Barry Sonnenfeld's 1991 film "The Addams Family," based on the New Yorker comic strips by Chas Addams and extrapolated from the 1964 sitcom of the same name, was a pop culture clarion call for aspiring young goths the world over. The Addams Family were a gaggle of murderous weirds who lived in a haunted mansion, kept a severed human hand as a pet, and regularly engaged in cute family games wherein they exhumed long-dead relatives. They loved blood, sex, and magic. It's possible they were immortal; the young Wednesday (Christina Ricci) regularly murdered her brother Pugsley (Jimmy Workman). Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and Gomez (Raul Julia) were sexually active to an enviable degree, perhaps standing as one of the healthiest, most sex-positive couples in movies at the time. They were full of zest and joie de vivre. Only they were obsessed with death, so perhaps the term should be joie de mourir.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”), Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), Jodie Foster (“Nyad”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Our odds currently indicate that Randolph (3/1) will emerge victorious, followed in order of likelihood by Blunt (4/1), Brooks (4/1), Ferrera (9/2), and Foster (9/2).
The only one of these five actresses with any previous Oscar bids to her name is Foster, who is also this year’s oldest nominee by two full decades. Before she bagged two lead trophies for “The Accused” (1989) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992), she broke through at age 14 with a supporting mention for “Taxi Driver” (1977), becoming the seventh youngest Oscar-nominated performer at the time. Since 47 years separate her first and second featured notices, she now holds the record for longest span between consecutive bids in a single acting category.

Seven years in the making, spanning centuries in the telling, Alice Lowe’s latest feature, Timestalker, is a strange beast. A dark comedy, a romance through the ages, a violent sci-fi, and an existential musing on the self, it’s an ambitious romp dressed in spandex and crinoline.
“When you make an independent film, you know there’s a chance you may never make one again,” says Lowe. “Any time one happens, it’s like a miracle. And I really just thought, God, if this was the last film that I ever get to make, what would I want to put in it? It’s like my gravestone in a film.”

Oscar nominations were announced in Los Angeles at 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 23. The backlash began by sunrise. Barbie received eight nominations, including for best picture, but where were individual nods for director Greta Gerwig or star Margot Robbie, the A-list architects who constructed a billion-dollar blockbuster out of an $18 plastic doll that was born in 1959? Barbie fans went berserk online, denouncing the Academy for what they saw as a sexist snub. Breathless press coverage of the controversy dominated the news cycle for days, and even Hillary Clinton weighed in to support her shunned sisters.
By Jan. 26, producer Lynda Obst had heard enough. “I have to write about this misplaced horror,” Obst unloaded on Facebook, offering a history lesson pulled from personal experience, reminding her readers that comedies rarely fare well at the Academy Awards in top categories. The Monty Python legend and director of 12 Monkeys and Brazil will be receiving his first Aardman Slapstick award for visual comedy next month. Ask him anything here
Terry Gilliam has directed 13 feature films including 1981 fantasy adventure Time Bandits with Sean Connery and John Cleese, 1995’s sci-fi thriller 12 Monkeys with Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt and 2005 fantasy adventure The Brothers Grimm with Matt Damon and Heath Ledger. It all started, of course, with 1975’s Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the first Monty Python film, which Gilliam co-wrote and starred in along with his fellow Pythons, as well as directing.
Although American-born, Gilliam renounced his American citizenship in 2006. He was nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay for 1985 sci-fi dystopian dark comedy Brazil and a Golden Globe for best director for 1991 fantasy comedy-drama The Fisher King. In 1998, he won a Bafta for outstanding contribution to cinema and, in...

