- 50The Associated PressThe Associated PressDoesn't deliver the chills it should, but leaves an uneasy feeling. [26 Oct 1990]
- Nagging thoughts are not supposed to arise in horror pictures—last summer Mr. Winner predicted that this picture would be extremely horrifying — but The Sentinel has long stretches where there is nothing to do but notice things.
- Whereas Tod Browning showed the warm humanity of such people in FREAKS (1932), Winner cruelly exploits their handicaps for the purpose of repulsing his audience. This alone makes the film detestable.
- 0Time OutTime OutA film which plagiarises so brazenly - and so badly - that it seems like little more than a pile of out-takes from recent supernatural successes.
