Oi there, listen up! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for June 2024 includes another season of its biggest, bloodiest hit.
The Boys season 4 premieres its first three episodes on Thursday, June 13. Based on the trailers, The Boys is really leaning into the political side of its social satire with a presidential election underway and Homelander on trial for the small matter of killing a guy last season. The season will continue to air on Thursdays, culminating with the finale on July 18.
Amazon is really leaning into its sports offerings this month as well. Fans will get to watch the New York Yankees, the WNBA, and the Nwsl several times throughout June. That’s in addition to a couple of sports docs: Power of the Dream on June 18 and Federer: Twelve Final Days on June 20.
But if you’re looking for something even more explosive than Homelander and Roger Federer,...

A New Orleans native who was raised in Tennessee, Reese Witherspoon is the very definition of good things coming in petite 5-foot-1 packages. She made her film debut at age 14 in 1991’s “The Man in the Moon,” a bittersweet Southern coming-of-age tale of first love and loss. From then on, she was pegged as a young actress to watch. She would soon gravitate towards edgier fare such as the underwhelming 1994 comedy “S.F.W.” and 1996’s “Freeway,” a rancid take on a Little Red Riding Hood on the run. American animation is in an odd place. For creators, directors, and animators, the overriding cultural stigma against animation — that it's just for kids — probably provides a great deal of frustration. That's a joke even the Oscars make. It's a perception that limits the medium and reduces any potentially heady thematic material to something bland and easily digestible. Any material directed towards adults shifts into a mélange of innuendo and pop culture references, and children are condescended to in much the same way.
But even the movies that seem tailor-made for children's sensibilities get lost in the shuffle sometimes. 2012's "Rise of the Guardians," for instance, had a slam-dunk premise and an epic scale. It was a movie that took the fears of children seriously while also providing wildly entertaining set pieces, with beautiful animation and a star-studded cast. And yet, according to The Numbers, it didn't even make its production budget back domestically.

Music has always played an important role in Tolkien adaptations. J.A. Bayona, producer and director on Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, told Den of Geek last year that he played music on set for the actors to help them get “the right tone” for their characters, and that “there’s an… obvious sense of musicality when you read the books” which is “all about language and the beauty of language.” The show’s season one finale even featured a new musical setting for Tolkien’s “Rhyme of the Rings,” written by Bear McCreary and performed by Fiona Apple, which was generally well-received by fans.

Reese Witherspoon’s acting career began in 1991 when she auditioned for a small part but was cast as the lead. As Dani Trant in The Man in the Moon, Witherspoon’s performance was over-the-top, receiving good reviews from critics. Roger Ebert, in particular, called the first kiss scene ‘one of the most perfect little scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie.’ Witherspoon’s exemplary performance earned her a Young Artist Award, automatically placing her amongst promising up-and-coming actresses that year. Since then, Witherspoon has been a strong force in the business, appearing on both television shows and the big screen. Two years

It feels like we all are having a Reese Witherspoon moment this Emmy season while celebrating a culmination of what the actress has achieved since her coming-of-age film debut in 1991’s “The Man in the Moon.” She may be nominated for six Emmys as both an actress and a producer this year for Hulu’s “Little Fires Everywhere,” Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” and HBO’s second season of “Big Little Lies.” What is interesting is how each of her roles feature strands of other parts she has played to perfection on the big screen.

When asked what enticed Lauren Neustadter to accept the job as Hello Sunshine’s head of Film and Television there was just one reason: “It’s Reese Witherspoon.” Growing up as a young girl in Louisiana, before Neustadter even thought of a career in entertainment, she was watching Witherspoon in the 1991 feature “The Man in the Moon,” admiring the skill it took to act out complex emotions.
Now that Neustadter and Witherspoon are working on adapting and producing series and movies those emotions are at the center of every choice they make. Their latest offering, out today on Hulu, is a limited-series adaptation of Celeste Ng’s novel “Little Fires Everywhere” focusing on a nomadic woman named Mia (Kerry Washington) who butts heads with the elegant Elena (Witherspoon). The series navigates a variety of topics, from race to femininity, motherhood and class, and for Hello Sunshine nuance is the name of the game.

Robert Mulligan’s late career gem is a beautiful, fad-free tale of teenage romance with universal appeal, famed for introducing Reese Witherspoon to the screen. She’s truly a sensation, as is the actress Emily Warfield as the older sister who ‘steals’ Reese’s beau. Photographed by Freddie Francis, this tops even Mulligan’s To Kill a Mockingbird.

