Prior to directing "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" in 1989, Jeremiah S. Chechik had overseen many, many TV commercials, as well as the music videos for Van Halen's "When It's Love" and Hall & Oates' "Downtown Life." Chechik knew the commercial world well, having begun his career as a fashion photographer for Vogue, and having worked as a designer. After "Christmas Vacation," his career flourished, and he turned out many notable, high-profile films like "Benny & Joon," "Tall Tale: The Unbelievable Adventures of Pecos Bill," the English-language remake of "Diabolique," and the sexy film adaptation of "The Avengers." After that, he moved mostly into TV, and has directed dozens of episodes of many, many acclaimed shows.
His movement from music videos into feature films, however, began in an unlikely way, and Chechik credits his big break on a flippant, sarcastic comment made by master director Stanley Kubrick. It seems that Kubrick, when...

It’s been four decades since Samantha Baker bemoaned the fact that everyone had forgotten her 16th birthday amid the chaos caused by her wacky sister’s impending nuptials. On May 4, 1984, “Sixteen Candles” was released, the success of which prompted a string of hits by filmmaker John Hughes, launched the careers of several performers and inspired the glory years of teen movies in the 1980s. Read on for more about the “Sixteen Candles” 40th anniversary.
After the success of two movies based on screenplays he had written, “Mr. Mom” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983), Hughes was given the opportunity to direct one of his scripts. Up to this point, “teen movies” had largely evolved from cautionary “rebellion” films in the 1950s to the beach party films of the 1960s to slasher films of the 1970s to sex comedies in the early 1980s. Tommy Wirkola‘s action-thriller Violent Night is getting a sequel, we learned last year, but what’s the latest on that project? Is it still happening or has it fallen by the wayside?
Chatting with Collider at SXSW last week, Violent Night producer Kelly McCormick promised that Violent Night 2 is definitely still happening, and might be filming next year.
“We are planning on returns to those universes,” McCormick responded when the outlet asked for updates on sequels to both Nobody and the Christmas movie Violent Night.
McCormick teased, “Hopefully, honestly, even potentially end of this year for Nobody 2 and, beginning of next year for Violent Night 2, if we can find time in everybody’s busy schedules.
“But the development’s going super well and everybody’s really, really excited about moving those worlds forward.”
Last we heard, Pat Casey and Josh Miller will be back to write Violent Night...

Following its Dec. 19 premiere, Disney’s “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” series officially cracked Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart during the Dec. 18-24 viewing window, landing at No. 4 on the Originals list with 572 million minutes viewed.
Disney released only the first two 40-minute episodes of the new series during this interval, meaning “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” had just 80 available minutes for viewing in comparison to “Reacher” (520), “The Crown “(3,424), and “My Life with the Walter Boys” (446). Nielsen counts minutes viewed across all episodes of a series in its Top 10 ranker.
Also making its debut on the Originals chart is Peacock’s “Dr. Death.” The series opened at No. 8 on the list with 302 million minutes viewed across all 16 episodes. Peacock released all eight episodes of the second season of “Dr. Death” on Thursday of this interval. According to Nielsen, the audience behind “Dr. Death” skewed a bit older with 1/3 of them...

The streaming gods have smiled on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
The Disney+ series based on author Rick Riordan’s best-selling books opened to a good-sized audience in the week before Christmas. The first two episodes, which debuted the evening of Dec. 19, drew about 572 million minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. With a combined run time of 80 minutes, that works out to about 7.15 million complete runs (or “views” as currently defined by much of the industry) of the two episodes in the United States.
Disney had earlier said that the first episode had earned 13.3 million views worldwide — equivalent to a little more than 505 million minutes — over its first six days. The Nielsen figures for the premiere put Percy Jackson ahead of Disney+’s last two Marvel premieres, Secret Invasion (461 million minutes) and season two of Loki (446 million), in total viewing time.
Prime Video’s Reacher moved up to the overall No.

You’ve heard of the beach that makes you old, but what about the pool that bores you to tears? Part “Old,” part “Lady of the Lake,” and weirdly just the baseball bits of “Signs,” this sluggish supernatural release from Blumhouse and Atomic Monster (the studios’ first new title following their recent merger) feels like the latest disasterpiece from a latter-day M. Night Shyamalan — but it’s not. That’s bad news for writer/director Bryce McGuire, who has neither the genre bonafides nor the creative depravity required to justify making his debut feature an accidental horror comedy about a haunted swimming pool and the idiot suburbanites who maintain it so, so slowly.
Expanding on his 2014 short film of the same name, which was co-directed with Rod Blackhurst, McGuire burns through nearly all of his good ideas for an extended “Night Swim” before the title card even pops. In the original three-minute version,...

