When Barbra Streisand and Jon Peters were interested in remaking A Star is Born in 1974, their first choice for John Howard Norman was Elvis Presley. Reportedly, the King of Rock and Roll was very interested in the role, but someone else held the key to Presley’s participation in the project. Who’s to blame for?
Elvis Presley was ‘hooked’ on the idea of remaking ‘A Star Is Born’
Barbra Streisand and Jon Peters met with Elvis Presley to discuss the project in early 1974. At the time, Presley was performing at Las Vegas’ Caesars Palace.
Presley hadn’t made a film since 1969’s Change of Habit. However, he was reportedly looking to return to the movie industry and wanted to be taken seriously as an actor. Therefore, the meaty role of a fading rock star greatly appealed to him.

Elvis Presley is best known for his music, but he had a substantial film career as well. He began acting in the 1950s and continued making movies all through the 1960s. Though not always critically successful, his films always drew audiences. This didn’t excite Elvis, though. He said that he never felt satisfied with his film career.
Elvis’ film career was a disappointment to him
Elvis said he initially viewed acting as just another job. Over time, though, he grew to care so much about it that it made him “physically ill” to not have any control over it.
“I didn’t have final approval on the script, which means that I couldn’t tell you, ‘This is not good for me,’” he said, per the book Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley by Peter Guralnick. “I don’t think anyone was consciously trying to harm me. It...

In 1975, Elvis Presley received an offer to act in the film A Star Is Born alongside Barbra Streisand. The opportunity excited him greatly. He hadn’t been in a movie since 1969’s Change of Habit and was growing bored of his endless schedule of performances. A new film could have reestablished him as an actor. Ultimately, though, when negotiations fell through, Elvis’ friend the singer hadn’t been sure he could pull off the role.
Elvis Presley reportedly didn’t think he would be a good fit in a film
In 1975, Streisand offered Elvis $500,000 and 10% of profits to star as rock star John Norman Howard in A Star Is Born. After the initial meeting with Streisand, Elvis’ friends recalled that he seemed excited about the part. The role was of a rock star whose career was on the decline. When Elvis Presley’s career took off in 1956, his love life did too. He was a charming, good-looking superstar and people flocked to him everywhere he went. According to Elvis’ friend and bodyguard, the singer had multiple flings as he was traveling between cities to perform. His bodyguards said he was so charismatic that hardly anyone was immune to his advances.
Elvis Presley’s bodyguard said he left lovers behind everywhere he visited
As Elvis’ career gained traction, he traveled between cities for concerts. His bodyguard, Red West, said everything happened so fast that it was difficult to adjust.
“We never seemed to have time to absorb it all,” West said in the book Elvis: What Happened? by Steve Dunleavy. “We were all busier than a one-legged man in an a**-kicking contest. We were hitting town after town in very quick succession.”

Elvis Presley began to act in films in 1956 and would go on to fall for a significant number of his co-stars. He reportedly claimed that he slept with all his leading ladies but one. He struck out with his first co-star, though. While Elvis adored her, she wanted nothing romantic to do with him.
Elvis fell for a co-star on the set of his first movie
In 1956, Elvis made his film debut in Love Me Tender. He acted alongside Debra Paget, who transfixed Elvis. His bodyguard, Sonny West, even believed that Elvis tried to model Priscilla Presley after Paget.
“If you look at her in those earlier pictures, you will see she had a decided likeness to Priscilla Presley, whom he was soon to meet,” Sonny West said in the book Elvis: What Happened? by Steve Dunleavy. “She had black hair. When Elvis first met Priscilla he got her to dye her hair black.

Elvis Presley‘s “Rubberneckin'” was a hit in the 1960s and it became a hit again in the 2000s. A dance artist remixed Elvis’ “Rubberneckin'” in honor of his father and brought the track back to the chart. The remix worked great. However, it didn’t live up to a similar Elvis song that became a hit around the same time.
The success of Elvis Presley’s ‘A Little Less Conversation’ remix led to another remix
Elvis’ “A Little Less Conversation” had a second life in 2002 when Junkie Xl produced a remix of the track that appeared on the album Elvis: 30 #1 Hits. Junkie Xl’s rearrangement reached No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100, staying on the chart for nine weeks. The remix charted higher than the original song, which reached No. 69 and lasted on the chart for four weeks. Junkie Xl’s “A Little Less Conversation” became a classic rock favorite.

