While the news of the Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios agreement to work together on future Spider-Man projects is exciting to fans, it has come at a small cost. As a result of the next solo Spider-Man film being scheduled for July 28, 2017, several Marvel films have been delayed, including Black Panther. But that.s only part of what.s changing. We.ve known for months now that the Wakandan hero will be making his debut in Captain America: Civil War, but with the wall-crawler now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there.s a very good chance Marvel may be changing some things around with that project as well. For those not familiar with the original 2006 Civil War story, Spider-Man played a key role in the conflict by revealing himself as Peter Parker to the public in support of Tony Stark.s pro-registration movement - but soon afterwards switched to Captain...

Ted Field will produce writer-director Cameron Romero’s zombie origins story.
Romero will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Darrin Reed and Bryce C Campbell based on a story by Romero.
Field will produce along with Aldo Lapietra, Campbell, Reed and Romero. Mike Webber and Thomas van Dell serve as executive producers.
Production has been earmarked for later this year on the Cold War story about a science experiment that goes wrong.
“I’m a longtime fan of Night Of The Living Dead,” said Field. “I have tremendous belief in Cameron.”
“Origins is a great opportunity for me to continue the family tradition of creating haunting and ever-evolving depictions of the undead, and a great opportunity for Romero fans to see a story of zombie inception never portrayed before,” said Romero.

When American Sniper was released in a few theaters in New York and L.A. last month, it seemed like no one gave it a second thought. Critics were mixed on it, and the mainstream media largely ignored it. Boy, a lot has changed. Now that the Clint Eastwood-directed Iraq War story has been nominated for six Oscars and is on its way being one of the top-grossing movies of the year, it is no longer a film to ignore. It has become a prize for Democrats and Republicans to fight over. Conservatives hail its success as a rebuke to a left-leaning Hollywood that has, in their view, rejected movies that are sympathetic to the military. Meanwhile, liberal commentators are doing their best to expose the film’s propagandistic intent, arguing the inherent pro-war message of an Iraq War film that doesn’t bother to question the reasons America invaded in the first place. So...

With its violently kinetic camera moves and expressionistic suggestions of chaos, Confusion Through Sand is one of the best short films I’ve seen in a long time. It’s a stab at traditional animation that feels anything but traditional. It also manages to capture the fog of war in a way that’s as beautiful as it is disarming. The story follows boots on the ground as they hunt an unseen target and become targets themselves, lost in a maze of squat buildings and a field of vision blurred by beige. Writer/director Danny Madden has crafted a walled-in experience marked by sharp, punctuated sound design and a dangerous environment we can’t entirely see. The short played at SXSW, won a few other festivals and is now playing on PBS. It’s a fantastic short film that deserves all the exposure it can get, and I was surprised to see Madden’s name because of...

Yesterday, a rumor spread claiming that Sony Pictures had made a deal with Marvel Studios for the character of Spider-Man to appear in Avengers: Infinity War. It came from solid sources from the folks at Latino Review, but now Sony has officially gone on the record to deny the claim. Sony reps told the people at Cbr that it was an "old rumor" with "no validity whatsoever."
At this point, it basically comes down to which side you want to believe. If Spidey's appearance in Infinity War is supposed to be a surprise - or, more likely, if an agreement was made between the two companies, but the legal paperwork hasn't been signed yet - do you really think Sony is going to come out and confirm something like that at this point, years in advance? There's also the chance that the Sony spokesperson wasn't aware of Latino Review's new report; after all,...

Yesterday, rumors hit the internet about a ton of spoiler filled details regarding Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and more. If it's true, things are about to get even crazier in the Marvel cinematic universe. While speaking at TCA (via IGN), Captain America franchise screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely talked about Civil War, Black Panther, Agent Carter, and more.
Apparently the idea of introducing the Civil War storyline has been being discussed for awhile. McFeely explained,
“It’s been on and off the table for a while, let’s put it that way. And it’s a challenge to do it and make sure that all the characters that we’ve established, and everyone’s established in the McU are serviced and sound correct, right? Because there’s a difference between the characters in Civil War, which was written in 2006, 2007. The McU doesn’t exist [when it was written]. There isn...

Before Iron Man, cinematic superheroes lived in their self-contained bubbles. Batman never met Superman. The Fantastic Four never met Spider-Man. Even the X-Men universe was confined to mutants only. But with the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the groundwork was laid for the most exciting superhero franchise every created; one that DC is now desperate to replicate.
Phase 1 began with the introduction of four superheroes – Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Hulk (though you could argue the last one was more a reintroduction). This all culminated in Joss Whedon’s mega successful superhero team-up The Avengers. Phase 2 has continued down the sequel route, with only the Guardians Of The Galaxy giving us something entirely new. Phase 3 looks to take things up to a whole new level, with new characters and returning favourites before the mighty Infinity War story line is unleashed.

