In 1963 Paul Newman went to the Venice Film Festival for the Italian premiere of Martin Ritt’s Hud, a few months following its U.S. release, and sat down with Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci to discuss his life and career. At the time he was 38 and becoming a director was but a dream. Only two years earlier, the rising movie star cemented that status with what would become (and remain) perhaps his most iconic role: “Fast Eddie” Felson in The Hustler. Four years after this interview, he’d be Cool Hand Luke, his other most iconic role.
Fallaci, slightly younger than Newman and already known for her controversial interviews, had made waves in 1956 when the magazine L’Europeo dispatched her to Los Angeles hoping to get a fresh perspective on the Hollywood star system. Her interviews extended beyond movie stars to encompass a diverse array of insiders, from producers and directors to aspiring actors,...

Robert Downey Jr. looks to have Best Supporting Actor locked up after he swept the precursors for his sterling turn in Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer.” But while Downey Jr. would be more than a deserving winner for his phenomenal performance, the Oscars always throws up a surprise or two on the actual night. Could we see an upset in Best Supporting Actor?
Downey Jr. is nominated alongside Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), and Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Gosling has lots of support for his sublime “Barbie” performance while Ruffalo and Brown also have their backers, too. However, the legendary De Niro could prove to be the closest challenger to Downey Jr. thanks to his iconic career and status.
This is De Niro’s ninth Oscar nomination. He’s been nominated for Best Actor five times — in 1977 for “Taxi Driver,...

At a time when Netflix, Amazon, Apple and the rest of the for-profit streaming universe are looking to ramp up subscriber numbers and revenue – because they are, after all, in the moneymaking business – Kanopy is something of a revelation. It offers what is undoubtedly the best library streaming service around, available free and ad-free to some 45 million people in the United States with a library card and through more than 85% of large American colleges and universities. It has more than 12,000 filmmaker and supplier partners.
Kanopy’s curated catalog of feature films and documentaries (available at kanopy.com) cuts across a variety of movie genres and TV classics, including Oscar winners like “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Whale,” “Thelma & Louise,” “Black Hawk Down,” the Paul Newman-starrer “Hud” and “Romeo & Juliet” (from 1968), to Academy Award nominees “Triangle of Sadness” “Lady Bird” and “Eo,” to the Emmy-winning David Bowie documentary “Moonage Daydream,...

In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, 88 films have each received nominations for both Best Actor and Best Actress. Although there have been 19 cases of two or more movies doing so in a single year, there hasn’t been such an occurrence since 1996, when both lead lineups included performers from “Dead Man Walking” and “Leaving Las Vegas.” However, according to Gold Derby’s late-stage 2024 Oscar nominations predictions, that nearly three-decade gap is set to soon be closed by costar pairs from “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Maestro.”
The vast majority of the Oscars prognosticators who’ve been shaping our odds all season agree that Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) will all clinch academy mentions for their lead performances. The last such quartet consisted of eventual winners Nicolas Cage (“Leaving Las Vegas”) and Susan Sarandon (“Dead Man Walking”) and their respective costars,...

Oscar-winning legend Paul Newman appeared in dozens of films throughout his lengthy career, but how many of those titles are classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of Newman’s greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
For years Newman was the perpetual Oscar bridesmaid, racking up failed Best Actor nominations for “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” (1958), “The Hustler” (1961), “Hud” (1963), “Cool Hand Luke” (1967), “Absence of Malice” (1981), and “The Verdict” (1982), as well as a Best Picture bid for producing “Rachel, Rachel” (1968). The Academy handed him an Honorary Award in 1985, only to give him a competitive prize the very next year for “The Color of Money” (1986). He scored subsequent bids in lead for “Nobody’s Fool” (1994) and supporting for “Road to Perdition” (2002).
The actor enjoyed a lengthy career behind the camera as well, winning the Golden Globe and competing at the Directors Guild Awards for helming “Rachel, Rachel,” which brought his wife,...

Exclusive: BET+ has renewed its Emmy-nominated series The Ms. Pat Show for a fourth season.
From Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams and Jordan E. Cooper, the series lifts from Williams’ life experiences covered in her memoir Rabbit: The Autobiography of Ms. Pat, which tells the story of a drug dealer and convicted felon turned suburban mom.
“It’s going to be another great and funny season and we’re so excited,” Williams tells Deadline exclusively. “I don’t want to give anything away but as you know, we’re always challenging ourselves. What I will say is that Season 4 will be better than prior seasons.”
When asked how she keeps storylines fresh and doesn’t run out of new content she said with a laugh, “There’s something happening in my house every day.”

