- In order to raise money to produce a play (as well as prove that the plot isn't ridiculous), Michael McCreigh makes a bet with his Uncle Carlton that he can begin in Central Park in his underwear and, without paying or borrowing for transportation, get to California in 10 days with a decent suit, $100...and a fiance. If he wins, he gets $15,000 to produce the play; if he loses, he must accept a job in his uncle's packing plant.
- Carl Bellairs and his daughter Lindsey Lane meet many years after he deserted her and her mother. They don't much like each other, but wind up working in the same nightclub. Bellairs discovers that he has some fatherly instincts and Lindsey finds out that he's not as useless as a parent as she thought.
- An ex-con, just out of prison, and his wife meet a screen writer on the train and decide that, since he's writing about crime without knowing much about it, collaborating with him would be better than starting a duck farm. Things get a bit sticky when the real gangsters show up and want to know how Hollywood knows so much about them.
