Colombia’s International Feature Oscar submission El ovido que seremos (English title: Memories of My Father) hails from Oscar-winning Spanish director Fernando Trueba and stars Spanish legend Javier Cámara. It’s based on the memoir by Héctor Abad Faciolince about his father who was a doctor, professor and an activist for social justice who was murdered in 1987 by Colombian paramilitaries.
A love letter from son to father, the book was “so dear” to Trueba’s heart that he had given it to friends and family many times over the years. “It’s a book you don’t give to just anyone, you give it to people you really care for,” he says during Deadline’s Contenders International award-season event, where he also talked about making the decision to turn the subject matter into a film.

While July 28th may be a light day in terms of the amount of horror and sci-fi titles making their home entertainment debuts, we do have an interesting assortment of films and TV to look forward to. Kino Lorber has dug up two classics—The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein and Cherry 2000 (starring Melanie Griffith)—which are being released on Blu-ray this Tuesday, and Scream Factory has another underrated genre gem getting the HD treatment as well—the horror western Ghost Town.
For all you MST3K fans out there, Shout! Factory is putting out another collection of campy films that you’ll be able to add to your collections this week and Bayview Entertainment also has a double feature of cult movies from Germany—Strangler of the Tower / Monster of London—arriving on DVD.

The deserted town the Brady family got trapped in on their way to the Grand Canyon is charming compared to the one in 1988's Ghost Town. On July 28th, Scream Factory will release Ghost Town on Blu-ray, and we've been provided with three copies to give away.
Ghost Town synopsis: "A dusty ghost town, seemingly abandoned, holds the lives of its original inhabitants in an animated netherworld for 100 years…
When a modern-day sheriff's deputy is lured to a desolate, spooky ghost town in search of a missing woman, he comes face-to-face with a malevolent spirit from the town's past. The spell of death and suffering over the undead townspeople must end to set them free from eternal pain. The horrors of a possessed outlaw, in a time-suspended dimension are only the setting for a frightening battle for the mind, nerves and flesh.
Starring Franc Luz (The Nest, When Harry Met Sally), Jimmie F. Skaggs (Oblivion,...

This summer, Scream Factory will take viewers to a ghost town that's a lot more sinister than the one the Brady family was trapped in on The Brady Bunch. Slated for a July 28th release, the western horror film Ghost Town hits Blu-ray on July 28th:
Press Release -- "The good. The bad. The Satanic. Scream Factory proudly presents the Empire Pictures classic Ghost Town on July 28, 2015 in its Blu-ray debut.

It’s the voice. That mellifluous, basso profundo, deep down rumbling that issues words, sentences, entire speeches with such authority, sincerity and such relish that we cannot but pay attention. We hang on every word because we hear the intelligence, the humor, the irony and most of all the joy of someone who is in love; with life, with his partner, with acting, with being in the world and a part of human society, with the absolute joy of living. That voice is as recognizable and distinctive as Orson Welles, John Huston, Ed Begley or Roger Corman, that voice takes us by the hand and reveals to us a life lived full out, in every sense of the word; complicated, tragic, loving, generous and most of all fun.

Looking at actor Meg Foster’s resume brought on a feeling of disbelief for me. I know her as a sci-fi and horror genre icon. Most people in my circle know her from such films as They Live, Masters of the Universe, Stepfather II, and Oblivion as well as TV shows like Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Sliders.
Her roster of work stretches way further than that, beginning in 1969. She’s starred in legendary shows and movies like Bonanza, Hawaii Five-o, Cagney & Lacey, Murder, She Wrote, and several others.
Ms. Foster adds another notch in her horror belt with Rob Zombie’s new film The Lords of Salem. She portrays Margaret Morgan, the head of a coven of witches who are burned at the stake because of their heresy. She curses the women of the town of Salem, Massachusetts and swears to...

It seemed to be some sort of rule of thumb with the more iconic of horror baddies – the bigger you are then the harder and much more spectacularly you fall, usually amidst a climatic showcase of visual effects that have stretched the already limited budget of the film to near breaking point. I guess that's part of their enduring appeal. I mean, would Dracula really have been as unforgettable as he is if he was easily snuffed out by a simple baseball bat to the dome? Could you imagine watching a version of King Kong where the ape was simply put down like Old Yeller instead of being shot down from the top of the Empire State building? Some of these deaths have become as iconic as the villain themselves, complimenting the closing of the film with some final reel fireworks. Even a nameless henchman has a fighting chance for...