It's time to rent a Family Truckster, cue up Lindsey Buckingham's "Holiday Road," and hope our wife doesn't catch us checking out a mysterious hot babe in a sports car -- because it's time to rank all of the films in the "Vacation" franchise. Part family drama, part romantic comedy, part slapstick showcase, and 100 percent a showcase for Chevy Chase to prove why he's Chevy Chase and we're not, National Lampoon's "Vacation" series is home to some of the best bits in American comedy cinema.
Whether they're staying at home for the holidays, pressing their luck in Vegas, traveling cross country, or flying overseas, the Griswolds have set the bar hellishly low for family vacations (which means the only place to go is up for the rest of us). Sure, some of the jokes have seen better days, but the longevity of the series lies with the relatable family...

In December 1989, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation opened at the box office. A bit less than a year later, Home Alone premiered. The two classic Christmas movies have a fair bit in common, including where they are set and who wrote them. John Hughes is responsible for penning both flicks. Did you know that Chris Colombus, the director of Home Alone, was originally attached to National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, though? Over the years, some fans have theorized that Colombus directed Home Alone out of spite when he felt forced to quit National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation because of Chevy Chase. That might not be the case, but there are a couple of elements of Home Alone that you could argue were digs at Chase’s character, Clark Griswold.

Chris Colombus was set to direct National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation in 1989. He was excited about the project.

If you like movies about empty-headed dips and their resentful families, then National Lampoon's "Vacation" movies certainly have you covered. Clark Griswold, played by Chevy Chase, is an exemplar -- perhaps the Ur-example -- of a clueless dad obsessed with fulfilling the typical American suburban dream despite a general lack of wit or competence. Clark claims to be an expert in everything, assuring his family that everything will be fine, and yet he displays no acumen or skill, and his family repeatedly witnesses him fail. We sympathize with Clark, however, as many of his failings are the result of bad luck; Clark isn't very good at traversing the daily onus of trivial nonsense, but the world seems cosmically hellbent on punishing him for his incompetence.

“Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” was the 1992 sequel to “Home Alone.” The movie starred Macaulay Culkin in his star-making role as Kevin McCallister. The sequel also featured a cameo from Donald Trump, then the owner of New York’s Plaza Hotel. Chris Columbus, who directed both movies, told Business Insider that Trump forced his way into the movie, which wasn’t standard at the time.
Columbus said that Trump’s appearance was required so that the team could shoot in the hotel. He explained, “We wanted to shoot in the lobby. We couldn’t rebuild The Plaza on a soundstage.”
Typically, a production team could pay a fee to use a physical location, but Trump wanted more than just money. “We paid the fee, but he also said, ‘The only way you can use the Plaza is if I’m in the movie,'” Columbus continued. “So we...

Social media users recently marveled that last month marked 20 years since three modern Christmas favorites — New Line’s Elf, Universal’s Love Actually and Miramax’s Bad Santa — all hit theaters within weeks of each other. Two decades later, you don’t need to feel like a cotton-headed ninny-muggins if you’re among those wondering why studios don’t release holiday theatrical offerings in the way they once did.
Although most Christmas films don’t tend to follow the path of, say, 1990’s Home Alone, which topped the domestic box office for a whopping 12 straight weeks, they had typically been a staple of the release calendar, with a handful of titles hitting theaters annually, as recently as the late 2010s. That list includes such 2016 theatrical offerings as Almost Christmas, Bad Santa 2, Office Christmas Party and Why Him?, followed by 2017’s Daddy’s Home 2, A Bad Moms Christmas and animated...

You know what they say about Old Man Marley, the South Bend Shovel Slayer? Back in ’58, he murdered his whole family and half the people on a suburban Chicago block with a snow shovel. He’s been hiding out there ever since, disguising the remains of his misdeeds by turning victims to mummies, and using the dust off their bones to salt our streets.
That’s what the kids in the McCallister house tell each other every cold December night when the lonely stranger played by Roberts Blossom appears outside their window. It’s of course a lie, but the truth was originally a lot more enigmatic in the early drafts of the Home Alone screenplay penned by John Hughes, who was a maestro of family and youth entertainment during the 1980s and early ‘90s.
At its inception, Home Alone was both a departure and a return to the well for Hughes.

With Christmas just one week (and one day) away, we wanted to ask you, the people, what your favorite Christmas Movie is? National Lampoon's "Christmas Vacation" is a seminal classic enjoyed by families all across the globe for over three decades. Patriarch Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) just wants his family's holidays to go off without a hitch, but the universe consistently has other plans for the Griswold family. Cousin Catherine (Miriam Flynn), her wild husband Eddie (Randy Quaid), and their family show up unannounced, the cat gets electrocuted, the turkey is ruined, a squirrel hides out in the too-big Christmas tree, the festive light display causes a citywide power outage, and the tree eventually catches fire. Everything that could go wrong on Christmas goes horrifically, laughably, wrong ... but at least Clark can look forward to his annual Christmas bonus to arrive. He spends the majority of the film looking toward this bonus as the last beacon of hope as he drowns in holiday hijinks.
Alas, when the bonus arrives, it's not what Clark had imagined at all.

