The Story: A goofball gym teacher (Mark Harmon) is forced to teach a remedial English class over the summer.
The Players: Starring: Mark Harmon, Kirstie Alley, Dean Cameron, Courtney Thorne-Smith & Shawnee Smith. Music by Danny Elfman. Directed by Carl Reiner.
The History: Hollywood spent a couple of years trying to make Mark Harmon happen as a movie star. Fresh off an arc on “St. Elsewhere” which infamously had his character contract AIDS from a one-night stand, his career was red hot. For a while, he was seriously considered to replace Don Johnson on “Miami Vice” after contract negotiations fell through, and in 1987-88, we got a bunch of starring vehicles that would try him out in a variety of genres to see if one would stick. He did action in The Presidio (even doing his own stunts – although the film was stolen by co-star Sean Connery), drama in Stealing Home,...

The slashing that began with “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin” will continue in Max’s upcoming “Pretty Little Liars: Summer School,” and Cosmopolitan unveiled first look images at the upcoming second season that promises to go bigger and badder on the slasher sequel mayhem.
“Pretty Little Liars: Summer School” is set to return later this Spring on Max, with first look images below.

Mark Harmon has been married to Pam Dawber for decades, now. And although the two boast one of the happiest marriages in Hollywood, at one point Dawber couldn’t imagine herself a married woman.

Dawber and Harmon both married in 1987 and never looked back. It all started with Harmon famously making his move on his wife through a mutual friend. According to an interview with People, the friend wanted to set Harmon up on a group date. But Harmon preferred to speak to Dawber personally.
“I said, ‘Can I just call? Can I get a number and just cold call?’ And so I did. I got the number, and I called, and I got an answering machine. And I started to leave a message that said, ‘We don’t have to all go out. We could...

By the end of its fifth season, "Cheers" had become one of the most popular sitcoms on television. Every Thursday night, viewers tuned in to hang with the regulars at the Boston pub where everybody knows your name, and the gang always delivered. You could put the "Cheers" gang up against the very best in the history of the medium.
Most amazingly, the series didn't miss a beat when Woody Harrelson stepped in for Nick Colasanto after the latter's unexpected death. It just became a different kind of excellent.
And yet, as the show headed into its sixth season, no one was sure if "Cheers" could survive the departure of Shelley Long. The actor's combustible, Tracy-Hepburn chemistry with Ted Danson gave every episode the charge of the unexpected, and kept everyone in their orbit perpetually unsettled. Without her, the entire dynamic of the show might change, turning fans off a...

Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" is all about growing older. Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) is rounding middle age and has to start wearing glasses. He also has to face the fact that he fathered a child many years ago, while also facing a foe he abandoned on a distant planet and forgot about. Kirk's youthful days of recklessness are catching up to him.
Meanwhile, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) is on the cusp of retirement and has found a protégé he intends to train as his replacement. This is the young lieutenant Saavik (Kirstie Alley), a half-Vulcan, half-Romulan officer who is as baffled by humanity as Spock was in his early Enterprise days. Saavik is also confident and even a little arrogant, qualities she will start to outgrow by the film's conclusion.

Mark Harmon starred in a few notable projects beyond NCIS. Years before he was cast as Jethro Gibbs in the police procedural, Harmon starred in the cult classic comedy Summer School. But he initially wasn’t interested in doing the project, and urged for another star in mind to take his place.

Mark Harmon is famous for his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS — but that’s far from the only role he played. In the ’70s and ’80s, Harmon started to act in TV shows and movies. He went on to play Freddy Shoop in the 1987 film Summer School. While Harmon might reflect fondly on the role of Freddy Shoop now, he recalled how his wife didn’t want him to take the part.
‘NCIS’ star Mark Harmon said his wife told him not to take this film role
Mark Harmon made the right choice to take the role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS in 2003. The part launched Harmon to superstardom. Now, he’s a household name for CBS viewers. But NCIS isn’t the only production Harmon participated in. Over a decade before he accepted the role of Gibbs, Harmon played Freddy Shoop in Summer School.

When Titus Welliver first met over Zoom with Greg Walker to discuss the role of Lex Luthor, the Titans showrunner was bowled over by the Deadwood alum’s incredible wealth of DC Comics savvy.

Eleven months in to 2021, and Warner Bros. movie streaming strategy on HBO Max is still going strong. Now the list of new releases for November 2021 on HBO Max is highlighted by yet another big ticket film.
King Richard, starring Will Smith, is set to arrive on HBO Max and in theaters on Nov. 19. The movie will tell the story of Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. Smith is already getting some early awards buzz for the role so Oscar-heads may want to check this one out.

