UK documentary festival Sheffield Doc/Fest (June 4-13) will open with the European premiere of Questlove’s acclaimed Summer Of Soul, which scooped the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance this year. The doc chronicles the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival and will be released by Searchlight Pictures and Hulu this summer (in cinemas and on Disney+ Star in the UK).
The festival will close with The Story of Looking, the latest documentary from prolific filmmaker Mark Cousins. This time out, Cousins turns his lens to looking at the world’s complexities, contradictions and beauty in the context of people’s long confinements at home and constant assault from images. Cousins will also appear in conversation at the event.
In a first for Doc/Fest, the event will also screen its opening night (June 4) and closing (June 12) simultaneously in cinemas around the UK. At present, venues are set to re-open...

John Monk Saunders is a good example of the screenwriter-as-auteur in the sense that he had a tone (mordant, tragic) and a set of concerns (Wwi aerial combat and its effects) that were consistent throughout his work, almost to the point of claustrophobia. Saunders was an airman himself, and like his characters, he just couldn't leave it behind. A recurring theme of his work is that war is not only traumatic, but addictive. Ace of Aces is a typical work: Saunders would achieve greater glory with William A. Wellman (Wings, 1927), Howard Hawks (The Dawn Patrol, 1930) and, best of all, with William Dieterle and The Last Flight in 1931. Ace of Aces is a relatively minor-league outing. Though director J. Walter Ruben delivers a few elaborate tracking shots, the film belongs mainly to the writer and the Rko effects team—Vernon L. Walker, who worked on Citizen Kane and King Kong, stitches...

Screen Australia has committed Au$3m ($2.3m) towards fast-tracking 58 projects by female filmmakers, as part of a broader gender equality initiative.
The cash injection from Australia’s federal screen agency will fund the development of 45 film and television story ideas and 13 female-led business proposals.
Several of the projects are by women filmmakers with past professional credits but a significant number of the features come from newcomers or those making the leap from other disciplines within the industry, who might not otherwise quality for funding under the established structures.
The scheme will support the development of projects by 27 new directors and 46 first-time writers.
Among the projects financed are: Kill The Messenger, a new romantic comedy from director Samantha Lang (The Monkey’s Mask); Ride Like A Girl, a story of Australia’s most successful female jockey, which marks the directorial debut of actress Rachel Griffiths; and drama thriller Runaway, from producer Alex White and writer Mirrah Foulkes (Blue...

This airplane thriller never threatens to make sense as Neeson carries it to a denouement worthy of a murderous Miss Marple
"Nervous flyer?" asks Julianne Moore after she notices Liam Neeson fiddling nervously before take off. "It never quite goes away," Neeson replies. You don't know the half of it, lady.
The last flight Neeson was on crash-landed in the Alaskan tundra, where his fellow passengers were picked off, one by one, by a pack of ravenous grey wolves. The year before that, in Unknown, Neeson landed at Berlin Tagel Airport for a biotechnology summit only to have someone steal his wife, his identity and all respect for German traffic codes. And before that we had Taken, in which Neeson had his daughter kidnapped at Charles de Gaulle Airport by Albanian slave traffickers. Neeson and foreigners don't mix. Neeson and airports don't mix. But Neeson and foreign airports is really asking for trouble.

Warner Bros. is still looking to develop a film based on Rod Serling's iconic series The Twilight Zone. The screenplay was recently re-written by Jobey Jarrold from a script previously written by Jason Rothenberg and Anthony Peckham. Matt Reeves was attached to direct it at one point but dropped out to develop Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for Fox.
As of right now, the movie is directorless. It was previously revealed that the movie wasn't going to be an anthology like the first one made in the 80's. This one will tell one story that incorporates Twilight Zone elements. Thanks to Vulture we've got some information on what the movie will be about. "It follows a test pilot who winds up breaking the speed of light; when he puts down his craft, he discovers that he’s landed a bit late for supper — 96 years late."