For most actors, winning an Oscar is seen as the absolute pinnacle of a Hollywood career. For a select group of performers, though, one simply isn’t enough.
There have been 44 different actors to have won multiple awards, the first coming in 1937 when Luise Rainer became the original two-time Oscar darling.
Some manage to win every time they are nominated. Others, such as the inimitable Meryl Streep, have careers peppered with nominations, winning only when the so-called narrative dictates.
In 2021, Anthony Hopkins took home his second statuette, for his role in The Father. The year before, Renée Zellweger took home her second Oscar after playing Judy Garland in Judy.
In 2020, Mahershala Ali picked up his second Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Best Picture winner Green Book. He previously won for Moonlight in 2017.
Here are the actors with the most Oscar wins.

The films in contention for the 2023 Best Cinematography Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Bardo,” “Elvis,” “Empire of Light,” and “Tar.” Our odds currently favor “All Quiet on the Western Front” (16/5) taking the prize, followed in order by “Elvis” (39/10), “Tar” (9/2), “Empire of Light” (9/2), and “Bardo” (9/2).
Including his dual bids in 2008, this is the 14th time Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”) has competed for this award. After finishing first in the 2018 (“Blade Runner 2049”) and 2020 (“1917”) races, he could now become the 11th person to achieve a third cinematography win. This marks his third nomination for a film directed by Sam Mendes, after “Skyfall” (2013) and “1917.”
The only other returning nominee in this group is “Bardo” lenser Darius Khondji, who was first recognized for “Evita” in 1997. He is now the first West Asian cinematographer to earn two academy notices, with the category’s only other generally Asian repeat competitors...

A pair of items once owned by the late Paul Newman — specifically, two wristwatches — have already proven themselves to be highly collectible at auction, with a rare Rolex Daytona gaveling for $17.8 million in 2017 and another Daytona selling for $5.4 million three years later.
Now, Sotheby’s auction house is readying a sale of more than 300 items from the collection of Newman, who died in 2008 at age 83, and his wife of 50 years, 93-year-old, Oscar-winning actress Joanne Woodward. (The actress was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2007.)
Set to take place across a series of Sotheby’s sales this June in New York, the collection, titled “The World of Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman,” encompasses objects that provide a window into both the professional and personal lives of the couple, recently chronicled in the six-part HBO Max docuseries The Last Movie Stars, directed by Ethan Hawke.

When Sidney Poitier was honored as the first African American male to win a competitive acting Oscar in 1964 for his lead performance in “Lilies of the Field,” it had been 24 years since Hattie McDaniel became the Jackie Robinson of the Academy Awards with her breakthrough triumph in 1940 for “Gone With the Wind.” And it would be another 19 years before there was a third: Louis Gossett Jr.’s supporting actor victory in 1983 for “An Officer and a Gentleman.”
Wins for three performers of color in 43 years didn’t exactly represent a trend. But in the 39 years after that, there would be 19 more, including a pair of African American actors (Denzel Washington and Mahershala Ali) who won twice apiece. Poitier’s ’64 triumph proved as surprising as it was stirring, and undeniably political. Leading up to that historic event, his inscrutable countenance and the almost regal way he carried himself made Poitier a...

In Fps titles, the field of view slider (Fov) is king. Gamers need to modify their Fov to get the view that best suits them, but sometimes developers forget to implement this crucial aspect. When that happens, it’s time to turn to mods.
Russian game development studio Mundfish announced Atomic Heart in 2017 and has been hard at work polishing their debut game ever since. Yet in all that time, the developers never added an Fov
Wccftech reached out to Mundfish and learned that the company thought it didn’t need one since “Atomic Heart already features a wide Fov, higher than many other games.” On the surface, this sounds like a reasonable explanation, but for many gamers, there’s no such thing as too wide of an Fov. Gamers generally prefer to tailor their game displays to fit their personal preferences and hardware. Thankfully, some coders have already created...