Usually, when we think of holiday movies, we picture feel-good family comedies filled with light-hearted shenanigans and bittersweet life lessons. Okay, and the occasional violent slasher. While we love plenty of those movies, they’re often missing crucial elements of the holidays we experience in real life: sordid disagreements, petty bickering, and, in the words of the great Frank Costanza, the airing of grievances. Well, there’s at least one-holiday dramedy that accurately depicts how the most wonderful time of the year can bring out the worst in us: Ted Demme’s 1994 film The Ref, which tells the story of a cynical cat burglar who makes the biggest mistake of his life when he takes the wrong couple as hostages. Because these two would wear down even the most composed of criminals. It’s a snarky, acid-tongued little gem of a movie, although not necessarily one you’d want to watch with grandma and grandpa.

The working relationship between writer and director Quentin Tarantino and actor Tim Roth is excellent, going all the way back to Tarantino's first feature, "Reservoir Dogs." So when it came to his second film, "Pulp Fiction," Tarantino knew he wanted to have Roth involved in some capacity and was going to write a character in the film with him specifically in mind. That character wasn't the now-infamous Pumpkin, however, and the creation of Pumpkin and Amanda Plummer's character Honey Bunny had a whole lot to do with a hilarious request on Roth's part. It's hard to imagine "Pulp Fiction" without Pumpkin and Honey Bunny, who kick off the entire movie with their loving and slightly terrifying conversation immediately before holding up a diner at gunpoint. But according to both Roth and Tarantino, the pairing was somewhat serendipitous.
Apparently Tarantino was at the premiere of Plummer's film "The Fisher King,...

"The goal for me, always, is try to make a movie that feels timeless, that people will watch years from now," said "Mrs. Doubtfire" director Chris Columbus in a recent interview with Ktvu.
The character of Mrs. Doubtfire actually has her roots in a real person -- not a recently-divorced father pulling a desperate gambit to see more of his kids, but the owner of a second hand clothing shop in Edinburgh. The shop was called Madame Doubtfire and, colloquially, so was its owner, though her name after remarrying was Annabella Coutts. She was something of a local legend, with one Edinburgh resident recalling that she had "about half a dozen cats" and that while her shop was an excellent resource for high-quality second hand goods,...

In the third and final season of "Star Trek: Picard," a vicious Changeling named Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer) is eager to apprehend Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Vadic is a vicious killer who has no compunction about blowing up ships and murdering thousands. It seems she and several of her Changeling compatriots were medically tortured during the Dominion War (a conflict dramatized on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine") and was in no mood to offer forgiveness. Vadic commanded a starship she called the Shrike, a massive, pointy, claw-like vessel that was armed to the teeth. Captain Riker (Jonathan Frakes) took one look at the Shrike and declared it to be more guillotine than starship.

Jamie Lee Curtis Remembers ‘Halloween’ Producer Debra Hill as “Ride or Die” Best Friend at PGA Event
Jamie Lee Curtis turned up at UTA headquarters in Beverly Hills on Thursday to help the Producers Guild of America announce the recipient of a fellowship bestowed upon a producer identified as a next-generational talent. Before she handed over the certificate, the Oscar winning actress looked to the past to honor the fellowship’s namesake, the late Debra Hill, a beloved friend and colleague from the Halloween franchise.
Curtis, an early riser who joked that she was out past her typical sunset curfew, said the franchise has been dissected in everything from books to college courses (“literally, PhDs have been earned on Halloween“) as people have attempted to get to the root of its appeal and meaning. She credited director John Carpenter as a “great guy, a wonderful director,” who co-wrote the film with Hill, but noted that it was the female storytelling that also helped the movie rise above.

The remarkable Robin Williams remains a comedy icon, and even though he is gone, the legacy of his film work lives on. Equally adept at outrageous comedy and sensitive drama, Williams was a one-of-a-kind performer, one whose unique style will likely never be equaled. He tragically died on August 11, 2014.
After success as a stand-up comic and television stardom via “Mork and Mindy,” Williams turned to film and achieved success far beyond what his TV success could have indicated. He won an Academy Award for “Good Will Hunting” (1997), one of four Oscar nominations he earned in his career. Williams also earned two Screen Actors Guild Awards (for 1996’s “The Birdcage” and “Good Will Hunting”) and received nine Golden Globe nominations, winning statues for 1987’s “Good Morning, Vietnam,” 1991’s “The Fisher King,” 1993’s “Aladdin” and 1994’s “Mrs. Doubtfire.”

