For decades, viewers have been split on writer/director Meir Zarchi’s 1978 film I Spit on Your Grave (watch it Here). Some write it off as reprehensible trash. Some – including legendary drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs – think it’s a worthwhile revenge thriller. The film has developed a cult following, and now the folks at Printed in Blood, a publisher of art books, have announced that they’ll be celebrating the 45th anniversary of I Spit on Your Grave by releasing a collector’s edition I Spit on Your Grave Scriptbook!
Also known as Day of the Woman, I Spit on Your Grave stars Camille Keaton as a young woman who is brutally attacked and left for dead by a group of men. She then sets out to exact revenge on her attackers. Zarchi has said he was inspired to make the movie after helping a woman who had...

"I Spit On Your Grave Deja Vu" picks up with Jennifer Hills (Camille Keaton) as a best-selling author living in New York City with her famous model daughter, Christy Hills (Jamie Bernadette). There are horror movies that will give you nightmares, and cause you to fear showers and shallow waters for decades. There are some that get deep under your skin – often times because they've literally flayed or burrowed under their characters' skins – and others that will make you see everyday items (a bowl of pea soup, a hockey mask, a videotape) in a horrifying new light. And then there are the ones that push so many social-taboo envelopes, strike so many collective raw nerves and tweak so many communal gag reflexes that they are a cut,...

This weekend I went to the Son of Monsterpalooza horror convention and attended a panel for a new horror movie coming out called Death House, and this movie looks absolutely insane!
The movie was directed by B. Harrison Smith, who says that he made Death House as a way to help reinvigorate the horror genre. He's an ambitious guy who hopes the film will be a cultural timepiece for the genre. The team behind the film didn't set out to make a cheap-ass horror film for the sake of making a cheap-ass horror film. They wanted to make something great, something that hardcore horror fans would respect and appreciate. The movie is also packed full of horror movie Easter eggs.
Dee Wallace (E.T., Cujo, The Hollowing) is one of the film's stars, and she says that Death House is one of the most unique horror film projects that she's ever been a part of.

Last year Bruce Campbell talked about an idea for a horror movie that he described as The Expendables of horror films — a film that would bring together a ton of classic horror stars together in one movie. It was a great idea that got horror fans really excited and is now being brought to life. Unfortunately, it’s not coming from Bruce Campbell.
The movie is being directed by B. Harrison Smith, who has made a few movies that I’ve never heard of like Camp Dread and Zombie Killers: Elephant Graveyard. The script for the film was written by the late Gunnar Hansen, who is best known for playing Leatherface in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films.
The cast of the movie is pretty impressive and includes Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), Bill Moseley (House of a 1000 Corpses), Michael Berryman...

Massimo Dallamano may be best known to some as the cinematographer of Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965), credited under the pseudonym Jack Dalmas. Following his collaborations with Leone, Dallamano would only serve as cinematographer twice more (his last credit being French director Michel Deville’s 1966 comedy The Mona Lisa Has Been Stolen starring George Chakiris and Marina Vlady). The explosive popularity of the spaghetti western would allow Dallamano to begin his own career as a director, with 1967 debut Bandidos (credited under another pseudonym, Max Dillman), but he’d soon after turn to the bread and butter of more exploitative genre fare. The director of eleven features, up until his death in 1976, Dallamano’s enduring, fascinating masterpiece stands as the 1972 title What Have You Done to Solange? Credited as a giallo staple, Dallamano’s film is more of a hybrid of subgenres, a mixed giallo and poliziotteschi film.

December 15th is definitely a great day to be a cult film fan as we’ve got a bunch of stellar titles making their home entertainment bows this week. Scream Factory is releasing several films on Blu this Tuesday—The Car, Zombie High and the double feature of The Dungeonmaster and Eliminators—and Arrow Video is keeping busy as well with their special editions of both Blood Rage and What Have You Done to Solange?
Other notable titles include The Last Horror Film, Count Dracula, The Toxic Avenger Collection, a double feature of Axe and Kidnapped Coed as well as the most recent iteration of Fantastic Four.
The Car (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
The peaceful tranquility of a small Western town is disturbed when a murderous car wreaks havoc by viciously mowing down innocent victims. The new sheriff, Wade Parent (James Brolin), may be the only one who can stop this menace in its tracks.

