"No one's ever really written anything like it since." Paramount is releasing this music history documentary The Day The Music Died: American Pie streaming on Paramount+ next week. We're just catching up with this trailer and considering it looks like a good doc it's worth featuring. Fifty years ago, Don McLean's "American Pie" entered music history. It was a tumultuous time for the country, with political upheaval, civil unrest, a generational divide, and social turmoil. A half-century may have gone by, some things never change... including the enduring popularity of "American Pie." It's an extraordinary, wide-ranging look at the creation of the song -- but also its inspiration: the tragic plane crash that killed Buddy Holly. It examines the social upheaval & political unrest of the late 60s, including interviews with Garth Brooks, Brian Wilson, Jade Bird and "Weird Al" Yankovic, it's a kaleidoscopic journey through the evolution and legacy...

The Head and the Heart have released “Virginia (Wind in the Night),” the second track from their upcoming album, Every Shade of Blue, out April 29 via Warner.
”Being from Virginia, for me this song represents a long and winding relationship to place — a place that is grounding,” singer Jonathan Russell said in a statement about the Jesse Shatkin-produced track. “I’m often drawing on my life through symbolism as a way into someone else’s psyche. It’s part of my search for a deeper connection without having to compare our experiences directly.

2022 Grammys Best New Artist preview: Who to look out for Besides likely front-runner Olivia Rodrigo
With winners ranging from The Beatles to Adele, the Grammy for Best New Artist is an exclusive honor that every up-and-coming artist wishes to have. While the award has certainly gone to some questionable picks in hindsight, it seems like the Grammys are back on track with Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, and Megan Thee Stallion winning back-to-back-to-back. But will the 2022 winner live up to the expectations placed on them? How will the lineup look without anonymous nomination review committees choosing those Wtf picks we’ve gotten in recent years? Let’s dive deeper and consider some of this year’s possibilities.

Woodstock 50 runs from August 16 though 18, Woodstock's 50th anniversary weekend, Aug. 16-18. It is happening in Watkins Glen, N.Y., about 115 miles northwest of the original site.
“We’ve lined up artists who won’t just entertain but will remind the world that music has the power to bring people together, to heal, to move us to action and to tell the stories of a generation,” Michael Lang, who was the co-founder and original promoter of the 1969 Woodstock Festival," said in a statement. “Our hope is that today,...

The day after the Academy Awards, Jade Bird has taken her own stab at the realities of cinematic creation, embodying the role of a tireless stuntwoman in the new video for her song “I Get No Joy,” from her forthcoming self-titled debut LP. In bright red coveralls and silver go-go boots, Bird repeatedly hops behind the wheel of a Pontiac Firebird and intentionally wrecks it, a makeup crew tidying up the blood that runs down her nose before sending her back into the car to do it all over again.

Tracks by Maren Morris, Gangstagrass, Jared Deck and Patty Griffin are among the 10 must-hear songs this week.
Yola, “Faraway Look”
Produced by Dan Auerbach, this country-soul showcase is cut from the same cloth as Petula Clark’s “Downtown,” with orchestral strings that swoon and a retro-minded chorus that would have likely earned a standing ovation from Ed Sullivan’s studio audience. Coupled with the previousl -released “Ride Out in the Country,” the song helps whip up more buzz for Yola’s upcoming debut, Walk Through Fire.

After announcing the official arrival date for her debut album earlier this month, Jade Bird has released a new track from the anticipated LP, which is set for release on April 19th via Glassnote Records.
To coincide with the self-titled album’s announcement, the up-and-coming British singer-songwriter has unveiled “I Get No Joy,” an upbeat rocker that Bird says is about “the stream of thought that runs through your head at all times as an overthinker.”
“Psychotic, hyponotic, erotic, which box is your thing?” the 21-year-old sings in rapid succession halfway through,...

Jade Bird, the English singer-songwriter who is bridging the gap between country-folk and indie-pop, has announced her debut album. Jade Bird will be released April 19th via Glassnote Records.
The follow-up to the 21-year-old’s Ep Something American, the album includes the bouncy lead single “Love Has All Been Done Before,” whose chorus calls to mind the sing-alongs of early Oasis,” and her breakthrough song “Lottery.” Bird wrote all 12 of the album’s tracks, fulfilling the goal she shared with Rolling Stone in August.

There’s nothing quite like a good rock & roll howl, and Jade Bird packs an arena-worthy one on her new single “Love Has All Been Done Before,” the video for which is out now. Sandwiching some pensive acoustic verses, in which she flings lyrics as fast as she moves her fingers, between a chorus that’s the next best thing to an Oasis reunion, Bird brings the tune homebound for the Kate Moross-directed clip: namely, she and her band preform it in an old London house surrounded by tacky wallpaper,...

British singer-songwriter Jade Bird puts her spin on the Bangles’ 1986 hit “Walk Like an Egyptian” for a new Spotify Singles session, along with her own tune “Uh Huh.”
In its original incarnation, “Walk Like an Egyptian” was already a speedy number, with a drum beat that leaves the other instruments hustling to keep up. Bird somehow makes it even faster, modulating it up to a different key and setting the tempo somewhere near punk, while the drums pound out a Bo Diddley-style rhythm. Rather than a note-for-note replication, it’s a streamlined version,...

“I’m just an ordinary 20-year-old girl,” Jade Bird says with a shrug. “There’s nothing you can’t connect with about that.”
A quickly-growing audience seems to agree. The English singer-songwriter’s debut Ep, Something American, arrived last July on Glassnote Records, the indie label that launched Mumford & Sons, Phoenix and Chvrches in the U.S. Her recent single “Lottery,” a heartfelt romantic plea (“You used to tell me that love is a lottery…Are you still betting on me?”), hit Number 1 on Billboard‘s Adult Alternative Songs chart in April,...

Backstage Sunday afternoon at the Stagecoach Festival, Garth Brooks half-heard a question being addressed to his wife, Trisha Yearwood, and jumped in. “Was this about women in country music and the lack of them right now? Hell, yeah, I want in on this,” he said. “I can tell you this: Boys are stupid. We just are… I miss (women’s) voices. We have plenty of space for them on country radio. Let’s get the females back here so our format becomes living and intelligent more than it is right now.”

Brooks’ sentiments are clearly shared by the fest’s producer, Goldenvoice, as Stagecoach typically presents a rosier and more inclusive picture of the genre each year than other purely commercial indicators would suggest. Sexism? Ageism? Authenticity-ism? It’s easy to imagine that none of these are problems afflicting country when...