Elvis Presley‘s “Hound Dog” is one of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll‘s biggest songs. He still got sick of it. Priscilla Presley gave fans insight into Elvis’ state of mind after they divorced. She also revealed how Elvis’ mother’s death changed his view of life.
Elvis Presley didn’t want to be singing ‘Hound Dog’ when he was 40
In her 1985 book Elvis and Me, Priscilla reflected on the state of her ex-husband’s career following their divorce in 1973, when Elvis was 38. “His movie career was at a standstill, and he focused on Vegas appearances and touring. Elvis had trouble seeing himself ‘a forty-year-old man still shaking to ‘Hound Dog,”” she wrote. “He had other ambitions. He once talked of producing, even directing, but he never took steps to pursue either.”
For context, Elvis acted in a film for the last time in 1969, when he played a physician in Change of Habit.

While Elvis Presley was one of the most famous people of the 20th century, he didn’t often give interviews to reporters. He wanted whatever privacy he could get, which was very little given that fans often gathered outside his home. When Elvis did grant reporters interviews, they had to be careful about the types of questions they asked. When one reporter asked a seemingly straightforward question, Elvis immediately grew uncomfortable.
Elvis did not want to give a reporter much information
In 1969, reporter William Otterburn-Hall met Elvis on the set of Change of Habit. He was hoping to meet Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker, as well, but nobody seemed to know where he was. Before Otterburn-Hall spoke to Elvis, a publicist warned him not to ask any prying questions.
“You won’t probe too deep, will you?” the publicist asked, as Otterburn-Hall recalled in a piece for Rolling Stone. “This is just an informal chat,...

Elvis Presley had many leading ladies in his film career and he reportedly had an affair with nearly all of them. Elvis often had girlfriends or a wife as he shot movies. This did little to hinder him from pursuing his co-stars, though. His final onscreen love interest had no interest in his advances, though.
Elvis reportedly slept with all but 1 of his leading ladies
In 1969, Elvis starred in his final film, Change of Habit. His co-star was Mary Tyler Moore, who quickly became aware that Elvis had a crush on her.
“[Elvis] confessed right from the start that he’d had a crush on me since The Dick Van Dyke Show,” Moore wrote, per Express.
Nothing ever happened between them, though. Moore said she was the only one of Elvis’ leading ladies who didn’t have an affair with him.
“I was his last leading lady,” she told Ability Magazine.

Elvis Presley is most known for his rock and pop hits, but he also recorded some classic gospel songs. A major pop singer performed backup on one of Elvis’ gospel tracks. She also discussed attending religious services with the “Heartbreak Hotel” singer.

Darlene Love was a member of the girl group The Blossoms. “Agent Elvis,” the hand-drawn adult animated Netflix series from Sony Pictures Animation and directed by Fletcher Moules (“Entergalactic”), re-imagines Elvis Presley as a super cool spy in a wild, gory, drugged-out alternate reality. It crosses “Archer” with “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” putting the King square in the crosshairs of everyone from the Manson Family and Howard Hughes to Richard Nixon and Timothy Leary — all while retaining recognizable signposts from Presley’s life, from concert specials to his hatred of Robert Goulet.
There’s also an array of hilarious cameos, including Stanley Kubrick shooting a staged moon landing — guess who ends up in the space suit? — and a young George Lucas getting inspiration for the lightsaber from Hughes’ radioactive urine stream weapon. “Agent Elvis” is so meta that Baz Luhrmann even voices the director of Presley’s final film “Change of Habit.”

This article contains mild spoilers for "Agent Elvis."
One of the most exciting Netflix animated projects of 2023 just hit the platform. "Agent Elvis" is an animated adult action comedy that dares to ask the question: What if the King of Rock 'n' Roll was also an international super spy with a cocaine-using chimpanzee for a sidekick?
Besides the very "Archer"-inspired tone of the show's absurdist comedy and the blood-soaked action, the biggest draw of "Agent Elvis" is its mix of truth and fiction. The series takes a "Forrest Gump" approach to history, placing Elvis in historical events as he interferes with or changes what we think happened, while still following the timeline of events in Elvis' real life. This results in a sort of animated version of the fantastic "Legends of Tomorrow," as we see Elvis give George Lucas words of encouragement at the Altamont Free Concert, or kick...