Is it too late to spit again? Fans of the original 1978 cult classic I Spit On Your Grave (review) have been eagerly hoping for a bloody sequel for 37 years. Now their wishes have been answered, but has it been to long of a wait for this sequel?
I certainly don't think so, and I welcome it! Especially since Camille Keaton will reunite with director Meir Zarchi to reprise her role of Jennifer Hills in the direct sequel, I Spit On Your Grave: Deja Vu.
I'm personally stoked for this new chapter, and am especially looking forward to seeing the character Jennifer Hills again, joined by her daughter Christy Hills (Jamie Bernadette) as well as a variety of new characters, including actress Maria Olsen who plays the role of Johnny’s wife, the gas station attendant that Jennifer castrated.

Also in this morning's round-up: details on the New York City Horror Film Festival and the Colorado Horror Convention, as well as information on how to watch The Walking Dead online and release details for Eli Morgan Gesner's Condemned.
The Last Witch Hunter: "The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including Kaulder, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the Queen curses Kaulder with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife.

It doesn't matter which horror site is your favorite. The horror community is small, and we're all in the same boat despite any differences. The thing is, we writers? We have no union. No one to take care of us. We all do this mainly for passion as I can tell you none of us is getting rich.
That's why we implore you guys to take a moment and visit horror writer Bj Colangelo's personal blog. Bj contributes to the Day of the Woman website, which is dedicated to offering a female slant on the genre. To say she's an important voice in our community is kind of an understatement.
Recently Bj went through the hell of dealing with an especially violent bout of pancreatic cancer, and though she's managed to thankfully pull through, she's now suffering from the stress caused by some truly crushing medical bills.

The big payoff moment. The money shot. The Omg/Wtf/Nsfw scene in horror. These are the moments that define films. The moment that either grosses and disgusts or shocks the audience in such a way that they have to come back for the sequel. Here are our Top 13 Wtf Moments in Horror.
We're going to try to keep this to relatively mainstream films. That's not to say that some lesser known indies haven't had some shocking moments, but things seem that much more disturbing when the movie in question reaches a wide audience.
Beginning with our honorable mentions, we've got to include I Spit on Your Grave, one of the most censored and banned films of all times. Camille Keaton played Jennifer Hills who was raped for the better part of the first half of the film. Plenty of Nsfw moments there. Also those infamous shit-eaters in Salo: 120 Days of Sodom were certainly shocking.

The role of women in horror films has always been a hot topic for debate. Some critics argue that horror films marginalize women and paint them as hypersexual beings with no depth. The opposing argument asserts that the existence of a "Final Girl" in most horror films is a testament to female empowerment, and that horror features celebrate women and their role in the cinematic universe. There is merit to both sides of the argument, but rather than debate the issue, we are spotlighting some standout female characters in genre film. These are characters that have stood out to us and proved to be as strong or stronger than their male counterparts. These are characters that challenged some of the stereotypes associated with women in film. We featured ten of our favorites in September, but due to popular demand, we are bringing you a second installment. You can check out part one here.

So it’s that time of year again. October. The trees are changing, the sky is darkening and Halloween is just around the corner. It seems only fitting then, that horror movies are released in large volume and horror fans around the world are wetting their gills with what is on offer.
A few years back we were treated to a remake of Day of the Woman or I Spit on Your Grave and it was a very good remake that while it wasn’t for everyone did a good job at updating the premise and adding some much needed gore to the mix. I was surprised, to be honest, to hear they were putting out a sequel though, but here we are.

You know what I Spit On Your Grave is, and you should know by now if your sensibilities are too delicate to stomach such a thing. These movies have existed, even in their current form, since the early seventies and even before. A woman is brutalized for two thirds of the movie, and in the last act, she takes her revenge. I’ll never understand how somebody could condemn the remake of this film, or any film that borrows the formula, and then go on to talk about how much they love the original. What’s different? I’d argue that the rape scene was ten times as disturbing in the original than it has been in any of the imitators. I also can’t comprehend rating a movie based on political correctness. I’ve seen several people, friends included, rating this a 1/10. Really? I’m not demanding you “like” this movie,...

