Self-isolation is providing a fillip for Foxtel with a spike in viewers for its movie channels.
In addition, Foxtel Movies Store is benefiting from the decision by the Us majors to fast forward the on-demand release of titles such as Onward, The Invisible Man and Emma, whose cinema runs were curtailed.
Meanwhile, development on Foxtel Original projects continues with virtual writers’ rooms. Season 8 of Fremantle’s Wentworth is in the can and will premiere mid-year.
There are four weeks to go on Endemol Shine Australia’s Googlebox Australia, filmed with a skeleton crew with as little interaction as possible and extra safety precautions including safe distancing.
Foxtel executive director of TV Brian Walsh tells If: “With Covid-19 shutting down almost all production around the globe, we find ourselves in a similar situation as we place the safety and health of all our cast and crew above everything we do.

The 1975 have once again postponed the release date on their album Notes on a Conditional Form, most likely due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The band didn’t release a statement explaining the change but posted the new date — May 22nd — and a preorder link to their social media accounts. The announcement also included a new design for the album cover and packaging, as well as a full 22-song tracklist.

BBC America’s critical and fan darling Killing Eve is returning for a third season! Of course, there wasn’t even time for doubt, since the Killing Eve Season 3 announcement was made in April at the AMC Networks Summit (BBC America is co-owned by AMC and BBC Studios), only one day after the second season premiere. Interestingly enough, the network continued its preemptive renewal strategy in January 2020, giving an early order for Season 4!
Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, and Fiona Shaw star in the series that follows MI6 operative Eve (Oh) as she tracks psychopathic assassin Villanelle (Comer)—or is it the other way around? It is based on Luke Jennings’ Codename Villanelle book series.

Killing Eve Season 3 is arriving earlier than expected – two weeks early, precisely.
BBC America, by way of mothership company AMC Networks Entertainment Group, has moved up the release date of the much-anticipated third season premiere—a simulcast on sister channels BBC America and AMC—of the Emmy-winning Killing Eve to Sunday, April 12 at 9 p.m. from its original release date of April 26, on which it was scheduled for 10 p.m.
News of the date shift also arrived with the first proper trailer for Killing Eve Season 3 after months of teasers.
As Sarah Barnett, president of AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios, explains of the move in a statement:
“We know how adored this series is and we know how keen people are for great content right now,” adding, “This season of Killing Eve digs deep psychologically, and with actors like Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer and Fiona Shaw the results are nothing short of astonishing.

Samantha Strauss on the set of ‘The End.’
Two days ago Samantha Strauss spent much of the day under the doona, literally crying about the state of the world.
Yesterday Strauss, one of the country’s most successful screenwriters, was back at her computer, working on multiple projects in development for Made Up Stories and Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films, Joanna Werner and See-Saw Films, including a second season of The End.
“I’m incredibly lucky but it is such a time of unparalleled shitness. I still have some scripts to deliver so that will tide me over for a while.” she tells If.
“It does feel like there’s a responsibility for us content makers to work our arses off right now and have a whole lot of local content ready to be made, just as soon as this hell is over.”

Until you start watching killer rat movies, you don’t realize how few killer rat movies there are. It’s not a sub-genre that sparked off franchises (does Willard and its sequel Ben count? Let me know) or inspired Funko toys, but rather has films strewn here and there throughout horror history. Today we’re scurrying back to my particular turf for Deadly Eyes (1982), Golden Harvest’s Canadian-lensed attempt to move over from Kung Fu to Rodent Fu. (Sorry Joe Bob Briggs, I couldn’t resist.)
Released in October by Golden Harvest (the Honk Kong based studio with nearly 300 production credits) in Canada and stateside by Warner Brothers the following April, Deadly Eyes (aka Night Eyes) laid droppings all over the place according to critics and audiences alike, and was quickly relegated to clamshell heaven. Was it a film ahead of its time? God no. But Deadly Eyes is way more fun than I remembered,...

Forgotten amid Robert Aldrich’s more critic-friendly movies is this superb suspense picture, an against-all-odds thriller that pits an old-school pilot against a push-button young engineer with his own kind of male arrogance. Can a dozen oil workers and random passengers ‘invent’ their way out of an almost certain death trap? It’s a late-career triumph for James Stewart, at the head of a sterling ensemble cast. I review a UK disc in the hope of encouraging a new restoration.