The relationship between fathers and sons is complicated. It can be tough, tender, loving, combative, disappointing, violent, the stuff of Shakespearean and even Greek tragedy. It’s little wonder there have been countless films exploring fathers and sons including “East of Eden,” “Finding Nemo,” “Back to the Future,” “Field of Dreams,” “Nebraska,” “Fences,” “Beginners” and “Kramer vs. Kramer.”
One of the most indelible is Martin Ritt’s “Hud,” which celebrates its 60th anniversary. And time hasn’t diminished the power of this unapologetic drama starring Paul Newman, Melvyn Douglas, Patricia Neal and Brandon De Wilde.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “Do Revenge,” now streaming on Netflix.]
A modern update on “Clueless” and “Cruel Intentions” with a “Strangers on a Train” twist? Well, we might not immediately think of Marlon Brando or Paul Newman as inspirations for a Hitchcockian ode to classic ’90s teen dramedies, but we are not Hollywood royalty, Maya Hawke.
The star of Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s “Do Revenge,” now streaming on Netflix, revealed that she was inspired by iconic male onscreen villains while preparing to embody Eleanor, a seemingly innocent new girl on campus who is out for revenge. Eleanor gets schooled by “revenge mommy” Drea, played by Camila Mendes — but Eleanor has more than a few twists up her sleeve.
“I really tried to look at male performances because the nature of both of the lead characters aren’t necessarily ‘likable’ 100 percent of the time,” Hawke told IndieWire. “And I feel like men are often given...

If you're a law-abiding citizen with no experience of life behind bars, a good prison movie is a window into a harsh world far removed from regular day-to-day life. There is something so intense about the idea of incarceration that makes it great for drama, and also lends itself to symbolism and metaphor beyond the usual narrative beats of violent inmates, old lags, sadistic screws, and suspenseful escapes.
I recently had a discussion around this with a friend regarding "The Shawshank Redemption." He keeps his kids well away from any screen violence while I have watched the movie with my seven-year-old daughter. Why, he wanted to know, did I think a film containing brutal beatings, suicide, and sexual assault was suitable for her? Well, we skipped some of the darker stuff, and I felt the story's overall message of resilience, hope, and friendship was the important thing, reflected in how...

Cinematography retrospectives are the way to go—more than a thorough display of talent, it exposes the vast expanse a Dp will travel, like an education in form and business all the same. Accordingly I’m happy to see the Criterion Channel give a 25-film tribute to James Wong Howe, whose career spanned silent cinema to the ’70s, populated with work by Howard Hawks, Michael Curtz, Samuel Fuller, Alexander Mackendrick, Sydney Pollack, John Frankenheimer, and Raoul Walsh.
Further retrospectives are granted to Romy Schneider (recent repertory sensation La piscine among them), Carlos Saura (finally a chance to see Peppermint frappe!), the British New Wave, and groundbreaking distributor Cinema 5, who brought to U.S. shores everything from The Man Who Fell to Earth and Putney Swope to Pumping Iron and Scenes from a Marriage.

How a Middle School Violin Teacher Became the Secret Sauce for the Music to HBO’s ‘Last Movie Stars’
Singer, songwriter, former frontman of indie rock’s “The Walkmen” and now composer, Hamilton Leithauser can’t play the horns, but that didn’t deter him from accepting a gig to put music to the HBO six-part series “The Last Movie Stars.”-
Helmed by Ethan Hawke and executive-produced by Martin Scorses, the docu-series chronicles the love story of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward alongside their simultaneously flourishing Hollywood careers. Hawke enlisted a host of well-known voices — including Karen Allen, George Clooney, Oscar Isaac, Latanya Richardson Jackson, Zoe Kazan, Laura Linney and Sam Rockwell — to narrate the tale. It was also Hawke who called on Leithauser to compose both score music and songs for “Last Movie Stars.”
“1000 Times,” “Rough Going” (I Won’t Let Up) and “Here They Come” were among the songs Leithauser chose to include. In a conversation with Variety, he shares his process in scoring the series...

The journey that led Ethan Hawke to make a six-part documentary about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward started about 40 years ago, when a 10-year-old Hawke was on his way to Sunday church with his father.
“I used to have to go to church every Sunday,” Hawke told the audience on Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival, where two parts of his CNN/HBO Max series “The Last Movie Stars” premiered. “I really hated church, but my parents made me go.”
One particular Sunday, he said, his stepmother was sick and decided to skip the service. So Hawke and his father got dressed up in their suits and ties and headed for church. “On the way there, my father turned to me and said, ‘There’s a matinee of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” playing. Would you rather do that?’”
He laughed. “Yes, I would rather do that!”