Ocsar Wilde championed the notion that life imitates art. He believed the old saying “results not merely from life’s imitative instinct, but from the fact that the self-conscious aim of Life is to find expression, and that Art offers it certain beautiful forms through which it may realize that energy.” Wilde was a miraculous writer and thinker. But sometimes the classic Aristotelian worldview he opined against proves just as accurate. Sometimes art imitates life. To my disgust, such is the case with Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier film and the history of the United States. Kind of.

As previously announced, Marvel is bringing its epic “Civil War” storyline to the big screen, beginning with Captain America 3. Assuming that such a large story is not limited to one film, it should play a part in Marvel’s Phase Three plan, leading into Avengers 3. But what about Thanos? Where does he fit into all this?
When Thanos made his surprise appearance in the closing credits of the Avengers—much to the delight of comic fans—it was assumed by most that he would be the Big Bad for the second film. However, we now know that’s not the case, as a certain malevolent robot voiced by James Spader has taken the slot of the main baddie in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Since then, it’s been assumed that Thanos—now played by Josh Brolin, as seen in Guardians of the Galaxy—would be the antagonist for the...

We recently posted news that Robert Downey Jr. is very close to signing on to play Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, in Captain America 3. Lots of readers decried the news as false despite originating from Variety, who debunks or confirms rumors, but is not in the business of creating them. Iron Man's presence in Captain America 3 would kick off a Civil War story arc to run simultaneously with the Infinity Gauntlet arc, a war on two fronts if you will.
While promoting The Judge in the U.K., Downey was asked by Yahoo about Captain America 3, which he was pretty coy about. One thing he did sneak in on the record was, "It's Gonna Be Huge".
Captain America 3 opens in theaters May 6th, 2016.

Welcome To Issue 67!
If This Is Your First Time Here: Welcome! This is my weekly column where I talk about superhero movie/TV news, rumors, and speculation. Good week for a longview, new reader!
This Week: DC throws down it's cinematic slate, Marvel tosses Iron Man into Captain America 3 and the landscape shifts into 2020.
What an interesting few days it has been for comic book superhero movies and their intertwined universes.
First up, DC, who is making a valiant effort to be both the best and the worst of superhero TV right now (to be fair, they have more not-animated shows based on their properties), has apparently locked down a new prospective order for their cinematic universe and it’s next featured characters.
Press release it up!

Last night huge news hit that Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to star in Captain America 3, which would jump start Marvel's Civil War storyline in their cinematic universe. A lot of fans are extremely excited about all of this. I know I am!
Joe and Anthony Russo are the directors who brought us Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was an amazing movie. They are now in the process of bringing the highly anticipated Captain America 3 to the screen. It sounds like the Marvel movies they direct wont stop there. If Joss Whedon decides not to come back to direct Avengers 3 and 4, the Russo brothers may be the guys to jump in and replace him. The rumor comes from Badass Digest who says,

For a good few years at this point, the road map for the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been clear to anybody paying attention. Since the central MacGuffin of Captain America: The First Avenger and the appearance of a certain purple, craggy-faced cosmic villain in the post-credits sequence to The Avengers, it’s been obvious that the interlinked superhero franchises have been building up to adapting one of the classic, crazy crossover storylines from the comic books: The Infinity Gauntlet. Everybody knows about that, right? Which is what made this morning’s bombshell all the more surprising.
Marvel totally tricked us. Or, at least, they did a sort of double-bluff with audiences – if Guardians Of The Galaxy is anything to go by, The Infinity Gauntlet is definitely coming at some point. But before that they’re apparently going to be adapting another huge crossover event to the big screen, in the form of Civil War.

Big news for comic-book fans and for Robert Downey Jr.’s ever-expanding bank account: While the fate of Iron Man 4 remains unclear, Variety reports that Downey Jr. is in "final negotiations" to bring Tony Stark to the cast of Captain America 3. While Marvel hasn’t been explicit about what this all means, it appears that the film will kick off the events of the Civil War story line from the popular Mark Millar–penned 2006–07 comics miniseries. The movie would pit Stark against Captain America's alter ego Steve Rogers as the two clash over the Superhero Registration Act, which would require superhumans to register with the U.S. government and agree to serve as a police force. The rest of our heroes would choose sides, leading to a new phase in the Marvel movie series.Perhaps giving credence to this, Marvel also teased a reboot of the Civil War...