There's something undeniably satisfying about seeing the protagonist of a film exact sweet revenge upon those who wronged him or her. Even though what the protagonist is doing could be seen as wrong, we love to cheer them on and bear witness to their divine retribution. Just because two wrongs don’t make a right doesn’t mean that two wrongs can’t be fun. Retribution films appeal to our sense of justice. There's a basic belief ingrained in most people that those who do wrong must be punished, and those who are wronged must be vindicated. When we're subjected to watching the suffering of a seemingly reasonable person, we want nothing more than to see them exact swift and precise revenge upon their oppressor(s). Read on for our picks for ten of the most intensely satisfying retribution films in the horror, thriller, and suspense genres. Leon: the Professional...

The fantastic thing about the VHS years is that the poster art was frequently hand drawn and frequently had very little or nothing to do with the actual film. If you picked a film based solely on the box cover, you had a pretty good chance of being disappointed or at least surprised. Distributors seemed to see a snazzy box cover as a good way to get some mileage out of a subpar film. That still goes on today, but it seems to happen less frequently and the artwork just isn’t the same. In spite of the trickery that duped more than a couple of horror fans in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, there are some terrific and legitimate films that have terribly misleading – albeit awesome – cover art. Forthat reason, we present to you ten shining examples of awesomely misleading film artwork. Chopping Mall If you were to take...

Those damn dirty apes are back. "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" has started filming with Andy Serkis reprising his role as Caesar, directed by Matt Reeves ("Let Me In"). We knew that effects company Weta would return to create the same realistic, expressive apes from the first film that will be unleashed in theaters on May 23, and now plot details have emerged for the new chapter.
The film takes place 15 years after "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." Caesar leads a band of genetically evolved apes, but the humans that survived the deadly virus a decade earlier threaten their existence. A truce is formed, but things quickly spin out of control as war breaks out in the fight for dominance. Jason Clarke ("Zero Dark Thirty"), Gary Oldman ("The Dark Knight Rises"), Keri Russell ("Mission Impossible III"), Judy Greer ("The Descendants") also star, with Toby Kebbell ("RocknRolla") and...

Video Nasty is a term coined in the United Kingdom in 1982, describing films that were criticized by the press and religious groups for their violent content. The concern being that with titles available on home video, the films were accessible by anyone, with no age restrictions. The lack of a censorship system for home video titles led to The Video Recordings Act 1984. The Video Recordings Act required stricter censorship standards for titles released to home video than what was required for a film’s theatrical release.
With the introduction of home video in the UK, the governing standard of decency was the obscene publications act of 1959. Under that act, any title found to be indecent by the Director of Public Prosecutions could find the film’s producers, distributors and retailers subject to prosecution. The act also allowed for local police to seize content from video retailers if they felt that...

It’s a new FEARnet feature dedicated to the awesome women of horror, the final girls. A label first coined by film scholar Carol Clover, the Final Girl embarks on a battle against a monster which ultimately causes a personal transformation. In other words, this girl drives the story, fights the slasher, and at the end, is a changed person.
This week’s final girl is Jennifer Hills from I Spit on Your Grave (Day of the Woman), an extremely controversial film in its time and one that many still find difficult to watch. It’s held up as a classic example of a rape/revenge film and in some circles considered to be a positive force in the criticism of mainstream movie making, a reaction to violence against women and a fully feminist film.

Apparently the reboot of I Spit On Your Grave did well enough to warrant a sequel, and according to Bloody Disgusting, Thomas Fenton has been hired to write a sequel. There’s no information beyond that, as the project is in the earliest stages of conception, but it’s easy to legitimately speculate that a second installment might feature more rape and more revenge. Felton has a story credit on Saw IV and did work on (but was not credited with) Chain Letter. He’s also currently working on a biopic of John DeLorean for Nine/8 Entertainment. I Spit On Your Grave 2 might be the first major chance for us to see his writing talent on raw display, The production team is most likely looking to capitalize on re-invigorated name recognition, but it would be a cool nod if they called the new movie Day of the Woman. Just throwin’ it out there.

