Severin Films kicks off the new year with three North American premieres that bring “one of the best labels in physical media” (Polygon) into 2024 replete with classic monsters, barbed-wire garrotes, ‘80s Italo-Sleaze in Uhd and arguably the most depraved bedtime accessory ever created.
For January, Severin presents the ultimate version of Jess Franco’s 1972 mash-up Dracula, Prisoner Of Frankenstein; the rarely-seen Ozploitation slasher Bloodmoon, complete with infamous ‘Fright Break Challenge’; and Andrea Bianchi’s off-the-rails zombie carnage classic Burial Ground, now in eye-popping, flesh-ripping 4K.
To further celebrate everyone’s favorite shambling Etruscans, an all-new Burial Ground t-shirt and Michael Pillowcase will be available in two of this month’s bundles.
January also brings much-requested wide-release versions of previously limited-edition titles — Frank Henenlotter’s black comedy shocker Bad Biology, controversial ‘80s sleaze classic Nightmare and Lucio Fulci’s giallo masterpiece The Psychic — all fully restored in 4K Uhd.

Pete Davidson is just as proud of his mom as she is of him. Since making his "Saturday Night Live" debut in 2014, the comedian has spoken out about his childhood on numerous occasions and has included his mom, Amy Waters Davidson, in episodes of "SNL" among other things. Pete was born on Nov. 16, 1993, to Amy, a school nurse, and Scott Davidson, a New York City firefighter who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks when the comedian was just 7 years old.
The loss of his dad hit Pete hard, and his mom did everything she could to make sure he was happy. "It was sad how sad he was growing up," Amy told the New York Times in an October 2015 interview while discussing how Pete began pursuing comedy as a young teen. "He had a tough time growing up without a dad - I wanted him to be happy, and this made him really,...

Star comic and ‘Saturday Night Live’ host Pete Davidson discussed “the horrible images and stories from Israel and Gaza.” Davidson said: “And I know what you’re thinking, Who better to comment on it than Pete Davidson? Well, in a lot of ways, I am a good person to talk about because when I was seven years old, my dad was killed in a terrorist attack. So I know something about what that’s like.”
“I saw so many terrible pictures this week. Children suffering, Israeli children and Palestinian children. And it took me back to a really horrible, horrible place. No one in this world deserves to suffer like that, especially not kids.
“After my dad died, my mom tried pretty much everything she could do to cheer me up. I remember one day when I was eight, she got me what she thought was a Disney movie. But...

For the premiere of its 49th season, Saturday Night Live skipped its regularly scheduled sketch parodying the week’s news. Instead, host Pete Davidson delivered, in a rare staid demeanor, a solemn cold open addressing the Israel-Hamas war.

And I know what you’re thinking, who better to comment on it than Pete Davidson?,” says Davidson, who shared a personal connection to the ongoing trauma. “Well, in a lot of ways I am a good person to talk about it because when I was 7 years old, my dad was killed in a terrorist attack. This weekend’s Saturday Night Live opened on a serious note, as the long-running NBC sketch comedy series is wont to do in the wake of real-life tragedy.
A December 2012 SNL, for example, opened with the New York City Children’s Chorus singing “Silent Night,” days after the Sandy Hook school shooting. Similarly, a February 2022 episode opened with the Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of New York singing “Prayer for Ukraine,” days after Russia attacked Kyiv.

Saturday Night Live departed from its usual cold open with a heartfelt message from Pete Davidson about Israel’s war with Hamas.
Davidson opened by discussing the “horrible images” from Israel and Gaza and related it to his own tragedy, of losing his father when he was a child on 9/11 – Davidson’s father, Scott Davidson, was a New York City firefighter who was killed at the World Trade Center.

For those of us who grew up with comedian and actor Eddie Murphy, our first exposure to this gifted entertainer was on Saturday Night Live’s “Mister Robinson’s Neighborhood“.
For decades now, Murphy has always been there, whether on TV or in the movies, and continues to have loyal, diehard fans who grew up in the 80’s to his hilarious standups “Delirious” and “Raw”, as well as his pop single “Party All The Time”.
Personally, while my siblings and I were in high school, after moving cross country from Connecticut to Idaho, Murphy saved us as we listened repeatedly to the cassette of Delirious in 1984. He had us laughing and made us forget our feelings of being the “new kids” in a new town at a new school.