Back in 1991, a young Reese Witherspoon made a remarkably assured dramatic debut in the nostalgic The Man in the Moon. She made a memorable mark in Alexander Payne's Election, but she really broke into the mainstream with her bright and sunny performance as Elle Woods in the broad comedy Legally Blonde. A few years later, she earned an Academy Award for her sterling performance in Walk the Line and since then has continued to impress with her dramatic abilities in movies like Mud and, especially Wild, the latter of which earned her another Oscar nomination. Recently she again turned heads as part of the talented ensemble cast in HBO's Big Little Lies. Having all those roles in mind, the first trailer for the romantic comedy Home Again almost feels like a cold splash of...

August 9th is an interesting day for horror home entertainment releases, as we have two titles I never could have imagined arriving on Blu-ray, and that’s always a great thing for fans.
Synapse Films has given both of Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case sequels an HD overhaul, and for those who may have missed the Turkish horror movie Baskin during its release earlier this year, Scream Factory and IFC Midnight have teamed up for the film’s Blu-ray / DVD combo pack, which arrives on Tuesday as well.
Other notable releases on August 9th include 11.22.63, Dark Waves, and Alone in the Ghost House.
Basket Case 2 (Synapse Films, Blu-ray)
Duane Bradley and his surgically-separated twin brother Belial return in this frightfully gory follow-up to Frank Henenlotter’s original monster movie classic, Basket Case. After surviving a fall from a hospital window, the two brothers become media targets.

By 1913, the American film industry had been around for over twenty years. In 1909 Carl Laemmle, a renegade and maverick movie mogul and film distributor, founded his own company in New York — the Yankee Film Company. Laemmle also started producing movies in Fort Lee, New Jersey that same year. His first company was called the Independent Motion Pictures (Imp) Company, aka Imp Studios. Soon however, Laemmle would be making plans to journey West where he would expand his film production and in 1912 co-founded the Universal Film Manufacturing Co.

The most popular film actor in the world 100 years ago was a St. Louis native. Literally the first “movie star”, King Baggot was the first actor to have his name above the title and his stardom marked the first time that audiences went to see a movie because a certain actor was in that film. Born in St. Louis in 1879 and raised in a house on Union Boulevard, King Baggot attended CBC High School and at one time worked for the St. Louis Browns in ticket sales. Baggot was tall and handsome, a blue-eyed Irish boy with a distinctive white streak through his dark hair and the subject of much adoring fan mail. It’s hard to overestimate just how popular King Baggot was in his prime. He was heralded as “King of the Movies,” “The Most Photographed Man in the World” and “The Man Whose Face Is As Familiar As The Man In The Moon.” After his acting career faded, King Baggot became a successful director for Universal Studios. Most of his films are long lost and despite his one-time fame, he is now somewhat forgotten, even here in his home town.
The Missouri History Museum will shine a spotlight on the star with The King Baggot Tribute, a celebration of his career. The event will be held on Wednesday, September 28th beginning at 7pm at Lee Auditorium inside the Missouri History Museum (Lindell and DeBaliviere in Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri). This is a Free event!
The program will consist a rare screening of the 1913 epic Ivanhoe, which runs 49 minutes. We screened Ivanhoe at the King Baggot Tribute that was part of The St. Louis International Film Festival in November of 2014. That time, we rented a 35mm print of the film from the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It had Dutch intertitles, so I had to translate them, from the podium, while the rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra accompanied the film. This time, we have transferred the film to digital format and have burned English intertitles over the Dutch ones.
Based Sir Walter Scott’s 1820 novel of romance and medievalism. Ivanhoe was filmed at Chepstow Castle in Wales, on top of cliffs overlooking the River Wye and was the first example of an American studio sending a cast and crew to Europe to film at a remote location. St. Louis native King Baggot plays Ivanhoe, the Saxon Knight who returns from the Holy Lands to England. There he teams up with Robin Hood to rescue his father Sir Cedric, who has been captured by the evil Prince John. Leah Baird plays Rebecca, the Jewish maiden who loves Ivanhoe and the film’s director Herbert Brenon co-stars as Isaac of York. The rest of the large cast was made up of local Welsh actors. The lively and ambitious Ivanhoe, filled with pageantry, lavish sets, costumed horses, epic battle scenes and swordfights was a box-office smash in 1913 and made King Baggot an international star.

Reese Witherspoon could win her second best actress Oscar for her role in Wild -- but back in 1991, she was the bright-eyed 15-year-old starring in her very first movie, The Man in the Moon. Et sat down with the young actress, just before the movie was released.
The young actress shared her first on-screen kiss in the film with co-star Jason London, which had Reese reminiscing about her first real-life smooch.
"My first was in a roller-skating rink," said Reese. "I was 12 years old, and I had a boyfriend, and his name was Graham, and he was a pretty good kisser -- pretty good, Graham!"

