This article contains massive spoilers for "Abigail."
Dancing ballet en Pointe is arguably one of the hardest styles of dance to perfect. It takes years of training and rigorous dedication to master the move, and even still, without the support of pointe shoes, the body alone is not enough to withstand the pressure of the weight of a full human on such a small surface area. Ballet en Pointe can be hell on the body — especially the feet — but when executed properly, it looks absolutely effortless. In "Abigail," the incredible new horror film from the creative collective known as Radio Silence, a group of criminals are tasked with kidnapping a small girl named Abigail and holding her for ransom only to discover that they've been set up, and Abigail is a vampire who has locked them in her mansion of horrors to "play with her food" before devouring them all.

A menu is a living thing at any Michelin-starred restaurant — a script at the mercy of seasons, ingredients, personnel, and more — and a Michelin-starred restaurant is only as good as its ability to harness the relentless churn known to all living things into creative energy. That’s true of eateries that have only been awarded one pathetic star, and it’s perhaps three times as true for the likes of Le Bois sans Feuilles, which opened in 2017 and continued a tradition of three-star ratings that began with the head chef’s father more than 30 years ago — a run that spans multiple centuries, locations, and generations.
By the time that Frederick Wiseman decided to make it the subject of his latest documentary, Le Bois sans Feuilles (lit. “The Forest without Leaves”) was so consistently drawing its power from the flow of change that it had already become the haute cuisine equivalent of a water wheel,...

After cutting two episodes helmed by Elisabeth Moss — including the actor’s directorial debut, “The Crossing” — in the fourth season of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Wendy Hallam Martin collaborated with the series star once again in the Hulu drama’s fifth installment. Of the four episodes the Emmy-winning editor cut this season, Moss directed three, including the opening two hours, “Morning” and “Ballet.” While Martin did her fair share of preparation ahead of the fifth season to ensure she could draw viewers back into the intense situation on which the fourth one had left off, it is Moss’ vision, she highlights, that ultimately set the tone for the premiere.
“[Moss] comes on and absolutely kills it and has a vision herself,” Martin tells Gold Derby during a recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). “I mean, I watch all my dailies, from top to bottom, and her vision is very apparent in her footage.

After earning an Emmy nom — her first — for her guest turn in the fourth season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2021, Mckenna Grace is now eligible again in Best Drama Guest Actress for the Hulu drama’s fifth installment. And if she’s shortlisted, she will continue one of the show’s longest-running streaks.
“Handmaid’s” has fielded at least one Best Drama Guest Actress nominee each time it was eligible in the category. Its streak began with Alexis Bledel, who was the show’s sole representative and prevailed for its debut season in 2017. The following year, it tripled its Season 1 total, producing nominations for Kelly Jenrette, Cherry Jones and the eventual champ, Samira Wiley, for its second season. Although the dystopian drama wasn’t eligible for a full season in 2019, it was allowed to enter the final three outings of Season 2 as orphaned episodes that year and thereby pocketed another...

Queen Elizabeth tried to prevent Princess Diana’s groundbreaking work with HIV/AIDS, according to a former employee of the Princess of Wales. Here’s how Diana raised awareness about the disease and how Prince Harry continued her work.

Diana, Princess of Wales, was known as “The People’s Princess” for many reasons, including her warm personality and ability to connect with the public. She also earned the title by working with many charities and raising awareness about HIV/AIDS.
In 1987, at the height of the AIDS epidemic, Diana opened the UK’s first HIV/AIDs unit at London Middlesex Hospital. Photographs from the event show her shaking hands with an HIV-positive man without gloves. At the time, many misbelieved that HIV was transmittable through touch. The...

Ballet has captivated audiences for centuries — there's something effortlessly elegant about it. In a surprise to no one, stories revolving around ballet make for intriguing movies. It's a world we know so little about — where there's always a mile to go, a bigger goal to accomplish.
In recent times, most films centered on ballerinas tend to include themes about achieving greatness while navigating jealousy in a cutthroat industry where attaining perfection isn't a need; it is a necessity. There's already an exciting take coming out in the form of the "John Wick" spin-off starring Ana de Armas, in which the actress plays a dancer-assassin who sets out to exact revenge for her family — and there's another, totally-unrelated, action-thriller flick also centered on ballerinas being helmed by Vicky Jewson (The Witcher: Blood Origin) from a script by Kate Freund.
It's called "Ballerina Overdrive" and it features one hell of a cast.

[This story contains spoilers from the two-episode premiere of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.]
A smirk and a growl.
Those were the dueling images The Handmaid’s Tale left for viewers when it returned.
The smirk came from Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski), with the once-reigning Gilead wife enjoying her winning moment when, during a global broadcast of her late husband’s funeral, she brings Hannah (Jordana Blake) into her televised appearance. And the growl came from June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), who was on the receiving end of that message, as she watched her pre-teen daughter being used as a pawn.
But the actresses who play the starring women on Hulu’s Emmy-winning dystopian series say those physical reactions are just the tip of the iceberg as the show begins its penultimate season.
“The June v. Serena concept is not going to be as simple as you may think,” Elisabeth Moss, who also directed the first two episodes,...

