Magical

"The Little Mermaid" is a magical tale. A healthy story to the child's spirit. Many have seen it but the new generation must see it. It's a magical story that fills the children's soul with fantasy and creativity. I think all children should see it at a young age. This Disney classic will win the heart your son/daughter/niece/nephew etc. I really encourage families to see it. Think of it as chicken soup for the children's soul. If you've ever heard of those books. It's a classic that you will never forget. A Magical tale that will light up you Shields face(s) I hope that this movie will make you children happy and joyful to the bone. Enjoy.

Quite good TV series

To be honest I don't know if many people would watch this cartoon almost 30 years after the release, but in case you do (like me) I don't think you will regret it. It's a prequel to one of the best animated movies Disney has ever made and it's not too long, only 31 episodes.

This series never pretended to go down in history as they were a mere spin-off of the original movie but that doesn't mean it's bad. Some chapters are bad but most of them are very fun and entertaining, children will for sure enjoy it more. There are some new characters apart from the ones we know from the movie which is good and offers variety, and also some good songs. The wonderful voice of Jodi Benson is one of the best features about The Little Mermaid TV series.

Animation isn't as good as Disney movies but it's understandable as most of the budget of the company was focused on the big screen movies yet it's decent, the colors are a bit more bland but still pretty good.

I would recommend it to parents with children who like Disney or fans of The Little Mermaid movie who want to see more of Ariel and all their friends. It's much better than the sequel!

The Adventures of Ariel
Terryfan29 November 2015
The Little Mermaid is a 1989 classic from Disney which still is consider one of their best motion pictures

So it's interesting to know they would produce a TV series but what they did was smart of them is to make the series a prequel before the events of the movie it worked very good.

Plus Jodi Benson reprise her role as Ariel, Kenneth Mars reprise his role as Triton and Samuel E.Wright reprise his role as Sebastian. Which is very good on their part to give the show a good chance.

Despite the budget the series did have some good visuals and animation, I don't like judging animation because of their budget because there is some good animation here just got to be open mind about it

Also we get original songs written for the show not in every episode but the ones who did get songs they each have their special to them

The voice acting is pretty good as well with entertaining humor, intense, sadness and joy. The writing helps make the voice acting work so this is a good kid show and for fans of the Little Mermaid

If you can find the show give it a try

Brings Back Childhood Memories...
Ginger8729 August 2004
I used to love watching "The Little Mermaid" T.V. series when I was little. I was 5 years old when this series premiered and I remember waking up early every Saturday morning with my sister just to watch it. I was so excited to see the new episodes. My favorite character was Flounder, he was so cute. My sister's favorite character was Sebastian, he was so funny. I occasionally still watch this show whenever I get a chance to on Toon Disney.

I loved the theme song of "The Little Mermaid" T.V. series because it was a mixture of many of the songs from the movie "The Little Mermaid", which I also love. My favorite episode was "Wish upon a Starfish".

All together I think this was a good prequel to the movie and I suggest everyone should watch it. I give this series 9/10 stars.

Fun for kids!!!!!
sethn1723 September 2006
Disney's outstanding reputation of producing the best in children's entertainment continued into 1992 with "The Little Mermaid," and this show is based on the 1989 theatrical animated film. Unlike other shows like "TaleSpin," which would borrow a few characters from the Disney films, this was the first to use all of the characters from the film; something that would become a new practice for the "good old Disney cartoon shows."

This was a cute show; it was friendly, especially for the little ones!!!!! This not only played on local television but this ended up on the Old Disney Channel in the mid to late 90s along with the other little children's shows.

"The Little Mermaid" was not just a great series; it opened up the door to a new way of making Disney shows!!!!!