Some may rush to identify this character – images of Fox News flash before us – but the TV anchor was, in fact, a creation of Paul Newman, a star of a previous generation whose presence seems pervasive in the present.
At a moment when political expression, personal or corporate, seems instantly suffocated, Newman was a courageous free spirit who vented his opinions and put his career at risk in support of them. The superstar is the subject of a riveting new documentary directed by Ethan Hawke prompting praise this week at SXSW. He also is the subject of a revealing, long-suppressed memoir being published this fall by Alfred A. Knopf.

Ethan Hawke examines the lives and legacies of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, one of Hollywood’s greatest couples, in “The Last Movie Stars.”
The six-hour documentary charts their relationship and meteoric rise to the top of the movie business, but it also serves as a meditation on the art of acting. Woodward and Newman were part of a generation of performers, reared in the Method approach, who brought an exciting vitality and realism to their work in movies like “The Three Faces of Eve,” “The Hustler,” “Hud” and “Rachel, Rachel.”
To tell the story, Hawke assembled a collection of his contemporaries such as Laura Linney, Sam Rockwell, Oscar Isaac and George Clooney to read the couple’s journals and interviews on camera, as well as the reflections of people in their orbit such as director Elia Kazan and writers like Tennessee Williams and Gore Vidal. The first chapter of...

Elden Ring pushes the Soulsborne genre forward in many ways. While the game features many FromSoftware design hallmarks, such as difficult combat and the Moonlight Greatsword, it also includes plenty of new mechanics that make the experience feel fresh. One such addition is Spirit Ashes.
Normally, players have to soldier on alone in games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, but Elden Ring’s Spirit Ashes let them summon computer-controlled allies to aid in combat. Intelligent use of Spirit Ashes can mean the difference between victory and defeat, but players can’t use them right out of the gate.
Here’s what you need to know about Elden Ring‘s Spirit Ashes:
What You Need to Get Started
Elden Ring has a wide variety of Spirit Ashes to collect and upgrade, and each provides a different spectral Npc. However, the ashes are inanimate items on their own and require a spark to bring them to life.

Paul Newman was on a bit of a roll by the time he starred in 1967's "Cool Hand Luke," the sweaty prison classic that gave him one of his iconic roles. Over the previous decade he had established himself as one of Hollywood's biggest stars, a silver screen idol who had notched up three Oscar nominations for his intensely charismatic performances in "Cat On a Hot Tin Roof," "The Hustler," and "Hud." "Cool Hand Luke" would be his fourth. It would take another twenty years before he finally got his hands on one of those little golden fellas, for reprising his role as Fast...

They were a Hollywood power couple who chose to live and raise their family in Connecticut, far removed from the center of moviemaking. They were box office draws who remained true to their art, using their celebrity to finance smaller dramas and passion projects. They epitomized glamour and romance for legions of fans, but remained more devoted to social justice and philanthropy than red carpet premieres.
Now, a new six-part documentary will examine the lives and legacies of the enigmatic and incandescent Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman. The series, “The Last Movie Stars,” is directed by Ethan Hawke and executive produced by Martin Scorsese. CNN Films and HBO Max are backing the series, which will premiere exclusively on CNN Plus, the news network’s subscription streaming service which will debut later this year. The film will also be available later via HBO Max.
There’s certainly a lot of rich material to dig into.

There seems to be a yearning for nostalgia in entertainment these days, given that our daily headlines are rarely upbeat and heartwarming, what with the country’s deeply ingrained political divisions as well as the ongoing threat of the Covid-19 pandemic. That might be why TV execs have been capitalizing on their audience’s hunger for comfort viewing with revivals of hits from past, ranging from “Sex and the City” and “Dexter” to “The Wonder Years” and “Gossip Girl.”

For all of us big Paul Newman fans, it came as thrilling news last week that Knopf will be publishing the Hollywood icon’s unfinished memoir next fall, largely based on his own oral history along with interviews with his friends and family, actors like Tom Cruise and directors including George Roy Hill of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” fame.
I’ve been obsessed with Newman my entire life, having grown up watching all his movies and going gaga every time he appeared on-screen. I met him once years ago when he and Joanne Woodward visited an acting class that I was in with one of Newman’s daughters. Meeting and conversing with that dreamy blue-eyed wonder was, well, you can just imagine.
I spoke with Knopf editor-at-large Peter Gethers, who will be editing the yet-to-be-titled memoir, and we agreed that Newman, Steve McQueen and Sidney Poitier are the...

