The Beatles’ songs from A to Z are a study of how the band changed the course of pop music. The songwriting, melodies, instrumentals, and recording technqiues established the band as among the most influential in music history. But for all their success, The Beatles remained active for a relatively short period of time.
In 10 years, The Beatles released 14 albums in what’s considered their core catalog. It includes just over 200 songs from John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Some are much more memorable than others, but every Beatles song from A to Z has its own story and interesting facts to keep listeners entertained even when the music stops.

The Beatles covered songs by many artists. For example, they put their own spin on a girl group song during their early years. The cover became a belated hit in the 1990s.
The Beatles’ cover of a song by the girl group The Shirelles became a hit
The Beatles peppered their early discography with covers. For example, The Beatles recorded “Baby It’s You” by The Shirelles for their first album: Please Please Me. The Beatles’ live version of “Baby It’s You” became a single in 1995 to promote the album Live at the BBC.
According to The Official Charts Company, the live “Baby Its You” was a big hit in the United Kingdom. There, the tune reached No. 7 and stayed on the chart for 14 weeks. On the other hand, Live at the BBC peaked at No. 1 and spent 23 weeks on the U.K. chart.

The Rolling Stones eventually developed into a band capable of writing their own No. 1 hits, but they relied on cover songs and kind composers giving them music on many of their early tunes. John Lennon and Paul McCartney gave the Stones the song that became their first hit. Mick Jagger and Keith Richard gave away a top-10 hit to another musician before The Rolling Stones notched a top-10 tune of their own.

It’s hardly a stretch to say The Beatles dominated the 1960s, especially from 1963 onward. Their energetic debut album, Please Please Me, bowled over young English music fans. The United States finally caught up nearly a year later with the Fab Four’s historic appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The fact that The Beatles had 71 songs land in the top 100 of the Billboard singles chart is as impressive as their 20 No. 1 hits.

Burt Bacharach was one of the most distinguished and successful composers of the last century.
Working most fruitfully with the lyricist Hal David, his addictively intelligent songs embodied unconventional time signatures, shifting chords and a fusion of pop and rock, jazz, and Latin elements. With Bacharach’s adventurous song structures married to David’s words, often bittersweet lyrics as though from a cinematic school of realism, the duo were like the personification of New York’s Brill Building hit factory.
Although not all these songs were with David, Bacharach, who has died aged 94, enjoyed more than 50 UK Top 40 hits, and more than 70 in his native US. A remarkable 38 of these tunes were with the classically trained former gospel singer Dionne Warwick with whom the pair began working in 1962. Several of Bacharach’s compositions were bigger hits in the UK than in America.

Elvis Costello paid tribute to his longtime friend and collaborator Burt Bacharach Thursday night following news of the legendary songwriter’s death at the age of 94.

Burt Bacharach, the composer and bandleader whose elegant melodies dominated pop radio for several decades, has died at the age of 94.
Bacharach’s publicist, Tina Brausam, confirmed to the Associated Press that the songwriter died of natural causes on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles.
During his 1960s heyday, Bacharach — along with his earliest and most productive partner, lyricist Hal David — wrote songs that became hits and, later, timeless standards. Among their many classics were “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “The Look of Love,...

Songwriter, composer, producer and arranger Burt Bacharach, a dominant force in American popular music for half a century, died of natural causes in Los Angeles on Wednesday. He was 94.
Bacharach’s publicist Tina Brausam revealed the news on Thursday.
As a tunesmith, the nonpareil melodist Bacharach found fame in every medium.
His songs — many of them written with lyricist Hal David — became chart-topping successes, particularly in the hands of vocalist Dionne Warwick. Among ’60s songwriting duos, only Lennon-McCartney rivaled Bacharach-David in terms of commercial and artistic achievement. Bacharach collected six Grammys as a writer, arranger and performer from 1967-2005.
His music was ubiquitous on screens both big and small in the ’60s and ’70s, and he was recognized by the Academy Awards and Golden Globes for his work on “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969) and “Arthur” (1981). He collected a 1971 Emmy for a TV recital of his work.

She's back! More than 10 years after JoJo topped the charts with her hit singles "Leave (Get Out)" and "Baby It's You," the R&B singer has made her grand return. The early 2000s favorite, now 24, debuted her first new song in years on Wednesday, April 15. While she gave it little promotion, "Far From Heaven" made its way online and counted thousands of plays in its first few hours. The sultry single has the songstress crooning, "So far from heaven with nowhere to run / Should've seen [...]...