The star of one of the most iconic Christmas films of all time has waded into one of the holiday season’s most divisive annual debates: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?
Peter Billingsley says yes — and in the season finale episode of his A Cinematic Christmas Journey podcast, which releases Dec. 15, he does his best to convince Die Hard cinematographer Jan de Bont.
“I mean, they didn’t think Die Hard was a Christmas movie. They happened to set it then, but the filmmakers weren’t intending that,” Billingsley explains. Instead, like many classics over the decades, its meaning to fans evolved. “This movie creates its own life, is in the culture and, over time, people discover it. It’s pretty great to see how that life can move in ways that the filmmakers never intended, or even ever imagined.” (Watch an exclusive clip from the episode below.)

Amongst the four installments in the National Lampoon’s Vacation series, Christmas Vacation stands out as the most iconic, thanks to its enduring appeal over the festive period. However, in true Griswold fashion, Clark’s hopes for a peaceful holiday are quickly shattered as he discovers that even within the confines of his warm and cozy family home, chaos and hilarity can still arise. The Christmas genre in movies began its journey with timeless classics like It’s a Wonderful Life, evoking sentimental and heartwarming tales that captured the true spirit of the holiday season. These films portrayed the magic of Christmas while reinforcing themes of love, family, and self-discovery. However, as time progressed, the genre took a turn towards slapstick humor and outrageous antics, exemplified by the iconic films Home Alone and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. These films provided a perfect blend of laughter and chaos, offering a more lighthearted approach to Christmas. Yet, beyond the mainstream appeal, another sub-genre emerged – Christmas horror...

The movie is a family-friendlier entry for the Vacation series that brought John Hughes back to combine his famous Griswold tribe with his penchant for holiday films.
According to People, Christmas Con 2023 has recently jingled its way to Edison, New Jersey. This year, Chevy Chase headlined a reunion with his co-stars from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. The Clark Griswold actor joined his on-screen wife, Beverly D’Angelo, Cousin Eddie actor Randy Quaid and Miriam Flynn, who portrayed Eddie’s wife in the three Vacation films in which they appeared.

Adam Bold, the self-made millionaire and majority owner of talent representation firm A3 Artists Agency, has been hit with a lawsuit from his partners accusing him of sexual misconduct and running the company into the ground.
In court papers filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, agency CEO Robert Atterman and president Brian Cho accused Bold of plunging the company into financial chaos with overspending, squeezing out leadership in a proposed sale of parts of A3 to rival agency Gersh, and developing a reputation as “office creep” and “sex pest” to nearly 200 employees.
“In an astonishing run of terror, Bold has squandered everything,” the filing reads. “A3 is in a state of chaos and dissolution as its agents jump off the sinking ship and flee to A3 competitors, or wait in shock and fear for the next shoe to drop.”

Yippee-Ki-Yay, Moviegoers! Die Hard will be back in theaters next week, just in time for Christmas. But it’s not a Christmas movie…is it? It’s debated year after year: does the 1988 action flick qualify as a holiday film or not? According to many, yes. The holiday is even mentioned in AMC’s write-up: “A New York City cop faces overwhelming odds when his Christmas visit to California is interrupted by a hostile invasion of his estranged wife’s office building.”
On the topic, we made our own case a few years ago that Die Hard is in fact a Christmas movie. Personally, I can’t take that stance. Die Hard qualifies as “Christmas-adjacent”, like Lethal Weapon, In Bruges and Eyes Wide Shut. Christmas is part of the films in one way or another – typically being set during the holiday season – but it’s not a big enough part...

Believe it or not, Eddie Murphy never has attempted to dive into the holiday movie genre in his 40-year-plus career in films, but with Candy Cane Lane he has found an ideal premise to add to his ever-growing filmography of family-friendly comedies along the lines of Daddy Day Care, Dr. Dolittle, and countless others.
He reunites after 30 years with his Boomerang director Reginald Hudlin, along with screenwriter Kelly Younger. The latter came up with the idea based on his own experiences growing up in El Segundo, CA, and spending time every Christmas on the real Candy Cane Lane, a local event created in 1949 showcasing a neighborhood that dazzles with its decorations, with each family trying to outdo the other in spectacular holiday fashion.
It wasn’t much of a leap to invent an all-out special effects-driven action comedy fantasy around the setting, and that is exactly what they done. And...

