Canadian indie rock favorites and certified Grammy nominees (!) Alvvays rocked up to NPR to perform a set of buzzing, beatific tunes for the latest episode of Tiny Desk.
The band performed four tracks, all of which appeared on their excellent 2022 album, Blue Rev. The set opened with standout cut, “Belinda Says” — with its cheeky nod to Belinda Carlisle’s 1987 classic, “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” — followed by renditions of “Pressed,” “Very Online Guy,” and “Tile by Tile.”

Alvvays stopped by the NPR office for their long-awaited Tiny Desk Concert, performing just a handful of highlights off their still-fantastic 2022 album Blue Rev.
Even if you’ve only heard just one Alvvays song, it’s easy to tell that the band’s studio recordings and live performances both usually implement some really heavy reverb and other vocal effects. But their concert at the Tiny Desk — where such embellishments are usually frowned upon — proves that although those stylistic choices do sound nice, vocalist Molly Rankin certainly doesn’t need to hide any flaws.
The recent first-time Grammy nominees opened their four-song set with an impossibly massive rendition of “Belinda Says,” before Rankin gave some words of gratitude (and a subtle apology): “We’ve not worked up the courage to do this until today,” she said with a nervous giggle.
That lack of courage was undetectable as Alvvays ripped through “Pressed,...

Ever want to drink the best indie album of 2022? Well, you can’t, but you can now slosh it around inside a record. To commemorate the one-year anniversary of their album Blue Rev, Alvvays have announced a super-limited-edition reissue filled with the sugary alcoholic beverage the LP is named after. It sold out nearly instantly, naturally.
The Canadian band worked with the custom vinyl manufacturer Romanus Records to produce just 50 copies of the reissue, piping vodka-based cola into the vinyl to create a trippy, translucent mixture that moves throughout. “Making...

“I’m in shock,” Friday said as she came up on stage at Toronto’s Massey Hall to accept the prize. “This is something that I didn’t realize was even a possibility. I was born in Nigeria, in a small village, and now I’m here today. It just feels like a miracle.”
She added, “I’m just so happy right now.”

Lollapalooza 2023 is a wrap. During the festival’s fourth and final day, rain continued to soak Chicago’s Grant Park. Thankfully, by headlining time, the bad weather had subsided, but not before leaving plenty of puddles for festival attendees to navigate and slippery mud all around.
It wouldn’t have been a proper Lollapalooza without hometown rapper Chance the Rapper popping up at some point during the weekend. He did just that during Joey Bada$$’s set earlier on Sunday evening, performing “No Problem” and “The Highs & the Lows.”

Back in the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, Keanu Reeves co-founded and played bass in a grunge band called Dogstar. After quietly reuniting last summer, the group has announced they will be “rolling out some new music” this summer, to be followed by some live shows.
Update — May 10th: BottleRock Festival has revealed Dogstar will give their first major comeback performance on Saturday, May 27th.
Last week, they shared a preview of a rooftop photoshoot on Instagram, and apparently, the reception was so strong that Dogstar couldn’t wait to share more news. “Thank you everyone for the kind comments. We are overjoyed to see such a response!” they wrote in the comments of the post. “Honestly, didn’t expect this. It makes us want to play out even more.”

Maggie Rogers has unveiled a Summer 2023 North American headlining tour featuring Soccer Mommy and Alvvays as support on select dates.
Fittingly titled “Summer of ’23 Tour,” the 12-city trek kicks off on July 24th in Charlotte, North Carolina. It will make subsequent stops in Nashville, New York City, Toronto, Los Angeles, and more before wrapping in Washington, DC on September 29th. See Rogers’ full touring itinerary below.
As for ticketing, Rogers is (briefly) going old school: Tomorrow, April 7th, her team will be running a one-day, in-person pre-sale at local box offices “in an effort to eliminate bots and lower fees.” All price tiers will be available, along with exclusive merch. Rogers herself will be at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg selling tickets to her New York City show; check her website for further information regarding in-person pre-sale in each stop of the tour.

As if we needed another reason to like Keanu Reeves, the John Wick star has revealed his fandom for the Canadian indie pop group Alvvays.
“I like me a good pop song, and I like me a kind of inventiveness in it,” Reeves said in a recent interview with NME. “I think the lead singer [Molly Rankin], she’s great, and the textures of it.”
When asked about what he’s been listening to lately, Reeves mentioned the band’s 2022 release Blue Rev, which we named one of our Top 50 Albums of last year. Though he owns it digitally, the actor expressed a strong desire to have it “on LP.” Despite his virtual ownership, he joked about the album being his “favorite album to be.”
“Can I say that? Because I love that band,” he harped. “I mean, I love bass guitar and drums and I like their energy.” Reeves...

Keanu Reeves loves Canadian indie pop band Alvvays.
The Canadian actor recently spoke about listening to the band during a Reddit Ama, before he was asked about being a fan of them in a chat with NME.
He told Alex Flood, “I don’t have their new record. I bought it digitally but I don’t have it on vinyl,” when asked what his favourite album was at the moment.
“So it’s your favourite album to-be?” Flood questioned of Blue Rev.
Reeves responded, “Yeah. Can I say that? Because I love that band.”

Origins is our recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Canadian duo Babygirl breaks down what inspired their new single, “Sore Eyes.”
There’s a comforting sweetness to Babygirl’s music, even in the most fraught phrases.
The Toronto duo, comprised of Kiki Frances and Cameron Bright and one of our Rising Artists to Watch for 2023, have a knack for wistful, dreamy indie pop. While their nostalgic sound recalls the warm malaise of ’90s alternative rock, the band’s lyrics strike a contemporary chord, blending sad, solitary images with moments of crystalline clarity and emotional weight.
Now, after their terrific 2021 EP Losers Weepers, Babygirl are back with “Sore Eyes,” the first single off their upcoming EP Be Still My Heart, out April 14th. The track feels apt for the transition from winter to spring, and the sweet relief of...
