Lots of frisky horses darted out of the gates at the Telluride and Venice Film Festivals, tripping up the Oscar derby — just the way we like it. But which ones really broke out of the pack?
All Oscarologists knew that “First Man” would be great – director Damien Chazelle never disappoints – but, yeowsa, he blasted through the stratosphere of high Oscar hopes again. Now it is Gold Derby’s official frontrunner for Best Picture based upon the combination of predictions by our Experts, Editors, Top 24 Users, Top 24 All Stars and all Users.
But hold your horses, Derbyites! “First Man” is tied for first place with “Roma,” if you only weigh the Oscar predictions of our Experts: four votes each, if you only count predictions made since Sept. 1.
Team “First Man”: Keith Simanton (IMDb), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), my Gold Derby colleague Susan Wloszczyna and me.

Six out of the 10 Experts making Oscar predictions at Gold Derby put “BlacKkKlansman” out front to win Best Picture at this early leg of the race. See how they rank their predicted nominees according to likelihood of winning. When all of the Experts’ picks are combined, this is the collective list.
Currently, “BlacKKKlansman” has an impressive lead considering its hefty competition – including major new flicks by Oscar-winning directors Alfonso Cuaron (“Roma”) and Damien Chazelle (“First Man”) – but Spike Lee’s new drama about a black police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s probably benefits from being first out of the gate. It’s now playing in theaters, trumpeted by upbeat film reviews (96 score at Rotten Tomatoes) while most rival ponies are still in the stable.

Luca Guadagnino‘s queer coming-of-age story “Call Me By Your Name” was nominated for four Oscars Sunday night, but only came away with one victory for James Ivory‘s adapted screenplay. The film lost Best Picture to “The Shape of Water,” Timothee Chalamet lost Best Actor to Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”), and Sufjan Stevens‘ “The Mystery of Love” lost Best Song to Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez‘s “Remember Me” (“Coco”). One day later, outraged “Call Me By Your Name” fans have taken to Twitter to share their feelings over the film being “robbed” in these three Oscar races. Here’s just a small sampling of their comments:
Matt Jacobs: “Timothee Chalamet did more in these few seconds than any other actor did in 100 minutes last year, but carry on.”
Spencer Althouse: “Sorry But Timothee Chalamet Gave The Best Performance Of The Year.”
ramone: “I knew Timothee would...

In a twist that no one saw coming, Quincy Jones has claimed in a new interview that he once dated Ivanka Trump.
After calling his former acquaintance Donald Trump a “megalomaniac, narcissistic” and “crazy motherf–ker” in a sit-down with Vulture, the legendary music producer added as an aside, “I used to date Ivanka, you know.”
Vulture’s David Marchese spoke for all of us when he asked: “Wait, really?”
Jones went on to claim that he and Ivanka dated 12 years ago, after she asked Tommy Hilfiger to set up a dinner for them. Jones is now 84 and Ivanka is 36. Twelve years ago,...
