Living screen legend Robert De Niro became uncharacteristically verklempt while discussing his newborn daughter in an interview this week, telling AARP that parenting his baby girl is “wondrous.”
“I’m an 80-year-old dad and it’s great,” De Niro told the magazine for its latest cover story. “Everything that I’m consumed with or worried about… this and that… just goes away when I look at her.”
At that point in the sit-down, which mostly covered De Niro’s seven-decade-spanning career, working with Martin Scorsese and their latest, the Oscar-nominated Killers of the Flower Moon, the veteran actor and nine-time Oscar contender began to tear up. “That in itself is wondrous.”
De Niro, traditionally affable but solidly stoic while discussing his life and work, then quickly composed himself as he shared details about his growing bond with his baby girl; he even compared the experience to time with the daughter...

Ava Gardner was one of the great movie stars of the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, Her smouldering good looks often cast her in the role of seductress. And her three high-profile marriages only reinforced that public perception of the actress.
After a number of bit parts for MGM in the early 1940s, Gardner broke through with a sensational performance in 1946’s “The Killers” which truly launched her film stardom. As her craft evolved over the years, she became an esteemed actress, earning a Best Actress Oscar nomination for 1953’s “Mogambo” and a Golden Globe nom for 1964’s “The Night of the Iguana,” as well as four BAFTA nominations.
So let’s celebrate her life by looking back at and ranking the 12 greatest films of Gardner. Our photo gallery also includes “Showboat,” “The Killers” plus the movies mentioned in this article. Which one do you think is in our #1 overall spot?...

Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.
Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. January’s Criterion Editions are Inside Llewyn Davis, Farewell Amor, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and (most intriguingly) the long-out-of-print The Man Who Fell to Earth, Blu-rays of which go for hundreds of dollars.

The Killers have unveiled their greatest hits album, Rebel Diamonds, which features a newly released song called “Spirit.”
Rebel Diamonds features songs from all seven of The Killers’ studio albums, and is ordered chronologically to make up a 20-track record. “20 songs for 20 years,” Flowers says in the album’s trailer. Among some of the greatest hits on the album are “Mr. Brightside,” “Somebody Told Me,” and “When You Were Young.” The band’s latest singles “boy” and “Your Side of Town” are also featured on the album.
“Spirit” is the final track on Rebel Diamonds, and packs plenty of familiar charm for longtime fans of The Killers. Combining the band’s classic throttle with ’80s synth-pop-style keys, frontman Brandon Flowers sings, “Where does the spirit go? Is it someplace holy?/ Is it holy and free?” The Killers previously played the anthemic track live on tour, but this marks its first official release.

Burt Lancaster was an Oscar-winning actor who appeared in dozens of movies until his death in 1994. But which titles are among his finest? Let’s take a look back at 20 of Lancaster’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1913, Lancaster got into acting after performing as an acrobat in the circus. He made his movie debut in 1946 with a leading role in the quintessential noir thriller “The Killers” (1946). He earned his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor for Fred Zinnemann‘s wartime drama “From Here to Eternity” (1953), winning the prize just seven years later for playing a fast-talking preacher in “Elmer Gantry” (1960). Lancaster would compete twice more in the category (“Birdman of Alcatraz” in 1962 and “Atlantic City” in 1981).
In the 1950s, the actor decided to chart his own career by forming the production company Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, which churned out a number of successful titles including the Best Picture-winning “Marty...

With Saturday marking the first official day of Autumn, Las Vegas’ Life is Beautiful is the last hurrah of the summer festival season.

The Killers have released their new single “Your Side of Town.” Stream the song below.
“Hello everyone, with much excitement we present you with ‘Your Side of Town,'” the band shared in a social media statement announcing the song. “It’s got the ghosts of a lot of synth music that inspired us over the years. And yet somehow feels completely our own. Now it’s yours! Turn it up.”
“Your Side of Town” is The Killers’ first new music since last year’s one-off single “boy,” which originated from the Las Vegas group’s sessions for 2021’s Pressure Machine. The new song was produced by the band, along with Stuart Price and Shawn Everett. Leaning heavily into the ’80s-inspired vibe, the single also interlopes modern sounds, even putting a healthy layer of pitch-correction on Brandon Flowers’ voice.

American rock band The Killers issued an apology after controversial statements made during a concert in the Republic of Georgia.
The band is on a European tour that will last through early September. During their concert in Georgia, The Killers invited a Russian fan to come on stage and play drums, which the band considers a long-standing tradition.
During the bit, lead singer Brandon Flowers appeared to have called Georgians and Russians “brothers and sisters,” prompting a wave of boos and other crude remarks from the crowd though the rest of the show, with some getting up and leaving early.
The hostile response towards Flowers’ comments is largely due to the recent history between Russia and Georgia, particularly the Russo-Georgian war in 2008. Most of the Georgian population also supports Ukraine during the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war.
The band responded to the incident on their official X account, stating that they were...

