zaven Najjar, “The Siren” starts in the pre-lapsarian Abadan, a major Iranian city which will be soon pummelled by Sadam Husein's Iraqi forces. In the opening scene, boys play football. The game, however, is interrupted by a sudden missile strike. This triggers a rapid chain of events: Omid's older brother joins the army; whoever can,...

As we have said before, and as the reality of a number of countries no one knew much about outside of their borders for decades, comes to the fore, the stories witnessed in documentaries are revealed to be ones that go beyond any kind of imagination (script if you prefer). Asian cinema in particular seems to thrive on both, as a region where life was never as “normal” as in the West, with the category, as a whole, including some of the best films we have seen during the last few years, 11 of which we include here.
Without further ado, here are the best Asian documentaries of 2022, in random order, and, as always, with a focus on diversity in style, directors, and country of origin. Some films may have premiered in 2021, but since they mostly circulated in 2022, we decided to include them.

Following the critical success of “Billions,” Caroline Polachek is back with the official release of her new track, “Sunset.” Paired with a video peppered with scenes of a rocky beach town in Barcelona, the Sega Bodega-produced song weaves Polachek’s signature otherworldly vocals with Balearic beats, hand claps, and nimble guitar strings.
The song is a quick burn and tells the story of bold, fearless love. Co-directed by Matt Copson and Polachek, the collage-style video follows the singer as she drives through town, plays with kittens in the streets, and sketches from a sun-soaked rooftop.

The Tamil-language historical epic being billed as India’s Game of Thrones is based on a Tamil history book series that’s read in schools, full of succession battles, blood and betrayal. It’s not a fictional Westeros, but the actual Chola empire that ruled much of southern India from the 9th to the 13th century.
The strong numbers come with film doing great in Tamil, but less so in other Indian language dubs. Part 2, currently in post, has a release planned by mid-2023.
According to Imax, the Lyca Productions’ film directed by Mani Ratnam reps its third highest domestic opening for an Indian title with 945K from 53 domestic big screens, or 23 of the film’s nationwide total. That...

Lebanon is a country with a complicated political situation and a deep history and culture. However, it’s not a country known for its heavy metal music. Let alone heavy metal music made by women. Maybe the upcoming documentary, “Sirens,” will help change that perception.
“Sirens” follows an all-female metal band as they wrestle with friendship, sexuality, and destruction in their pursuit of becoming thrash metal stars. They’ll also have to deal with the weight of being the first and only female group to come out of Lebanon.

Get ready to cheer on the Westbrook Sirens, because the Big Shot Season 2 trailer is here. And it looks like our favorite coach, John Stamos‘ Maryvn Korn, has a lot more than just winning games to contend with as the Westbrook School for Girls officially goes co-ed. In Big Shot Season 2 on Disney+, “Korn returns to Westbrook with a new fire, ready to show that his basketball team belongs in D-2 and that he’s still the championship-winning, powerhouse coach he was in the NCAA,” the synopsis teases. “Marvyn’s latest plan toward relevance is to get his team broadcast on ESPN and his method is to recruit an unlikely player: Ava, a gutsy beach volleyball phenom whose public tantrum got her ousted from her own sport. Between losing their assistant coach Holly Barrett to a rival school, new friction amongst teammates, a sudden and unexpected proximity to boys, and...

"Instability. War. Unemployment. I believe everyone is a slave in this life. But I don't want to live in fear." Oscilloscope Labs has revealed an official US trailer for Sirens, an acclaimed documentary from the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Opening in select US theaters (starting in NY & LA) this September for anyone to catch up with. Sirens is a documentary about a metal band from Lebanon and how the rockers deal with changes in their lives. Lilas and Shery, co-founders and guitarists of the Middle East's first all-female metal band called "Slave to Sirens", wrestle with friendship, sexuality and destruction in their own pursuit of becoming thrash metal rock stars. They're based in Beirut, where there are still rules and laws they must carefully navigate, but they do their best to rock out anyway. Despite their obvious challenges, the members of Slave to Sirens persist in trying to...

Ready to rock?
The Sundance selected documentary “Sirens,” directed by Rita Baghdadi, tells the story of Lebanon’s first all-female metal band, Slave to Sirens. The film is executive-produced by Natasha Lyonne and Maya Rudolph and centers on the band’s friendships, relationships, and at times, self-destruction, in the pursuit of rock stardom. “Sirens” won the Grand Jury Prize at Outfest and is set to premiere in theaters September 30 from Oscilloscope Laboratories.
Per the official synopsis, on the outskirts of Beirut, Lilas and her thrash metal bandmates, Shery, Maya, Alma, and Tatyana (Slave to Sirens), have big dreams but few opportunities. When the band’s appearance at a U.K. music festival isn’t the life-changer they had hoped for, Lilas comes home to Lebanon on the brink of collapse. At the same time, the complicated relationship between Lilas and her fellow guitarist Shery starts to fracture. The future of her band,...