Robert Downey Jr. has been playing coy with the idea of an Iron Man 4 lately and he continued recently telling Chicago TV (via Cbm), "This new Avengers may well be the best Marvel movie, and by the way that's saying a lot, because I thought Guardians of the Galaxy was great, and Iron Man 3 turned out great, and Cap 2 was awesome. And there'll be some surprises in the next little while too." Well, said surprises have just been announced as Variety reports Downey will join Chris Evans for Captain America 3. As for the plot: The deal is significant for the Marvel cinematic universe considering the plot will pit Stark against Captain America's alter-ego Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, as they feud over the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act...

Marvel will be rebooting the Civil War comic series to introduce the story to new readers leading up to that release of Captain America 3. The new comes from Variety, who says that the actor is in final negotiations of solidifying the deal. They also say that the movie will launch the Civil War storyline in the cinematic universe and that it will start a whole new phase from Marvel Studios.

The Deauville Film Festival heads have unveiled the make-up of the 40th edition of the fest, and naturally this coming September, we’ve got a Sundance-infused edition being readied for the North West coastal town. Celebrating several new American indie auteurs, noteworthy filmmakers from Park City include Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night), A.J. This is reprint of our review from the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. What is behind the desire to punish an audience? Truthfully, few filmmakers besides Michael Haneke maybe intentionally want to torture viewers (at least I think), but many dark and depressing indie movies attempting to explore the condition of suffering can often feel excruciating. There’s nothing inherently wrong with a grim and sad narrative—one so-called “miserablist” movie I love is “Bitiful,” and last year’s bleak “Sunshine Jr.” had a lot of value. These emotions are part of our existence, thus they shouldn’t be shied away from, but rather must be examined. But what is the value when a movie wallows in these kinds of dire feelings without ever illuminating the human condition beyond the superficial notion that grief is difficult? What then? Devastation both personal and removed shrouds “War Story” like an oppressive funeral veil devoid of light.

War Story: Weinstock’s Sophomore Feature Rides on Leigh’s Laurels
Unveiling her first film since her 2003 debut, Easy, director Jane Weinstock’s latest, The Moment, is an intriguing psychological thriller featuring an exciting and unpredictable cast. Good Intentions Cobbled: Hazanavicius Chokes on War Story Update
It’s clear to see that there were good intentions behind the making of Michael Hazanavicius latest film, The Search, a follow-up to his 2011 Best Picture winner, The Artist. Heretofore a director of silly or lighter themed fare, many of which showcase actress and wife Berenice Bejo, he dives headfirst into roiling dramatic waters with this update of Fred Zinneman’s 1948 film, headlining Montgomery Clift in his first theatrically released role (which snagged the actor an Oscar nod, as well as a win for its screenwriters and a special Oscar for child actor Ivan Jandl). Whereas the original dealt with a lost boy in an internment camp searching for his mother shortly after the end of World War II, aided by a friendly American G.I., Hazanavicius updates the tale to the 1999 Russian invasion of Chechnya, tacking on an additional perspective...

Steven Speilberg is a busy chap. A very busy chap indeed. That sounds like the start of some movie orientated nursery rhyme. Anyway, with Joel and Ethan Coen having been hired to write a new draft of a yet untitled Cold War story, the Jurassic Park director is now set to take on this movie next and following on from that, expect his ass in the director's chair of Roald Dahl’s The Bfg, amidst a plethora of other projects, including Robopocalypse (which has gone back to the rewrite chamber) This unnamed cold war thriller is based on a true story, following the tale of James Donovan an American lawyer who was enlisted by the CIA and negotiate the release of a U-2 spy plane bomber pilot that was shot down over Russia. The movie will see Tom Hanks reteam with Spielberg again (they previously worked on Saving Private Ryan,...

Directly on heals of the U.N.’s more news is not good news announcement, producer Lawrence Bender told THR that a sequel to An Inconvenient Truth might be in the works. The fabulous powerpoint presentation from the non-vegan Al Gore (a full seven years after the doc, the former vice-president has finally converted to Bill Clinton’s ecologically sound diet), was a bankable hit but felt incredibly dated before it’s theatrical release.
Gist: The 2006 film brought together the science of global warming with Mr. Gore’s personal history and lifelong commitment to reversing the effects of global climate change. Fast-forward almost a decade later, the sequel would look at the taxing energy sources and campaigns but into place to spread misinformation.
Worth Noting: Al Gore is not the only “film” person in the family. His daughter is a solid scribe who worked on Spike Jonze’s Her and Mark Jackson’s War Story.

