When Saturday Night Live began, it wasn’t even called Saturday Night Live. That honor belonged to a rival variety show hosted by Howard Cosell that launched the same year on ABC primetime. Hence why the young, hungry, and immensely talented sketch comedians assembled in 1975 were dubbed the “Not Ready for Primetime Players.”
That earliest and now quasi-mythical first class of SNL alumni remain the only ones to hold that title. Perhaps this is because the joke stopped working after many of them proved more than capable of carrying a primetime television series. In fact, most of them went on to have successful careers on TV, the Broadway stage, and for the precious and most spectacular few… in the movies.
Ever since Chevy Chase exited SNL after its first season, the series has been viewed—sometimes to creator and producer Lorne Michaels and NBC executives’ consternation—as a launchpad for movie stardom.

After their 2014 collaboration, The Simpsons and Family Guy reunited once again in a surprising move, for a mini crossover short for Disney+. Two of animation’s most beloved families came together for a side-splitting encounter that has left fans of both shows craving for more.
A still from The Simpsons
In the new Disney+ special, The Simpsons: May The 12th Be With You, the Simpsons family celebrated Star Wars in an unorthodox way, in which the Family Guy members arrive in Springfield. The unexpected crossover left viewers surprised; but more than anything, the episode’s cheeky dig at Disney is what stunned fans the most.

With the appetite of a hungry grizzly, “The Bear” could gobble up a few Emmy records for its sophomore season. Fresh off a smashing first season that set a new benchmark for comedy series wins with 10 trophies, FX’s awards-gobbling show shows no signs of letting up. Its second season, which aired in June 2023, is eyeing three more records to own: most acting nominations for a series in a single year, most nods for a comedy, and most nominated episode in history with its sixth installment, “Fishes.”
“Fishes” dishes out a heated Christmas dinner flashback of the Berzatto family, positioning itself as the series’ pièce de résistance thus far — imagine the “Succession/Connor’s Wedding” version of family dinners, only with more food spills. Directed by Christopher Storer, who also co-wrote the episode with Joanna Calo, “Fishes” seems the obvious pick for Emmy nods in both directing and writing categories.

This week Fox News received its marching orders from its favorite viewer: Donald Trump. As the former president attempts to soften his platform on abortion rights — claiming on Monday that he now supports states setting their own laws despite recently floating a national ban — the network is lauding the purported shift away from support for a national ban as the “right” move for Republicans battling post-Roe electoral backlash.
On Tuesday, the Arizona Supreme Court revived an 1864 law that will place a near-total ban on abortion in the state, and...

The 2024 U.S. presidential election could be one of the most consequential in the country’s history. Ahead of November’s critical vote, news providers are shoring up their content slates and making sure they can reach as large an audience as possible with information they need to know. CBS News is already one of the most trusted names in the business, and Variety reports that it is supplementing its coverage by adding a new streaming news show that covers all of a day’s most important story with a whip-around style.

CBS News is ready to launch a new salvo in TV’s streaming wars.
With many of its rivals bolstering their streaming offerings in recent months, CBS News plans to broaden its efforts by debuting a new signature “whip-around” live-streamed program, “CBS News 24/7” that will rely on journalists both from the national news outlet as well as from CBS local stations — and serve as the new name of the broadband outlet. CBS will also expand current streaming programs led by anchor John Dickerson and the CBS News Washington bureau and launch a 1 a.m. program called “CBS News Roundup” for late-night viewing.
“CBS News 24/7 is a decidedly ambitious evolution of our streaming efforts,” said Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of a unit that comprises CBS News, local stations and syndication, in a statement. “Data backs up our bet on a fresh, timely, and distinctive approach to breaking news and live coverage.

Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is taking this Emmy race seriously.
With stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine leading the charge, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which draws inspiration from the 2005 movie featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is set to compete in the drama categories at this year’s awards ceremony.
Crafted by Glover and Francesca Sloane, the show’s debut season stretches across eight episodes, centering on John and Jane Smith, secret agents who pose as a married couple while working for a shadowy corporation. Its blend of comedy and drama offered the potential to categorize it in either genre for awards consideration.

