A film that wasn't at all on my radar, and I only just learned about, Lionsgate will release "American Heist" - an American-Russian co-produced independent action film directed by Armenian director Sarik Andreasyan, based on the 1959 film "The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery," which starred Steve McQueen and was directed by Charles Guggenheim and John Stix. The film stars Hayden Christensen, Adrien Brody, Tory Kittles, Akon and Jordana Brewster. The story: A New Orleans mechanic's struggle to turn his back on crime is compromised by the unexpected return of his ex-con brother, who quickly gets him involved in a dangerous heist. James and Frankie were just...

Armenian filmmaker Sarik Andreasyan may not be well known to American audiences, but three films that he directed, wrote and produced — “The Pregnant," “Moms," and “That Was The Men’s World” — were certifiable hits in the Russian Box Office. Now, he’s making his U.S. feature film directorial debut with the crime thriller “American Heist," starring Adrien Brody, Hayden Christensen, Jordana Brewster, and Akon. The film is based on the black & white Steve McQueen vehicle “The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery" and updates the plot of the 1950s Missouri-set heist film to modern-day New Orleans. The story follows Frankie Caley (Brody), an ex-con who took the rap for a crime he committed with his younger brother, James (Christensen) - who works hard to start a new life with a new job and a girlfriend (Brewster) while Frankie is incarcerated, serving time. Upon his release, and because he is broke...

Adrien Brody and Hayden Christensen's bank robbery goes horribly wrong in a new trailer for American Heist.
A remake of the 1959 movie The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery tells the story of two brothers trying to escaped their troubled past.
The daring heist could change their fortunes for the better, but events soon spiral far beyond their control into a bloody and tragic showdown.
American Heist had its premiere last autumn at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Special Presentations section.
Starring with Brody and Christensen are Akon (Black November), Jordana Brewster (Furious 7) and Tory Kittles (Olympus Has Fallen).
American Heist opens in the Us on July 24. A UK release is yet to be set.

As Cinema Retro gets inundated with DVDs to review during the course of any given year, it's virtually impossible to keep up with all of them in a timely manner. Here are some notable titles you should be aware of:
Cabaret Blu-ray (Warner Home Video): Warner Home Video has inherited the rights to Bob Fosse's classic 1972 film adaptation of the stage production that, in turn, was based on Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories. The Blu-ray comes packaged in one of those irresistible hardback book formats that is loaded with wonderful photos from the movie. The movie itself holds up superbly even after 40 years. The decline of Germany's Weimar Republic amidst the rise of National Socialism in the 1930s is seen through the eyes of nightclub singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) and her constant companions (Michael York, Helmut Griem) . Fosse's decision to emphasize the sleaze elements...

Bruce Willis has done a fantastic job of ruining his image thanks to a bunch of recent interviews, during which he stated that he's bored by the action genre, even though at the time all five of his upcoming projects were action films. Now comes word that Willis has signed on to star in "The Prince," yet another action movie. "The Prince" will be directed by Russian helmer Sarik Andreasyan, who will make his English-language debut next year with "American Heist," a remake of Steve McQueen's "The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery," which will star Hayden Christensen, Adrien Brody, Jordana Brewster and Akon. "The Prince" centers around a retired mob enforcer who's forced to return to Las Vegas after his teenage daughter goes missing. Willis will play a man who's waited a long time for the enforcer to come back, and who intends to confront him when he does.

He might be bored of action movies, but Bruce Willis is nothing if not charitable, agreeing in the spirit of sacrifice to yeah, ok, alright, just one last time, etc., etc., star in an action movie. Said film is The Prince, coming to us courtesy of Russian director Sarik Andreasyan, whose previous work is mostly in the Russian language. He is making his English-language debut next year with The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery, starring Hayden Christensen, Adrien Brody, Jordana Brewster, and Akon. He also sports a fine beard, and a cheeky grin.
The script comes from Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore, and the story reads like a sort-of Taken-style revengeathon: Willis plays someone gunning for revenge against a retired mob enforcer, forced into one last job to rescue his daughter from the clutches of that disguting vision of hell, Las Vegas. It is due to start shooting next month in New Orleans,...

We’re not sure whether Hayden Christensen is the person we want planning a bank robbery, but apparently that isn’t worrying Adrien Brody, Jordana Brewster and rapper-turned-actor Akon, who have all signed up for American Heist.Christensen is producing the film via his freshly formed company Glacier Films, which plans to take centuries to release anything while freezing up every winter. All right, so he just liked the name.Sarik Andreasyan is calling the shots for this one, which remakes 1959 Steve McQueen drama The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery. Brody and Christensen will be brothers with a troubled past who get involved with a dangerous bank heist being carried out by violent thieves. The crime will tug at their brotherly bonds. While it appears Brewster won’t be directly involved in the crime, you’ve got to wonder if she’ll be providing getaway tips given her experience with the Fast & Furious crew…...

Jordana Brewster, last seen pulling another fast one in “Fast and Furious 6″, is staying on the outlaw path with “American Heist”, an indie caper that is also a remake of the 1959 Steve McQueen film “The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery”. She will be joined by Adrien Brody and Akon, with Hayden Christensen already in the film. Brody will also produce, alongside Christensen. Sarik Andreasyan is directing the movie, about “two brothers with checkered pasts, one struggling on the road to normalcy, the other just released from prison. Their lives intertwine when one drags the other into an ill-fated bank robbery spearheaded by a gang of dangerous criminals, testing the loyalty of their sibling bond and how far they will go for greed and family.” Since Christensen and Brody got producing credits, I’m guessing they’re playing the brothers. Brewster, of course, is probably one of their love interests. No...

Akon has joined Hayden Christensen, Adrien Brody, and Jordana Brewster in the indie action thriller American Heist - a remake of the 1959 Steve McQueen movie The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery. Steve McQueen: The Actor and His Films by Andrew Antonaides and Mike Siegel from Dalton Watson Fine Books is one of the finest, most lavish movie books about a single actor that I have ever read. All of iconic superstar Steve McQueen’s films are equally discussed from his classics (The Blob, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, The Cincinnati Kid, The Sand Pebbles, Bullitt, The Thomas Crown Affair, Papillon), to his lesser known earlier movies (Never Love a Stranger, The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery)An Enemy of the People, The Hunter), to his misfires (The Honeymoon Machine, Soldier in the Rain, Baby the Rain Must Fall), to his TV series (Wanted: Dead or Alive). Most coffee table-type movie books that I have encountered are extravagantly- made, featuring glorious photographs, but containing very little substance. However, Steve McQueen...