Can it really be 20 years since “The O.C.” premiered on Fox? The young actors of the series, Benjamin McKenzie, Adam Brody, Mischa Barton and Rachel Bilson quickly became in-demand stars and the theme song “California” by Phantom Planet became a top ten hit in several countries while also reaching 35 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart.
The bagel-centric series also introduced us to “Chrismukkah” and showcased bands from The Killers to Modest Mouse.
Several members of the cast went on to lead their own series and films and others have popped up on hit shows from “How I Met Your Mother” to “Grey’s Anatomy.” Here’s what they’ve been up to since “The O.C.” signed off in February 2007.

Benjamin McKenzie, who played O.C. newbie Ryan Atwood, went on to star as an LA cop on TNT’s “Southland” and as James Gordon on Fox’s Batman prequel series “Gotham.

Stepping into the new feature, Surrounded, I had very little idea as to what I was about to experience. Directed by Anthony Mandler, the film features the impressive talents of both Letitia Wright and Jamie Bell. The western tells the story of a former Buffalo Soldier who finds herself tasked with watching over a notorious outlaw. It’s an excellent character study that also happens to feature a number of thrilling sequences, including an incredible stagecoach robbery. I was floored by Surrounded.
Recently, we had the extreme pleasure to chat with the film’s stars as well as Mr. Mandler himself. For Letitia Wright, who has been proving to be an amazing talent, she opened up about taking on this role and to what it entailed. As for Jamie Bell, the actor discussed working with Ms. Wright, and playing a villainous character with a lot of depth. Both give exceptional...

February, marking both Black History Month and Valentine’s Day, is the kind of stretch from which a programmer can mine plenty. Accordingly the Criterion Channel have oriented their next slate around both. The former is mostly noted in a series comprising numerous features and shorts: Shirley Clarke and William Greaves up to Ephraim Asili and Garrett Bradley, among them gems such as Varda’s Black Panthers and Kathleen Collins’ Losing Ground; a six-film series on James Baldwin; and 10 works by Oscar Micheaux.

A 4K Steelbook! Haven’t seen this show lately, and discovered that it holds up remarkably well. Mr. Qt’s sophomore outing made an indelible mark on American movies — the darling of hipster crime filmmaking dazzled viewers with showcase set-piece scenes, entertainingly profane dialogue and ultra-hip inside-out time-shuffling narrative tricks. Add to that genuine star turns, especially Uma Thurman and John Travolta’s iconic dance scene. It’s old-fashioned movie-going in an avant-garde pattern, with raw violence and even rougher language. The stars include Samuel L. Jackson, Harvy Keitel, Ving Rhames, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer and Bruce Willis.

Sam Fender has just been announced as one of the headliners for Reading and Leeds festival (9 December).
While sharing the news to his Instagram page, the North Shields artist recalled a story from when he attended Leeds festival 10 years ago as a punter.
During his time attending the festival, Fender told how he was apparently saved from a tent fire by a “young hero from Sheffield“, who urinated on the flames to put them out.
“Little did he know he’d just saved Reading and Leeds’s 2023 headliner,” Fender joked.
Announcing the news alongside a picture of the official line up, Fender wrote: “I first went to Leeds festival 10 years ago as a teenager, me and Deano [childhood friend and guitarist] spent the entire week launching hot dogs out of a gazebo pole at random crowds of lads chanting ‘Yorkshire Yorkshire’.”

The Killers have spent the past couple of weeks playing North American arenas with opening act Johnny Marr, and every night they’ve brought the guitarist out to join them for one or two Smiths classics. So far, they’ve trotted out “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before,” “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out,” “This Charming Man,” and “What She Said.” Check out the fan-shot video right here.

Clu Gulager, the character actor who famously played Burt in “The Return of the Living Dead” and Mr. Walsh in “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge” among hundreds of other credits, has died at the age of 93.
Gulager was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma in 1928. His legal name was William Martin Gulager, but he received the Cherokee nickname “Clu” at a young age because his middle name is Martin and purple martins are often referred to as “clu-clu birds.” Gulager made his screen acting debut in a 1955 episode of “Omnibus,” and soon found success as a television Western star.
He famously played Billy the Kid on the NBC series “The Tall Man” for its entire two season run, and later joined “The Virginian” in Season 3 as Deputy Sheriff Emmett Ryker, eventually appearing in 104 episodes. He also guest starred on many other Western series including hits like “Wagon Train” and “Bonanza.

“Jurassic World Dominion” and “The Intouchables” star Omar Sy has been tapped to lead John Woo’s reimagining of his 1989 film “The Killers” for Universal Pictures.
The crime action thriller followed a top-tier mob assassin named Jeffrey, who decides to retire after he accidentally blinds a nightclub singer who gets caught in the crossfire of one of his hit jobs. Before quitting his beloved profession, he takes one last job to pay for her sight-restoring operation, only to be double-crossed. He then teams up with a rogue police officer to set things straight.
Woo, the auteur director of movies like “Face/Off,” “Red Cliff” and “A Better Tomorrow,” will also produce the reboot. Writing partners Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell (“10 Cloverfield Lane”), along with as Eran Creevy (“Welcome to the Punch,” “Collide”) and Brian Helgeland (“42,” “Legend,” “Spenser Confidential”) wrote the screenplay.

