Ranger : Sorry folks - can't be there!
Joshua : [to Margaret] We can't be here.
Margaret : Must be somewhere else instead!
Ranger : Ah, didn't you see me wave?
Margaret : We waved back.
Ranger : Well, didn't you see the sign?
Joshua : What sign?
Ranger : Erosion control.
Joshua : You mean, we're eroding so we can't be here?
Margaret : Oh, Dear, don't tease him, he thinks you mean it.
Joshua : I do mean it.
Margaret : You look dazzling in that uniform! Why don't you join us in some wine?
Ranger : You're not allowed to drink alcohol here either.
Joshua : You know a man my age has very few pleasures left.
Ranger : I'm sorry. You'll have to stop.
Joshua : I've been saying that for years!
Ranger : Ah, look, could we discuss this over on the boardwalk? It's bad for the dunes.
Joshua : Walking on them?
Ranger : Wears them out.
Joshua : Wears me out. I doubt it wears them out.
Ranger : Sir, I don't want to argue with you...
Joshua : Good!
Ranger : The geological facts are that every time someone walks on the dunes, their footprints leave a slightly greater depression in the sand. They gouge out these exposed paths and before you know it, you've got what we call a "Blow out".
Ranger : Heavens!
Joshua : How long have you been on this seashore?
Ranger : Three months.
Joshua : We've walked on this beach for over fifty years. We've seen erosion plans come and go and they always fail - and you know why? Because erosion is a natural state of Cape Cod. As it is with everything else here. Have some wine.
Ranger : Sorry. Rules are rules.
Joshua : Yes, rules certainly are that - and nothing else.
Ranger : You gonna cooperate?
Joshua : Just don't shoot. We'll come peacefully.
Ranger : Thank you.
[he gets up to leave]
Joshua : Be careful where you step.
[to Margaret]
Joshua : Power hungry!
Margaret : Must be the artist in you.
Joshua : What do you mean?
Margaret : You always seem to clash with authority figures.
Joshua : Oh, that's nothing. You inspired that, long ago.
Margaret : Oh!
