The horror franchise’s original cast is back in Insidious: The Red Door, playing in theaters now and directed by and starring Patrick Wilson.
In the film, “To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh (Wilson) and a college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before.”
Wilson, who also pulled triple duty singing with Ghost for end credit track “Stay”, spoke with Bloody Disgusting about the scare-crafting on the fifth Insidious entry.
The Red Door‘s jump scares play with sound, often removing the music cues signaling an impending scare altogether and shaking up the familiar pattern. When asked about his approach to crafting scares, Wilson got candid. “I wanted different types of scares and I’ll be honest, some didn’t work out as well as I wanted, usually because of time,” Wilson explains.
He continues, “That’s usually how it happens.

Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth film in the Insidious horror franchise, is now in theatres (you can read our review Here) – and it had a very successful opening weekend, drawing in $32.65 million at the domestic box office and $64 million worldwide on a budget that’s said to be around $16 million. Sony is probably feeling very glad that they already have the spin-off Thread: An Insidious Tale in the works, with Jeremy Slater writing/directing and Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani attached to star. While examining the film’s success, Deadline revealed that there was a point when the filmmakers were concerned that the movie wasn’t scary enough, so there were reshoots to enhance the jump scares!
Deadline revealed, “the first cut of Insidious: The Red Door was looking pale, and in need of jump scares with the filmmakers looking to push the release. For Blumhouse, Insidious was a...

Hold onto your lanterns, horror fans, because the Insidious franchise is back with its fifth installment, Insidious: The Red Door. This time, actor Patrick Wilson takes the helm as director, aiming to deliver thrills while delving into the intricate dynamics of the Lambert family. Though it falls slightly short of its predecessors, this film manages to offer a handful of effective scares and characters that may not fully come alive but still contribute to a haunting trip to the movies.

Sony/Screen Gems/Blumhouse’s “Insidious: The Red Door” is beating both “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and its own box office projections to take the No. 1 spot at the box office, earning $15 million from 3,188 theaters on its opening day as industry estimates now have it earning $31 million this weekend.
Earlier this week, independent projections had the fifth “Insidious” film earning a $22-24 million opening. Instead, “The Red Door” — a film that marks the directorial debut of series star Patrick Wilson and concludes the story of his character, Josh Lambert — is set to pass the $29.5 million opening of “Insidious: The Last Key” in 2018 to set a new high for the horror franchise. It is just above the $30.4 million opening of fellow Blumhouse production “M3GAN” earlier this year.

Jason Blum is astonished that the 'Insidious' franchise has lasted so long. The 54-year-old producer is involved in the latest movie 'Insidious: The Red Door' and is surprised that the series has continued for five installments after a challenging start.Asked if foresaw the success of the series, James told Joe.ie: "100 per cent no. When the first one opened, it actually opened to a relatively low number."Our partner thought it was a DVD movie and was going to go straight to video and I said, 'I think it's probably a little bit better than that.'"It's a fair question to ask and neither one of us thought I'd be here talking about this movie 13 years later."The Blumhouse Productions chief believes that the lack of "high concept" in the franchise – which follows the demon-haunted Lambert family – has helped it become so popular.Jason...

It’s been ten years since Patrick Wilson last stepped into The Further, but the actor returned for Insidious: The Red Door. Not only did Wilson reprise his role of Josh Lambert, but he’s also made his feature directorial debut with the Insidious sequel. Just how did that come about? Turns out that all he had to do… was ask.

Is there a better “horror movie dad” than Patrick Wilson? Wilson returns to the role of Josh Lambert for the third time in “Insidious: The Red Door,” which sees its official theatrical release on Friday, July 7 in the United States.
To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh Lambert and his son, a college-aged Dalton Lambert must go deeper into The Further than ever before, facing their family’s dark past and a host of new and more horrifying terrors that lurk behind the mysterious red door.
This is the first time that Wilson will step behind the camera for the franchise, directing the movie as well as starring in it. Critics have thus far not been kind to the movie on Rotten Tomatoes, but 72% of audiences who have gotten a preview screening say they enjoyed the film. “Insidious: The Red Door” may not win many prestigious awards,...