The owner may be a real Grinch, but Max has some pretty magical presents to offer subscribers this holiday season.
Every year sees new Christmas movies pumped out to meet the insatiable demand of the Yuletide-obsessed. But the holidays are more often a time when people revisit the classics from their childhood or someone else’s, and it’s no surprise that Max and its deep film library — thanks to Warner Bros. Discovery’s Turner Classic Movie collection — has pound for pound the most seasonal mainstays of any streamer.
The riches of the platform include Golden Age of Hollywood favorites like “The Shop Around the Corner.” Lesser known than James Stewart ‘s other Christmas movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” the Budapest-set film about two warring coworkers who fall in love as pen pals is a real holiday treat with gorgeous, spiky chemistry between Stewart and his costar Margaret Sullavan. On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Who Knows Why We Make the Memories We Do?
IMDb search results and the monolithic “critical consensus” can tell you what supposedly should come to mind when any given actor comes up in conversation. But every cinephile knows that for whatever reason performers become permanently linked to specific roles in our minds. It’s an indelible, personal assignment that can be sentimentally meaningful (Robin Williams will always be the “Aladdin” Genie in Disney adults’ hearts) — or inexplicable and circumstantial.

The Norwegian holiday horror movie There’s Something in the Barn just reached theatres last week – but if you can’t catch it on the big screen, you’ll still have a chance to watch it at home this holiday season. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will be giving There’s Something in the Barn a digital release on December 5th! To help you decide whether or not this is a movie you’d like to check out, we have the trailer embedded above.
Directed by Magnus Martens from a screenplay written by Aleksander Kirkwood Brown, There’s Something in the Barn is described as being “an ambitious artistic bridge between American classics and Norwegian mythology” that is like “Gremlins meets Home Alone meets National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation“. The story follows a typical American family who inherits a farm in the Norwegian mountains and crosses paths with a tricky creature from Nordic folklore, the Barn Elf.

It’s not just about those repeats of A Christmas Story on TNT anymore.
Multiple linear channels and streamers are getting into the holiday spirit this month and next by dropping original Christmas movies, as well as old favorites and one-off holiday specials. As usual, Hallmark has wall-to-wall flicks planned until the end of the month, but Great American Family, Lifetime and BET have their own original slates as well to help ring in the new year.
And if the classics are all that you are looking for, there are still airings of It’s a Wonderful Life, Elf, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Home Alone, The Santa Cause, The Wizard of Oz and Miracle on 34th Street scheduled for the boomers and Gen Xers.
And yes, on the big days, several channels have do have marathon programming events.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. In October, horror fans like to hunker down and get cozy with their favorite spooky pieces of cinema. Then, as soon as November hits, it's time to start busting out the Christmas movies. But there are a few flicks out there that actually qualify as both Halloween and Christmas movies. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is one of the best examples that works for the whole family, with slashers like "Black Christmas" and "Silent Night, Deadly Night" working for more mature viewers. But when it comes to a nice gateway movie that perfectly blends holiday cheer, mischievous monsters, and dark comedy, you can't do any better than "Gremlins."
As we wrap up Halloween and head into the holiday season, Bottleneck Gallery is giving is a nice treat that doubles as an early Christmas gift in the form of a new "Gremlins" poster created by Dkng, one of our favorite pop culture artists.

Known for his smug, bemused sense of humor, Chevy Chase became famous for a series of highly profitable comedies. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in New York in 1943, Chase turned to comedy after a series of odd jobs. After a short stint with the “National Lampoon,” he shot to stardom in 1975 as one of the original Not Ready for Primetime Players on “Saturday Night Live.” In its first season, Chase became famous both for his pratfalls and his Gerald Ford impersonation. He was also the initial host of “Weekend Update,” starting each week with the catchphrase, “I’m Chevy Chase, and you’re not.”
After winning Emmys for writing and performing in 1976, Chase left “SNL” after one year to pursue a movie career (he was replaced by Bill Murray). He earned Golden Globe nominations as Best Comedy/Musical Actor...

Eddie Marks, a member of the costume department on such films as The Breakfast Club, The Witches of Eastwick and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and the president of the Western Costume Company since 1992, has died. He was 76.
Marks died Monday of natural causes during a visit to Prague, a spokesman for the company told The Hollywood Reporter.
Marks joined Western Costume in 1989 as a vice president and became president three years later. He helped steer the company from a cramped Melrose Avenue warehouse near the Paramount lot to a hangar-sized building on Vanowen Street in North Hollywood in 1990.
Western Costume was founded sometime between 1912 and 1915 and has been among the world’s largest suppliers of costumes ever since. “What makes us stand out from our competitors is that, over the last 30 years, I’ve bought 11 companies that were costume rental companies,” Marks told THR in a 2019 profile of Western Costume.