Terry Gilliam walks, trots actually, through the white alleys of Monopoli. Humming as he goes: “I’ve got two legs from my hips to the ground/And when they move they walk around/And when I lift them they climb the stairs/And when I shave them they ain’t got hairs.”
“That’s the most important and well-known song I’ve ever written,” he jokes, “and I understand this now more than ever: Being an almost 83-year-old man, I thank my legs every day. They haven’t betrayed me yet!”
Far from being an “old man,” Gilliam remains a force of nature. In person, he is almost too much: At turns sensitive, raw and irreverent, with a razor-sharp intelligence and irrepressible imagination. Just in time for Succession‘s end, let’s look at method acting. The Criterion Channel are highlighting the controversial practice in a 27-film series centered on Brando, Newman, Nicholson, and many other’s embodiment of “an intensely personal, internalized, and naturalistic approach to performance.” That series makes mention of Marilyn Monroe, who gets her own, 11-title highlight––the iconic commingling with deeper cuts.
Pride Month offers “Masc,” a consideration of “trans men, butch lesbians, and gender-nonconforming heroes” onscreen; the Michael Koresky-curated Queersighted returning with a study of the gay best friend; and the 20-film “LGBTQ+ Favorites.” Louis Garrel’s delightful The Innocent (about which I talked to him here), the director’s cut of Gregg Araki’s The Doom Generation, and Stanley Kwan’s hugely underseen Lan Yu make streaming premieres, while Araki’s Totally F***ed Up and Mysterious Skin also get a run. Could you imagine a world where Terry Gilliam’s Brazil doesn’t exist? It’s a dark territory, I know. Would you believe Universal almost shelved the filmmaker’s dystopian sci-fi drama in America before one of its stars, Robert De Niro, rescued the film from cancelation? According to Gilliam, the brilliant director behind films like The Fisher King and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Universal balked at the film and demanded significant changes before it could open in theaters. After an exhausting back and forth between Gilliam and then-Universal chief Sid Sheinberg, De Niro used his connections to push the film’s fate in a more positive direction.
Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast, Gilliam said, “The studio did not like the movie at all.” Gilliam says he was on pins and needles during a screening where Universal executives looked pensive and distraught about Brazil.

At this point, it's probably not a spoiler to say that a key "Yellowjackets" character is alive and somewhat well. That character is Vanessa "Van" Palmer (Lauren Ambrose and Liv Hewton), and if we're being honest, she's kind of living the best life out of all the show's plane crash survivors. Why is that? Well, she has her own video and DVD rental business, While You Were Streaming, smack dab in the middle of an undisclosed Pennsylvanian town. If you are even the slightest bit familiar with the work we do here at Slash Film dot com, it shouldn't be a surprise that we consider this the best possible fate to have.
What also isn't surprising is that Van has very good taste in movies, and also knows a thing or two about Hollywood's bizarre queer history. That's because While You Were Streaming is filled with Easter eggs to mainstream queer cinema,...

For centuries, actors have endured a unique position in society. After dazzling audiences with their talent on the silver screen or stage, many talented individuals move behind the camera to become directors. With this transition comes great respect from those who recognize their performances as an actor and their skills in directing films that capture hearts and minds worldwide in spectacular fashion.

This post contains spoilers through the seventh episode in season 3 of "Star Trek: Picard."
As of this writing, seven episodes of "Star Trek: Picard" have aired, and we've learned many secrets about the show's primary antagonist, Vadic (Amanda Plummer). Captaining a ship called the Shrike, Vadic has the ability to form weaponized portals in space and uses this technology to redirect enemy fire back at them. The Shrike can also fling entire starships using its overpowered tractor beam, and a lot of dialogue has been devoted to how well-armed it is. Vadic projects a slithery intensity when talking to her potential foes, and sports facial scars and the slicked-forward hairstyle of a proper supervillain. Vadic, however, becomes scared in private when talking to her Changeling commanding officer. Her villainous arrogance is merely a show.
We eventually learn that Vadic is also a Changeling. Following the Dominion War (a central event...