Director-producer Richard Donner, best known for helming the “Lethal Weapon” film series, “The Goonies” and the original “Superman” film, died on Monday. He was 91.
Donner’s production company confirmed news of his death to Variety, though the cause was not disclosed.
Though not his first bigscreen effort, his big feature break came with 1976’s “The Omen,” starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick. Thereafter, he brought his craftsmanship to the first “Superman.” He also branched out into producing, usually with his wife Lauren Shuler Donner — he executive produced the huge 2000 success “X-Men” and later the prequel “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” But his career was highlighted by the “Lethal Weapon” series, starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, which elevated him to the ranks of directors generating more than a billion dollars in box office.
Born Richard Donald Schwartzberg in the Bronx, he attended Parker Junior College and then NYU, where he majored in business and theater.

When Marlon Riggs’ best-known work, “Tongues Untied,” premiered on PBS nationwide in 1991, some stations around the country wouldn’t run it. The program became a political talking point when candidate Pat Buchanan weaponized the landmark documentary during the 1992 Republican Party presidential primaries, and the deeply personal essay on the experiences of Black gay men and the search for identity was at the center of a culture war. Condemned as “pornographic” by right-wing pundits who distorted the film’s content, “Tongues Untied” was debated in the halls of Congress as the movie became the centerpiece of a wider debate — namely, how the National Endowments of the Arts (Nea) distributes its funding. “Tongues Untied” was one of many recipients, having received a $5,000 grant.
Riggs hit back with a fiery New York Times op-ed titled “Meet the New Willie Horton,” and didn’t mince words. “Because my film, ‘Tongues Untied,’ affirms the lives and dignity of [Black] gay men,...

"They're just people, no different from you and me." Anyone remember this one? Shout Factory debuted a new trailer for an indie film titled Delirious, now being re-released as a special "Director's Cut" edition after more than 12 years. This originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007 (and I reviewed it way back then!) and years later Tom Dicillo has come back to it and secured the rights and restored it to his original version. "Just before its original release some editing choices were forced upon me which I've always regretted. When I finally found the [rights] owner... I jumped at the chance to restore the film to its original cut. I wrote it for Steve Buscemi and he delivers one of his finest performances. I'm thrilled this Director's Cut will give people a chance to appreciate it." Buscemi stars a paparazzi who takes in a strange homeless kid, played by Michael Pitt,...

Steve Buscemi has no shortage of iconic roles. We’re talking about the actor that has turned in incredible performances in projects such as “Ghost World,” “Reservoir Dogs,” “The Sopranos,” “Boardwalk Empire,” and “Fargo,” just to name several. But one of his more underseen and underrated performances is in the 2006 feature, “Delirious.” And for those who haven’t had the chance to catch his work in that film, there’s good news, as director Tom Dicillo returns to his film more than a decade later to craft a new Director’s Cut.

Les (Steve Buscemi) is a small-time paparazzi with dreams of making it big. His luck changes for the better when he befriends a young homeless kid, Toby (Michael Pitt), and makes him his assistant. In this corner is the current holder of the Emmy title of Best Comedy Guest Actor, Luke Kirby, who isn’t a stand-up but plays one quite convincingly on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” — namely, the controversial comic and free speech advocate Lenny Bruce, who died in 1966. Opposite him is real-life joke-meister Eddie Murphy, the “Saturday Night Live” cast member who took to the big screen in two must-see stand-up specials in the ’80s, HBO’s “Delirious” and the concert film “Raw.”

When audio engineer Peggy McCreary was recording Prince for his 1999 album, she didn’t immediately recognize his genius. “I had no idea who he was when I first started working with him,” she recalls. She had met him around the time he made his third LP, Controversy, and unlike Prince, who was in his early twenties, she had a string of hit albums in her list of credits, including Van Halen’s debut and Elton John’s 21 at 23. She watched Prince jump from instrument to instrument, recording and mixing songs...

Purple Rain may be Prince’s biggest-selling and arguably best album, but 1999 was his most pivotal. After releasing four scandalously excellent records of erotic R&b, he put some pants on, toned down the Lothario act, and rebranded himself as a pop savant, and the record’s synthy crossover bids like “Delirious” and “1999” coupled with the steamy vulnerability of “Little Red Corvette” set him up for superstardom. But perhaps the most surprising aspect of 1999’s success was that it was a double album without too much bloat (though the lyrics...

Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades at Daily Variety. In this weekly column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business.
Fleming: As I watched Kevin Hart on The People’s Choice Awards grow introspective about second chances and feelings of morality after fracturing his spine and nearly dying in a terrible car accident, I wondered if he might reconsider hosting the Academy Awards.
His messy exit last year – which came after old homophobic social media messages were unearthed and served up for scrutiny as soon as Deadline revealed that Hart was getting the job – perpetuated a flawed notion that awards shows are better without hosts. I thought the pace of the last Oscars suffered without a host and that the recent host-less Emmys were damn near unwatchable. I am glad to hear that after last year’s dull...

Welcome to this review of Ring Of Honor: Unauthorized – Hanukkah Comes Early: Eight Crazy Matches, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and I didn’t name the f—–g thing. Oy! Arbor Day is for losers. Who needs a planet when you can have a super-model for breakfast? My political leanings aside, this is a show that is (supposedly) run by Colt Cabana, so expect Jimmy Dean kissing a donkey.
Match #1: Ultimo Guerrero defeated Jonathan Gresham The following is courtesy of rohwrestling.com:
Joe Hendry joined Ian Riccaboni on commentary and proceeded to sing all of his comments. Guerrero pinned Gresham after the Cmll legend hit Guerrero Especial from the top rope.
My Opinion: 3.5 out of 5 – This was a fabulous match that had to endure Joe Hendry on commentary…singing! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Jesus f—k. Why would you have Hendry sing while Ian is doing commentary? Would you...

It is mightily important to have an knockout script to work with when starring in a movie that has hopes for awards season attention. But it might be even more essential to have a compelling off-screen narrative that convinces voters that a performer is even more deserving of being granted a gold trophy.
One of the more popular tropes to latch onto while stumping for kudos? The career comeback. Think Matthew McConaughey capping off his so-called McConaissance with a lead actor Oscar win for 2013’s “Dallas Buyers Club.”
This year, there are four noteworthy but very different thespians who are bouncing back on the big screen with a perfectly tailored role to showcase their talents. Their common ground? All are playing characters based on real people.

Eddie Murphy has had plenty of people urging him to return to standup comedy for the first time since the late 1980s — but one fan’s input in particular left an impression: former President Barack Obama.
Murphy, during an interview with “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert on Friday, said Obama helped spark his interest in getting back onstage.
“Obama, yeah, when I got this Mark Twain Prize [and] I saw him in the White House, the first thing he asked me was, ‘When are you going to do standup again?'” Murphy said, imitating the ex-commander-in-chief. “And I said, ‘Maybe it’s time to do standup again.'”

Though the franchise has been on ice for some time, we keep hearing mention of Beverly Hills Cop 4 every now and then. Believe it or not, the film is still on the docket over in Tinseltown, and we finally have something concrete to report concerning the matter.
While promoting Dolemite is My Name, the legendary Eddie Murphy confessed the following to Collider, saying that, yes, a fourth installment is one of the next items on his agenda:
“Yeah, that’s what we’re doing after Coming to America, we’re doing Beverly Hills Cop and then, then the plan is to get back on stage and do stand up and then kind of that’s what I’ll be doing mostly is stand up and Beverly Hills Cop.“

Prince’s breakthrough into the mainstream will get a new reassessment this year when 1999, the blockbuster 1982 album that contained the hits “1999” and “Little Red Corvette,” comes out as a souped-up, remastered reissue on November 29th. The massive super-deluxe edition of the reissue contains five CDs and a DVD (or 10 LPs and a DVD) with 35 previously unreleased audio tracks and a full concert film that was previously unofficially circulated. Look who’s back! Famed comedian Eddie Murphy is planning to launch his career revitalization by hosting Saturday Night Live later this season. The comeback will then continue with a Netflix movie entitled Dolemite Is My Name and the highly-anticipated sequel Coming to America 2. Following all that, though, the actor will come full circle to return to where it all started out for him: the stand-up stage.
The 58-year-old is in talks with the aforementioned streaming service to stand behind the mic for the first time in decades. Netflix sounds like they’re offering him a zaftig amount of money to perform a stand-up special or two as well as $70 million for a couple hours of hilarity is nothing to sneeze at, even for a guy whose net worth is around $120 million. Plus, these routines will definitely be the talk of the entertainment industry upon their release. If they’re...