Westwood - The master of sensual European cinema golden years have a tint of blue. UCLA just hosted retrospective of Radley Metzger’s films. His most important films are being released on Blu-ray. He’s about to take the director’s chair as he approaches 83.
His masterwork Camille 2000 was just released Blu-ray with an extended version from Cult Epics. The 1969 update of Dumas’ The Lady of the Camellias takes place in an esoteric Italy. The restored high definition transfer gives a detailed look at that magical time. The Party Favors had a chance to chat with Radley Metzger about the release.

Imagine, if you will, a cheap, second-rate sound stage dressed to resemble a typical Old West-style township, complete with poorly constructed storefronts and several idiosyncratic ceiling fans mounted from a selection of elevated planes at various intervals up and down this impossibly familiar setting. However, instead of cowboys and Indians and hookers and gunslingers and a drunken George Takei roaming the streets, you have cowboys and Indians and hookers and empaths and aliens and a drunken George Takei spouting incredibly awful “Star Trek”-related puns to the stunning sound of suffocating silence. Is this skewed sci-fi scenario a delicious fever dream perpetrated by office-born illnesses, you ask? Not quite. In fact, all of this giggly nonsense can be found lurking within the folds of director Sam Irvin’s 1994 impossibly wonky Full Moon effort “Oblivion”, a story so monumentally epic that it became necessary to split the tale into two complete feature-length productions.

With Cowboys & Aliens due out soon, Terence looks at the history of the sci-fi western, and picks out a few of the best and worst…
Please note: there a few spoilers in this article, but not major ones.
The upcoming Cowboys & Aliens from Iron Man director, Jon Favreau, and starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, may seem like another one of those Hollywood blockbuster ‘high concept' movies (even if it is based on a successful graphic novel). However, the hybrid genre of the sci-fi western is nothing new. In the history of cinema, the six gun and the ray gun have shared the silver screen surprisingly often.
The sci-fi western, like any other film genre, has seen its share of the good, the bad and the ugly. While it's too early to tell whether Cowboys & Aliens will be keeping company with Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef or Eli Wallach, it's...

Fans of Full Moon might be happy to hear that Sam Irvin's 1994 cowboys and aliens yarn Oblivion is getting the royal treatment from Shout! Factory in July. A wise move considering a certain other film involving Cowboys and Aliens is coming out around that time. Maybe you've heard of it?
Synopsis:
Zack Stone must return to Oblivion after his father is killed by the evil Red Eye. Zack is a pacifist but Oblivion needs a new sheriff to foil Red Eye and his gang of hellions.
No news on the bonuses yet, but since it's not part of a two pack and considering the great work they've been doing on their Roger Corman stuff of late i imagine it'll come with some nice extras for fans.
You can pre-order Oblivion here.
Check out the trailer after the break.
Also from Full Moon: Trancers: The Cult Classic Trilogy

Finally, we have the solution to all the problems currently bedeviling Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark… we’ll get George Takei to play the lead part.
Click here to view the embedded video.
He certainly has a fan following from his time in Star Trek, Heroes, and the original cowboys and aliens film, Oblivion.
However, while I think Broadway is finally willing to accept a gay lead actor, should we really be adding to the stereotype that gay men are swingers?...

Back in 1994 there was a very real movie called 'Oblivion', starring Richard Joseph Paul, Jackie Swanson and Andrew Divoff, among many other people you've probably never heard of (except for maybe Isaac Hayes and George Takei, who ad-libbed a number of 'Star Trek' jokes found in the movie ). In the film, Paul played Zack Stone, a cowboy who returns to the seedy town of Oblivion after his father is killed by the villainous Red Eye. Can Zack step up and become the town's new sheriff in order to rid it of Red Eye and his evil gang of aliens?
Produced with a budget of around 2.5 million, 'Oblivion' came with the tagline: "On this planet, it's Cowboys and Aliens", which is comical, of course, because in 2011 we actually have a film coming out called 'Cowboys & Aliens'. Based on the...

Sci-fi and the western have long been some of the most popular and successful genres in American movie history, so combining the two would seem like a great idea to any film studio. So after the release of his studio’s, Full Moon Entertainment, hit 1989 film ‘Puppet Master’ and its 1991 follow-up ‘Puppet Master 2,’ B-movie veteran actor Charles Band hoped to create another successful franchise, the sci-fi-western mix ‘Oblivion.’ But with its absurd plot, lackluster acting and terrible special effects, Band is most likely happy that many people have forgotten one of his studio’s earliest entries. The ill-conceived storyline for the movie, which was written by Peter David, follows renegade [...]...