Marion Cotillard has become that rarest of things, the heavily-accented superstar. While she'd cropped up in Hollywood fare like "Big Fish" and "A Good Year" before, her Oscar victory in 2008 for Edith Piaf biopic "La Vie En Rose" catapulted her onto the A-list, and since then she's mixed blockbuster fare like "Public Enemies," "Contagion" and "Inception" with smaller home-grown projects like "Little White Lies" and "The Last Flight," while somehow finding time to have her first child with partner Guillaume Canet a few months back. Next year sees examples at both ends of the scale, with a part, still shrouded in mystery, in "The Dark Knight Rises" and a dark, gruelling role in Jacques Audiard's "Rust & Bone," but at Warner Bros., where she's become something of a favorite of late, are now courting her for a return to tentpole territory, as Vulture report that...

There is a terrific exhibition of Soviet Revolutionary Movie Posters currently running, through next Friday, at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York. Of the 95 posters on display (many of which are the sole surviving examples and have never been publicly exhibited before) almost half are by Vladimir and Georgii Stenberg, my choices for the two greatest movie poster designers of all time.
Back in 1997, MoMA mounted a retrospective of the Stenberg Brothers’ work which is what turned me on to them. The catalogue, a must-have for anyone interested in movie posters and graphic design, is out of print but used copies can still be found.
Born in 1899 and 1900 to a Swedish father and a Russian mother, the brothers initially studied engineering and fine arts. Pioneers of Constructivism, they worked as sculptors, architects and designers of everything from railway carriages to theater sets to women’s shoes, always working in collaboration with each other.

French actress Marion Cotillard is rumored to be engaged to her longterm boyfriend Guillaume Canet after she was spotted wearing a diamond ring on her left hand. The 35-year-old Oscar-winner has been dating the actor/director, who was previously married to Diane Kruger, since 2007.
The notoriously private couple is now said to be moving towards marriage after Cotillard was seen wearing a sparkling band on her ring finger during an appearance at the Marrakech Film Festival in Morocco over the weekend.
Canet was married to German actress Kruger from 2001 until 2006. He has appeared on screen with Cotillard twice, in 2003's "Love Me If You Dare" and "The Last Flight" in 2009.

Paris -- European distributors, French sales agents and international press will break bread and cheese Wednesday as state film promotion organization Unifrance's 12th annual's Rendez-Vous with French cinema kicks off in Paris.
But don't expect to hear any American accents.
More than 400 film distribution execs and 120 journalists from 26 countries will join French sales reps, directors and talent for a five-day sampling of the best of Gallic cinema. U.S. buyers, however, will have to wait until Unifrance's stand-alone event in March in New York in order to sample the latest in Gallic big screen fare due to the Paris event's impossible timing.
"Were it not for Sundance running concurrently with the Paris Rdv and Berlin just a few weeks later, we're sure more American buyers would come. From talking with them, we get the strong impression they'd like to -- they're certainly welcome!" Unifrance's stateside executive director John Kochman said in an interview.

Director James Cameron's "Avatar" commanded the international circuit on the weekend, soaring to No. 1 with boxoffice of $165.5 million in its opening five days from 14,604 screens in 106 territories.
"Avatar's" actual weekend figure on the foreign circuit was $6.3 million more than the $159.2 million reported on Sunday due, said distributor 20th Century Fox, "to the unexpected increase in boxoffice from Saturday to Sunday (about 3% overall)."
Fox said the much-anticipated futuristic 3D spectacle's worldwide gross total of $242.5 million ranks as the "highest-grossing nonfranchise, nonsequel opening ever." The overseas per-screen average was $11,334.
"We are off to a great start," said Paul Hanneman, co-president of Fox Theatrical International, who noted that "Avatar," while benefiting from solid reviews overseas, had to defy tough winter weather in many European markets. On the basis of favorable word-of-mouth, Hanneman predicts that "Avatar" grosses will hold relatively strongly in the coming weeks.
