Cinematically speaking, spiders are having a miniature moment. On April 12, 2024, fans of creature features were treated to Kiah Roache-Turner's "Sting," a film about an alien spider that grows to an enormous size and terrorizes the denizens of a run-down apartment building. Then, on April 26, the United States was granted access to Sébastien Vanicek's "Infested" (French title: "Vermines"), a film about many spiders that grow to enormous sizes and terrorize the denizens of a run-down apartment building. These two films, of course, came hot on the heels of the February release of "Madame Web," the best Spider-Man-adjacent, non-Marvel-Cinematic-Universe-related mid-budget clairvoyance caper film ever made.

Even in this age of instant YouTube gratification, movie trailers are a big deal. They get us hyped for an upcoming project by making promises that the eventual film will (hopefully) pay off. The best sizzle reels are even able to do this by giving a taste of things to come without ruining any surprises or plot twists. Think about the teaser for Alien with its cracking egg and unnerving siren sound, or the deft use of a choral version of Radiohead’s “Creep” in the classic promo for The Social Network. Both of those examples speak to the haunting nature of their movies while allowing space for the film to stand on its own down the road.
But some trailers do their job too well. Some trailers outdo the movies they advertise, sometimes because the film has a concept too shallow to sustain more than three minutes, and sometimes...

Everyone has done jobs they're not particularly proud of in their past. For actors, any of these past works are in the public eye, even if some go on to be largely forgotten. This includes the fan-favorite horror genre, from cheap, grindhouse and direct-to-video schlock to big-budget misfires. Beyond the quality of the movies, some actors just didn't have particularly pleasant experiences behind-the-scenes, leading them to distance themselves from their projects after completion. Every actor has a handful of films that they wish they hadn't signed on for, and with the benefit of hindsight, several have gone public with their regrets.
From established genre icons disappointed at their respective franchise returns to newcomers trying to get their start, horror has no shortage of movies Hollywood stars want off their resume. In a particular instance, one actor's horror movie experience led them to not only regret their participation, but quit acting altogether.

Tom Priestley, the British film editor whose work assembling the dueling-banjos sequence and hellish “squeal like a pig” attack in John Boorman’s Deliverance landed him an Oscar nomination, has died. He was 91.
His death on Christmas Day was only recently revealed.
Priestley also cut two other movies helmed by Boorman: Leo the Last (1970), which won the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival, and Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977).
He also edited The Great Gatsby (1974); Blake Edwards’ The Return of the Pink Panther (1975); That Lucky Touch (1975), starring Roger Moore; Voyage of the Damned (1976), featuring an all-star cast; and Roman Polanski’s Tess (1979).

As the ’80s came to a close, so too did the first wave of the slasher cycle. While they would continue to be produced into the next decade, 1989 was the last gasp of a dying genre. Returning franchises and hopeful upstarts alike struggled to make an impact. We all know you can never really kill a slasher, but it would take Scream‘s reinvention of the concept in 1996 to renew broad interest.
Cutting Class, another ’89 entry in the subgenre, marked the directorial debut — and, as it turned out, sole directorial effort — from Rospo Pallenberg, who notably co-wrote Excalibur, contributed uncredited rewrites on Exorcist II: The Heretic, and served as a “creative associate” on Deliverance. Despite his pedigree, Pallenberg did not write the script; that was the work of Steve Slavkin, who would go on to create Nickelodeon’s pivotal series Salute Your Shorts.

Warning: this post will contain spoilers for "The Exorcist: Believer."
As of this writing, actress Linda Blair has appeared as Regan MacNeil in three of the six extant "Exorcist" feature films. She was only about 13 when she appeared in William Friedkin's "The Exorcist" in 1973, and returned in 1977 to reprise her role in John Boorman's truly terrible "Exorcist II: The Heretic." Blair then sat out the three following sequels and prequels, returning in 2023 for a cameo in David Gordon Green's "The Exorcist: Believer." In that film, Regan only appeared at the very end of the film to comfort her elderly mother Chris (Ellen Burstyn) who has been blinded by a demon earlier in the picture. One might also want to count Blair's excellent comedic performance in the 1990 farce "Repossessed" as an official "Exorcist" appearance. Her character was named Nancy Aglet, but everything else in that film synchs up with Friedkin's original film.