Ava Gardner made a name for herself portraying sensual beauties in films like "The Killers" and "The Barefoot Contessa." With dark hair, bright green eyes, and a sultry voice, Gardner was the perfect embodiment of a Hollywood femme fatale, and this typecasting followed her off-screen.

This earned her a reputation as a drinker and a partier, two things women weren't supposed to be in the '40s and '50s. Constant tabloid...

Universal’s made-for-tv remake of the Hemingway-inspired 1946 original was deemed too violent for telecast and was diverted to theatrical double bills. Action specialist Don Siegel turns it into a tough, economical B picture whose TV origins are obvious, but Lee Marvin and Clu Gulager (in his greatest role) make as memorable a pair of hit men as Travolta and Jackson in Pulp Fiction.

Guided by Voices’ Robert Pollard has reimagined and combined his two out-of-print 2007 albums into a new release, Our Gaze, set to arrive May 20 via Rockathon Records.
The new project pulls songs from the two LPs Pollard released on Oct. 9, 2007: Standard Gargoyle Decisions and Coast to Coast Carpet of Love (both albums were originally issued by Merge Records). Though both albums are still available digitally, they’ve been out-of-print in physical formats for a while now, which is why Pollard decided to winnow the combined track list down to 15 songs...

It’s the final theatrical western of the legendary director Budd Boetticher, and he also wrote the screenplay! Ace cinematographer Lucien Ballard was behind the camera, and Audie Murphy produced and plays Jesse James! This disc release is a gift to die-hard western fans that want to see everything, but the film itself remains a mystery — oddly nihilistic and cruel, but also awkward, with amateurish acting, slack direction and a TV-movie appearance. The one gotta-see factor for completists is Victor Jory’s three scenes as Judge Roy Bean: he nails the sleazy, gross-out charm of the Texas threat to civilization, chewing the scenery like a pro.

In Netflix’s upcoming assassin thriller “The Killers,” director David Fincher does what David Fincher does best — which is to say the filmmaker delves deep into the mind of the deeply disturbed.
The film, starring Michael Fassbender as a cold-blooded hitman who suddenly develops a conscience, is the kind of tense, edge-of-your-seat character study that harkens back to some of the director’s previous masterworks like “Se7en,” “Fight Club,” “Zodiac” and “Mindhunter.”
“It’s a really provocative and interesting movie,” hints Scott Stuber, the head of global films at Netflix. “It is about the methodology of that world, which David details better than anyone. He’s so good in the detail of method… of watching something unfold. It’s a really fun, big movie in the hands of one of the best filmmakers.”
“The Killers” is one of several movies soon to be streaming on Netflix that have Stuber excited about the future of film.

Billie Eilish‘s “Happier Than Ever” holds on to the number-one spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week ending August 19, as our users predicted it would, but it was a close call. It’s the album’s third straight week at number-one.
“Happier Than Ever” maintained its position with 60,000 equivalent album units, which are calculated by combining album sales, individual track sales, and online streams. That’s the lowest total for a chart-topper since Taylor Swift‘s “Evermore” led for its third week back in January with 56,000 units. But Eilish’s number was enough to make “Happier” the first album since Morgan Wallen‘s “Dangerous” to spend its first three weeks on top, and the first album by a woman to do so since Swift’s “Folklore” last summer.

Billie Eilish topped the Billboard 200 with her sophomore album “Happier Than Ever” in its first week with 238,000 album units. In its second week it dropped significantly to 85,000 units, but that was enough to keep it in first place, which makes it only the second album this year to spend its first two weeks in the top spot, following Morgan Wallen‘s “Dangerous.” Will Eilish go three for three on next week’s chart?
Our users already placed their bets for the Billboard tracking week currently underway, and most of them said Eilish would remain on top. But Olivia Rodrigo‘s “Sour” was number-two this week with 61,000 units after 12 weeks on the chart, so with that kind of staying power she certainly has the potential to climb back to number-one for its fourth nonconsecutive week. You will need a vaccination to get in, but New York’s Central Park Homecoming Concert is still following social distancing protocols, New York City Mayor Bill Diblasio announced. Performances will be spread out among all the boroughs, leading up to the main event. Legendary concert promoter Clive Davis followed suit, announcing the artists will be spread out among multiple genres, some produced through the Universal Hip Hop Museum.
The diverse mix will include the NY Philharmonic, Elvis Costello, LL Cool J, Patti Smith, The Killers, Wyclef Jean, Journey, and Earth, Wind & Fire. Jennifer Hudson is a main act, and not because she shares her name with the river.

The series also reviews the mythology around the larger-than-life Hemingway, who penned such classic novels as “The Sun Also Rises,” “A Farewell to Arms,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “The Old Man and the Sea,” to reveal the truth behind the bravado.
Feature film adaptations of Hemingway’s works had mixed results. Hemingway Bff Gary Cooper excelled in 1932’s “A Farewell to Arms” and 1943’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” receiving an Oscar nomination for the latter. John Garfield gave one of his strongest performance in 1950’s superb noir “The Breaking Point,” based...