10 stars

Very Good

This show like Aladdin is an excellent show made after the fantastic original. It isn't as good as the film, which is an animated classic, but this is a childhood favourite of mine, that I am still very fond of. When I was little, I wanted to be like Ariel, and I loved everything about the show and the film, the animation, the songs and the characters. Standout episodes are "Whale of a Tale", "Wish Upon a Starfish" and "The Evil Manta"(or in Harmony). The songs in the show are amazing, with catchy lyrics. Can I also say that the theme tune is based on the songs in the original? Ariel is a beautiful, headstrong character, and Jodi Benson voiced her beautifully. I also loved the fact that Ariel is a little more resourceful and sympathetic in this series. Sebastian and Flounder provide excellent comic relief especially Sebastian who made me collapse in giggles more than once sometimes even in the same episode, and King Triton is an inspired father- figure. And where would we be without the villains? Lets see, Ursula (who scared the life out of me), Lobster Mobster(he is funny), and of course my favourite-Tim Curry's The Evil Manta, who like Ursula frightened me when I was little. Excellent show, with good education. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Watch the movie!!!!

Sorry, but am I the only one that really really hates this show? It's trash I did not like the voices and I think the girl's voice was the worst voice I'd ever find and this is the worst series I would ever search for. I really think the movie was much better, it was very delightful and amazingly magical but this one was the worst rip off of a movie. I would find something better than this disgusting demon spirited slob negative 999 and a million more I'll buy, once I see another one of this, I'ma get up and watch good movies like Cloudy with a chance of meatballs yuck! Newbies, please don't bother because Ariel's friends' magical spirits and her all of the characters are altered and changed because this is way too emo for me, look for something better.

to the person who said this show sucked
malgrd13 June 2015
I hope you realize they used the exact same voices for Ariel, Sebastian, and the king as they did in the movie. Obviously voice actors can't always do the TV series but for you to say the voice wasn't even right when it WAS JODI BENSON... I just can't. If you didn't like it then why did you even watch it?

I loved this show. I wasn't around for it when they showed it the first time but I for sure remember the reruns! I love spin off shows and i thought this was amazing! Brings me back to watching cartoons with my grandma. I wish Disney would come back with shows like these. They'd probably have more viewers if they did.

Successful spin-off in my eyes
willydefalco23 December 2000
Being a fan of the Disney movie it was natural for me to see how Disney would do on translating it to a weekly TV series. And I was pretty happy with the results. Throughout it's three season life it managed to bring out more of the characters that I loved from the movie, while bringing new characters to enjoy.

In the series Ariel was maybe three or four years younger than in the movie and still headstrong about seeing the world above her. Flounder is still a yellow guppie scared of everything and best pals with Ariel. Sebastion is still the babysitter of Ariel but less stricter. (I don't recall him ever ratting out Ariel throughout the course) The rest of the cast are still pretty much the same too.

Of the new characters the best recurring ones have to be the Lobster Mobster and his sidekick the Shrimp. Two spoofs on Al Capone and one of his goons. They always showed up trying to take over things but in the end ended up doing more damage to themselves than to other. There was also Urchin, an orphan who through the Lobster Mobster eventually became another friend with Ariel, even hinting as a love interest in the future.

The show even threw in references to the movie, with an occasional visit from Ursula and even Erik the prince, who commented on one day meeting that mermaid he saw in that certain episode.

The show ended with an episode dedicated to Hans Christian Anderson, telling it through an animated Hans reading his classic story to a group of children, the story involving Ariel and Flounder and the entire gang. The last image was perhaps the best of the show, a painted image of Ariel lying on a rock by the sea, smiling, looking out at the distance.

I'm glad that Disney still shows this cartoon on their channel even after many years, and I still look forward to seeing each episode. I only hope that the new sequel will provide Disney with the motivation to continue once again with the series.

I love this show I remember being like 4 and my parents buying me the tapes I was little mermaid obsessed I think my favorite episode was with the creepy cave monster ha ha really all of the old school Disney cartoons with characters from the movies/well known characters were pretty amazing its too bad that the only way to see them is to go get a boxed set or stay up until 2am. The Disney channel lineup does nothing but repeat they should pull some of this stuff out for the regular line up no one needs to see the same episode of Phil of the future 3 times a day. Its too bad they don't make anything really good anymore the Disney golden age is definitely over both in movies and TV nowadays its constant reruns and Pixar...quality animation please.