The episode of The Test of Time covering Exorcist II: The Heretic was Written by Andrew Hatfield, Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Here at Test of Time, the whole idea of the show is to look at a classic, either objectively through critical praise, box office revenue, or even things like reputation or cult classic status. The three of us, writer Andrew, narrator Niki, and editor Mike like to discuss what we think about whatever the movie is and have fun with it. Shouldn’t this be able to work in reverse though? What about a movie that is seen as bad? Shouldn’t it be looked at through a different lens via time and what we know now? Maybe a bad movie stays a bad movie but what if a reappraisal alters the opinion?...

Now that David Gordon Green has sent another horror franchise to hell with The Exorcist: Believer, the time is right this Halloween for Awfully Good Movies to tackle one of the most awfully good sequels ever made… Exorcist II: The Heretic!
While the late William Friedkin and William Peter Blatty were hellbent against any follow-ups to their seminal horror classic, the suits at Warner Bros. felt otherwise and rolled camera on a follow-up four years later from another prestige filmmaker, John Boorman, despite Boorman passing on the first film and calling it a “repulsive” tale about “child abuse”. So instead, Linda Blair returns as Regan MacNeil one last time to fight the satanic demon nipping at her heels once more, thanks to a mind synchronization device that is just the tip of this sequel’s deeply insane iceberg.

Taylor Swift has been garnering the lion's share of attention at the box office over the last couple of weeks, with her blockbuster "Eras Tour" concert film topping the charts for two weekends in a row. Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese's latest, "Killers of the Flower Moon," had a massive global rollout this past weekend, resulting in a $44 million debut for the master filmmaker. But "The Exorcist: Believer" has been -- somewhat quietly -- chugging right along and has now passed a pretty major milestone. Director David Gordon Green's revival of the legendary horror franchise has passed the $100 million mark worldwide. That's good, even if the overall picture is still a bit murky. We'll get to that.
First, let's look at the smaller picture, focusing specifically on this movie and what it's managed to do thus far. "Believer" has earned $107.6 million worldwide through three weekends, per The Numbers, including $5.7 million in its most recent frame.

Over the weekend, David Gordon Green’s legacy sequel The Exorcist: Believer passed a big milestone at the worldwide box office, officially crossing the $100 million landmark.
Worldwide, The Exorcist: Believer has thus far scared up a total of $107.5 million in its 17 days of release, $54.2 million of which was made here in the United States.
For the sake of comparison, Gordon Green’s Halloween Ends, the final part of a trilogy of legacy sequels, finished its worldwide run with $104.3 million last Halloween season.
The reported production budget for The Exorcist: Believer was in the ballpark of $30 million, meaning it’s likely turning a profit in theaters. The catch? Universal spent $400 million acquiring the rights to The Exorcist, so it’s a bit complicated to measure the success of this one.

“The Exorcist” is, rightfully, heralded as one of the greatest, scariest films of all time. And in the 50 years since its 1973 release, filmmakers have tried, repeatedly, to recapture the magic that made the original film so special, to mixed results.
The latest attempt is “The Exorcist: Believer,” from director David Gordon Green, which returns Ellen Burstyn to the franchise for the first time since 1973 and focuses on a new phenomenon – synchronized possession. It’s meant to be the first of a new trilogy of films. And its release (it’ll be on PVOD on October 24) is enough to have us look back at the entire franchise thus far. Which films are scary good and which are ones that you’d rather spider-walk down the stairs to get away from? Read on to find out.

There's no question that the moviegoing experience has changed since the "The Exorcist" became a landmark cultural event when it was released the day after Christmas in 1973. Anyone that waltzed right in to see "The Exorcist: Believer" in theaters this October would have been shocked by the long lines snaking around the block to see the controversial original when it took the world by storm almost 50 years ago. It's unlikely that any other film will ever match that particular watershed moment in horror ever again.
"The Exorcist" marked the first time a genre film had ever received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. Notably, the entire production garnered 10 nominations, winning two for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound. In the decades since its release, "The Exorcist" has retained its well-deserved status as one of the scariest movies ever made, having left an indelible mark on generations of unassuming spectators that...

