Sanya Malhotra’s latest movie, Kathal, co-produced by Guneet Monga Kapoor’s Sikhya Entertainment and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms, is one of the very few movies with an intentionally absurd storyline. It is a satirical comedy about a local politician whose prized jackfruits go missing and a young police officer who is adamant to solve this bizarre case to prove herself.
The story is inspired by similar real-life incidents that have happened in the past, like an official almost draining an entire dam to retrieve a phone accidentally dropped by the owner while trying to take a selfie, or an Ias Officer that cut practice sessions at a Delhi stadium short so that he could walk his dog.
As absurd as the story might sound to many, the cast and crew vouch that Kathal is not very far from reality.

Hindi cinema has very rarely excelled in the satire genre. The only movie I can think of that is still considered one of the best satires is Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, which was released 40 years ago. Pk and Peepli Live are some recent examples of decent satire. Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery, the latest Netflix India original, is a decent attempt to make satire a part of our discourse, and rightly so because it is high time this form of comedy is utilized instead of relying on either slapstick or situational comedy, both of which have been overused in this industry. Directed by Yashowardhan Mishra, the movie is a tale of two exotic jackfruits getting stolen from an Mla’s home, with the entire police force of the town being assigned to look for them. The police force’s mind-boggling investigation is the charm of the movie. Will they get their hands on them?...

Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery is a film directed by Yashowardhan Mishra and starring Sanya Malhotra and Anant Joshi.
Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery is an entertaining film that, with its relaxed and uncomplicated good vibes, can make you spend a pleasant tv time.
It is more charming than good quality, but it has enough of both to, without getting too complicated, entertain us with its slightly absurd humor.
Or not so “slightly”.
Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery About the movie

Yes, you won’t take it seriously and neither will the police, in an...