On the new season of "Star Trek: Picard," actress Amanda Plummer plays a mysterious character named Vadic, the captain of a massive, overpowered weapons craft called the Shrike. Vadic is something of a mystery. She's very clear that she wishes to apprehend Jack Crusher (Ed Speelers) to collect the bounty on his head, but she seems willing to commit horrendous acts of villainy in order to do it. Either Jack's bounty is massive, or something else even more mysterious is afoot.
Vadic is more than a mysterious and determined bounty hunter, though. She is an outright villain. The bridge of the Shrike is a dim, misty space, and she sits in her captain's chair like it's a throne of skulls. She wears red gloves, slicks her hair forward, and sports scars on her cheeks. There is something not-so-vaguely fascistic about her wardrobe. She has a crew, but it's difficult to...

Criterion begin this year (or just go into their fourth month) with a bang. Three 4K releases will mark April: The Seventh Seal (what black levels your Oled will register), The Fisher King, and Triangle of Sadness, surely the fastest theatrical-to-4K pipeline Criterion’s yet managed. Do whatever you will with arguments about Bergman as a still-standing pillar of the canon, try processing the information that Terry Gilliam is one of very few filmmakers to get multiple such releases from Criterion, or grouse that, like seemingly everybody else, you didn’t much enjoy Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner––it’s nice seeing this many 4K outings in one fell swoop.

Looking back, it's a small miracle that "The Addams Family" became the box office smash that it did when the pitch-black comedy debuted in theaters over Thanksgiving in 1991. According to a Variety interview for the film's 30th anniversary, director Barry Sonnenfeld painted a pretty grim picture for the film that got caught up in a studio change when Orion Pictures was suddenly sold to Paramount halfway through filming. "The whole second half of the shoot we were working for a studio that thought we were uncuttable and unreleasable, so things got more difficult," Sonnenfeld said. "They stopped letting us have bottled water on the set." That seems like a bizarre way for executives to cut costs. Was the water budget for "The Addams Family" really that out of control?
Of course, "The Addams Family" ended up grossing close to 200 million globally, spawning the even funnier sequel "Addams Family Values." Two highly successful animated versions,...

Stand-up comedians are some of the neediest people on the planet. Their livelihood hinges on their laugh-provoking expertise, and every single performance can feel like a make-or-break referendum on their funniness. Even the greats feel this pressure. In the 2002 documentary "Comedian," Jerry Seinfeld observes that an established, widely beloved comic only gets a slim grace period between taking the stage and delivering the goods. People are paying a two-drink minimum — they expect to laugh.
Every comedian has an off-night, but I have a hard time envisioning what that looked like for Robin Williams. Ditto, Eddie Murphy. With Williams, you knew he was going to remove the restraining bolt from his brain and access that deep reservoir of jokes and references and spot-on impersonations with dizzying speed. Murphy was different. He exuded confidence, deftly gliding from bit to bit, secure in the knowledge that he could only kill. Maybe that's why...

The cast for Star Trek: Picard’s third and final season gets better and better. At the show’s New York Comic Con panel today, Saturday, October 8, fans learned that Emmy-winning actress Amanda Plummer will be a big bad in the action to come. The actress, daughter of the late Christoper Plummer, has three Emmys and a Tony Award to her name, and she has made her mark on the big screen, too, in films including The Fisher King, Pulp Fiction, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. In Picard, she’ll play Vadic, “the mysterious alien captain of the Shrike, a warship that has set its sights on Jean-Luc Picard [Patrick Stewart] and his old crewmates from his days on the Enterprise,” as Paramount+ explains. The trailer for Season 3, shown at Sunday’s Nycc event, shows Vedic seeking vengeance against Picard and vowing that “the night will brighten with the ashes of the Federation.

