Outside Los Angeles’ AMC Grove the afternoon of March 3, entertainment professionals and mall-goers alike were treated to a unique Hollywood spectacle as Jack Black, Bryan Cranston, Ke Huy Quan, Kyle Gass and more showed off their best martial arts moves on the “Kung Fu Panda 4” red carpet. Tenacious D’s cover of “…Baby One More Time,” which recently went viral on social media and is featured in the film’s end credits, played as bandmates Black and Gass shot scenes for the song’s forthcoming music video.
On the carpet, Black explained to reporters how the cover and video shoot came to be: “The director Mike [Mitchell] said, ‘Hey, we’d love to have a Tenacious D song at the end, will you do a song?’ And I was like, ‘Can we do Britney Spears?’ and he was like, ‘Yes,’ and he said that he wanted to do ‘…Hit Me...

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" is the most contentious of the first three "Indiana Jones" movies. Director Steven Spielberg's filmmaking instincts are sharp as ever, as is Harrison Ford's charisma, and even before the mine tunnel sequence, the film moves like a roller coaster in the best way possible.
But in aping early 20th-century pulp, the film inherits their exoticized distortions of non-American cultures. "Temple of Doom" is mostly set in British-occupied India, but the villains are not these colonizers. No, Indy and co. face off against an indigenous threat: the vicious Thuggee cult that enslaves children and makes human sacrifices to the Hindu god Kali. I'm admittedly not an expert on Indian culture (nor were the writers of the movie), so I'll defer to one who is; Indian-Canadian writer Saffron Maeve has taken the film to task over at Little White Lies. Otherwise, I'll let...

Among the various distinctions “Everything Everywhere All at Once” incurred by winning seven awards at the 95th Oscars was becoming the first film in a dozen years (and ninth overall) to conquer both supporting acting categories. This rare occurrence involved Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis preventing their respective “The Banshees of Inisherin” competitors from accomplishing the same goal, as the sets of featured nominees from “Belfast” and “The Power of the Dog” had both failed to do one year earlier. Now, two more pairs of cast mates – who happen to hail from the two highest-grossing live action movies of 2023 – are gunning for entry into this exclusive club.

The premiere of Loki season 2 is nearly upon us, and Disney has released a new video which focuses on one of the most exciting additions to the cast: Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once).
From just ninety seconds of video, Ke Huy Quan’s enthusiasm is infectious, and I can’t wait to see what he brings to Loki season 2. The actor plays Time Variance Authority tech expert Ob, a quirky character who is responsible for keeping every piece of tech at the Tva running smoothly.
Loki executive producer Kevin Wright has explained how quickly they had to move in order to sign the Oscar-winning actor up for the show. Marvel casting director Sarah Halley Finn caught an early screening of Everything Everywhere All at Once and suggested they make Quan an offer as soon as possible. “I think Kevin Feige made a call maybe April 12, just to follow up and say,...

Since DuQuan Myers died six years ago, he’s come back in ways that are mysterious and magical and hard to explain. It started the day of his funeral, when the doves that were released over his coffin refused to fly home, perching instead in the oak tree just above his grave as if witnessing a visitation. Then there was that drive to El Paso, Texas, when — not once but twice — the windshield wipers started swiping just as the satellite radio cut out midsong, switching to the tune Myers’ sister...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding just a little bit wider, this time with an Oscar-winning Best Supporting Actor joining “Loki” Season 2.
The first trailer for the second installment of the critically acclaimed Disney+ series shows “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star Ke Huy Quan trying to help Loki (Tom Hiddleston) contain himself amid shifting multiverses. Quan also stars in Disney+ series “American Born Chinese.”
The official synopsis for “Loki” Season 2 reads: Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes, and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.
The concept of “free will” around antagonist Loki’s actions, particularly in the first “Thor” and early “Avengers” films is expected to further complicate the shapeshifter’s MCU persona in the next phase of the franchise.
Owen Wilson, Wunmi Mosaku, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw also reprise their respective roles for the second season.

Tom Hiddleston is back and ready for more mayhem in the official trailer for Season 2 of the Disney+ original series “Loki.”
The trailer sees Hiddleston reprising his titular role as the god of mischief, sharing the screen with returning actor Owen Wilson and new cast member Ke Huy Quan. Set after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” the series will continue to follow the antihero as he works with the Time Variance Authority to track down superhero variants stoking chaos in different timelines of the multiverse.
Wilson reprises the role of Mobius M. Mobius, though his character arc in Season 2 takes a drastic turn given the loss of some of his memory in the Season 1 finale. Other returning actors include Eugene Cordero, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, Tara Strong, Rafael Casal and more.

The bronze medal went to American pair Delaney Schnell and Jessica Parratto, who finished on 294.42.