Way to go, Graham! But navigating Hollywood wasn't always easy for the young actress.

“I’ve done some movies that aren’t challenging at all,” a newly reinvigorated Reese Witherspoon confessed in an interview with Vulture a few months back.
That’s most certainly true, although recently the actress has dug in deep for a set of unquestionably challenging projects. In addition to a starring role in the Lost Boys of Sudan drama The Good Lie, Witherspoon produced David Fincher’s stellar missing-wife thriller Gone Girl and pops up in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice. She also took on her guttiest role in years with Wild, which is based on the best-selling memoir by Cheryl Strayed and casts Witherspoon as a soul-searching woman embarking on a thousand-mile hike.
Breaking into Hollywood at age 14 with the 1991 coming-of-age drama, The Man In The Moon, Witherspoon originally made her name with a double dose of dark teen drama: Cruel Intentions and the wry Election in 1999.

Believe it or not, Reese Witherspoon has been a leading lady for nearly 25 years.
After a string of starring roles while still just a teenager, Witherspoon truly broke out in "Pleasantville" (1998) as a 1990s high schooler transported to the '50s. It was her turn as the perky Elle Woods in "Legally Blonde" (2001), though, that proved the actress was here to stay. Since then, her career has only blossomed (Oscar, included), and this holiday season, the actress seeks salvation on a 1000-mile hike in the docudrama "Wild."
From her years spent in Germany to her favorite thing about being a mom, here are 35 things you (probably) don't know about Reese Witherspoon.
1. Reese Witherspoon was born March 22, 1976 in New Orleans, Louisiana to John Draper Witherspoon Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Reese.
2. Her birth name is Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon.
3. Witherspoon's father was an otolaryngologist, while her mother was a professor of nursing at Vanderbilt University.

For this week’s brand new spotlight piece, I wanted to cite an A-lister who is having one really good 2014, to say the least. It’s Reese Witherspoon, an Academy Award winning actress who only this year is finally solidifying her status not just as a star, but as a supremely talented actress as well. It’s high time too, as she’s given more top quality performances than a lot of people realize. From some of her early work to the performance that won her the Oscar, Witherspoon has become a deserving member of the A-list, though someone who doesn’t always get the credit that she truly deserves. As such, it’s only appropriate today to put the spotlight on her. Here we go… Witherspoon got her start with a few head turning roles in smaller films, starting with The Man in the Moon, followed by A Far Off Place and Freeway,...

William S. Hart (1864-1946) was the first great star of the movie western. Fascinated by tales of the Old West, Hart actually acquired Billy the Kid’s six-shooter and was a friend with legendary lawmen Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson. He entered films in 1914 where, after playing supporting roles in shorts, achieved stardom as the lead in the western The Bargain. Hart was particularly interested in making his westerns realistic and...

“Gurth the Swineherd , do you not recognize me?”
“Ivanhoe ! My young master”
It’s been said that 75% of all silent films are lost – scrapped for their silver nitrate content, destroyed by fire, left to decompose, or simply abandoned by an industry so lacking in foresight that it neither knew nor cared about their own products value to the future. In the case of the silent films that St. Louis native King Baggot starred in, that number is closer to 99%. Baggot likely appeared in over 300 films during his most active period 1909 to 1916, mostly one-reelers (1000 feet of film running around 16 minutes). When Cinema St. Louis and I teamed up to plan the King Baggot Tribute night coming up November 14th, we knew we wanted to show one film featuring one of his performances and another that he directed. We chose to represent his directing career with the 1925 western Tumbleweeds starring William S. Hart.

He was heralded as “King of the Movies,” “The Most Photographed Man in the World” and “The Man Whose Face Is As Familiar...

The best movie culture writing from around the internet-o-sphere. There will be a quiz later. Just leave a tab open for us, will ya? “Guardians of the Galaxy Easter Eggs, Trivia and References” — Andrew Dyce at Screen Rant digs into Marvel’s latest to share some context and little things you might have missed. “The 10 best summer romances in film” — Guy Lodge at The Guardian proves we’ve been falling in love while sweating for almost a century, compiling a list that’s a bit more insider than populist. On #6: “Robert Mulligan knew the elegiac nature of an American summer: there’sTo Kill a Mockingbird, of course, but he also made a pretty good lunge for this list with the liltingly scored wartime weepie Summer of ’42. His final and most undervalued film, The Man in the Moon, combines the latter’s Rockwell romanticism with a measure of Harper Lee’s tough love – it conveys the full...