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
Bette Midler was on "The Tonight Show" with Jimmy Fallon Wednesday night -- and The Divine Miss M is still looking good (divine!) at 68. She talked about her new album, which is a tribute to all the girl groups she loves. Jimmy said he loves girl groups too, and Bette sang a little bit of TLC. In the second video, Bette told Jimmy she'd really like to interview herself. So they did ... a Lip Flip! Halfway through the video, they started singing "Baby It's You" by The Shirelles, and it was as bizarre as you'd imagine. She's a good lip-flipper, though.
Comedian Jim Gaffigan was also on "The Tonight Show,...

I first encountered Griffin Dunne, now 58, as one of the New York producers, with partner Amy Robinson, of Joan Micklin Silver's "Chilly Scenes of Winter." He went on to produce "Baby It's You" and "Running on Empty" as he pursued an acting career, starring in Martin Scorsese's "After Hours" and John Landis's "An American Werewolf in London," and more recently, "House of Lies," "Red Band Society," "The Discovers" and "Dallas Buyers Club." Read: Griffin Dunne Talks Acting, "The Discoverers" Dunne is also a director; among a string of decent indie features, his 1995 debut short film "Duke of Groove" was nominated for an Oscar, and he's been directing "The Good Wife" and writing a feature that he'd like to direct. Mostly he's been fine-tuning the doc about Joan Didion, now that he's finished interviewing her. "She was really...

We're looking forward to continuing the "Jewels in the Wasteland" series at some point with films from 1984-1986! Below are various titles that would have fit nicely in this first section of 80s films. Before we get going again, we'll likely have some one-off screenings (hopefully Pixote and Baby It's You) that represent additional titles from the first part of the 80s, so keep an eye out for them.
In the meantime, please feel free to check out the below suggestions:
Last month's Atlantic City begs you to continue with both Louis Malle's My Dinner with Andre and Bill Forsyth's Local Hero with Burt Lancaster. If you love Local Hero like I think you will, please check out an earlier film of his, Gregory's Girl. I noticed Danny Boyle included a clip from it during his Olympic opening ceremonies.

I first encountered Griffin Dunne, now 58, as one of the New York producers, with partner Amy Robinson, of Joan Micklin Silver's "Chilly Scenes of Winter." He went on to a strong producing ("Baby It's You," "Running on Empty") and acting career, starring in Martin Scorsese's "After Hours" and John Landis's "An American Werewolf in London," and more recently, the occasional character turn in television ("House of Lies") and such films as "Dallas Buyers Club." And this week he ably carries the new family comedy "The Discoverers" from New York politico and academic turned writer-director Justin Schwartz, who cast Dunne as a washed-up professor--natch--who drags his two reluctant teenagers ("Californication" star Madeleine Martin and "American Horror Story"'s Devon Graye) on an unexpected Lewis & Clarke Oregon road trip. Dunne gets to use his chops as a slapstick comedian in "The Discoverers," which opens in Los Angeles this Friday.

In the mid-2000s, teen sensation JoJo burst onto the scene with hit songs like "Leave (Get Out)," "Baby It's You," and "Too Little Too Late." And then ... nothing.
The 22-year-old R&B singer, who was 13 when she released her first studio album, is suing her label Blackground Records and its subsidiary, Da Family, for keeping her from releasing a new album in seven years. JoJo has reportedly been butting heads with the label for years, and is suing to finally get out of her extended contract. [Insert "Leave, Get Out" and "Too Little Too Late" jokes here.]
THR reports that JoJo filed suit in New York on July 29, attempting to get out of the contract by a New York state law that specifies that minors who sign contracts can not be held to them for more than seven years. JoJo, who has been attempting to release her third album for years, stated in the lawsuit that she has been “dissatisfied...

It's an irony, given his obsession with our surveillance culture, that if you were to cast the voice of Orwell's Big Brother, Adam Curtis would be hard to beat. The BBC documentary-maker – justly celebrated for series that include The Century of the Self, The Power of Nightmares and All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace – speaks with such paternal conviction, such stylish wisdom, that given half a day in a film archive you suspect he could have you believe pretty much anything. This Manchester international festival collaboration with Bristol-based trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack is billed as a playful showdown, a versus, in the manner of a rap contest or a prize fight; the vast derelict train depot in which this battle is being staged over 10 nights offers a suitably raw-boned backdrop for the high-decibel stand-off – earplugs are given out at the door – but it quickly becomes...