People have come around on "The Exorcist III" in a pretty big way. For a while, it was just the hardest of the hardcore horror nerds stepping up to defend the sequel, much like they did with the wild curveball that was "Halloween 3: Season of the Witch." Both of those movies have been reevaluated and carry substantial fanbases at this point, but it was a long struggle.
"Exorcist III" is a particularly fascinating movie because there were a lot of power struggles during the making of the movie that resulted in different cuts, alternate endings, and a near-takeover by the studio in the wake of lukewarm test screening reviews. This struggle started at the very beginning when the original book's author (and the first film's screenwriter) William Peter Blatty insisted on not only writing, but directing the second sequel.

An Exorcist sequel being poorly received isn’t anything new. Aside from the original film and The Exorcist III, these are not very popular films, with Exorcist II: The Heretic often coming up as one of the worst sequels ever made. (You can see our ranking of the Exorcist movies Here.) So the fact that the newly released The Exorcist: Believer (our review can be read at This Link) isn’t going over well with critics or the general audience isn’t much of a surprise. It is, however, a disappointment for Universal Pictures, since they and the Peacock streaming service forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a new trilogy of Exorcist sequels from Blumhouse Productions and director David Gordon Green, a team the studio and streamer had just worked with on a trilogy of Halloween sequels. According to The Hollywood Reporter,...

Director David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer is set to be the first film in a planned trilogy from Blumhouse and Universal, part of a $400 million deal to bring the franchise back to life on the big screen. But after the box office under-performance of Believer, and reviews slamming the film almost across the board, are those original plans still in place?
Last we heard, The Exorcist: Believer will first be followed by The Exorcist: Deceiver, which has already been dated for theatrical release on April 18, 2025. We assumed David Gordon Green would return to direct all three movies in the franchise – much like he did with Blumhouse’s recent Halloween trilogy – but that may not actually end up being the case.
In a new chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Gordon Green casts doubt on those expectations.

There’s a new Exorcist movie in theatres now, The Exorcist: Believer (read our review Here), and for the first time in the franchise Ellen Burstyn reprises the role of Chris MacNeil, the character she played in the 1973 classic The Exorcist. Her presence has been a major selling point in the marketing of this movie – but there’s another returning cast member who makes a brief appearance in the film. We heard months ago that Linda Blair (who was also in Exorcist II: The Heretic) would be showing up in The Exorcist: Believer, and during an interview with People magazine director David Gordon Green talked about reuniting Burstyn and Blair for “a beautiful moment”.
Green told People, “It was just a really special moment to be a part of that reunion, to be a part of that legacy, the connection that’s so monumental that the two of those performers have.

The legacy sequel, the first film in a planned trilogy of movies, topped the box office here in the United States, scaring up $27.2 million in its debut weekend across 3,663 theaters.
Worldwide, The Exorcist: Believer debuted to $45 million, a number that exceeds the reported $30 million production budget of the new movie. But there’s some fine print to that.
The catch? Universal spent $400 million acquiring the rights to The Exorcist, the studio banking on big box office numbers to make the investment worthwhile. It’s likely they hoped to replicate the success of Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy, but that film debuted to $76 million here in the States back in 2018 – almost three times the US debut of Believer. And Halloween 2018, which cost just $10 million to produce,...

Even as The Exorcist: Believer gets panned by critics and looks to be one of the craziest gambles ever by a movie studio – Universal shelled out $400 million for the rights – director David Gordon Green may avoid helming the rest of the planned trilogy. But his decision may have less to do with its reception than just how he operates.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, David Gordon Green said it’s quite possible that he’ll get sucked into another project instead of directing more Exorcist movies. “My intention is just to start making things, and as those plans come together, if I find myself in that [The Exorcist: Deceiver] director’s chair, I’d be thrilled… But right now, I’m navigating it from a story perspective and looking at my realities of life as I pivot.” He added, “One of the things that’s been really great between these...

