Fall is the season of Real-People movies — the biopics that often fuel Oscar hopes. Recent weeks brought “The Battle of the Sexes,” “Stronger,” and “Victoria & Abdul” and there’s more than a dozen to come, including “Marshall,” “The Post,” “Darkest Hour,” and “The Current War.” There’s good reason to believe that a biopic might produce awards. In the last five years, 28 of the 100 Oscar acting nominees played real-life characters, as did four of the 20 winners. But when it comes to the box office, the odds aren’t as kind.

New entry “American Made” (Universal) and holdovers “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” (20th Century Fox) and “It” (Warner Bros.). are basically tied at the top for weekend box office #1, with estimates placing all within $310,000. Any of the three could emerge on top when Sunday’s actual numbers are compiled after the weekend.
That’s good news for “It” in its fourth weekend (now headed even higher than the $325 million that seemed likely a couple days ago), more mixed for the opening of Tom Cruise’s latest film and the holdover for the expensive second release in the “Kingsman” franchise.
What is not good news is the sudden 20 per cent-plus drop in box office total revenues for the weekend. After three post-Labor Day stanzas where “It” propelled a strong resurgence that gave hope that the mediocre summer’s returns might improve, the current results suggest that the year will end down...

'Saint Joan': Constance Cummings as the George Bernard Shaw heroine. Constance Cummings on stage: From sex-change farce and Emma Bovary to Juliet and 'Saint Joan' (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Frank Capra, Mae West and Columbia Lawsuit.”) In the mid-1930s, Constance Cummings landed the title roles in two of husband Benn W. Levy's stage adaptations: Levy and Hubert Griffith's Young Madame Conti (1936), starring Cummings as a demimondaine who falls in love with a villainous character. She ends up killing him – or does she? Adapted from Bruno Frank's German-language original, Young Madame Conti was presented on both sides of the Atlantic; on Broadway, it had a brief run in spring 1937 at the Music Box Theatre. Based on the Gustave Flaubert novel, the Theatre Guild-produced Madame Bovary (1937) was staged in late fall at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre. Referring to the London production of Young Madame Conti, The...

Sun-drenched Messina or Sun Belt capital Atlanta — take your pick: The battle of the sexes rages as New York’s summer season gets underway, courtesy of the Bard, in Italy, and last year’s prodigiously talented Pulitzer winner, Ayad Akhtar, in the second. Shakespeare in The Park, the continuing gift of the Public Theater to people either willing to wait hours on line or shell out tax-deductible dollars to the House That Joe Papp Built, launches with director Jack O’Brien’s visually sumptuous and often rollicking – and unabashedly American — staging of Much Ado About Nothing. I use the words visually […]...

It was a debacle. The battle of the sexes twist didn’t work. The cast was unlikable, including one dude who called himself Troyzan and another dude who called himself Tarzan. It was ridiculous. So when Survivor: One World signed off in the spring of 2012, many wondered openly about the health of the franchise that gave birth to network reality TV way back in the summer of 2000. Maybe it was finally time to snuff Survivor’s torch.
Except that’s not what happened. Ever since then, Survivor has been so hot that Michael Skupin may burn his hands on it...

Hell hath no fury like a vampire, a teenage witch, an adult witch, a pregnant werewolf, and a human woman scorned. That’s basically what I took away from this episode. That, and the fact that Elijah’s attractiveness knows no bounds. Is it just me, or is he even prettier in 2014? It’s probably that he was in a T-shirt this episode. A T-shirt, you guys! So much for only wearing suits. But before I write this entire react about Elijah’s appearance — and I could — let’s get down to business … to defeat the Huns.