In the fall of 2021, Olivia Colman scored her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite not having succeeded on her Oscar bid for “The Father” that spring. This made her the 16th performer to prevail at the Emmys directly after going home empty-handed at the Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. Now that the 2023 Emmy nominations ballots have been released, eight of the 16 actors who lost Oscars at the most recent ceremony officially have shots at joining Colman on this list.
Gold Derby’s Emmy odds currently indicate that the man and woman with the best hopes of following in Colman’s footsteps are Brian Tyree Henry and Hong Chau, who just received their first career Academy Award nominations for their respective supporting turns in “Causeway” and “The Whale.” Henry is seeking his second comedy supporting Emmy notice for “Atlanta,” while Chau could pull double...

Hollywood is littered with unlikely casting stories. It has become less and less common for unknown actors to break out in starring movie roles these days since those are mostly going to established names. If you want to break in, you pretty much gotta make your name on a TV or streaming series first, but when you do hear about these iconic roles, most of the time there's a good story behind how these stars landed their breakout part.
There's Johnny Depp driving his friend to the audition for this little horror movie called "A Nightmare on Elm Street" where he ended up reading for and getting the part of the final girl's boyfriend, or how Ke Huy Quan was found by Spielberg for "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" when the crew was combing Los Angeles-area schools for kids right for the part and even then they first auditioned Quan's brother.

Actor Ke Huy Quan says portraying an American born Chinese in the upcoming series of the same name “scared the hell” out of him.
Hollywood has had considerable feats of Asian representation this year ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’s’ historic Oscar wins ‘Beef’ and on May 24, ‘American Born Chinese’.
Huy Quan was hesitant about joining the series’ Asian-led ensemble, reports ‘Variety’.
“I remember when I first heard about this character when I was offered the role, it scared the hell out of me. In fact, I actually passed on it because I told our creative team that this is the type of portrayal that we do not want to see in 2023,” Quan said during a post-screening Q&a at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night.

With few Asian roles, the former child star spent years on the sidelines until his success in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once put him back on the red carpet
Even if Ke Huy Quan fails to win a Bafta, his joyful Instagram account and own personal Hollywood happy ending have already secured him the unofficial accolade of “2023 awards season breakout star”.
Quan – up for a British Academy award for his role as affable laundromat owner Waymond Wang in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once – arrived in America as a refugee from Vietnam in 1979. Aged 10, he tagged along with his brother to an open audition for a film and ended up winning the role that turned him into one of the most recognisable child stars of the 1980s. He played Chinese orphan Short Round in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom – Harrison Ford taught him to swim during the shoot in Sri Lanka.

At the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Wednesday night, eight performers who, at different stages of their careers, experienced a big screen breakthrough in 2022, were feted with Virtuoso Awards: Austin Butler (Elvis), Kerry Condon (The Banshees Of Inisherin), Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Nina Hoss (Tár), Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Jeremy Pope (The Inspection), Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Jeremy Strong (Armageddon Time).
The Virtuoso Awards gathering at Santa Barbara’s historic Arlington Theatre was moderated, as always, by TCM’s Dave Karger, who spoke on stage with each honoree individually before convening the entire group for a conversation.
Strong, an Emmy winner for Succession, said of being asked to play director James Gray’s father in Armageddon Time, “The responsibility felt massive,” noting that the character was “A Jewish Stanley Kowalski with a PhD.”

2022 should be remembered in the annals of history as the year of Ke Huy Quan. While the actor got his start in Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and the Spielberg produced "The Goonies" directed by Richard Donner, Quan was never given the opportunity to transition from the world of child acting to a successful career in his adulthood. He had appearances in films like "Encino Man" with Brendan Fraser and on the show "Head of the Class," but just as quickly as he appeared, Quan disappeared from the public spotlight.
It's important to acknowledge that Quan's leave of absence from the cinematic system was not his choice, because, despite his incredibly impressive resume as a child, the Vietnamese-born Chinese-American actor was not offered opportunities where he could thrive. One might think that the only path to winning an Oscar is to do good enough work to be respected and appreciated by your academy member peers – or just have the right friends in the academy’s actors branch, huh? But there’s something that’s almost as important in getting through the months and months of awards campaigning, and that’s a narrative.
Narratives are something that are often mentioned as we get closer to Oscar night, but it’s something that runs throughout the life of a movie from whenever or wherever it debuts through whatever junkets or interviews are done over the course of a movie’s life on the way to Oscar night.
For instance, how many times had we heard the story of “The King’s Speech” screenwriter David Seidler on the way to that movie’s four Oscar wins, including for Best Picture? Born in...