Hitchcock has been proposed for the national curriculum. Here are a few life lessons children might learn from watching his films
Never mind that cinema is the most popular storytelling medium of our time, and that if Bill Shakespeare were alive today, he would be writing screenplays, not stage plays; some people still think that, as an artform, it's automatically inferior to literature or theatre. So Heather Stewart, creative director of the BFI, caused a stir last week when she said: "The idea of popular cinema somehow being capable of great art at the same time as being entertaining is still a problem for some people. Shakespeare is on the national curriculum, Hitchcock is not."
One should never underestimate the educational value of films – and not just the worthy literary adaptations or bracing social documents our nannies imagine would be good for us. Adolescent exposure to The Charge of the Light Brigade,...

Do you remember a time when television stations would go off the air? The National Anthem would play and then white noise or test pattern bars would flash across the screen with your local station call sign. In a time before the 24 hour news cycle, television had its limitations, and those limitations were gradually broken by the ever increasing popularity of the Late Show and the Late Late Show and to a comedic extent, the Late Late Late Show. Well Troma has taken on cable television in all its syndicated, re-run driven, 24 hour feel by including a programming announcement and late night TV bumper on its release of Father’s Day. Get ready to feel as retro as a movie is supposed to make you feel.

To celebrate the upcoming release of the new psychological terror-filled tale Straw Dogs, Dread Central has decided to take a look back at movie characters who, like that film's David Sumner, have been pushed too far.
"How far would you go when pushed to your breaking point?" Over the years some great films have forced audiences to ask that question of themselves, and the chilling Straw Dogs, hitting theaters on September 16th, will do the same.
When we think of a movie character pushed too far, the man who comes immediately to mind is Michael Douglas' William Foster from Falling Down (If the guy would have just given him change for the phone). Douglas is simply brilliant as "D-Fens". His seething anger radiates from the film as he begins to become unraveled one piece at a time until his final bloody demise.
How about Travis Bickle? Perhaps Martin Scorsese's most disturbed character,...

Recently we had the opportunity to sit down with director Ho-Cheung Pang to talk about his latest film, Dream Home (review here), which is available now on VOD courtesy of IFC Midnight. Dig it!
DC: The events of Dream Home take place in a very non-linear fashion. What were the challenges involved with making sure everything came together while avoiding confusion?
Hcp: It is because I have considered the view of slasher fans; those audiences will be impatient and anxious to wait for killing scenes. This is always a typical dilemma in slasher films. So I cannot handle this film like any other drama patterns. I want audiences to enjoy watching the whole journey with me. Therefore, I decided to tell the story in a non-linear narrative fashion when I start writing the script. I tried to weave the killing and violent scenes in almost every ten minutes in the film.

One of the more visceral performances recently in horror is that of Sarah Butler, who plays Jennifer Hills in the controversial remake of I Spit on Your Grave (review here). The Film:
Under its original and to me, preferred title of Day of the Woman, Meir Zarchi’s cult classic is a product of just one man, and no it’s not Roger Ebert. I’m fully certain that if Jerry Gross, a prominent grindhouse version of William Castle, did not re-title the film to the more eye-catching, ear-perking, vile I Spit On Your Grave, this film would have not been discussed as thoroughly as it is.
Because the film really isn’t well-made, despite what the pure intentions of Zarchi were, he pulls the rug from under its potentials feet with his meandering pacing and lack-a-dazed editing. There’s plenty of scenes that go on for far too long, either ending on an off-note after a dialogue exchange or showing ever character walk from one point on the set to the next. Plus, outside of Camille Keaton, the acting is very stiff.

Last year’s Fantasia Film Festival brought with it a remake of one of the most notorious exploitation flicks ever, the rape-revenge horror movie I Spit On Your Grave. We survived the screening and recorded this show back in July after attending the World Premiere. Since the DVD was released this week, I felt it would be a good time to post this show again. Listen in and find out if we think either version is actually any good, or just more cheap trash. Also on this show we discussed the Robert Rodriguez / Nimrod Antal, sequel/reboot to the once-popular Predator franchise, simply titled Predators.