A memoir written by actor Paul Newman but left unfinished in his lifetime will be published by Alfred A. Knopf next fall, the publishing house announced today.
Newman started writing the book in the 1980s with screenwriter Stewart Stern, but the memoir remained unfinished and unpublished when the Cool Hand Luke actor died in 2008. The manuscript, according to Knopf, was recently discovered in the Connecticut home where Newman’s wife Joanne Woodward still lives.
The publisher said in a statement that the memoir addresses such topics as “acting, directing, boyhood, family, fame, Hollywood, Broadway, love, his first marriage, his 50-year marriage to Joanne Woodward, drinking, politics, racing, his ultimate ride to stardom, and aging gracefully.”
Said Knopf, “Through Newman’s voice, and the voices of others, the book captures the paradoxical and unstoppable rise of a star who wrestled with doubts, believing he was inferior to Marlon Brando and James Dean,...

After a 15 months delay, the 74th annual Tony Awards honoring the best of Broadway will be held September 26 on CBS and Paramount +. And there a lot of familiar faces expected at the ceremony at the Winter Garden Theatre including six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald, who is nominated for the revival of “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune”; Jane Alexander, who won her first Tony Award 52 years ago for “The Great White Hope” and contends for “Grand Horizons”; and 90-year-old Lois Smith, who made her Broadway debut nearly 70 years ago, is up for “The Inheritance.”
The Tony Awards first ceremony, held April 6 1947 at the Grand Ballroom of the famed Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City, was a vastly different affair. Awards were handed out in only eight categories. Producer, director and Tony founder Brock Pemberton was the host of the evening which was broadcast on Wor and Mutual Network radio stations.

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

Over the past 10 years, the academy has not demonstrated a clear performance length preference with their choices of Best Actress winners. While the actress with the highest or second highest screen time in her lineup has prevailed five times, the one with the lowest or second lowest has done so in four years and the one in the middle once. Last year’s victor, Renée Zellweger (“Judy”), outpaced her competitors by over two minutes and 5%, while the champ before her, Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”), had the lowest total in her group by over 12 minutes and 20%.
It is essentially impossible to forecast the results of a given Best Actress Oscar race using screen time data, but it does appear that somewhat longer performances are more likely to prevail. The current crop of voters could continue the Zellweger trend or just as easily shift the focus back to smaller roles, making this anyone’s game to win.

With Outriders, Square Enix and Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly deliver a brand new looter shooter experience to rival games like Destiny, The Division, and Warframe. While it’s still too early to tell just how this online experience ultimately compares to the games that have come before, it does have one major thing in common with other titles in its genre: launch day server problems and performance issues.
Server issues are pretty much par for the course when it comes to live service titles these days. It always takes a couple of weeks to get all of the online components just right after launch. It’s a shame but it’s also just the reality of opening up servers to a huge playerbase, and the fact the most studios around the world are still working remotely certainly doesn’t help. Looter shooters in general rarely smooth launch weekends, but...

While Outriders is a pretty impressive looter shooter in a lot of ways, but it’s hard to deny that the game’s server and performance issues are ruining the experience for many players.
Maybe we should be used to these kinds of issues by now (and the difficulty of developing a game during a global pandemic almost certainly exasperates them), but it’s a shame that Outriders hot debut has been cooled slightly by the fact that many people haven’t been able to connect to the game in the first place. Others simply aren’t able to enjoy it without navigating a variety of performance issues.
While Outriders’ long-term fixes are going to likely come in the form of official updates and patches, you can make things a little easier on yourself by trying a few of these quick fixes designed to address some of the game’s most immediate issues.

Diana Ossana is flat on her back, wracked with grief. She’s just lost her best friend and writing partner, Larry McMurtry, a man she nursed through open heart surgery in 1991 and a couple of other heart attacks, who after three years of battling congestive heart failure, finally succumbed Thursday in his home in Archer City, Texas. He was 84. “Larry through stubbornness and brilliance kept going,” said Ossana. “He kept going. I feel like one of my limbs is cut off. We’re all pretty crushed.”
Ossana picked up the phone to talk about her writing partner of 28 years, with whom she shared the 2006 Screenplay Oscar for adapting Annie Proulx’s “Brokeback Mountain.” “We were each other’s best friend,” she said. “Larry would tell people to call me in the last 10 years or so: ‘Ask Diana, she knows me better than I do myself.’ From the beginning of our friendship,...