The Exorcist is my choice for the best horror movie of all time. Some may say Rosemary’s Baby or The Shining or Night of the Living Dead, but as a good Catholic boy, nothing has ever gotten under my skin the way William Friedkin’s original did. But, with great success comes the desire for Hollywood to make a hit into a franchise, but Friedkin was not a franchise director. He famously turned down French Connection II, but the studio, perhaps noticing how the second French Connection turned out decently, decided to go ahead and turn it into a franchise. Still, the results, with one notable exception were a disaster. So without any further adieu, here’s our list of Exorcist movies ranked – from worst to best.
Exorcist II: The Heretic

Ever since Father Merrin and Father Karras entered Regan MacNeil's bedroom to perform an exorcism at the conclusion of 1973's "The Exorcist," the endings to each entry within the "Exorcist" franchise have been a point of controversy and contention. In the first film's instance, the priests losing their lives during the exorcism made a lot of audience members and critics confused as to the message of the movie, with writer William Peter Blatty observing that "at that point in the movie, most of the audience is a little out of it." Blatty would run into other ending issues while making "Exorcist III" in 1990, where he was forced to reshoot and add an exorcism sequence into a film that was never intended to have one. As for what's going on during the hectic finales of "Exorcist II: The Heretic," "Exorcist: The Beginning," and "Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist,...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “The Exorcist: Believer,” now playing in theaters.
After 50 years, “The Exorcist” franchise is back with “The Exorcist: Believer,” and it returns with some familiar faces.
It was announced early on that Ellen Burstyn, who played Chris MacNeil in the original “Exorcist,” would reprise her role in “The Exorcist: Believer,” which is the start of a brand new trilogy. All three movies will be helmed by director David Gordon Green, who recently rebooted the “Halloween” franchise with its own trilogy and brought back horror icon Jamie Lee Curtis to star.
It seemed inevitable that Green would bring back some of the legacy characters for his new “Exorcist” trilogy, and there was one surprise cast member that wasn’t announced ahead of time: Linda Blair, who played possessed preteen Regan MacNeil in the original “Exorcist.”

If it wasn't for William Friedkin's masterpiece, "The Exorcist," modern horror as we know it today simply wouldn't exist. There are a handful of properties that horror fans view as sacred, and "The Exorcist" is certainly one of them. Then again, John Carpenter's "Halloween" exists on a similar pedestal, and director David Gordon Green not only created a legacyquel trilogy but managed to bring back final girl Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) to connect it to the first film. Now, Green is returning to the world of "The Exorcist," disregarding the canon of sequels and the prequel with "The Exorcist: Believer." The tale sees two young friends, Angela (Lidya Jewett) and Katherine (Olivia O'Neill), simultaneously possessed by demonic forces. Their families are of different backgrounds and faiths, but must now work together to try and save their girls. Single dad...

The franchise’s first movie in 20 years, The Exorcist: Believer is now playing in theaters nationwide, the first film in a planned trilogy of legacy sequels from Universal, Blumhouse, and Morgan Creek, and director David Gordon Green (Halloween). The film opened in many theaters last night for Thursday previews, and the first box office numbers have arrived.
The Exorcist: Believer scared up $2.85 million on Thursday night here in the United States, opening last night in 3,050 theaters. It expands to 3,663 theaters beginning today.
Deadline notes that the film is “on its way to a potential high $20M to $30M.”
For the sake of comparison, the well-received Saw X sliced into $2 million last Thursday night, and the film went on to make $18.3 million across its opening weekend. So it’s pretty safe to expect that The Exorcist: Believer will make its way to at least $20 million in the coming days.

A handful of the faithful and the pious might have been able to tell you what an exorcist was, or what they did, before the early 1970s. After William Friedkin’s blockbuster adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s bestselling horror novel hit screens in 1973, however, the term instantly became part of the cultural lexicon. Suddenly, everyone knew about priests who supposedly specialized in dealing with demonic possessions; there were reports that churches were getting dozens of calls from congregation members requesting (or claiming to need) the ancient ritual after the movie became a sensation.

In William Friedkin's 1973 adaptation of William Peter Blatty's "The Exorcist," the film opens not on the possession of 12-year-old Regan MacNeil, but on Catholic priest and archaeologist Father Merrin (Max von Sydow), who is on a dig in Northern Iraq. He comes across a medallion of Saint Joseph, as well as an idol representing the demon Pazuzu. Fans of the film "The Exorcist II: The Heretic" will know that this is representative of the demon that will later possess Regan. According to Babylonian and Assyrian myth, Pazuzu is a wind demon, and his presence in the opening indicates that Merrin has dealt with Pazuzu before.
But with this desert setting, this scene also implies that there's something foreign — other, about this statue and medallion. Almost as if the intrusion of artifacts from the Middle East is truly responsible for...

