It seems obvious to most viewers that Sal is gay, yet the only one who seems to pick up on this is the one client, who is also gay. The fact is that the show is set in 1960-1962, and gay culture was a far less prominent part of the culture than it is today. Furthermore, in 1962 the kind of debonaire sophisticate behavior which Sal exhibits had not yet become associated exclusively with homosexual men.
