This is the first and only Amityville sequel not to feature the original house.
According to an interview with director Tom Berry on the Canadian International Pictures blu-ray release, Hans Holzer, author of the novel the film is based on, hit the production with a lawsuit during pre-production for an additional $10,000. The production team, going against Tom Berry's judgment, agreed and offered to pay him the $10,000, however after submitting it, Holzer's legal team came back demanding $100,000. The production team refused and the lawsuit went to court in Denver, Colorado where the judge ruled in favor of the production team and ordered Holzer to pay all of their accumulated legal fees.
Though the source material the movie is based doesn't contain the iconic Amityville house with the eye windows (only takes place in the same town), director Tom Berry did toy with the idea of building the recognizable façade on a house and have characters make reference to it. It was decided that would be too costly so, like the novel, he decided to just have their film focus on the separate haunted house. He did tie it into the notorious original story by having characters reference the murders that were committed by Ronald DeFeo Jr. in the same town.
Director Tom Berry said the favorite portion of the film for him to shoot was anything involving the haunted confessional prop.
As of December 12, 2015, this is the only entry in the Amityville series to remain unreleased onto DVD in the United States. A limited edition bluray was released in October 2022