Ellen Burstyn is busier than she has ever been and she has an idea why.
During a recent conversation with her Law and Order: Organized Crime co-star Christopher Meloni for Interview magazine, the 90-year-old actress said she finds it “so bizarre” how many roles she has landed in the past few years.
“I turn 91 in December and I’m busier than I can ever remember being at any point in my career,” she quipped. “And I don’t understand it at all. I mean, what’s all this stuff about ageism in Hollywood? How did I get left out of it?”
When Meloni asked why she thinks her acting career has seen such a boom, Burstyn responded, “I don’t know, except possibly that everybody else who could play those parts has already died, so I’m the only actress still standing who can play the great-grandmother or something.”

This weekend sees just one new wide theatrical release as The Exorcist: Believer hits screens to kick off the month of October in spooky fashion. Director David Gordon Green is following his Halloween model and creating a direct sequel to the original 1973 classic while ignoring the other sequels. That model worked out for the director with 2018’s Halloween as that film managed a solid $76.2 million opening on its way to a $159.3 million domestic total, which helped reinvigorate the franchise. Unfortunately, Green decided to make two more Halloween films after that, and the results were, quite frankly, not good.
The release date for The Exorcist: Believer was originally next week, but if you can believe it, the devil is actually afraid of Taylor Swift as when the release date of her Era’s Tour movie was announced, Blumhouse wisely moved up the release date, vacating their carefully planned Friday The 13th release.

There are three types of Exorcist sequel: the instantly forgettable, the memorably awful and The Exorcist III. The latest installment, directed by David Gordon Green and co-produced by Blumhouse, is not as miserably generic as the naughties prequel (either version – there’s two), but nor is it the interesting misfire of William Peter Blatty’s 1990 threequel (either version – there’s two). And thankfully it’s not the car crash of Exorcist II: The Heretic. It has elements of all of those in both its strengths and weaknesses, however, and ultimately suffers the same central issue they all do: it’s standing in the shadow of a masterpiece, and it can’t stop pointing at it.
Having had reasonable success sequalising Halloween with Jamie Lee Curtis, Green has been given the keys to one of the horror cinema’s unholy grails: a trilogy marking 50 years of the late Bill Friedkin’s The Exorcist.

Whatever one wants to say about John Boorman’s absolutely maniacal and much-maligned Exorcist II: The Heretic, it certainly isn’t unimaginative. By contrast, David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer very much is. The film, written by Green and Peter Sattler, is a mélange of tired normcore horror tropes indistinguishable from any film in the Conjuring universe. It even fails to address the series’s most basic themes in any truly meaningful way beyond a conviction-less “can’t we all just get along” subtext regarding the divide between America’s secular population and religious conservatives.
The film’s cold open in Haiti hints at a unique, voodoo-tinged—that is, non-Catholic—take on the franchise’s fascination with crisis of faith. But Haiti turns out to just be a random place to witness Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.) struggling to make a very difficult choice between saving his injured wife or his unborn daughter,...

The sequels — or, in two cases, prequels — to “The Exorcist” have all been unqualified turkeys. There is now a movement at hand to declare that John Boorman’s crackpot insect-swarm fantasia “Exorcist II: The Heretic” (1977) was some sort of misunderstood masterpiece, but that’s an act of revisionism every bit as loony tunes as “Heaven’s Gate” revisionism.
That said, the “Exorcist” genre has never left the culture. It has spawned successful pieces of claptrap, like “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” (2005), whose opening-weekend gross of $30 million in the dead zone of early September was more shocking than anything in the film. Fifty years ago, the very essence of William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist” was its obscenely eruptive, pea-soup-in-the-face, borderline-demonic-child-porn shock value. The film marked nothing less than the birth of extreme culture, and we’ve never looked back. It also influenced the rise of the Evangelical movement, since if Satan was now in our face,...

There’s been a shocking amount of horror movies released in August and September. Now that it’s October, it’s going to seem far more appropriate, with the month starting off with a doozie. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Way back in 1973, William Peter Blatty‘s 1971 novel, “The Exorcist,” was adapted into a movie by the late William Friedkin, becoming a huge theatrical phenomenon that is still thought of as one of the scariest horror movies ever made. It introduced many Americans to the idea of possession and exorcism, making household names of Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn, both who received Oscar nominations. The movie received 10 bids total, winning for Blatty’s screenplay and the sound.

