A Sinner of the Deep Sea
By Akihito Tomi
The ocean covers about 70 percent of the earth's surface—a whole world, yet unknown to humanity… And in its depths, a nation, thousands of meters beneath the waves. There, the mermaid Jo has been whiling away her days in peace. But that tranquility is shattered when her friend Ryuu is locked away for breaking the gravest of undersea laws: that humans must never know of the world below.
But why would Ryuu let the secret slip? And who did she tell? The curtain rises on Jo's adventure to save her friend—and on her love..!?

It’s been a long time coming, but anime veteran Masayuki Yoshihara finally helmed his first feature-length film with the 2023 release Komada — A Whisky Family.
Yoshihara is best known for his anime projects on television, with credits including Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East and Dragon Ball Z. In 2013, he helmed the well-received anime series The Eccentric Family for P.A. Works, based on the popular novel by Tomihiko Morimi. The Kyoto-set fantasy series ran for two seasons (25 episodes in total) and firmly established Yoshihara as a television director, the next step was to helm a fully-fledged anime movie.
The opportunity to direct a feature would come with Komada, which screened this week at the Tokyo International Film Festival and was also part of the competition selection at Annecy Festival, and the Anima’t section at Sitges Festival this year.

“A collection of four spooky tales for the modern era, all tied to a certain Kyoto curio shop. A basket wriggles, a masked man lingers in the shadows, and things are offered, lost, and forgotten. What mysteries lie hidden in the city’s winding streets? Tomihiko Morimi offers an eerie glimpse into the beguiling and mysterious darkness of the old capital.” (Yen Press)

“Fox Tales” collects four stories from Tomihiko Morimi centered around the lore and mythology behind the fox, commonly known as, the Kitsune in the Western interpretation of the folklore. What makes these four tales work so exceedingly well together, besides the engaging prose of Morimi, is how each tale becomes interwoven through subtle and mysterious ways fitting the Japanese characterization of the mischievous fox.

I consider Masaaki Yuasa one of the greatest anime directors of our time, one of the few who directs, continuously, titles that are addressed to adults and not children or teenagers, who seem to be the industry’s main target. Starting with “Mind Game” and “Kemonozume”, and continuing with “Ping Pong” and “Space Dandy,” I have cherished all of his works I have seen, and as it turns out, “Night Is Short, Walk on Girl” was no exception.
Night is Short, Walk on Girl will be screening at Japan Society on June 17
The story revolves around two people, the Girl With Black Hair and Senpai. The latter is in love with the former, and he has been trying to ask her out for some time, with his place and time of choice being a wedding they both attend, which is also, where the story starts. The Girl, however, whose resolution is to always move forward,...

No matter when Miyazaki decides to step down permanently (never probably), the spirit of Studio Ghibli is bound to live forever, with the impact the company and the Japanese master’s productions had and continue having being visible quite frequently in the whole spectrum of the anime world. “Penguin Highway” is a testament to the fact.

As fourth grade has just ended and summer vacations are upon him, he has to face a number of adventures.

Adapted from Tomihiko Morimi’s Nihon Science Fiction Taisho Award-winning novel from 2010, Penguin Highway takes us into a world barely unlike our own. Directed by Hiroyasu Ishida from Makoto Ueda’s script, the film centers upon a Japanese fourth grader on the cusp of self-proclaimed greatness. With just under four thousand days until adulthood and his first Nobel Prize (he calculated it himself), nothing can peel Aoyama’s (Kana Kita) precocious interest from new, mysterious experimentations besides his crush: the town’s pretty dental hygienist he refers to as “The Lady” (Yû Aoi). She takes his affection in stride by chastising his infatuation with her breasts (the blatant lecherous gaze of children in recent anime is disturbing) and always looks forward to his company on the other side of a chessboard.
It’s almost serendipitous then that Aoyama’s latest scientific quandary concerns her too. Penguins have suddenly arrived in their fields,...