Matthew McConaughey playing Elvis? Here’s the crazy new series, Agent Elvis, in which the legendary singer fights crime alongside his monkey with high levels of… testosterone.
In addition, the voices of Kaitlin Olson, Johnny Knoxville or Don Cheadle guarantee us a daring, very loutish – and quality – series.
About the Series
A series that will serve to reconcile some fans with the streaming network that, let’s face it, has everything and now gets into adult animation like Harley Quinn (HBO Max) and, with a similar style, takes us to Las Vegas to contemplate the eccentricities of this Elvis turned James Bond.
A hilarious series produced by none other than Priscilla Presley who was married to… you get the picture.
A lot of the Tarantino touch mixed with psychedelia.
Enjoy this very, very offbeat series aimed at an audience eager to live an experience… on the other side of the familiar dark side.

While Elvis Presley is best remembered for his music, the Memphis singer had an impressive career in Hollywood movies. Elvis starred in 31 feature films and two concert documentaries. Still, he has a lengthier filmography than many might realize, and his 26th movie, Stay Away, Joe, premiered in New York City 55 years ago today.

For nearly 40 years, Ed Asner was the answer to a great TV trivia question: Who is the only actor to win both drama and comedy acting Emmys for playing the same character? The legendary actor, who died Sunday at the age of 91, won three Emmys in the Seventies for playing curmudgeonly newsman Lou Grant on the classic workplace comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and another two for translating the role into its acclaimed one-hour drama spinoff Lou Grant. Edward Asner, known best for his iconic roles on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Lou Grant, passed away at the age of 91.
Asner has been a successful, working actor for the last 64 years, without a significant break in all that time.
Most recently seen in an episode of Grace and Frankie that Netflix dropped unexpectedly, Asner had seven projects in various stages of post-production and 11 further projects in the works.
As Lou Grant or Mr. Grant, as Mary Richards called him, Asner spanned two series, one a comedy and the other a drama.
Grant was the evening news producer on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, moving to his own headlining drama by taking a step down from his role as a TV producer to the city editor of the Los Angeles Tribune.

Billy Goldenberg, the Emmy-winning composer and songwriter, died Monday night at his home in New York City. He was 84.
Goldenberg wrote the themes for such 1970s TV series as “Kojak,” “Harry O” and “Rhoda,” composed the pilot scores for “Night Gallery” and “Columbo,” and won Emmys for the TV-movie “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” and miniseries “The Lives of Benjamin Franklin,” “King” and “Rage of Angels.”
He expanded his 1975 “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” song score, with lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman, into the score of the 1978 Broadway musical “Ballroom,” directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett of “A Chorus Line” fame. It earned eight Tony nominations including Best Musical.
Reminiscing Wednesday about their collaboration on “Ballroom,” Alan Bergman told Variety: “Billy was one of the rare composers who was also a dramatist. Lots of people can write melodies, but you could tell Billy the situation, what the characters were feeling,...

When Robert Redford cast Mary Tyler Moore in the pivotal role of Beth for his 1980 directorial debut, he was accused of stunt casting. Redford had purchased the rights to Ordinary People while the novel was still in galleys, having sparked immediately to the story about a seemingly perfect upper-crust family that’s torn apart after the elder son dies in a sailing accident, leaving behind his troubled younger brother. More established film actresses like Lee Remick and Ann-Margret were in contention for the role; meanwhile, Moore, though an undisputed champ of the small screen, hadn’t been in a movie since Elvis’ final appearance, 1969’s Change Of Habit (she played a nun). Casting Moore was a brave choice, and it paid off: It netted Moore her only Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win for Best Actress.

A TV icon for sure, star one of the best sitcoms of all time, but Mary Tyler Moore left a mark with her big screen work including her Oscar-nominated turn in the 1980 Best Picture winner Ordinary People. She co-starred with Charles Bronson in X-15, Elvis in a A Change Of Habit, Julie Andrews in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and played Ben Stiller’s mom in David O. Russel’s Flirting With Disaster. Her Ordinary People performance was wonderful and incredibly surprising at the time but it’s her TV work, from Happy Hotpoint, the Hotpoint Appliance elf in the mid-50’s, to The Dick Van Dyke Show to her winning three Emmys as Mary Richards on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The most unforgettable moment from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, out of dozens of contenders: Mary sits at the bar with her newsroom co-workers, drinking their sorrows away. They've had a grim day – her cranky boss Lou Grant just attended his ex-wife's wedding, while he's still reeling from the divorce, so the others tagged along for moral support. Pompous anchorman Ted Baxter tries to lighten the mood with a knock-knock joke. Lou growls, "Ted, this better be a pretty funny knock-knock joke. I lost a wife today." It's a godawful joke.

