The entertainment offered at a White House Correspondents Dinner is always graded on a curve, and it deserves to be.
The President (when the White House is occupied by someone who can take a joke and shows up) is never going to get offers from the Main Room at Caesar’s Palace the morning after his after-dinner set; and the professional comic (almost always late-night-connected) is aware he/she is telling jokes to a group not exactly sure when or how much to laugh.
That tends to make it hard to induce truly explosive laughs.
Colin Jost had the additional challenge last night of performing slightly out of his element: his jokes on the “Weekend Update” segment of Saturday Night Live are almost always backed by some joke-enhancing illustration. No graphics available in the Washington Hilton ballroom.
Most of the comic performers who have headlined the dinner have later said...

Protesters attempted to shame journalists and politicos heading to the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday into skipping the event in solidarity with the many journalists who have lost their lives in Gaza since Israel began its war on the territory.
For some attendees, the protests on the way in may have been the only time they heard about those journalists killed in Gaza — unless they were listening very closely. The slain journalists in Gaza were mentioned one time on stage, according to transcripts of the event, when NBC News...

The annual White House Correspondents Dinner may be dubbed the inside-the-beltway “Nerd Prom” in some circles. Still, this year’s soirée, which took place on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, was the hottest ticket in the nation’s capital — maybe the entire nation — as President Joe Biden and the First Lady sat alongside the Hollywood elite and senior government officials mingled with actors, rappers and rockers.
They were all gathered to toast free speech and watch the president and Saturday Night Live Colin Jost roast Donald Trump, the state of the media, and in a common theme of the night, the commander-in-chief’s age.
Before the event began, hundreds of protesters had gathered outside the Hilton in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington to confront attendees and encourage journalists to boycott the event. Hollywood stars, journalists and prominent politicians were met with a crowd of protesters of the Israel-Hamas war outside Saturday’s White House Correspondents Dinner.
There has been growing public discord over the war and President Joe Biden’s handling of the conflict, as well as mainstream media’s coverage of it.
This year’s event at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. — where the dinner has been held for decades — is headlined by Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost, with several stars also in attendance, including Chris Pine, Molly Ringwald, Questlove and Rachel Brosnahan. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are also at the dinner.
However, attendees were greeted by demonstrators holding banners and chanting “Free, free Palestine” and calls for a “ceasefire” as they arrived, according to videos posted on social media. At one point, protesters also dropped a Palestinian flag out of one of the Washington Hilton’s windows.

Washington — “You look beautiful in your blood-stained gown,” a protester shouted at a finely dressed woman, opulent in heels and done up to perfection as she made her way to the Washington Hilton, the site of this year’s annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday, April 27.

You had to hold on ’til the end.
“Saturday Night Live” comedian Colin Jost delivered a mixed bag of Trump zingers, media jokes and Biden age wisecracks in front of a demanding crowd Saturday at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, but it took him until the last of his remarks to fully charm the assemblage of journalists and politicos who came to hear him roast the President and the Washington press corps.
Jost finished his remarks by telling President Joe Biden about his 95-year-old grandfather, a longtime fireman in Staten Island, N.Y, who voted Democrat in the 2020 presidential election even though that borough of New York City is known to favor Republicans.
“He voted for you, and the reason that he voted for you is because you’re a decent man,” Jost told Biden. “My grandpa voted for decency and decency is why we’re all here tonight.

With the back-to-back blockbuster combo of "Jaws" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," Steven Spielberg had firmly established himself as a sui generis Hollywood visionary when, in 1978, he chose to make "1941." Most people consider this a near-disaster of a decision. The anarchic World War II comedy, set in panicked Southern California in the immediate wake of the assault on Pearl Harbor, was a 180-degree turn from the spirited adventure and childlike yearning of his previous two films. It was silly, vulgar and more than a little mean. And, most audaciously, it was making light of the country's understandably crazed reaction to an attack that killed thousands of U.S. military personnel.
Spielberg's co-conspirators in this juvenile affront to one of the worst days in 20th century American history were screenwriters John Milius, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale — and, really, all you have to do is watch "Used Cars...

