We have some sad news to share today, as The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that writer/director Manny Coto – who is best known for directing the 1992 horror comedy slasher Dr. Giggles (watch it Here) – has passed away at the age of 62, following a thirteen month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Manuel Hector Coto was born in Havana, Cuba on June 10, 1961, then his family emigrated to the U.S. just a few months later. Coto and his siblings were raised in Orlando, Florida, and he was still a child when a fascination with Star Trek inspired him to start shooting short films with his father’s 8mm camera. After attending college in New Orleans, he moved out to Los Angeles in 1983 and started working in commercials. He eventually crossed paths with Tippi Hedren, who worked with Alfred Hitchcock on The Birds and Marnie, and was able to get her to agree to...

Adam Scott never wanted to be anything other than an actor. He has been devoted to his craft ever since his days of appearing in plays in high school. His first notable professional gig was playing a strung-out deliverer of exposition in the not-at-all-remembered 1994 MTV series "Dead at 21," one of the most 1990s things ever. A few years later, Scott appeared in the final theatrically released "Hellraiser" movie, "Hellraiser: Bloodline" in which he played a sweaty, immortal French aristocrat. That same year, he played the unnamed helmsman of the U.S.S. Defiant in "Star Trek: First Contact." Incidentally, his "Star Trek" character has recently shown up in the video game "Star Trek: Timelines" where he was named Helsman Wyatt, presumably after Ben Wyatt, Scott's character on "Parks and Recreation."

One year after “Ted Lasso” netted them seven Primetime Emmys, the Apple TV+ team are now not only looking to repeat their success in the comedy categories but also to make a splash on the drama side. The latter prospect mainly hinges on “Severance,” the first season of which has earned 14 nominations across 12 categories, including one for Best Drama Series and another for series lead Adam Scott. This acting notice is Scott’s first and comes nearly three decades into his career, which now includes regular roles on seven different series.

It has been a long and pothole-ridden road to “Scream,” which premiered on MTV tonight (June 30). While the one-time music video channel has produced reality shows that have been both genre-defining and ratings-winning (including but not limited too “The Real World” and “Jersey Shore”), its history with scripted dramas makes the Philadelphia Phillies current win-loss record look impressive. MTV has been trying to break the scripted drama code for more than 20 years, with very little to show for it. Personal crises, sexual mischief, groundbreaking depictions of same-sex relationships and other elements that have worked for reality TV have rarely struck gold with the network’s audiences when an actual script supervisor involved. “Awkward” and “Teen Wolf” -- a pair of shows that premiered in 2011 -- are still on the air, and have garnered mostly positive reviews to go with small but devoted followings. (“Awkward” will begin airing its fifth and...

Today is MTV’s 30th birthday, and the good folks at EW.com have asked me to say a few words. Turn up your computer speakers and listen to our story, won’t you?
As you’re aware, MTV premiered 30 years ago today. As you’re aware if you’re old, MTV took a while to go nationwide. The prevailing wisdom, as I recall it, was that such a thing could never catch on. The idea of a 24-hour music-video channel was tantalizing for the youth of the early ‘80s, and the wait for the cable systems in St. Louis to carry it was excruciating.