It's clear that writer/director David Gordon Green and his co-screenwriter Peter Sattler had to fight an uphill battle when making a sequel to William Friedkin's 1973 film "The Exorcist" in 2023. Not only did the filmmakers have to remain cognizant of what narrative ground the four or five previous films in the series had already covered (more on that number below), but they had to somehow rise above the thousands of "Exorcist" knockoffs that have arisen in the last 50 years to provide a fresh take on the material. No easy feat, seeing as how the Tubi library, as of this writing, currently has 49 films with "Exorcist" or "Exorcism" in the title. Apart from "Alien" and "Emmanuelle," "The Exorcist" may be one of the most imitated films in cinema history.
To address the "Exorcist" sequels, Green merely employed the same tactic as he did with his "Halloween" movies: ignore them entirely and reboot the story.

In the long history of horror films since the dawn of cinema, it would be hard to imagine any of them quite having the particular impact of 1973’s The Exorcist, which became the first horror film to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar along with nine other nominations including Best Actress for Ellen Burstyn. It eventually won two Academy Awards: for William Peter Blatty’s screenplay based on his 1971 novel, and for the bone-chilling sound work. When I saw it as a young kid in its original incarnation at the National Theatre in Westwood (now no longer existing), there were lines like you have never seen wrapping completely around the block. Warner Bros even put a nurse on duty in the lobby for those who passed out — no mere gimmick because it actually happened.

Universal/Blumhouse/Morgan Creek’s The Exorcist: Believer will continue horror’s head-spinning roll at the autumn box office with a $30M-$36M domestic start at 3,600 locations.
Currently, the R-rated reboot/sequel is trending demo-wise like The Nun 2, which saw a $32.6M opening, meaning it’s great with the 18-34 demographic, Hispanic and Latino audiences as well as older guys. Nun 2 skewed a tad more female at 52%, and it’s expected that this David Gordon Green-directed Exorcist installment will be around an even split as well. Universal will have Imax and Plf screens with previews starting Thursday at 5 p.m. We hear production cost of The Exorcist: Believer is $30M before P&a.

I don't throw the word "iconic" around willy-nilly, but I think it's fair to say Linda Blair's performance in "The Exorcist" is iconic. Blair didn't have an easy task; she had to go through hell to portray a possessed kid, shouting foul language and undergoing heavy make-up as young Regan MacNeil, a 12-year-old possessed by the demon Pazuzu.
Well, there's a new "Exorcist" movie on the way — "The Exorcist: Believer." The film, helmed by David Gordon Green, brings back Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil, Regan's mother. But what about Blair? She was definitely on set — as an advisor. Speaking with Total Film, Green confirmed that Blair helped the newly possessed kids — played by Lidya Jewett and Olivia O'Neill — learn the ropes about getting demonic.
"We were really lucky to have Linda," Green said. "The hardships she faced during the production and after the production were certainly headlines and had an effect on her.

Exclusive: After Universal decided to go early with The Exorcist: Believer, the Blumhouse/Morgan Creek sequel reboot is eyeing a $30M+ opening on tracking, Deadline has learned from sources.
Currently we hear the R-rated movie is great with women under 25 in terms of first choice and unaided awareness, and that it’s looking similar to Paramount/Spyglass’ 2022 Scream which debuted to $30M.
Even if Exorcist: Believer opens in the high $20Ms, Uni/Blumhouse/Morgan Creek can still easily declare that it’s a record opening for the franchise. While the legendary pic’s heyday was in 1973 with the original being ultimately grossing a lifetime of $233M stateside, box office opening weekends weren’t recorded nationally at that point in time by the industry. 1990’s Exorcist III opened to $9.3M,...

"The Exorcist" remains one of the most frightening and intense horror films to this day. Even after 50 years, time has done little to diminish its power to shock and terrify audiences. Based on the popular novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty, director William Friedkin's "The Exorcist" was a massive hit among moviegoers who were thrilled by its story of a sweet young girl getting possessed by a demon who forces her to commit all kinds of obscene and horrible acts.
Despite the positive response from audiences and critics alike, the film also generated considerable controversy for its graphic nature and religious themes, with some even claiming that there was an evil in the celluloid itself. Still, all of the wild stories only added to the movie's legacy, further cementing its place in cinema history.
Because the original 1973 film gets all the attention, it's easy to forget...