"All kids have the ability to be successful." Kandoo Films has debuted an official trailer for a documentary film titled Everybody Dance, which will be out to watch on VOD starting in October. This inspirational film showcases the power of dance and how it can inspire and change lives. It profiles a dance school and the teacher who runs a "Ballet For All Kids" course, focusing on teaching disabled children and allowing them to express themselves and build their confidence through ballet. This extremely touching film reveals the everyday lives of kids with different disabilities and how ballet has changed their lives. The film explores the lives of five kids, and their incredible dance teacher, as they prepare for an emotional end-of-year dance recital. This looks wonderful, the kind of feel-good story we need in this indifferent and harsh world right now. Even if it's not the best film ever,...

Warning: contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Episode 2
The Handmaid’s Tale is nothing if not balanced. Last episode, it showed the intoxicating bliss of taking revenge. This episode, it showed the destructiveness of being consumed by that intoxication. June’s dazed smile as she buried that gun in the yard, dreaming of the wrongs Serena had done her, wasn’t the smile of someone with a future, but the look of a fanatic. Increasingly in Season 5, June is finding her rage countered by the wisdom of acceptance. First by Sylvia, and now by Rita and Luke, she’s been warned her off her current path. If she continues to let herself be consumed by revenge, that’s exactly how she’ll end up – consumed.
Unfortunately for June, she and Serena are currently locked in a Black Swan-style psychodrama where each is a reflection of the other. Hence the...

“Everything tastes better when Fred is dead.”
June Osborne speaks those words while sitting at a diner and having a celebratory meal, to the tune of Dolly Parton’s “Gettin’ Happy.” The irony of the uplifting vibe is that Elisabeth Moss’ starring character — who is in a state of shock after leading the violent group murder of her former commander and abuser, Gilead leader Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), as is evidenced by his dried blood remaining caked on her face and hands — only finds a fleeting moment of happiness while in the eatery with her fellow former handmaids.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the first two episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 “Morning” and “Ballet.”] After a bloody end to The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 (and Joseph Fiennes’ Fred), the Hulu drama kicks off Season 5 with two emotional hours. A quick recap: June (Elisabeth Moss) confesses to Fred’s murder, only to find out she won’t face any legal consequences since it didn’t happen in Canada. Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) uses Fred’s funeral to show Gilead off to the world with a televised event, one June and Luke (O-t Fagbenle) see — including that their daughter, Hannah, is present. Plus, June finds out that Emily returned to Gilead to fight. And in Gilead, Esther (Mckenna Grace), after being taken to the Putnams to become their handmaid, poisons herself and Janine (Madeline Brewer). Here, executive producer Bruce Miller ...

Fox has given a series order to hourlong pilot The Big Leap, starring Scott Foley, Teri Polo and Piper Perabo, from Liz Heldens, Jason Winer, Sue Naegle, 20th Television and Fox Entertainment.
The ballet-themed dramedy, which I hear has received a 10-episode order, had been an internal favorite. The pilot was met with enthusiastic reception by Fox executives which has been compared to the reaction at the network to the Glee pilot more than a decade ago. The pickup completes The Big Leap‘s six-year journey to the screen.
Written by Heldens inspired by the UK reality series Big Ballet, The Big Leap is described as a modern tale about second chances, chasing your dreams and taking back what’s yours. The show revolves around a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck characters attempting to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show that builds to a live production of Swan Lake.

Now for a real treat for musical fans, a core MGM dazzler with top stars, fully restored and looking incredibly good. Vincente Minnelli’s snappy, funny 1948 show isn’t ranked among producer Arthur Freed’s best but it ought to be. Silly farce gets a high-toned, technically amazing workout as Judy Garland’s demure señorita secretly lusts after the ruthless corsair of the title, Mack the Black! Gene Kelly’s slippery carny womanizer impersonates her piratical fantasy sex object, and it all ends in clowning and killer musical numbers. Cole Porter’s smart songs attest to the great orchestrators and arrangers in MGM’s world-class music department; the new full digital restoration makes the movie look and sound better than I’ve certainly ever seen it.

Shinya Tsukamoto's Vital and A Snake of June are playing on Mubi in the United States in the double bill The Human Extremes of Shinya Tsukamoto.Top: A Snake of June. Above: Vital. Shinya Tsukamoto has explored the full spectrum of human darkness over his four decades of filmmaking, including the raw nihilism of 1989’s Tetsuo: Iron Man, the desperate grief of 1998’s Bullet Ballet, and the paralyzing pacifism of 2018’s Killing, just to name a few select examples. And yet the director is usually only associated with the violence and surrealism of the earlier films, particularly edgelord employee pick Tetsuo. What’s often overlooked by fans is that these earlier films stem from the same fascinations foregrounded in his later, more restrained works like Killing (2018) and Fires on the Plain (2014): abject corporeality amid environments molding us as much as we exist in them, and ontological explorations of breaking through those constraints.

Russian multi-hyphenate Fedor Bondarchuk was riding high after a series of blockbuster hits when Hollywood came calling in 2014. Fresh off the domestic success of his alien invasion movie “Attraction,” and the World War II epic “Stalingrad,” Warner Bros. tapped him to direct a big-budget movie based on Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey.”
But then a devastating economic crisis hit Russia, and the deal unraveled, with Bondarchuk deciding he couldn’t decamp to Hollywood at a time when his own country was reeling. It was a prescient move. Six years later, the domestic market in Russia is booming, international sales are growing by leaps and bounds, and Bondarchuk’s Art Pictures Studio has become one of the country’s more formidable production houses.