Fox News topped its rivals in the March and first-quarter 2024 ratings by a wide margin, but MSNBC and CNN showed the biggest growth versus the same period a year ago.
The past month saw major events like Super Tuesday and President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address. Although the numbers aren’t giving the networks the blockbuster audiences of the 2020 cycle, the networks have for now staved off the large double-digit declines of recent years.
In primetime in March, Fox News averaged 2.14 million viewers, up 2% from the same period a year ago. MSNBC posted 1.31 million, up 15%, and CNN averaged 601,000, up 27%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 246,000, up less than 1% over 2023, while MSNBC averaged 133,000, up 24%, and CNN was at 124,000, up 24%.
In total day in March, Fox News topped with 1.31 million, down less than 1%, while MSNBC posted 830,000, up 18%, and CNN averaged 461,000, up 8%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News led...

Parting is such sweet sorrow, particularly when it comes to Emmy voters. In recent years, the TV academy has given goodbye hugs to four Best Drama Series contenders for their final seasons: “Succession” (2023), “Game of Thrones” (2019), “Breaking Bad” (2014) and “The Sopranos” (2007). The only other dramas to land on this farewell list all hail from many decades ago: “Upstairs, Downstairs” (1977), “Elizabeth R” (1972), “The Bold Ones: The Senator” (1971) and “Playhouse 90” (1960). Will “The Crown” now become the ninth such program at the upcoming 2024 Emmys?
According to Gold Derby’s early Emmy odds, “The Crown” is way out front to win Best Drama Series for its sixth and final season. Rounding out the likely Top 8 nominees are “The Morning Show,” “The Gilded Age,” “Slow Horses,” “Loki,” “3 Body Problem,” “The Curse” and “Sugar.” Netflix notably split up the last episodes of “The Crown” into two parts — the first part streamed November 16 and dealt...

Fox News again topped the February ratings, while MSNBC saw double digit growth in total day and primetime.
The networks have had a mixed ratings picture so far during the election year, a time that has typically seen a large viewer uptick. But the dominance of Donald Trump and Joe Biden in the race for their parties’ nominations has likely had an impact, more than anything, on viewer interest, with much less suspense on the outcome.
That said, MSNBC did show gains. In primetime, the network averaged 1.35 million viewers, up 15% from the same period a year earlier. Fox News was still well ahead of its rivals with an average of 2.07 million, but that was down 9%. CNN posted 573,000, down 2%.

The NBC sitcom "Night Court" was a satirical take on the zany and chaotic underworld of the midnight shift at the courthouse. With an unconventional, free-loving judge at the helm of this circus, there's no telling what might happen. The series was such a massive hit that it ran for nine whole seasons, featuring a cast of relatively unknown actors that, when assembled, formed one of the most acclaimed ensembles of all time. The show won eight Primetime Emmys and was nominated no less than 32 times. "Night Court" won in a variety of categories, but the actor that ended up taking home the most gold was John Larroquette, who played egotistical D.A. Dan Fielding.
A "Night Court" reboot landed on NBC in 2023. Sadly, few members of the original cast are still around to reprise their old roles, and the show is comprised almost entirely of new characters. Harry Anderson,...

Unlike most American soaps, Australia's Neighbours usually avoids back-from-the-dead stories.
Only two characters ever have gotten a miraculous resurrection (Harold Bishop and Dee Bliss), although many have returned as ghostly visitors.
But the soap itself is another story. Several months after its cancellation, Freevee on Amazon picked up Neighbours.
This means North American fans can access episodes online for the first time since 2014, when it was briefly streamed on Hulu.
Whether you're a new viewer curious about the series or a long-time fan relieved about the revival, you probably want to know what to expect. We've got all the news in this post; check for updates as the premiere date draws closer.

Tony Bennett has died at the age of 96.
The singer’s publicist, Sylvia Weiner, confirmed his death to The Associated Press on Friday morning, saying he died in his hometown of New York. There was no specific cause of death, but Bennett had been battling Alzheimer’s disease.
No one was more surprised by the duration and arc of Bennett’s career than Bennett himself.
“I can’t tell you how fortunate I feel about all this,” Bennett said during a 2006 interview, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. “I never really thought I’d be doing it this long… and it’s so much more than I ever imagined it would be. So I’m just thrilled.”
Bennett went out on a high note, too. Having been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, he kept working as able, bringing his performing career to a close with duet partner Lady Gaga...