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to play ping-pong with Prince you’ve come to the right place. On this week’s episode of 20 Questions on Deadline, Jimmy Fallon tells a frankly bizarre story about the “Purple Rain” legend and his penchant for table tennis.
We also gain insight into Keith Urban’s sense of humor as Fallon reveals a prank he and Urban once played on Nicole Kidman at an event, plus, the shame-inducing ‘date’ Fallon went on with her years ago.
All these anecdotes seem especially apropos, given that Fallon is celebrating ten years as host of The Tonight Show. In celebration, NBC will air a two-hour special on May 14th, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: 10th Anniversary Special.
In the podcast, Fallon reminisces about the time Harrison Ford pierced his ear, the experience of riding a rollercoaster with Kevin Hart, and trying to...

Exclusive: No decision has been made official, but sources tell Deadline that New Line is the favorite to land the package that is based on the biography The Chris Farley Show with Paul Walter Hauser attached to play the legendary comedian. The pitch is based on the book by Farley’s brother Tom Farley Jr. and Tanner Colby and will be adapted by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber with Josh Gad directing. Lorne Michaels, who found and cast Farley in Saturday Night Live in the ’90s, is producing through his Broadway Video.
Insiders say the family has given their blessing to the project. The studio had no comment.
The film would tell the story of one of the great comic actors of his generation. Getting his start in the second heyday of Saturday Night Live, where Farley would join an ensemble of all-time SNL greats including Adam Sandler, David Spade,...

As this year’s president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, NBC News senior White House Kelly O’Donnell will preside over one of the biggest evenings in D.C. — a mix of politicos, media types and celebrities airing live across C-span and other networks.
But the issues that a Whca president routinely deals with range from the weighty, like pushing for media access to the president and promoting the role of journalists in a free society; to the less earth-shaking but still important, like coping with plumbing issues in the tight confines of the press area of the West Wing.
O’Donnell on Thursday marked 30 years with NBC News, a tenure that has included covering four presidential administrations, seven election cycles and numerous major events, including embedding with troops in Iraq.

Sydney Sweeney became a successful producer at a young age when she co-produced her smash hit rom-com Anyone But You. The actress proved her business savvy by crafting a highly specialized marketing campaign for the film. This unexpectedly included reportedly deliberately teasing the public regarding linkup rumors with co-star Glen Powell.
It was a bold strategy built upon months of rumors swirling around Sweeney and Powell. Social media was agog with speculations, even in the months following the release of the movie. Much digital ink was spilled dissecting the interactions between the stars during promos and in behind-the-scenes features. In the end the tactic paid off, and the marketing team behind the movie proved they knew what they were doing with the film’s publicity campaign.

It’s a long-standing love/hate relationship: Late-night TV and the White House Correspondents Dinner. It’s love because the reporters want to juice the event with laughs; but the romance sometimes goes sour because they often have trouble deciding: “Is that funny?”
The result? Whichever late-night star accepts the invitation to interrupt the din of political chatter and networking to deliver an array of topical jokes to a massive ballroom with poor acoustics and occasional clattering tableware is going to be hyper-aware that killing in this venue may refer not just to your act but also to your career.
So: Welcome Colin Jost!
For sure, the co-anchor of Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” is a totally logical choice, and his performance on this live Saturday night stage is something to look forward to. Nielsen live-plus-seven-day data for Ryan Gosling’s Saturday Night Live episode has arrived, and the results are positive.
With Gosling as host, and Chris Stapleton as musical guest, the April 13, 2024 edition of SNL delivered 7,510,000 linear viewers. That represents the show’s largest total linear audience since Dec. 10, 2022, when Steve Martin and Martin Short were co-hosts, and Brandi Carlile was the musical guest. Additionally, the Gosling-led episode delivered 1,727,000 P18-49 linear viewers, the show’s largest P18-49 linear audience since Oct. 14, 2023, when Pete Davidson hosted the Season 49 premiere.
The Gosling-SNL story is even stronger if one takes into account episode viewing across digital platforms: 8.9 million total viewers and 2.64 million P18-49 viewers. Not only do the 8.9 million and 2.64 million represent season highs for the show, but the 8.9 million is SNL’s largest cross-platform audience since Dec. 11, 2021, when Billie Eilish was both the host and musical guest.

