In a minimum-security correctional facility in Los Angeles, inmate Jimmy Dworski is a car thief whose release is two days away. He is a fan of the Chicago Cubs and wins two tickets to the final against the California Angels from a radio quiz. However, the Warden does not allow him to leave the facility a few hours earlier to watch the game. Jimmy plots a plan with his fellow inmates simulating that he has been abducted by them in a riot while he flees from the facility to watch the game. Meanwhile, in Chicago, executive Spencer Barnes is forced by his boss Walter Bentley, who will be undergoing bypass surgery, to work for the weekend in Los Angeles. He gives instructions to Spencer to stay in his mansion and meet Sakamoto, the powerful president of a Japanese food company, with the purpose of winning his account. However, in the airport, Spencer loses his Filofax and Jimmy finds it, assumes his identity, and follows his instincts and honesty in the meetings with Sakamoto.
