"When kindness can cost you your life, it becomes like a miracle." Lionsgate has released another brand new 2024 release trailer for the movie White Bird, formerly known as White Bird: A Wonder Story. A sort of "spin-off" from the Wonder movie with Jacob Tremblay & Julia Roberts. Based on the graphic novel, it's a harrowing WWII survival story. The movie is about a boy named Julian who meets his French grandmother, who shares her story: how she, a young Jewish girl, was hidden by a family in a Nazi-occupied French village during World War II; how the boy she and her classmates once shunned became her savior and best friend. From Marc Forster (the director of Finding Neverland and Christopher Robin) White Bird, like Wonder before it, is an emotional story about how empathy for others can make a difference in the world. Starring Helen Mirren, Gillian Anderson, Bryce Gheisar, Ariella Glaser,...

Marc Forster has frequently demonstrated an ability to tastefully moderate the more manipulative or saccharine aspects of popular but somewhat blunt-edged source material, in bestseller screen translations like “The Kite Runner” and “A Man Called Otto.” That knack comes in handy once more with “White Bird,” a graceful adaptation of a YA graphic novel by R.J. Palacio. A “Wonder story” tangentially related to 2012’s “Wonder,” it may get some boost from the connection to that book’s successful 2017 film version with Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson.
This less-starry affair (with brightest luminary Helen Mirren relegated to a glorified cameo) is a period piece mixing the Holocaust and teen romance, likely to appeal to a somewhat narrower audience — albeit one that will broaden in home formats. Though one can quibble over some of the more simplistic story elements here, the director’s astute craftsmanship delivers a handsome result that hits the...

The next story in R.J. Palacio‘s Wonder saga is here, and if this trailer doesn’t move you, are you even human? Palacio’s Wonder inspired millions of readers to “choose kind” over cruelty. Lionsgate’s White Bird trailer reminds audiences to embrace kindness and learn to tolerate others regardless of heredity or station.
Marc Forster directs from Mark Bomback’s screenplay, which is based on the book by R.J. Palacio. In the White Bird trailer, kindness has the power to save lives. The story revolves around Wonder’s Julian Albans (Bryce Gheisar), Auggie’s antagonizing classmate who “left” Beecher Prep. In the film, Julian visits his Grandmère (Helen Mirren) from Paris and becomes transformed by her remarkable and unforgettable story of compassion and courage.

Children of the Corn is a new adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel, this time by Shudder and directed by Kurt Wimmer.
An adaptation shaped for the modern “sensibility” towards King’s novel, which raises philosophical questions about whether “any time in the past was better”.
I have never read such negative reviews about a film.
Movie Review
Could they have saved themselves the effort of making it? The answer is a resounding “yes”. It’s just another horror telefilm and which with this supposed regeneration of the tale – without covering any new ground – loses almost everything quitessential from the novel and destroys everything that the 1984 film had about it that was good.

Lots of films are based on true stories and real people, but Justin Kurzel’s “True History of the Kelly Gang” may be the only one to admit that even movies based on real life can’t be trusted. The first words we see on the screen in Kurzel’s dark epic, which had its world premiere last fall in Toronto, are “nothing you are about to see is true.” All of those words fade away except the last one, which then forms the first word of the movie’s title.
So the word truth, in this instance, will mean whatever we want it to mean. “True History of the Kelly Gang” is a true history, it’s a made-up story, it’s a vivid dramatization of one angle on an unknowable story and it’s a riff on the cultural mythmaking that John Ford explored when a newspaper editor...

“Nothing You Are About to See Is True.”
Those are the words that teasingly introduce True History of the Kelly Gang, the dazzling and defiantly rogue western from director Justin Kurzel that plays with facts to get at a deeper truth about Ned Kelly. This we know is true about 19th-century outlaw: The Irish-Catholic bank robber and cop killer who wore a metal helmet and a suit of armor in his final shootout with the law became known as Australia’s Robin Hood as he and his gang fought against...

Sometimes, old can be new again. It isn’t always what story being told, but how it’s being told. In the case of True History of the Kelly Gang, filmmaker Justin Kurzel is taking a unique and almost punk rock approach to the classic Ned Kelly legend. It’s a brash and undeniably different way of telling this story. For some, it will be strange and an immediate turn off. For others, it will be the first time that the Kelly tale has truly come alive. Hitting Digital and VOD on Friday, it at least has the distinction of being unlike anything else hitting screens. The film is a look at the legend of the Australian outlaw. Taking place in the English ruled badlands of colonial Australia, where the Irish endure must endure their violent subjugation, Ned Kelly (Orlando Schwerdt as a child and George MacKay as an adult) will come to oppose them.

Australia 1867. The audience is told that nothing they’re about to see is true as a bushranger named Ned Kelly narrates his story. But his account of his story isn’t necessarily the truthful one. Most are familiar with reading a celebrity’s autobiography for the first time and realizing how the subject’s own words often contradict other texts. Events in their lives are glossed over and changed to fit the image they want the world to see of themselves. Their life almost becoming Arthurian, a legend so mixed with fact and fiction that you begin to question if they were even real. Stories can easily be rewritten, and True History of the Kelly Gang plays with this mythicism with dramatic flair.

