Ada Maris has been a working actor in TV and film since the mid-1980s.
Over her long career, which includes co-starring in the NBC drama “Nurses,” 1986’s “About Last Night” and most recently FX’s “Mayans M.C.” and HBO Max’s “The Garcias,” the Mexican American actor has been dismayed by the stereotypical and often racist portrayals of Latinos that persist in TV and film.
Lately, however, as the streaming explosion has pushed the boundaries for premium content outlets, Maris has been encouraged by the rising number of TV shows with nuanced characters and authentic portrayals of Latino communities. But in late September, she was shocked to come across the small role of a housekeeper in the first episode of the upcoming Netflix comedy series “Uncoupled” that she found to be well over the line into offensive.

It’s been a good couple of months for R&b singer-songwriter H.E.R. She surprised us by winning Song of the Year at the Grammys on March 14 for her Black Lives Matter protest anthem “I Can’t Breathe.” Then on April 25 she followed that up by surprising us again: she won Best Song at the Oscars for “Fight for You,” another righteous song from the Black Panthers docudrama “Judas and the Black Messiah.”

Another virtual ceremony, another missing red carpet? Not for the Oscars. Just as the Academy somewhat controversially brought the nominees to the show in real life, rather than attempting the fully virtual shows we’ve seen for Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG awards, the Oscars kicked off in style Sunday with a real red carpet. Usually the pinnacle red carpet show of the year, the Oscars tried its best to bring some pre-pandemic level glamour to tonight’s awards at Los Angeles’ Union Station.

According to our Experts and users at Gold Derby as of this writing, “Nomadland” is the front-runner to win Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars with 16/5 odds. Currently in second place is “The Father” with 39/10 odds. However, the latter movie over-performed in nominations relative to our expectations, receiving six bids altogether (including Best Picture). So could “The Father” be a real threat to beat “Nomadland” for Best Adapted Screenplay?

There were a pretty remarkable number of Black and Asian Oscar nominees when the academy announced their picks on Monday morning, March 15. That’s a huge step forward for representation, but it’s hard not to notice what was missing when the Oscars announced the contenders for Best Picture. Check out the complete list of nominations here.
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” earned Best Picture nominations from the Critics Choice Awards and the Producers Guild, as well as a nomination for its ensemble cast from the Screen Actors Guild, but the film was snubbed at the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay (Ruben Santiago-Hudson).

“One Night in Miami” was nominated for that same trifecta of precursors, but it too was missing from the Best Picture Oscar lineup, and Regina King didn’t make the cut for Best Director either.

This week, with some movement in the Best Supporting Actor category, we chat about the three-man race for Oscar.
Christopher Rosen: Hello again, Joyce! Forget the highbrow critics groups. They’re influential, but the Screen Actors Guild Awards are more reflective of where Academy actors are heading. SAG and the Oscars don’t always line up, some of which is a matter of timing: Late-breaking movies often aren’t seen by enough of the SAG nominating committee. SAG voters tend to be more mainstream and younger than the Academy’s dominant actors branch, not to mention larger in number: Each year, SAG selects a new nominating committee of 2,500 members, about double the Academy voters.

Chance (Avery Konrad) is at a difficult age - too old to be contented in an ordinary school when she knows that, as a Sinclair, she's different, but too young to understand what the weight of her family name really means. After she gets in trouble for biting another girl in her class during an argument, she's sent to stay with her uncle August (Timothy V Murphy), who plans to teach her how to live up to that name. But Chance's family is deeply divided, and over the course of one night, centuries of conflict are about to come to a head.
It's not really a spoiler to say that Broil has supernatural themes, given that it screened as part of Frightfest 2020 and drops multiple hints within the first ten minutes. The Sinclair family are not vampires, they insist, but they seem to have a lot in common with.

Francis Lee’s sophomore effort sees him bolstered by a bigger budget and higher calibre of cast. Trading the Yorkshire farmlands for the Dorset coast in during the 19th Century as it tells the story of palaeontological pioneer Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) Covering her work and her romance with geologist Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), with only a few details embellished. In reality Murchison would have been twenty years older than Ronan at the time and there’s no evidence that her and Anning’s relationship went beyond friendship. However, in presupposing a Lesbian romance between the two women, Lee cements his reputation as a capable filmmaker, able to deftly craft landscape into mood.
In this case turning Lyme Regis into a grey atmosphere of hardship. Where every element is smeared with the mud and sweat of hard labour. It is an environment in which Winslet’s Mary Anning thoroughly belongs.

“You’re not supposed to mourn somebody when they are still alive”, contemplates Tusker (Stanley Tucci) when considering the future he has left with partner of 20 years Sam (Colin Firth) in one of Supernova’s many heart-breaking scenes. These are the kind of tragic dilemmas thrown up by Harry Macqueen’s fantastic sophomore feature which tackles the reality of early-onset dementia with grace and honesty. Revolving around the middle-aged couple’s campervan road-trip through the Lake District, Supernova soars thanks to Firth and Tucci’s authentic, heartfelt performances.
The pair’s journey sees them taking in memorable sights from their past and visiting family before a planned comeback gig for pianist Sam. While Macqueen doesn’t make Tusker’s illness immediately clear, it soon becomes apparent something is up when Sam finds a confused Tusker by the roadside after he wanders off during a service station stop. Never has a BFI Lff opening night film felt so immediate, so relevant to real-life events right now. 2020 has been one hell of a year so far, but a positive takeaway is the exploration of what ‘Black Lives Matter’ means, regardless of individual racial identity.
Steve McQueen starts that discussion on film with the first of his Small Axe cinematic stories, Mangrove. The director explains that Small Axe comes from a West Indian proverb translated as “together we are strong”. Mangrove visually and verbally enforces this profound saying. At the same time, the film provokes a real sense of enlightenment and, equally, shame because it asks the question of why the real-life events behind it are not part of popular general knowledge.
Mangrove was the name of the real-life Caribbean restaurant located at 8, All Saints Road in London’s Notting Hill. Opened in 1968 by the late Trinidadian community activist and...

In each of its three parts, Farewell Amor opens with Walter (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine) meeting his wife Esther (Zainab Jah) and teenage daughter Sylvia (Jayme Lawson) at the airport. He’s been in New York for 17 years, having emigrated from Angola after the civil war, and now they are finally joining him.
The film’s segments are named for each of the main characters, looking at how this new arrangement is an adjustment for each of them. Writer/director Ekwa Msangi goes back over certain moments, echoing them from different points of view in each segment, but generally sticks close to the named character in each. While New York is a culture shock (to varying degrees) for Esther and Sylvia, he is adjusted to the place, his life is shaken up by suddenly being an in-person husband and father, and we soon discover that he hasn’t been as...

Music publishing has never been more commercially vibrant — from some perspectives, at least.
Institutional investors are increasingly viewing evergreen music copyrights as hot property. Merck Mercuriadis’ Hipgnosis Songs Fund is paying notoriously high multiples to acquire songwriter and publishing catalogs, and it hit an all-time share price high in mid-September. As recently covered on Rolling Stone, Concord has spent over $100 million not once but twice this year to acquire publishing related assets (Pulse Music Group and the Imagine Dragons catalog, respectively) — and it predicts billions of Wall Street dollars are...