Heading into the mid-1990s, Robin Williams was one of the most bankable stars going, but he was far from infallible. "Awakenings," "The Fisher King," "Aladdin" and "Mrs. Doubtfire" were bona-fide hits, but they were interspersed with massive flops like "Toys" and "Being Human." So while people flocked to Williams when cast in a compelling role, they didn't turn up just because his name and face were on the poster.
So when Barry Levinson reached out to his "Good Morning, Vietnam" star to provide the filmmaker's critically acclaimed, yet low-rated NBC drama "Homicide: Life on the Streets" a bit of must-see sizzle, there was no guarantee that his guest appearance alone would bolster the series' Nielsen profile -- particularly since he was cast as a tourist/father coping with the murder of his wife. Nevertheless, the episode in question, titled "Bop Gun," was slated as the show's heavily promoted season premiere.

Terry Gilliam has almost never had an easy time making a movie. The former Monty Python member has a filmography that stretches nearly five decades, and nearly every film he has made has been a butting of heads between a director with an unbridled imagination you can't really reign in and people who would very much like to make their money back on their investment (who rarely do). Most famously, there was the saga of trying to get "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" made that took nearly 30 years. The documentary "Lost in La Mancha" chronicles the crumbling production in the year 2000, and it would still take over 15 years after that film's release for "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" to be a completed picture. Gilliam makes films like no one else, and while we can marvel at their visual ingenuity, they rarely make for sturdy commercial prospects.

The as-of-yet untitled project is helmed by another Oscar nominee, Richard Lagravenese. The director of The Fisher King also co-wrote the rom-com alongside Carrie Solomon. According to Deadline, the plot will center on a "surprising romance which kicks off comic consequences for a young woman, her mother and her movie star boss as they face the complications of love, sex, and identity." I'd imagine that Koshy is portraying the "young woman," though the specific casting details have not been announced.

The late Robin Williams always knew how to plant a smile on your face. His manic comedy hardly allowed you a chance to breathe before he was already on another joke -- the "Jumanji" actor was truly one of the greatest to ever do it. It's really easy to see him simply as a comedic actor with commercial hits like "Aladdin" and "Mrs. Doubtfire," but a lot of the roles he chose reflected his versatility as an actor. He could play against type like nobody's business.

Terry Gilliam's 1991 Oscar-winning tragedy "The Fisher King" is raw and difficult. It's a film that appears to be a lighthearted, almost slapstick farce in certain scenes, but delves into heady themes of homelessness, mental illness, trauma, and guilt on a dime. It was a startlingly soulful film from a director who was then known for his kooky work with Monty Python, the acclaimed-but-argued-over "Brazil," and the not entirely well-received "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen." In contrast to those, it seemed "The Fisher King" had proven that Gilliam was maturing as a filmmaker.

"The Fisher King" has always been my favorite Terry Gilliam movie, but I only saw it again recently for the first time since its star, Robin Williams, died so tragically in 2014. I guess what kept me away for so long was the feeling that, given that some of its themes are so closely linked to depression, mental illness, and suicide, it might feel a little too close to the bone, or even intrusive.

The show will be written and directed by Oscar nominee Richard Lagravenese and follows the aspirational and timeless story about the glamourous women living at the Barbizon Hotel in post-wwii New York City.
Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Benny Medina will produce under their Nuyorican Productions. Julie Goldstein is also producing.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bill Bost are producing for Skydance TV.
The Barbizon Hotel, located at 140 East 63rd St. on the Manhattan’s Upper East Side, was for several decades a female-only residential hotel for young women who came to NYC for professional opportunities. Built in 1927, the 23-story hotel was a blend of Italian Renaissance and late Gothic revival and Islamic decorative elements. No men were allowed above the ground floor, and strict dress and conduct rules were enforced.