Blade Runner and BSG alumnus Edward James Olmos will play Robert Gonzales in S.H.I.E.L.D., a character with 'massive repercussions'...
With the revelations that occured in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s recent midseason finale (which we went into in detail about here), it's fair to assume that there will be new challenges, enemies and allies for Coulson and co. after the excellent Agent Carter rounds-off its run.
As such, it's a nice surprise to see a highly ambigous casting announcement. Indeed, it seems Marvel is playing some cards close to its chest on this one.
They've told us that Edward James Olmos will play 'Robert Gonzales', though, of course that could be a decoy from a more recognisable Marvel moniker. If there's a clue there, we can't decipher it.
The only Marvel Gonzaleses in the internet's hive memory were police officer Vincent, and his sister Michele.

Scottish author James Hogg's 1824 novel The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner, a kind of religious satire/polemic crossed with a doppelganger tale and a forerunner of the plot twists of both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Fight Club, ends with a curse against anyone tampering with its text.
In 1988, celebrated Scots filmmaker Bill Douglas prepared a screenplay adaptation, but died before he could get it made. I was present when the producer suggested it as a suitable project for Lindsay Anderson to take over, but Anderson himself died not long afterwards. A fresh script has recently been created by crime writer Ian Rankin and James Mavor, but has yet to go before the cameras. Madonna in Die Another Day? Keith Richards in Pirates Of The Caribbean? James ponders the importance of celebrity cameos in the movies…
This article contains spoilers for Burke And Hare and other cameos, if you've not yet seen the films.
Wow! This article begins with an appearance from Bill Murray! Oh, he's missed the train and is now left behind on the platform and we're already heading down the line of no return. I guess the narrative isn't following him. Never mind. On with the journey...
(If this means nothing to you, you clearly haven't seen The Darjeeling Limited and I recommend you watch it. For a start, you get to see Bill Murray missing a train.)
Back on track and I'd like to talk about cameos. This concept is a curious phenomenon unique to the motion picture and television realms. They didn't have cameo appearances before the invention of cinema.

The exciting news that Soderbergh will be tackling our favorite genre has been around for a few months, but now the folks over at scriptshadow have gotten their hands on a copy of the script and put out a review, and according to them he'll be going for a "cinema verite, documentary approach" which I dig.
Here's how it starts off (or at least that's what they make it sound like:
It’s Thanksgiving week. Beth Emhoff is coming back from work in Hong Kong. At O’Hare airport, she begins to feel sick.
Li Fai, a worker at a casino, is heading to Hong Kong on a ferry. He, also, is feeling weary.
Irina, a Ukrainian model, doing her best to push through a photo shoot, feels like she’s going to pass out.
I know, it sounds like the beginning of so many other films, and from what...

Last week on Lost, the late Dogen gave us a myth of scales. “For every man, there is a scale,” the Temple Master explained. “On one side of the scale there is good, on the other side… evil.” It was unclear if Dogen was saying that it would be best if the scale always tipped toward good, or if the scale is best when perfectly balanced—that reality requires a “unity of opposites,” to borrow a philosophical phrase. (I also like the philosophical phrases “lunch” and “Coincidentia Oppositorium,” which totally needs to be a Harry Potter spell.) Time will tell...

The William Castle Film Collection (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, $80.95) includes eight pictures produced and directed by master showman Castle. In Part One of this lengthy DVD review, I dissected four of them—13 Ghosts, Homicidal and the two best, The Tingler and Mr. Sardonicus. Believe you me, it was a ghastly business! As Sardonicus would say, “I have known a ghoul—a disgusting creature that opens graves and feeds on corpses.” Like a DVD reviewer. See here.
In this epic conclusion, I am fitted out with a Strait-jacket (about time!) and also chronicle Zotz!, 13 Frightened Girls and The Old Dark House, the three Castle entries new to DVD (which lack the short, individual “making of” documentaries accompanying the other five). Only two of these eight flicks were shot in color (Girls, House); theatrical trailers are included with all of the movies. And that’s all you need to know as we continue—in amazing Screamarama,...