Jesse Watters’ debut as the permanent occupant of Fox News’ 8 p.m. hour gave the network a boost in the timeslot, versus the series of replacement hosts who have filled the time period since the cancellation of Tucker Carlson’s show.
Jesse Watters Primetime averaged 2.47 million viewers during the hour. That compares to the 1.66 million that Fox News Tonight averaged in June.
Still, Watters’ audience was less than the 3.1 million viewers that Carlson averaged in the time period last July. The network is obviously aiming for Watters’ audience to grow, as Carlson’s did after he replaced Bill O’Reilly in 2017.
Watters on Monday beat cable news rivals, including an MSNBC Joe Scarborough special, which averaged 1.29 million, and CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, which averaged 686,000.
In the adults 25-54 demo, Watters averaged 161,000 viewers, compared to 139,000 for MSNBC’s Scarborough and 120,000 for CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360.

The Television Academy and Fox, which is carrying this year’s ceremony, have been discussing contingencies amid a writers strike which is in its 51st day. Writers play a key part of the Emmy ceremony, and the show also requires a production lead time, so the consensus is that, if there is no resolution to the work stoppage in sight by end of July or early August, the Emmys, currently scheduled for Sept. 18, will have to be postponed.
That is real possibility as AMPTP is still negotiating with SAG-AFTRA, with talks looking to go down to the wire on the Jun 30 deadline and maybe beyond if negotiations are extended as rumored.

When is one of the most decorated and generally beloved actresses of all time an awards dark horse? Perhaps when her latest hope for recognition is as part of possibly the greatest Emmys dark horse of all time.
In the upcoming months, expect to hear a lot about Better Call Saul and the statistical aberration that has placed the exceptional AMC drama sufficiently on the Emmy radar to receive 46 nominations and yet zero wins.
For a while, it looked like the solution to this bizarre drought was going to be Carol Burnett. With six Primetime Emmy wins to her credit and in a year in which a 90th birthday tribute to the iconic star is likely to compete for Emmys of its own, Burnett seemed to be lined up for an easy nomination and probable win for her pivotal turn as Marion in the second half of the sixth season of Better Call Saul.

According to Deadline — which reported the demise of Money Court — CNBC is “moving out of original, primetime entertainment programming.” As another part of that shift, CNBC execs Denise Contis and Timothy Kuryak will exit the network, along with marketing execs and other higher-ups at the network. Contis was executive vice president and head of content for CNBC Primetime, while Kuryak was executive producer at CNBC Prime. Now CNBC will fill in the gaps in its schedule with repeats of Shark Tank, Undercover Boss, American Greed, and other shows, Deadline adds. Dexter’s Michael C. Hall looks chilling in the key art for Showtime’s upcoming revival Dexter: New Blood.
To celebrate the original series 15th anniversary on Friday, Showtime dropped two pieces of key art for Dexter’s next chapter, which is set to debut on November 7 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt.
Dexter, which aired for eight seasons on Showtime from 2006-13, centered on the mild-mannered Dexter Morgan (Hall). By day, Dexter worked as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police. By night, he was a serial killer—one who happened to target other murderers.
Set 10 years after Dexter went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, Dexter: New Blood finds the titular character living under an assumed name in the fictional small town of Iron Lake, New York. Dexter may be embracing his new life, but in the wake of unexpected events in this close-knit community, his Dark Passenger inevitably beckons.

There’s no doubting that 2017 has been a strong year for women both onscreen and behind the scenes. Take, for instance, the Primetime Emmys, which saw women dominate with big wins for Big Little Lies, The Handmaid’s Tale, Ava DuVernay, Master of None writer Lena Waithe and director Reed Morano.
On the film side, Sofia Coppola became the second woman ever to win the Cannes Film Festival prize for Best Director for The Beguiled, while Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, Lady Bird, is the best reviewed movie ever on Rotten Tomatoes. Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman earned over $800 million at the worldwide box office, far surpassing the recent wave of DC Comic films. Meanwhile, DuVernay finished production on Disney’s upcoming adaption of A Wrinkle in Time, becoming the first woman of color to helm a $100 million movie.

Geoffrey Rush is denying accusations of “inappropriate behavior” during his time with the Sydney Theatre Company (Stc).
“The moment I became aware of rumors of a complaint I immediately phoned and spoke to senior management at the Sydney Theatre Company asking for clarification about the details of the statement,” the Academy Award said in a statement.
“They refused to illuminate me with the details. I also asked why this information was being withheld, and why, according to standard theatre practice the issue had not been raised with me during the production via stage management, the director, my fellow actors or anyone at management level.
