When Maximilian, who is in poor health, learns of the connection between Maren and Johann, a world collapses for him. Convinced that his enterprising daughter is in league with the building speculator, he strongly reproaches her. Maren has long had a clever idea how, with Johann's support, she can save the farm from being sold.

And so Maximilian and Maren run the risk of losing the farm for good.
