Normally, the summer movie season would kick off with a Marvel superhero movie, but this May, we’re doing things a little differently. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This year and for the first time since the pandemic, Marvel isn’t launching the month of May. Instead, Universal jumped on the date for its new action comedy “The Fall Guy,” loosely based on the popular ’80s series starring Lee Majors. Two of the Oscar-nominated stars from last year’s blockbuster “Barbenheimer” phenom unite for this new action rom-com from filmmaker David Leitch (“Bullet Train”). Those stars, of course, are Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, who were nominated for Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan‘s Best Picture-winning “Oppenheimer,” respectively, two of the biggest movies of 2023. “The Fall Guy” premiered at the SXSW Film and TV Festival and even played at the annual exhibitors’ convention, CinemaCon,...

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering Gothika was Written and Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Back in the late 90’s, early 2000s the horror genre was in that weird phase of encapsulating what it truly wanted to be. Hot off the heels of Scream, horror movies focused much more on the teenage angst, and lifestyle. But there comes a time when some hidden gems make their way to the silver screen that branch off the beaten path with a more adult-themed tale, drenched in psychological/mental horror. What if one day you’re living your average life, working your 9-5, and suddenly black, out only to wake up, institutionalized and accused of committing a crime you can’t seem to remember doing? In 2003, director Mathieu Kassovitz gave us a True...

It’s a bonus episode of Nightmare on Film Street, and we’ve gone ghostly! Join your horror hosts Kimmi & Jon as they crack open the coffin lid on 13 Ghosts: The Series. Think back to William Castle’s iconic 1960 rendition and then fast-forward to its 2001 Dark Castle revamp. Feeling nostalgic yet? Well, hold onto your ghost detectors because there’s a brand new chapter unfolding.
Stepping into our spooky studio are Series Creators Patrick Mediate, Ashley Robinson, and Aaron McLane of Primordial Pictures. They’ve been huddling with Dark Castle Entertainment, cooking up a television series concept for 13 Ghosts. And here’s the kicker: they’re dabbling with Augmented Reality. Think your regular binge-watch, but with a ghostly cameo in your snack bowl.
But wait, there’s a plot twist! While Dark Castle’s giving a thumbs up, Sony Pictures Television is still playing hard to get. What’s...

I unabashedly love both Dark Castle's Thir13en Ghosts from 2001 and the William Castle 13 Ghosts from 1960 in "Illusion-o." I even own a pair of the 3D glasses given out in theaters for 13 Ghosts, so trust me when I say that I'm super excited for the possibility of a Thirteen Ghosts series!
Patrick Mediate, Ashley Robinson and Aaron McLane are producers at Primordial Pictures who have partnered with Dark Castle Entertainment in hopes of bringing a Thirteen Ghosts series to life. In the Dark Castle film, the house was as big of a character as the leads or ghosts, and that is the plan for the new series, but they're taking it to a whole new level:
“Fans of the 2001 remake of Thirteen Ghosts will remember Cyrus’ large glass house was a centerpiece of the storyline. Our version ups the ante (and the scale of things). What once was a mansion...

When it was released back in 2001, Dark Castle Entertainment’s remake Thirteen Ghosts (stylized as Thir13en Ghosts) didn’t exactly set the box office on fire, scaring up just $68 million worldwide on a sizable production budget of $42 million. Reviews for the film were also largely negative at the time, making it both a financial as well as a critical misfire.
But the times, well, they have changed. Like many horror movies over the years, director Steve Beck’s Thirteen Ghosts has been re-evaluated in the two decades since its original theatrical release, becoming something of a fan favorite here in 2023. Fans have come to appreciate the gruesome effects, the big budget production design, and the titular monsters themselves, which came equipped with their own backstories thanks to a DVD special feature that we’ve written about in the past. And it’s safe to say Dark Castle has noticed this renewed interest.

A few days ago, Dread Central learned that Patrick Mediate of Primordial Pictures, The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead VFX supervisor Aaron McLane, and Ashley Robinson, a co-producer of Fear the Walking Dead, are teaming up with Dark Castle Entertainment to develop and pitch a TV series inspired by William Castle‘s 1960 classic 13 Ghosts and its 2001 remake. Now we’ve gotten an Exclusive look at a couple slides from the show’s comprehensive development deck, and you can check them out below!
The plan is that the 13 Ghosts series would consist of thirteen episodes. The team behind the project shared the following information: “Every culture in the world has its ghost stories, and this re-imagining of 13 Ghosts presents an international sampling of these supernatural tales. Our friends over at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago are reviving the spirit of late gimmick-master William Castle with a special screening of the horror classic The House on Haunted Hill next month, and they’re pulling out all the stops to recreate the wild theatrical experience that Castle employed at select movie theaters way back in the late 1950s.
The Music Box Theatre tells Bd, “William Castle is throwing a party and you’re invited! We’re rigging up the theatre the way Castle intended. See all your favorite gimmicks and gags at the Music Box Theatre on June 7th at 7:00pm and June 8th at 9:30pm.”
In the 1959 horror classic, “Rich oddball Frederick Loren has a proposal for five guests at a possibly haunted mansion: show up, survive a night filled with scares and receive $10,000 each. The guest of honor is Loren’s estranged wife,...

Do houses have memories? These ones seem to. We pick our favorite haunted house movies and TV shows...
The haunted house is a staple horror device. Usually hundreds of years old, ideally massive, and imposing with as many turrets as its roof can bear, there’s nothing like a haunted house to give you the creeps.
But making this list wasn’t as easy as you’d think. To qualify for the list, a film had to feature an actual haunted house – which immediately rules out many of the films that spring to mind when you read that title. The Shining, for example, is about a haunted hotel, not a house. Paranormal Activity initially seems like it’s about a haunted house, but it’s not the house that’s haunted, and also the supernatural entity is a demon, not a ghost. Ditto Insidious, which has some ghosts,...