It ends where it all began. Sony Pictures’s Insidious: The Red Door is out in theaters now. The horror franchise’s original cast is back in Insidious: The Red Door, directed by and starring Patrick Wilson. But Wilson covertly pulls triple duty in this sequel; the filmmaker collaborated with the band Ghost, singing on the end title track “Stay.”
The track is a cover of Shakespears Sister’s 1992 hit, which you can check out below.
For the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Wilson about his directorial debut, where Wilson recounted the entire story behind “Stay.” The director candidly broke down how he covertly pulled it together and the inspiration behind it.
“It happened behind most people’s backs. I’ll tell you that. Of course, if it’s a big hit, they’ll all take credit for it,” Wilson jokes. “No. I knew I wanted a song,...

Ghost recently released a covers EP called Phantomime, but they evidently have more covers in them. The Swedish metal band has unleashed a cover of Shakespears Sister’s 1992 single “Stay” featuring actor Patrick Wilson.
“Stay” opens with soft synths providing the basis behind echoing vocals. About halfway through the track, things pick up, as heavy guitar riffs crash in and the vocals take on a more powerful character.
So, how did “Stay” come together? As it turns out, actor, director, and Tony-nominated singer Wilson is a major Ghost fan. He saw the band live twice in 2022 and met up with frontman Tobias Forge while working on his directorial debut, Insidious: The Red Door.
Later, inspired by Ghost’s version of “Spillways” featuring Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, Wilson reached out to Forge, who had been working on a version of Shakespears Sister’s “Stay.” The two then decided to collaborate on the cover,...

There’s a moment in “Insidious: The Red Door” that encapsulates why the movie isn’t more insidious. Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson), the father from the first two “Insidious” films (this one is number five), has just dropped his son off for his freshman year at college. The son, Dalton, is once again played by Ty Simpkins, who was just a spooked kid in the earlier films; now he’s a spooked surly emo art student draped in hippie hair. Eight years ago, Dalton and his father were hypnotized so that they would lose all memory of the Further, the spirit zone Dalton got sucked into. The hypnosis worked; they’ve forgotten the living nightmares they saw. But now the visions are coming back.

Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth installment of the Insidious franchise and helmed by actor-turned-director Patrick Wilson, promises a dive into the haunted memories of the past, but the script by Scott Teems delivers little more than a stifling yawn. Alongside Wilson, the film stars Ty Simpkins, Rose Bryne and Sinclair Daniel.
The film begins where Insidious 2 concluded, with Josh Lambert (Wilson) and his suppressed memories of “The Further.” It then abruptly shifts to the solemn setting of the funeral of Josh’s mother, Lorraine (played by Barbara Hershey in previous films). While Dalton (Simpkins), Josh’s oldest son, reads from Scripture, the estranged Josh and Renai (Bryne) and other siblings wrestle with their loss. Also at the funeral, an encounter with Carl (played by Steve Coulter in previous films), the man responsible for erasing Josh’s memories, highlights the depths of Josh’s amnesia.

All four films in the Insidious franchise to this point have been rated PG-13, and the upcoming fifth film isn’t going to shake things up. The Motion Picture Association has announced that their ratings board has given Insidious: The Red Door – which is set to reach theatres on July 7th – a PG-13 rating for “violence, terror, frightening images, strong language and suggestive references“. And this rating comes along just in time for tickets to go on sale, as they’re now available on sites like Fandango.

The Insidious films have been a huge success since the first one was released almost a decade ago. Seeing as they were produced by the same people who brought us the Saw franchise, it’s understandable that they’ve been serving up solid scares for so long now. Having said that, it does seem like it’s almost time to wrap the series up and thankfully, it looks like the filmmakers feel the same way.