Larry McMurtry, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer whose novels, such as “The Last Picture Show,” “Terms of Endearment” and “Lonesome Dove,” were turned into award-winning films and who won an Oscar for co-adapting “Brokeback Mountain,” has died, according to The New York Times. He was 84.
A spokesperson for McMurtry’s family confirmed his death to The New York Times. No cause of death was given.
McMurtry and his frequent collaborator Diana Ossana penned “Brokeback Mountain” based on Annie Proulx’s short story, taking the Western genre in which McMurtry so frequently worked in a new direction: a gay love story. The film saw this theme welcomed by large mainstream audiences for the first time and also won the Oscar for best director and was nominated for best picture.
McMurtry also shared a 1973 Oscar nomination with Peter Bogdanovich for the adaptation of McMurtry’s novel “The Last Picture Show.”

Speaking on BBC Radio 2’s “The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show” on Friday, Bonneville said: “Here’s the deal, if everybody who is offered a vaccine takes a vaccine, we can make a movie, we will make a movie.”
The actor, who is volunteering as a marshal at his local vaccination center and has had his first jab, said that he has seen a script for a sequel.

Bengaluru, Feb 9 (Ians) Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (Hal) would make head-up display (Hud) systems for pilots in partnership with Israel's Elbit Systems Electro Optics Elop Ltd, the aerospace major said on Monday.

After spending four years developing and shepherding Lifetime network’s robust unscripted slate as the VP of non-fiction programming, Mioshi Hill has been tapped to serve as president of ITV America’s Sirens Media. Hill will be at the helm of building upon the full-service pop culture and lifestyle-focused production label’s legacy of savvy storytelling. The Los Angeles-based company’s specials and hits include Bravo’s long-running “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” series, A&e’s “The Untold Story: I Was a Child Bride,” as well as other reality content such as Snapchat’s “Nikita Unfiltered.”
“We’ve had the privilege of working with Mioshi as a network partner at Lifetime and were continually impressed with her creative instincts and skilled leadership as an executive,” said ITV America CEO David George, in a statement. All streaming services go through a down period after the excitement of Spooky Season, it’s only natural. Thankfully with its list of new releases for November 2020, Hulu is making the best out of a barren pop culture landscape.
For starters, Hulu is premiering one of its major 2020 reboots this month as Animaniacs arrives on Nov. 20. Yakko, Wakko, Dot, and the rest of the Warner gang are set to return for this long-awaited revival of the animated classic. That’s about it as far as original series go but Hulu is also premiering original movies Greta, about climate activist Greta Thunberg on Nov. 13; and Run, a horror film starring Sarah Paulson, on Nov. 20.
Still, despite all the Animaniacs, Gretas, and Sarah Paulsons, the biggest hits this month might just be on the library content side of things. November 1 sees the arrival of some major TV properties. For starters, racy British...

Before the next Smackdown, Nick Taylor will be visiting some "alternates" to the Supporting Actress Ballot.
There are two noteworthy bits of trivia about Edge of the City. First: This marks the third of five films where Ruby Dee plays Sidney Poitier's wife, as well as the first of these films to focus on her character and their marriage in any real detail. Second: Edge of the City is the directorial debut of Martin Ritt, whose most famous films include Hud (which netted him his only Best Director nomination), Sounder, and The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, all of which were highly regarded by critics and Academy members alike. Ritt was a skilled actor’s director, able to craft naturalistic, cinematic performances from his ensembles while paying equal attention to the vastly different tones, milieus, and sociopolitical landscapes of each film. From today’s perspective, United Artists’ 1963 release of “Dr. No” looks like pure sabotage. After screening the first James Bond film for three weeks across 450 theaters in the Midwest, it finally debuted in New York and Los Angeles on the week of Memorial Day 1963. And yet, this modest acorn of a British movie produced not one but two business models that reshaped the industry: It led to the creation of the franchise film, and the blockbuster release strategy.

Top films usually opened as exclusive runs in larger cities with staggered dates; lesser titles sought a quick return via multiple theaters in the same metropolitan area. However, its status as a British hit didn’t carry much weight; it starred an unknown, Sean Connery, and it was overshadowed by “Hud...