The Academy Awards mark the culmination of Hollywood’s awards season. And with the 2023 Oscars coming up fast, fans and pundits alike are eager to see who’ll win the biggest prizes. Although many of this year’s nominees have been talked about throughout the awards season, the Academy had some surprises in store, especially among the acting nods. One nominee — Causeway star Brian Tyree Henry — stood out.
Oscars 2023 is filled with many first-time acting nominees
Throughout Oscars history, numerous stars have routinely popped up among a given year’s list of nominees. For instance, actors like Daniel Day-Lewis and Meryl Streep have three Oscars each and countless nominations between them. Likewise, the 2023 Academy Award nominations see the return of past winner Cate Blanchett and five-time nominee Michelle Williams. But aside from those two, the four acting categories are dominated by first-time nominees.

Everything Everywhere All at Once delights casual audiences and critics without being based on a pre-existing IP. Praise of the movie centers on the incredible performance of Michelle Yeoh as Evelyn. The role finally gives an undercelebrated actor the career coronation she has long deserved.
But for her co-star, Ke Huy Quan, his star turn as Waymond Wang showcases what he and the world missed out on in the decades since he was a working actor. Quan played key roles in timeless blockbusters as a kid but gave up on his dream due to racism in Hollywood.
It took over 20 years for him to find the inspiration to give acting another go. Quan made the absolute most of his second chance. Now, he can have the opportunities that hid from him in the ’90s.

Fans of the 2022 existential romp, Everything Everywhere All at Once may wonder if they’ve seen the face of Waymond Wang before. In fact, they probably did. Actor Ke Huy Quan starred in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom when he was a teenager.
Now 51, a Golden Globe winner, and an Oscar nominee, Quan says he always wanted to revisit one of his ’80s movies characters but never got the chance. Which role would he happily play again? Here’s what we know:
Movie-goers still recognize Ke Huy Quan 30 years later
Moviegoers got their first glimpse of Quan when his character, Short Round, tried to pick Indiana Jones‘ pocket at the Gung Ho bar in Shanghai. In lieu of having the boy arrested on the spot, Jones captured him with a snap of his bullwhip.
The adventure of a lifetime. Nearly 40 years after Indiana Jones and the Goonies, Ke Huy Quan & Steven Spielberg reunite.

In 2021, former child star Ke Huy Quan (1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and 1985’s “The Goonies”) ended his two-decade acting hiatus by appearing in the Netflix movie “Finding ‘Ohana.” He then took on his ninth feature film role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which has made him one of the season’s most-lauded individuals. His next industry stop is the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where he stands a strong chance of achieving both supporting actor and ensemble victories.
Along with “The Banshees of Inisherin” pair Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan, Quan is one of three overall SAG Awards newcomers in this year’s supporting actor lineup. They and fellow nominee Paul Dano (“The Fabelmans”) are also going against each other in the ensemble category, where Dano previously triumphed as part of the cast of 2006’s “Little Miss Sunshine.” The last supporting slot is filled by Eddie Redmayne...

In addition “Braveheart” (1995), “Gangs of New York” (2002) and three “Harry Potter” movies, Brendan Gleeson’s acting resume include several collaborations each with filmmaking brothers John Michael and Martin McDonagh. His and the latter writer-director’s third project, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” has led to his very first Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for both supporting actor and ensemble. Now well into the fourth decade of his career, the sexagenarian could make history as the oldest performer to win two SAG trophies for a single film.
In the supporting category, Gleeson is competing against three others who are also up for the ensemble prize: Paul Dano (“The Fabelmans”), Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and his “Banshees” castmate, Barry Keoghan. Everything Everywhere All At Once is one of the best movies of 2022 and rightly hailed as a career coronation for its lead, Michelle Yeoh. But the performance of Ke Huy Quan as Waymond Wang is also extraordinary, especially considering he hadn’t acted in over two decades.
Quan quit acting due to the tenuous position of Asian performers in Hollywood but felt inspired to return after the runaway success of another film that starred Yeoh.
Still, the road to his casting in Everything Everywhere hinged on something he had no control over. Quan recently explained in an interview that the road to Waymond was paved with Andrew Yang memes.

International action legends Jackie Chan and Michelle Yeoh have been having a fun sibling-rivalry-esque friendship ever since their collaboration in Police Story 3: Supercop. When Michelle co-starred with Chan, she was determined to compete with him with her own fight prowess and death-defying stunts (which includes an infamous sequence where Yeoh jumps onto a moving train with a motorcycle). According to The Independent, Yeoh reveals that after her Oscar nomination for Everything Everywhere All at Once was announced, Chan had texted her to reveal that he had been approached to do the movie.
Yeoh tells CNN, “It was written for a man, when [directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, known collectively as the Daniels] set out to do this. They wrote it that way, with Jackie, and me as the wife. So the roles were completely reversed. I remember Jackie texting me and saying, ‘Congratulations! You know, your boys came to see me first.