I’m flying solo again for this installment of Panel Discussion, taking a look at one of my most-anticipated mini-series in years, Revolutionary War, as well as a couple of new Titan Comics releases – Batman: Arkham #2 and Arrow #3; as well as the independent Irish sci-fi comic Leap.
Revolutionary War is split into a number of different one-shot issues, which tell the over-arching story from a number of perspectives, building into one big-picture of the return of the Marvel UK villains Mys-Tech. Yes, I did say Marvel UK. For those that haven’t been following the announcements regarding this series, Revolutionary War brings back the classic UK-created characters from the 80s and 90s (a number of which were in Marvel’s superb mini-series, Captain Britain and Mi-13) and pits them against their long-time foes – all with a little help from Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.

Visit Films will present the world premiere of Carlos Marques-Marcet’s first feature Long Distance (formerly 10,000Km) at SXSW.
Visit holds worldwide rights excluding Spain. Natalia Tena and David Verdaguer star as a happy Barcelona couple whose relationship is plunged into turmoil when an opportunity takes one of them far away.
Barcelona native Marques-Marcet has directed two award-winning shorts and a feature documentary and has edited several features including It Felt Like Love. He is a recipient of the La Caixa scholarship and is a graduate of the UCLA School Of Theater, Film And Television Mfa programme.
Visit director of acquisitions Aida LiPera negotiated the deal with the filmmakers and said, “We’re really excited to be working on Long Distance as it is sure to introduce Carlos Marques-Marcet as an emerging voice in Spanish cinema.

The Ardor
Director: Pablo Fendrik
Writer(s): Pablo Fendrik
Producers: Juan Pablo Gugliotta, Nathalia Videla Peña, Gael García Bernal
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Gael García Bernal, Alice Braga
In terms of visibility and breaking out, we’re betting that Pablo Fendrik’s third feature film (debut in the English language) will raise his profile much like Miss Bala did for Gerardo Naranjo. The auteur Argentinian filmmaker who paired with actor Arturo Goetz on distinctly antagonistic items such as The Mugger (2007) and Blood Appears (2008) has been cooking up this environmental-thriller for a while now.
Gist: Gael Garcia Bernal portrays a mysterious man who emerges from the Argentinean rainforest to rescue the kidnapped daughter (Alice Braga) of a poor farmer after mercenaries murder her father and take over his property.

Thanks to everyone who commented on or read our Sundance coverage! We braved Park City's confounding bus system for you, you know. (If you appreciated it why not like us on Facebook and follow Michael and Glenn and I on twitter?) I had attended Sundance twice before. Once before I was a writer during college and once officially as press in 2010 when the highlight was dancing with Parker Posey at a party! But this felt like a first time again, mostly because I brought a team so we did it up right. Well, mostly right. 75% right. We definitely didn't attend enough parties but there's always next year if -- no, I can't even think about leaving NYC again any time soon. I've woken up in my own cozy bed the past few mornings for the first time in two weeks (a quick La trip was before Sundance, remember) and it feels great.

Over the course of the last month or so, it has been interesting to read different opinions about what would (or should) premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. From those articles, I culled a list of films that I really wanted to see on the Sundance program slate for 2014. Surprisingly, almost all of the films on my personal list will be screening at Sundance, including Joe Swanberg's Happy Christmas, Kat Candler's Hellion, the Zellner Brothers' Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, Jeffrey Radice's No No: A Dockumentary / U.S.A., Andrew Droz Palermo and Tracy Droz Tragos' Rich Hill, Stuart Murdoch's God Help the Girl, Tessa Louise-Salomé's Mr leos caraX, Madeleine Olnek's The Foxy Merkins, Ana Lily Amirpour's A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Martha Stephens and Aaron Katz's Land Ho!, Alex Ross Perry's Listen Up Philip, Michael Tully's Ping Pong Summer,...

The elusive “Golden Ticket”. Beginning next Wednesday (December 4th) in a wave of four announcements, is when the official word comes out. Plenty of filmmakers are already in the know, but some will find out over the course of this Thanksgiving weekend. Having covered the festival and fest circuit for some time now, we’re already aware that worthy films that were indeed submitted will be excluded from the ’14 edition. Thousands of filmmakers won’t get the phone call, and while it can bruise dreams, this is not a rejection of quality…but rather, a preference from a programmer/programming team which reflects a larger mandate. John Cooper, Trevor Groth et al. have a difficult job and the way I see it, it’s the equivalent to draft day for a major professional sport – where a team in a given turn doesn’t go for the consensus pick, but instead...