While he played a noble soldier in “1917,” George MacKay’s latest film “The True History of the Kelly Gang” casts him as a ruthless, murderous outlaw and gang leader with a taste for blood and revenge.
MacKay stars with Russell Crowe and Nicholas Hoult in this western-esque thriller from director Justin Kurzel that’s set during a violent period in Australian history.
“Many would call me the coldest blooded murderer ever, but others knowing the truth would call me a hero,” MacKay says with menace in the first trailer for the film.

Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang launched on 16 screens last Thursday, playing on limited sessions before the Australia Day premiere on Stan.
While the takings were a modest $32,000 and $93,000 including screenings at the Open Air Cinema Sydney (but not Mona in Hobart), Stan will reap the benefit of the publicity and mostly positive reviews.
Kurzel, screenwriter Shaun Grant (who adapted Peter Carey’s Man Booker Prize winning novel), producer Liz Watts and stars Essie Davis, Orlando Schwerdt and Sean Keenan attended the Sydney premiere.

"We're rebels... bandits... warriors..." Picturehouse Cinemas in the UK has revealed a new official UK trailer for the Australian indie drama True History of the Kelly Gang, which opens in Australia this month. This is the latest feature from Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel, of The Snowtown Murders and Macbeth previously, and it's a re-envisioning of the tall tale of an Australian bush-ranger named Ned Kelly and his gang as they flee from the authorities during the 1870s. If you're from Australia, you probably know the story, but if not - this flips the whole story on its head anyway. "Youth and tragedy collide in the Kelly Gang, and at the beating heart of this tale is the fractured and powerful love story between a mother and a son." Starring George MacKay (from 1917) as Ned Kelly, Essie Davis as his mother Ellen Kelly, plus Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult, Thomasin McKenzie, Sean Keenan,...

"Be who you were meant to be!" Memento International has debuted the first official trailer for Australian indie drama True History of the Kelly Gang, which just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival a few months ago. After a foray into Hollywood blockbusters with Assassin’s Creed, Justin Kurzel returned to Australia to tell another story of true crime, following his harrowing debut feature Snowtown. True History of the Kelly Gang tells the 19th-century tale of notorious outlaw, bushranger and folk hero Ned Kelly. Starring George MacKay and Orlando Schwerdt as Ned in different time periods, as well as Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult, Essie Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, and Charlie Hunnam, the first international trailer has landed ahead of a release next year.
C.J. Prince said in his review, “True History of the Kelly Gang opens with a title card stating that nothing in the film is actually true, a convenient choice for director Justin Kurzel as it lays out his film’s main point from the very start. The film is an adaptation from Peter Carey’s novel of the same name, and the title is meant to be a little ironic.

Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang is now officially a Stan original Australian production and will be released in cinemas and on the streamer this summer.
The launch date and the release window are yet to be revealed by Stan or the distributor Transmission Films – but it’s fair to assume Stan won’t have to abide by the usual 90-day hold back after the theatrical debut.
In a statement issued by Stan, Kurzel said: “I am thrilled in the boldness and daring by Stan to embrace our ambitious film. For Australians to see our take on Peter Carey’s extraordinary book in cinemas and on Stan over the summer is very exciting. I hope as many eyes as possible get the opportunity to see a film the makers are deeply proud of.”

True History of the Kelly Gang opens with a title card stating that nothing in the film is actually true, a convenient choice for director Justin Kurzel as it lays out his film’s main point from the very start. The film is an adaptation from Peter Carey’s novel of the same name, and the title is meant to be a little ironic. Carey wrote his novel from the perspective of Australian folk hero Ned Kelly writing his autobiography, but the story was full of embellishments and untruths. Kurzel and writer Shaun Grant stick to this idea, throwing in anachronistic choices throughout the late-1800s setting to evoke a punk rock mood, which aligns nicely with Kelly’s own rebellious nature.
Kurzel isn’t so radically minded when it comes to structure, as the film plays out in a linear chronology of events. Split into three parts, it falls...

Back in 1970, Tony Richardson’s “Ned Kelly” hit upon a neat idea: What if you got an honest-to-God rock star, Mick Jagger, to play Australia’s most notorious 19th-century folk hero? A neat idea is all it was, though, and the listless, unconfidently acted movie that resulted was duly forgotten. Nearly half a century later, however, Justin Kurzel’s thrilling new take on the legend gives Kelly some glam-rock swagger without any need for stunt casting. Lithe and volatile and recklessly stylized to the hilt, “True History of the Kelly Gang” has moves like Jagger, but a head still teeming with language and history. Adapted from Peter Carey’s Man Booker-winning 2000 novel, Kurzel’s roughhousing, ripely acted interpretation does full justice to the book’s rugged dirt-poetry vernacular and rich biographical particulars, while staging Kelly’s criminal rise and fall as a vision all its own: a wildly gyrating sensory assault of blood,...