The acting categories this awards season have seen mixed results over the past couple of months — except for Best Supporting Actor. Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) has been on a remarkably consistent winning streak, and since the nominations were announced on January 24 he has become the strongest front-runner in any of the acting races in our odds. So is he the one winner we can count on when awards are handed out on March 12?

Has there been anything more satisfying to watch than the long-overdue career resurgence of Ke Huy Quan? If there is, we don't want to know about it. Returning in Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's mind-bender "Everything Everywhere All At Once," the former child star famed for playing Indy's kid sidekick Short Round in 1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and the gadget-wielding Data in 1985's nostalgia classic "The Goonies" had all but disappeared from screens -- and movie fans were worse off for it.

After taking home numerous Critics' Choice and Golden Globe Awards, "Everything Everywhere All at Once" continues to earn well-deserved accolades. On Jan. 24, the comedy-drama scored 11 Oscar nominations, including one for best picture. Each of the core cast members, who are all first-time Oscar nominees, earned individual recognitions for their performances: Michelle Yeoh made history as the first Asian best actress nominee, Ke Huy Quan is up for best supporting actor, and both Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis were honored in the best supporting actress category.
In addition, writing-directing duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheiner, also known as the Daniels, were nominated for best director and original screenplay. Centering an Asian American immigrant family, the film also received nods for its original score, costume design, and film editing.

There is plenty to grouse about with the Academy Award nominations, as there is every year. For 2023, in particular, the underrepresentation of films made by women and people of color is fairly egregious. I look through every single category, and there is at least one nomination I disagree with. That is, with one exception: Best Supporting Actor. Now, the five nominees do not perfectly align with who I would select for those slots, but that doesn't mean I outright reject any of these performances. Quite the opposite, I greatly admire all of them.
Four out of the five actors nominated this year have never been nominated for an Oscar before, and the other, Judd Hirsch, hasn't been nominated in over 40 years. There usually are snubs to contend with once the Academy Awards nominations drop every January. That eventuality, we're prepared for. But sometimes a really great nomination catches us off-guard; we're ready for the Academy to let us down, after all, but rarely ready for them to delight us. They've got a history. In this year's nominees crop, though, there was one name that did surprise me, though the performance is wholly deserving: Barry Keoghan for "The Banshees of Inisherin."
You see, the Best Supporting Actor category is stacked. Alongside Keoghan — who is celebrating his first Oscar nomination — we have "Causeway" star Brian Tyreese Henry (another pleasant surprise), "The Fabelmans" star Judd Hirsch, Keoghan's "Banshees of Inisherin" costar Brendan Gleeson, and the incredible "Everything Everywhere All At Once" star Ke Huy Quan. The 2023 Oscar nominations were a mixed bag in terms of diversity — with no Black actors nominated in the lead acting categories and women shut out for best director — but there was one particular milestone worth applauding. With nods for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu (all for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Hong Chau (“The Whale”), the number of Asian acting nominees reached the most recognized in a single year ever at four nominations.
This figure surpasses the lineup from 2004, which included Indian and Iranian actors Ben Kingsley and Shohreh Aghdashloo (both for “House of Sand and Fog”) and Japanese star Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai”).

On Tuesday, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan finally became Oscar nominees, thanks to their celebrated performances in this year’s awards season breakout, “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. For the 95th Academy Awards, Yeoh was nominated for Best Actress for her turn as Evelyn Quan Wang while Quan was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for playing Yeoh’s husband, Waymond.
Not only that, but Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu also picked up their first-ever Oscar nominations, with both co-stars being included in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Yeoh and Quan’s nominations, meanwhile, come after a string of major nominations and wins throughout the 2023 awards season, with both winning at the Golden Globes and picking up nominations for the BAFTAs, Independent Spirit Awards and the SAG Awards.

Just three years after Parasite swept every one of its possible Oscars but received nary a nomination in any of the acting categories, fellow unlikely awards favorite Everything Everywhere All at Once is responsible for helping Asian actors achieve a historic high of four nominations in a single year.
Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) will lead most stories this morning with her expected yet still historic nomination for best actress, the first woman who identifies as Asian to be recognized in that category in the Academy’s 95-year-history. (She’s joined by Blonde’s Ana de Armas, the first best actress nominee of Cuban descent.)
Supporting actor frontrunner Ke Huy Quan, whom Hollywood couldn’t find a substantive role for for nearly 40 years, is the first actor from Vietnam to be recognized by the Academy, and the second ethnically Chinese supporting actor to be nominated since Haing S.