November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).
But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. All of that content, plus a number of library classics, including but not limited to “Moonstruck,...

Stargirl was fixin’ for a fight in the Season 2 premiere of the CW superhero series, and by the end of the hour, boy did she find one!
But first…. The new season opened with a flashback to “Decades Earlier,” where a young girl named Rebecca was forbidden by her mom from attending a friend’s birthday party across the street. When a (creepy af) little boy named Bruce appeared out of nowhere and goaded Rebecca into ignoring her busy mom, the lass scampered across the street. There, Bruce nudged Rebecca to steal one of the presents piled outside the front door.

This Stargirl review contains spoilers.
Stargirl Season 2 Episode 1
The Stargirl season 2 premiere poses a big question: How does a teen hero come to terms with life as a normal teenager after putting on the suit? Courtney (Brec Bassinger) is dealing with just that as we join her back in Blue Valley, Nebraska.
While we begin the episode with a spooky flashback which seems to show the death of Doctor Mid-Nite’s daughter decades before at the hands of Eclipso, things in Blue Valley in 2021 are eerily quiet. And not in a spooky cool kind of way, but in a… there’s no need for a teenage iteration of the Justice Society of America kind of way. That doesn’t mean Court isn’t trying her best, though. She has her teen team of Yolanda/Wildcat (Yvette Monreal), Rick/Hour Man (Cameron Gellman), and Beth/Doctor Mid-Nite (Anjelika Washington) out prowling the streets,...

The word rang out this morning in the world of laughter. A member of comedy royalty had taken his last well-deserved bow.
Here’s how the AP news service spread the word:
New York (AP) — Carl Reiner, the ingenious and versatile writer, actor and director who broke through as a “second banana” to Sid Caesar and rose to comedy’s front ranks as creator of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and straight man to Mel Brooks’ “2000 Year Old Man,” has died. He was 98.

Comedy legend and TV pioneer Carl Reiner died at 98, according to Variety. His assistant, Judy Nagy, said he was with his family when he died of natural causes at his home in Beverly Hills on Monday night.
Reiner was one of the true greats. He helped shape comedy on television from the early golden era. Filmed comedy would not be the same without him. Even standup comedy owes him a great debt. There are sandwiches named after him in kosher delis around the world. Reiner was always beloved, and forever acting. He was instantly popular from the moment he appeared on Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows in 1950. He and Mel Brooks brought a party gag to national prominence they created the “2,000 Year Old Man” routine. He was veteran conman Saul Bloom in Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven movie franchise, played Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer’s stepfather on Two and a Half Men.

Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson were the perfect pair in Grease! The iconic movie tells the story about a high school couple who struggle to make their relationship work after they fall madly in love with one another over the summer. In the beloved film, Olivia Newton-John famously played good-girl Sandy and John Travolta portrayed Danny, a grease-loving bad boy. This year, the film turns 40 and in honor of the anniversary, Grease star Didi Conn (aka Frenchy!) dished on some big behind-the-scenes secrets from the 1978 musical. In a new interview, Didi revealed that John was attracted to Olivia during the movie's shoot. "Oh yeah, [he did like her]. What was so much fun was that most of us were older than the characters we were playing so we just stayed in character all day long. So there was an ongoing improvisation happening so the flirting… was fine. It was the context of the characters and the storyline,...

Cults and their leaders have always equally repulsed, fascinated, and terrified me. The repulsion and terror are obvious markers for any sane person, but some would rather not have it in their lives at all, thank you very much. This is also a lucid and healthy response. But in horror we look for the cathartic in the carnal; and while Bad Dreams (1988) spends a great deal of effort mining a very similar vein as A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), it succeeds in carving out its own modest slice in the late ‘80s landscape.
Released stateside in April by Twentieth Century Fox, Bad Dreams made back its $4 million dollar budget opening weekend, but petered out after it pulled in just over $9 million total. A profit, yes, but not the big numbers they were hoping for based on what they thought was a foolproof Elm Street format. Oh, and...

Summer School was an awesome movie. There, I’ve said it, it’s out and I don’t care who knows it. I mean come on, do you realize this stars Mark Harmon before the Gibbs era? He was actually a laid back, carefree guy in this movie and it was great. Plus, it actually stars a couple of other personalities you might recognize and has one of the absolute best gore scenes in a comedy that anyone has ever seen, period.