Trailers from Hell starts the week with director Allan Arkush introducing the trailer to Adrian Lyne's well-made yet wildly sexist thriller "Fatal Attraction," starring Michael Douglas as a philandering husband who becomes terrorized by an unstable fling (in the form of Glenn Close). The battle of the sexes goes gonzo in Adrian Lyne's megahit psycho killer (in the view of one sex) revenge fantasy (in the view of the other). It's kind of a more manipulative remake of Play Misty for Me. The original ironic ending was jettisoned seven months after it was shot when bloodthirsty preview audiences rejected it. This turned the commercial tide, resulting in big boxoffice and numerous Oscar nominations. The original climax was retained for the Japanese release, where audiences found it satisfyingly fatalistic. Both endings are available on various home video releases.

Wimbledon, Glastonbury and glorious weather across much of the UK created a perfect storm of challenging conditions for cinemas, resulting in some weak debuts and steep falls for existing movies. But a film that audiences really want to see can overcome any obstacle, a phenomenon witnessed many times in the past and seen at the weekend with the release of Despicable Me 2.
Debuting with an astonishing £9.95m, plus £4.87m from two days of previews, after just five days the sequel has achieved 73% of the lifetime box office (£20.2m) for the original Despicable Me. That film debuted in October 2010 with £3.66m including £205,000 in previews – at the time considered a great result for a film based on characters with no pre-existing audience awareness, and from a studio (Universal) with...

Spring is here, folks! New love and life are upon us now that the dreary, ice-cold fingers of winter have withdrawn. Loosely translated into the logic of releasing films, this means documentaries and romance melodramas abound! They pop up from studios like daisies from freshly hoed lawns. Head to theaters this weekend and take in the sweet love of soldiers, vampires, Rastafarians, and even chimpanzees. And don’t forget to stop and smell the flowers on your way.
Zac Efron is “The Lucky One” in the adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel opening in theaters this weekend. A marine stationed in Iraq, Efron’s Logan is saved from certain death when a photo of the beautiful Beth (Taylor Schilling) distracts him. Though he originally plans to find and thank her for unknowingly saving his life, Logan ultimately keeps the story to himself once they meet, but hangs around just, well, ‘cause.

Throughout the history of moving images, there have been many films that have dealt with alienated, disaffected youth. Gosh, every decade has a new armada of weird teenagers to complement the incoming freshman of either High School or College: Zits can be big business, baby. In reality, a person’s early years can be extremely dramatic, filled with hormonal conflict. Besides, filmmakers love to make movies that contain messages that appeal to the massive audiences who pay the large sums to see the latest weekend release. These days, that large crowd is in their teens and twenties. Anyway, I imagine that everyone has at least one horror story from his or her early years. I might have too many.
As far as this film goes, ‘The Graduate’ has nothing to worry about. Neither does good ol’ Holden Caulfield in the groundbreaking novel, A Catcher in the Rye.

In her column at the New York Times today, Maureen Dowd tag teams with film writer Sam Wasson to bemoan the state of the romantic comedy. It's a not-uncommon complaint (and a variation on the larger "there are no good movies anymore" one trotted out by Joe Queenan last week) that usually goes something like this: "Romantic comedies used to be awesome, but they totally suck now, don't they?" "Totally!"
While Dowd runs through the usual questions -- "How did we get from 'Two for the Road' to 'The Bounty' and 'He's Just Not That Into You'?" -- Wasson, the author of recent making-of-"Breakfast at Tiffany's"-tome "Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.," makes an important point:
Even the studios that are run by women aren't run by women. They're run by corporations, which are run by franchises. Unfortunately for us, Jennifer Aniston is a franchise. So is Katherine Heigl and Gerard Whatever-His-Name-Is,...

The battle of the sexes is alive and well in Hollywood, and whether it is the subject of a rom-com or an indie flick, audiences love to watch a good ol' fashioned throw down. But what makes a 'battle of the sexes' comedy a tricky proposition is that someone has to lose. So how do you make your audience (who is for the most part, female) accept the idea that a strong and feisty gal has learned the error of her ways and has 'surrendered to love''? Granted, it was a heck of a lot easier when they were making these movies in the '30s and '40s and marriage was the inevitable 'happy ending' for most gals.