When last we visited Clark Kent and Lana Lang, they were at college, leaving Smallville behind and as Season Three of the syndicated series arrived, it came with changes. The first was that Superboy became The Adventures of Superboy and then the focus moved the characters from the well-named Shuster University to a quasi-internship at The Bureau for Extra-Normal Matters in Capitol City, Florida. Clearly, the actors were aging and the premise of them being in college stopped making sense, plus menace of the week stories was becoming tougher to make plausible on the static campus. The more plausible setting worked for super-heroes but certainly took something away from the civilian side of life, a similar issue plaguing Smallville in its latter seasons.

Award-winning journalist Michael Hastings dies in a single-car accident in Los Angeles Tuesday morning (June 18). Hasting's was best-known for a profile he penned in 2010 that led to the resignation of General Stanley McChrystal, the man in charge of the Us-led war effort in Afghanistan.
Hasting's death was first reported by Buzzfeed and Rolling Stone, two of the many outlets he contributed to. He was also an accomplished author, with three books to his credit. The first, "I Lost My Love in Baghdad: A Modern War Story," tells the story of his fiancee's death in Iraq, while he was stationed there as a reporter for Newsweek.
Those who worked with Michael speak of his true talent to get at the heart of a story, from his profile of McChrystal to an inflammatory email exchange with a spokesman for Hillary Clinton. Though he may come across less than flattering in the exchange,...

Seeing as it’s been some 13 years since Tim Robbins helmed a feature — it’d be interesting to know how many younger people even knew he had a brief career in the field — something special must be contained within City of Lies. According to THR, the actor will get his fourth feature down with Endgame’s adaptation of the Arthur Phillips-penned Cold War story, which has been scripted by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (Captain America, Pain and Gain).
The short appeared on a 2007 episode of This American Life, leading host Ira Glass, along with Alissa Shipp, to find himself attached as a producer since 2009. (Philip Noyce was the last signed helmer, in case that means anything to you.) In it, a younger member of the CIA finds himself romantically entangled with a Czech agent — and things can only get knotty from there.

Kevin' just said Avengers 3 might be a good movie for the Civil War story line— Assemble Live (@AssembleLive) April 20, 2012 A while back, the Captain America screenwriters teased that they would have a relationship with Howard Stark and Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger so that if there was ever a movie based on the Civil War story line Cap could turn to Tony and say "I knew your father." Now we have words from the mastermind behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe which at least acknowledges that Civil War is definitely on the table in terms of being adapted into a feature film. Feige also offered this update on Luke Cage and Black Panther. Looks like the two secret movies Marvel is working on won't be either of these guys. Feige also updates a few other characters and topics--- Kevin's been asked about Luke Cage and Black...

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently offered an update on the long-awaited Edgar Wright scripted film adaptation of Marvel's Ant-Man. During the conference he said that the movie was closest its ever been to being made. It's crazy to think the the movie has been in active development for over five years.
It’s somewhere. I’ll just say it’s closer than it’s ever been in its long maybe eight year history, and I usually e-mail Edgar every two or three days and over those eight years its got further away and closer… we are now closer than we’ve ever been. So I hope it will come together shortly.
The movie's eventually going to happen, it's only a matter of time before it does. I just hope after all of this time in preparing and waiting for it, it turns out to be the awesome movie we are all hoping for.

A few days ago, Sound on Sight’s Michael Ryan posted “Why Kathryn Bigelow Should Direct Captain America 2” (Sos 3/2/12). In a wonderfully deft essay (take a bow, Michael), he parsed the comic book history of the Captain America character and saw, in the superhero’s 1960s resurrection, some of the same themes of dislocation, psychological trauma, and alienation which course through Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar-winning Iraq War story, The Hurt Locker (2008). But among the comments the piece elicited was this one from “Anonymous”: “No No she needs to stay away from this movie (sic).”
Michael requested Anonymous to expand on that sentiment, and I, rather presumptuously, jumped in since I suspected I initially shared Anonymous’ reaction: that Oscar-winning directors of heavyweight material like The Hurt Locker don’t make comic book movies.
But then I kept mulling over Michael’s piece. I suppose a certain literary strata might snicker...

Angelina Jolie has revealed that she had a "meltdown" prior to shooting her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey. The star said during a Marie Claire video chat on Thursday (January 12) that the pressure of making the movie took a toll on her emotions. "I had a complete emotional breakdown in the shower and Brad [Pitt] found me crying... I felt this huge responsibility and I felt very small. 'Who am I to take this on?'" she admitted. Jolie also reiterated that she doesn't consider herself a director and only took on In the Land of Blood and Honey because she felt an intense connection to the Bosnian War story. "I didn't plan to become a director, and I still have trouble saying (more)...