You can go home again. Eddie Murphy has already announced he’s returning as a host to Saturday Night Live in its upcoming season after a long hiatus. Now, he’s hinting that another homecoming of sorts is in the works, as he said on a podcast that he would be mounting a stand-up tour in 2020.
Murphy has been rumored to be talking with Netflix about a series of stand-up specials. His past efforts, including 1983’s Delirious and 1987’s Raw, were enormously popular, and he commanded arena-level crowds before he went on to bigger and better things in films.
Now, with a new Netflix movie, Dolemite Is My Name, and his highly anticipated return to a beloved character in the forthcoming Coming To America 2, the time may be right for him to remind the world of his stand-up skills.

Dolemite Is My Name!
Stung by a string of showbiz failures, floundering comedian Rudy Ray Moore (Academy Award nominee Eddie Murphy) has an epiphany that turns him into a word-of-mouth sensation: step onstage as someone else. Borrowing from the street mythology of 1970s Los Angeles, Moore assumes the persona of Dolemite, a pimp with a cane and an arsenal of obscene fables. However, his ambitions exceed selling bootleg records deemed too racy for mainstream radio stations to play.
Moore convinces a social justice-minded dramatist (Keegan-Michael Key) to write his alter ego a film, incorporating kung fu, car chases, and Lady Reed (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), an ex-backup singer who becomes his unexpected comedic foil. Despite clashing with his pretentious director, D’Urville Martin (Wesley Snipes), and countless production hurdles at their studio in the dilapidated Dunbar Hotel, Moore’s Dolemite becomes a runaway box office smash and a defining movie of the Blaxploitation era.

Don’t call it a comeback!
Eddie Murphy is reportedly in talks with Netflix to grace the stage for the first time in decades. The streaming service is reportedly offering the legendary comedian somewhere in the ballpark of $70 million to perform a stand-up special or two. While Murphy isn’t exactly hurting for money, it’s hard for anyone to turn down that kind of dough. An event like this could be exactly what the notorious funnyman needs to accelerate his upcoming return to Hollywood, too.
The 58-year-old was once the most hilarious man in the world. His comedy specials Raw and Delirious are often heralded as some of the funniest stand-ups of all-time. Murphy’s film career was just as iconic as well, headlined by movies like Coming to America, Trading Places, The Nutty Professor, Dr. Doolittle, Norbit, Daddy Day Care, Dreamgirls, the Shrek franchise and more.

Chicago – It was 25 years ago today – March 4th, 1994 – that comic actor John Candy died on the set of the film “Wagons East.” It was his 45th feature film, that extended back 21 years. One of his co-stars was John C. McGinley, best known as the irascible Perry Cox on the sitcom “Scrubs.” In a HollywoodChicago.com exclusive soundbite below, McGinley describes the atmosphere on the fateful day the cast was told of Candy’s passing.
John Candy was born in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. After college he had a bug for performing, and eventually ended up in Toronto with the Canadian branch of “The Second City,” which included fellow performers Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy. Radner and Aykroyd went to “Saturday Night Live,” and Candy, O’Hara, Levy, Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, Harold Ramis and Dave Thomas went on to form the hilarious “Sctv,” which gained cult...

Welcome to this week’s Ring of Honor review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have the final card before Final Battle, so let’s see what we get out of it all before the big show arrives.
Match #1: Flip Gordon versus Silas Young – I Quit Match The following is courtesy of rohwrestling.com:
Before the opening bell, Gordon — who will face Bully Ray in an I Quit Match at Final Battle on Dec. 14 — challenged Young to make it an I Quit Match. Young responded with a cheap shot to Gordon’s throat and then accepted the stipulation. Young stayed on the attack early, but Gordon rallied with a flurry of offense, including a springboard spear and a suicide dive. A fired-up Gordon then whipped Young into the guardrail, suplexed him on the floor and hit a moonsault off the top rope onto Young on the outside.

Chanchassen, Minn. – One of rock’s most legendary and mysterious figures, whose full and real name was Prince Rogers Nelson, died on April 21st, 2016, after paramedics found him unresponsive at his Paisley Park home in Chanchassen, Minnesota. No cause of death has been given. The singer was 57 years old.
Prince was born in 1958, in Minneapolis, and received his royal moniker from his father, Prince Rogers, Sr. (he was a jazz musician, it was a stage name). He showed music aptitude even as a child, and in 1975 he formed the band 94 East with his cousin. Demo tapes resulted in representation at age 17, and led to his debut “For You” on Warner Bros. records in 1978. One year later, the self-titled “Prince” album was the follow up, and yielded his first national exposure with the songs “I Wanna Be Your Lover” and “Why You Want to Treat Me So Bad.”