The April 13 Saturday Night Live, with host Ryan Gosling and musical guest Chris Stapleton, had several talked-about moments, from Gosling’s monologue with his Fall Guy co-star Emily Blunt to a Beavis and Butt-head sketch that caused cast member Heidi Gardner to break down laughing. Taylor Swift also gave a thumbs-up to Gosling and Blunt’s Barbenheimer-themed reworking of “All Too Well.”
The water-cooler nature of the episode paid off in the ratings, as SNL hit some of its best numbers of recent years. After a week of cross-platform viewing, the episode drew 8.9 million viewers and a 2.0 rating (equivalent to about 2.64 million people) in the adults 18-49 demographic, both of which are season highs.
More than season highs, in fact: SNL had its best showing in total viewers since Dec. 11, 2021, when Billie Eilish was both the host and musical guest. The show also hit its best 18-49 rating since Nov.

As host of the April 13 episode, Ryan Gosling brought “Saturday Night Live” its biggest Peacock audience ever when accounting for seven days of viewership.
While an exact number of Peacock viewers is not available, the episode’s seven-day total across all platforms is 8.9 million — up from the 1.7 million viewers who tuned in night-of. This comes from a combination of Nielsen’s measurement of linear viewers on NBC and NBCUniversal’s own data regarding streams on Peacock.
This represents the show’s best seven-day viewership since December of 2021, when Billie Eilish served as both host and musical guest. Additionally, the episode rose from 0.3 rating among adults age 18-49 on April 13 to a seven-day rating of 2.0, the show’s highest since Dave Chappelle hosted in November 2022 with Foo Fighters as musical guest.

Ryan Gosling is not a dumbass; heh heh, heh, heh heh heh, heh! Thanks in large part to a “Beavis and Butt-Head” sketch that went viral, Gosling’s “Saturday Night Live” episode is the most-watched “SNL” since late 2021.
Counting one week’s worth of delayed viewing (which is fine and normal but really helps when something goes viral) and all platforms, the April 13, 2024 telecast of “SNL” drew 8.9 million total viewers, according to NBC. That’s the most since Billie Eilish hosted the program on December 11, 2021.
The Gosling episode, for which he was promoting film “The Fall Guy,” is the most-watched “SNL” episode ever on Peacock. Gosling’s musical guest was Chris Stapleton.

Ryan Gosling attracted Saturday Night Live‘s biggest audience in years.
The actor’s April 13 episode, which also featured musical guest Chris Stapleton, drew 8.9M viewers after seven days, according to NBCUniversal. In the 18 to 49 demo, the episode is up to a 2.0 rating.
That’s the show’s largest seven-day audience since Billie Eilish hosted in December 2021, and it’s the best demo performance since Dave Chappelle’s last hosting gig in November 2022.
In terms of streaming, NBCU says Gosling now lays claim to the most-watched episode of Saturday Night Live ever on Peacock.

We live in a society that insists if you work hard, you can probably achieve the goals you've set for yourself. But "Problemista," the first feature film by writer and comedian Julio Torres, which is now in theaters worldwide, poses the question: is working hard always enough? Loosely based off of Torres's own immigration experience, the film follows Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador struggling to make his dream a reality in New York City who loses his job and desperately needs to secure a sponsor to stay in the States. Even after taking a freelance assistant gig with an erratic art critic named Elizabeth (played by Tilda Swinton), Alejandro (played by Torres) finds himself in one of the most relentless and nightmarish mazes of American bureaucracy - the US immigration system.

