Kino Lorber has released Mario Bava’s “Roy Colt and Winchester Jack” (1970) in a handsome, restored Blu-ray edition as part of its extensive “Mario Bava Collection.” The disc will please devotees of the late Italian director, whose wide range of genre work is evident in this and the fifteen other Blu-rays that Kino Lorber has released in its series, from the celebrated Gothic trappings of “Black Sunday” (1960) to the Bond-era burlesque of “Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs” (1966). Bava is revered by his enthusiasts as one of the pre-eminent directors of horror and giallo in the 1960s Italian cinema, but like other workaday filmmakers in the busy European studios of the time, he made pretty much every kind of picture there was to make, riding successive surges of popularity for horror, sword-and-toga epics, westerns, thrillers, and sex comedies. “Roy...

When a filmmaker creates a number of movies that qualify for masterpiece status, it becomes nearly impossible to quantifiably conclude which one stands above the rest as his or her single greatest achievement. We have our favorites, of course, but can any of us really name which of Hitchcock’s films is his definitive best? Or Kurosawa’s? Or Spielberg’s? The same is true of Mario Bava, the great Italian director who made films across a number of genres but who is best known for his work in horror. How does one name a single “best” movie from the man responsible for Black Sunday and Blood and Black Lace and The Whip and the Body and Black Sabbath? It’s like naming a favorite child.
While his 1966 movie Kill, Baby... Kill! isn’t always named as being one of Bava’s best, it absolutely deserves to be part of the conversation and is,...

Laura Antonelli: 'Malizia' actress. Laura Antonelli: 'Malizia' sex symbol who led troubled life found dead (Note: This Laura Antonelli article is currently being revised and expanded.) Laura Antonelli, for a brief while an international star thanks to scandalous sex-themed movies such as Malizia and The Divine Nymph, and who later became enmeshed in scandal and personal turmoil, was found dead by her housekeeper on Monday morning, June 22, '15, at her home in Ladispoli, in the outskirts of Rome. Antonelli had reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack. She was 73. Long after her cinema heyday, in the early '90s Antonelli made headlines following a botched plastic surgery that left her face somewhat disfigured. Also at that time, she found herself accused of drug trafficking by Italian authorities. Both incidents led to lengthy, traumatizing judicial battles. From gym teacher to 'girl bomb' Born Laura Antonaz on Nov. 28, 1941, in Pula, in the then Italian province of Istria,...

Today is Vincent Price’s 104th Birthday! Price was born here in St. Louis on this date in 1911 and is the most iconic movie star to hail from our city. Price, who died October 25th 1993, was also a gourmand, author, stage actor, speaker, world-class art collector, raconteur, and all-around Renaissance man. Vincent Price was simply one of the most remarkable people of the 20th Century. Four years ago we had the opportunity to celebrate his 100th birthday and St. Louis was the place to do it. I teamed up with Cinema St. Louis to present Vincentennial, The Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, an event that lasted through much of the Spring of 2011. The following year Vincentennial won two coveted Rondo Awards, one for “Best Fan Event” and a second for myself as “Monster Kid of the Year” for directing the event. The Rondo Awards are prestigious Fan Awards given out...

One of our favorite horror events of the year is Drive-In Super Monster-Rama, which takes place every September and shows eight classic horror movies over two nights on a huge drive-in screen. Last year, they dedicated the entire event to movies featuring Peter Cushing and this year they have another memorable lineup that classic horror fans should dig watching outdoors, including one night dedicated to the films of Italian horror director Mario Bava.
The tribute to Italian director Mario Bava takes place Friday night with screenings of four of his films: Planet of the Vampires, Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs, Kill Baby Kill, and The House of Exorcism.
Saturday night’s lineup includes Taste the Blood of Dracula, Dracula A.D. 1972, Trog, and The House That Screamed.
All films are presented in vintage style via 35mm prints, with old-school trailers, shorts, and intermission classics playing throughout the marathon that...

Vincentennial, the Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, which took place here in St. Louis last Spring and was covered in depth at We Are Movie Geeks, has been nominated for a Rondo Award for “Best Fan Event”. Now in their tenth year, The Rondo Awards are prestigious Fan Awards given out annually for the year’s best horror-related stuff–movies, magazines, articles, toys, etc. The Rondos are completely fan-based; nominees are selected by horror film fans and focus specifically on the horror genre. The awards are debated at The Classic Horror Film Board and presented at the Wonderfest Hobby Expo in May in Louisville, Ky. The awards are named for Rondo Hatton, the 1940′s-era character actor whose glandular disease resulted in a misshapen face and brutish appearance (an article I wrote for Wamg about Mr. Hatton can be found Here)
The Rondos have 31 categories covering all aspects of film and the horror genre in general,...

Due to technical difficulties beyond our control, we were unable to show the Champagne For Caesar and Baron Of Arizona at our Vincentennial Vincent Price Film Festival last night. We are now showing the 35mm print of Champagne For Caesar Thursday night (May 26th) at 9:15 after the screening of Witchfinder General at Brown Hall on the campus of Washington University. Cinema St. Louis will be showing Baron Of Arizona at the St. Louis International Film Festival in November. Super-8 Vincent Price Movie Madness is still playing at The Way Out Club Thursday night starting at 10pm and there will be a bonus element at that: a 16mm print of Dr. Goldfoot And The Girl Bombs (1966), a film considered by Price scholars to be his worst but one that is actually a campy, kitschy blast from the past. Dr. Goldfoot And The Girl Bombs will begin at 11:30 at The Way Out Club.

The all-Vincent Price issue of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat is hot off the presses!. The Globe is a monthly paper run by Steve DeBellis, a well know St. Louis historian, and it’s the largest one-man newspaper in the world. The concept of the Globe is that there is an old historic headline, then all the articles in that issue are written as if it’s the year that the headline is from. Steve’s been publishing this paper since 1986 (it was called the St. Louis Inquirer until 1994 when he bought the naming rights to the Globe, which had been a major daily for over 100 years until it folded in 1986).
Steve is and last summer I was introduced to Steve, a huge Vincent Price fan, last summer and we collaborated on an all-Vincent Price issue of the Globe-Democrat to tie into the Vincentennial. This issue deviates from the...

Dr. Goldfoot And The Bikini Machine (1965) was a wild and funny send-up of beach movies, James Bond spy films, and horror movie cliches. It boasted Frankie Avalon, Dwayne Hickman (TVs Dobie Gillis), and the beautiful Susan Hart as a robot who speaks in a variety of foreign accents. The great Vincent Price also stars as the mad scientist/evil supervillain of the title, a role he would reprise in both a television musical special promoting the film, The Wild Weird World Of Dr. Goldfoot (which also included Hart), and the Italian-made sequel Dr. Goldfoot And The Girl Bombs (1966), directed by giallo and horror meistro Mario Bava. And while Bikini Machine and Wild Weird World have both been released on DVD (but are currently out-of-print), the Girl Bombs sequel still has yet to find a home on DVD.