There have been many TV bios of Elvis Presley but Elvis, The Movie, the once-elusive 1979 feature starring Kurt Russell, was the first and is still the best. Spirituality in cinema has been expressed in various ways where the feel-good aspect of faith-based films are put to great use for emotional manipulation. The triumph and tragedy of religious themes in the movies have never been championed as much as when the protagonist at the helm is a loving nun. Film nuns come in all varieties: nurturing, helpful, complex, obstinate, crusading and flawed.

The popular perception of filmmaking is that it’s a meticulously planned enterprise in which every last possible contingency is considered and planned for; after all, when hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake, producers can’t afford to take risks or leave anything to chance.
Still, that doesn’t stop a few amusing coincidences slipping through the cracks, and while only occasionally potentially harmful to the productions at hand, they at least provide some unexpected food-for-thought regarding the actors who wound up in those roles.
Whether foreshadowing a dark future or simply drawing two unexpected forces together, these 10 casting coincidences are distinctly weird and certainly add an air of cool mystique to each of the projects they occurred in…

There have been many TV bios of Elvis Presley but Elvis, The Movie, the once-elusive 1979 feature starring Kurt Russell, was the first and is still the best. When Elvis died August 16 1978 at age 42, it sent shock waves around the world, comparable to the deaths of Princess Diana or Michael Jackson in later decades. A carnival atmosphere developed in Memphis as thousands of mourners gathered around the gates of Graceland and sales of Elvis. music skyrocketed. The 3-hour epic Elvis The Movie, produced by Dick Clark for the ABC network premiered 18 months later on February 11 1979 and, despite CBS airing Gone With The Wind the same night, was one of the highest rated made-for-television movies ever shown (it played theatrically on other parts of the world . in Japan it was called The Singer!). The script by Antony Lawrence, who had penned two Elvis movies earlier in his career (Paradise Hawaiin Style and...

Elvis Presley: Double Elvis (Ferus Type) Elvis Presley as a cowboy as seen by Andy Warhol. Warhol's Presley Portrait "Double Elvis (Ferus Type)" will be sold to the highest bidder at Sotheby's on May 9. The 1963 portrait, owned by a "private collector," is expected to sell for anywhere between $30-50 million. As per Sotheby's, this is the first "Double Elvis" to appear on the market since 1995. And to think I had no idea there had ever been more than one Elvis despite his myriad imitators. In truth, Warhol painted 22 images of Elvis Presley, nine of which belong to various museum collections. Presley starred in about 30 films, mostly flimsy musicals (e.g., Blue Hawaii, Harum Scarum, Kissin' Cousins) featuring minor leading ladies as his love interest. Exceptions include the Westerns Love Me Tender (1956), with Richard Egan and Debra Paget, and Flaming Star (1960), with Barbara Eden and Dolores del Rio; the...

Mary Tyler Moore Mary Tyler Moore speaks onstage during the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards broadcast on TNT/TBS from the Shrine Auditorium on January 29 in Los Angeles, California. Dick Van Dyke, with whom Moore had co-starred in The Dick Van Dyke Show in the early '60s, presented her with the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. (Photo by John Shearer/WireImage.) The 75-year-old Moore, who has suffered from a series of health ailments including diabetes and brain surgery to remove a benign tumor last year, looked quite frail while accepting her trophy. She was greeted by the longest standing ovation of the evening. Her acceptance speech was about how there were too many Mary Moores already registered with SAG back in the 1950s. As a result, she decided to use her father's middle name, Tyler, as part of her own show business moniker. Moore — whose television heyday was in...

The orphanage in Peter and Bobby Farrelly's upcoming "Three Stooges" movie is getting awfully crowded. Deadline reports Jennifer Hudson is set to play Sister Rosemary, joining Jane Lynch's Mother Superior and Larry David's Mother Mengele.
Now, don't get us wrong... Hudson is a great actress, and that Academy Award win for "Dreamgirls" was well-deserved. But her limited IMDb credits illustrate that she's still a little green. Julie Andrews, "The Sound of Music"
Speculation has it that Sister Rosemary is the sweet one to the orphaned stooges -- and what nun is better with children than Maria? She disarms petulance with song, something that will come easy to Hudson. The only drawback is that she's really only a nun for the first five minutes.
Carrie Fisher,...