Prehaps one of the best kids TV series ever?
R-S-W19 April 2004
I watched this program quite a bit a few weeks back until they started playing repeats. I haven't seen them all but they are all very good. All I'm missing is the third season and the first episode which they unfortunately don't play down here yet. It seems just like shorter versions of the movie with different stories. It's very well done with most of the episodes with very original plots. There are some great new characters which is a pity that they weren't included in the movie. The series like the movie also features songs (although they aren't in every episode) which are very good and seem as if they are written by the same people. All the cast from the movie has returned to do the series except for Flounder but you would have never noticed if you hadn't read this. In the series you find out a lot of question that was never answered in the movie like things about Ariel's mother, there are other kingdoms besides Atlantica & other creatures that live down there. The animation, backgrounds and voice acting is just as amazing as in the movie. The series is also very educational like another review said. I'm sixteen and going on seventeen in a few more days and I've learnt a few things from this series. That something I hadn't expected. The series also guest stars Tim Curry who is best known for The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It also has Nancy Cartwright who is best known as Bart in The Simpsons and Danny Cooksey who played the part of John's friend, Tim in Terminator 2. The series is quite additive too. After seeing a few episodes, I started watching the 3:30AM airing of it too. Well if you could rate this I would give this series a 10/10 and not many cartoons deserve that rating these days. I recommend anyone who saw the movie to watch this series too. It's a pity that there weren't many episodes thought. I think that this series is better then the Aladdin series but just by a small bit.

Colourful animation and cute characters make this a good kids' show.
Animany9412 October 2017
As a whole this is the TV-series spin-off of a Disney animated classic which is most true to the source material. Most of the original voices return and the replacements for the voice of Flounder didn't ruin anything like Dan Castellaneta did to the Genie in the Aladdin Spin- off series.

The events of the series are doing a good job serving as earlier adventures of Ariel taking place before the events of the original movie. Jodi Benson and Samuel E. Wright both do great jobs reprising their roles. Kenneth Mars' reprisal of his role is overall much like in the movie as a mean father who frequently learns about forgiving Ariel's often disobedient attitude and radical decisions.

The new characters in the series are generally well made. My favorite is Spot, a killer whale who has got away from his family and spends time with Ariel. He is cute, enough said. The Lobster Mobster and his sidekick Shrimp are two bad guys I found a little annoying at times, but were funny once in a while. Evil Manta is voiced by Tim Curry, enough said, he is a perfect choice for a bad guy.

While I welcomed the musical aspect of the series, I must say that aside from the great mix of the famous songs from the original movie into a title sequence the frequent small songs suffer from the lower budget. Some of them do grab your feelings towards the scene in which it is playing, but is definitely not a new "Under the Sea" or "Kiss the Girl".

Overall a well made TV-series which is made for kids, but lives up to their expectations if they are fans of the original.

I like it, very cute. Great for any little girl who likes the little mermaid.

Warning: Spoilers
I like that this series has the same voice for Ariel as is does in the movie! They just don't make cartoons like this anymore. Good animation and voices. I recommend it to any Disney fan! I don't see why anyone would have such a problem with this series. I hope they release it on DVD. I would love to add it to my collection. One critique would be that she is still a mermaid and in the preceding movie she becomes human....but.... Its not that hard to get over it. They also have The little mermaid treasure chest books that are closely related to this series. I hope this review helps those of you who are looking for a quality review and not just trash talk without facts.

Educational!
Lho332337031 July 2001
No Wonder this show is on Playhouse Disney it is educational. Ariel and her sister Arista never seem to get along. Triton must combat the bad guys with his magic trident to save his daughter. Sebastin is still the babysitter of Airel. Flounder is a coward. Ursula still has her two pet eels Flotsam and Jetsam. My grandmother and I used to watch videos of this series when I was 3 years old my sister used to watch this with me too. Sebastin is hilarious.