Steve Carell is ready for a vacation after lending his dulcet tones to Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 and John Krasinski’s upcoming family comedy If. Thankfully, Netflix has a plane ticket with Carell’s name on it, so long as he’s willing to join the cast of The Four Seasons, a forthcoming comedy series led by Tina Fey.
The Four Seasons, a retread of the 1981 Universal movie of the same name, is a co-creation between Fey, her 30 Rock co-star Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. Details about Carell’s character remain a mystery, though the cast list for Alan Alda’s 1981 comedy could provide some clues. In 1981’s The Four Seasons, three couples vacation together every season. After one couple divorces, feelings of betrayal and more spawn criticisms of one another, but the things that keep them together are stronger than those that might tear them apart. Alan Alda directed and wrote the 1981 version,...

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains minor spoilers for “The Fall Guy.”]
David Leitch’s “The Fall Guy” has it all. Drama, action, romance, Taylor Swift. As the film’s Super Bowl trailer delighted in telling potential audience members, the upcoming Ryan Gosling- and Emily Blunt-starring feature is packed with a little something for everyone. And, yes, that includes Gosling crying to Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well” during one of the film’s funniest (and most emotional) sequences, one that’s on full display in that second trailer.
But it wasn’t always going to be Swift’s song that made Gosling’s character cry. During a recent interview with producer Kelly McCormick (who is also Leitch’s wife), she revealed to IndieWire there was another choice on the table.
“It wasn’t actually [always going to be a Swift song], but it wasn’t going to be the song that we were playing [during shooting], because it was not right for their romance,” McCormick told IndieWire.

The Curse began with an actual curse, or at least the threat of one. When Nathan Fielder first moved from Canada to L.A. in 2009, a woman approached him on the street asking for a handout. He told her he had no money. She replied, “I curse you.”
That anecdote, described by Fielder to pal Benny Safdie, was the seed for one of the most startling and innovative shows in recent memory. Fielder, whose spins on reality TV in shows like HBO’s The Rehearsal have earned him a devoted fan base (Christopher Nolan among them), and Safdie (who, with brother and ex-directing partner Josh, made Uncut Gems) cooked up a bitter black comedy that in part skewered HGTV programming. The duo cast themselves as childhood friends — one of them, Asher Siegel (Fielder), a nebbish, budding reality star burdened with a micropenis — making a pilot about a couple trying to...

Dasha knew she had something special with “Austin” long before she created the viral line dance that’s been captivating audiences across social media. In fact, she says she knew it when the song was still a demo.
“People just started perking up and texting me,” Dasha tells Rolling Stone. “Just like, ‘Hey I heard this song and it’s insane!’ Everybody’s ears perked up, and I felt like everyone gave a shit about my music for the first time.”
At 24, Dasha — full name Dasha Novotny — is basking in the success of “Austin,...

When someone drops an F-bomb on Saturday Night Live, it’s generally pretty newsworthy. But for some viewers, “the ‘Gd’ term” is equally offensive.
That’s the lesson Brooke Germain, an editor at The Nevada Sagebrush, learned when she filed a Freedom of Information Act request to receive all complaints that the FCC had received about SNL going back to the start of 2023. She has since posted the full file to the public records platform MuckRock—and, well, there’s a common theme.
In January of 2023, Colin Jost joked on “Weekend Update” that while Joe Biden and Donald Trump were embroiled in very different classified document scandals, both “made Hillary Clinton want to blow her Goddamn brains out.”
A viewer from Cumming, Georgia, emailed the FCC:
“Please note watching Saturday Night Live 01/21-22/23 over the air on Wxia 11 Atlanta, Ga the ‘Gd’ term was used, and I am not ok with this to begin with.

Keep reading to find out more…“They were musicians. They weren’t actors,” Maya shared on the Armchair Podcast.
“My trajectory was, I wanted to go to New York, and I wanted to be on Saturday Night Live,” Maya explained. “I understand that drive to be somewhere else — forage in a new city and create my own path. But that’s a huge undertaking. I wasn’t like, ‘Oh my dad writes songs, that’s gonna make me a comedian.’ There was no direct line. I knew I had to get there myself.
