Numbers have begun rolling in for this second to last weekend of September 2023 and to be brutally honest: they are pretty terrible. Expend4bles is looking to come in severely under where even the most modest of tracking had it with what is looking like an $8-$10 million opening. In our Thursday predictions I saw that the fourthquel was tracking to a mid teens opening and thought it could get to around $17 million. It seems audiences decided to go the other way with this one and let it die a quiet death, the way many members of the Expendable team seem to have, as the film only features a handful of returning stars.
In his 5/10 review for the film, our Editor in Chief Chris Bumbray said that the film was neither as bad as most critics had written, yet still not very good. I would say I agree with that assessment,...

“Haunting in Venice” screenwriter Michael Green has adapted three of Agatha Christie’s works at this point. But for his latest venture, the folks at the Christie estate took pause when they discovered which novel he wanted to adapt.
“He [Green] first talked to me about doing something with ‘Hallowe’en Party’ quite a long time ago,” said James Prichard, chairman and CEO of the Christie estate, referring to the 1969 novel that was the basis of “Haunting in Venice.” Unlike the film, which follows detective Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) as he investigates the death of a young girl at a Venice palazzo, “Hallowe’en Party” was very different, in both plot and characters.
For Green, he knew it was a tough sell. “I remember the conversation because I could see the look in his [Prichard’s] eye where he’s desperate to be polite, but also doesn’t understand what I’m saying,...

The third film in Kenneth Branagh’s re-imagined Hercule Poirot series, A Haunting in Venice, earned $1.2M at Thursday Preview screenings. The spooktacular adaptation of Agatha Christie‘s Hallowe’en novel could perform similarly to other chapters of Branagh’s Poirot films, with a weekend gross of roughly $15M.
While the numbers barely move the needle compared to 2023’s other box office barn burners, it’s worth noting that A Haunting in Venice is Branagh’s best-reviewed Poirot film with a 77% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Poirot’s latest case might not pack the star power of 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express or 2022’s Death on the Nile. Still, it includes Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh and multi-talented funny gal Tina Fey. If A Haunting in Venice plays its tarot cards right, it could send The Nun II to the back of the pews after a 60%+ dip in attendance.

The whodunit is back.
At least that seems to be the case in recent years with the success of Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot movies—the third one, A Haunting in Venice, hits theaters this week—Rian Johnson’s Knives Out thrillers, and even TV shows like Only Murders in the Building. But according to someone who should know, the great-grandson of legendary murder mystery writer Agatha Christie, the classic detective story subgenre has never quite gone away.
“I would say that the movie industry came to the game late,” says James Prichard, a man who is not only Christie’s descendant but also the chairman and CEO of Agatha Christie Ltd., which manages the literary and media rights to his great-grandmother’s works. “We’ve never gone away, we’ve been making stuff all through the last 10, 20, 30 years. But we didn’t make a movie for a very long time.

Kenneth Branagh’s version of the famous detective Hercule Poirot is very likely to return once again after his third outing as the Belgian detective from the Agatha Christie novels, as executive producer James Prichard is more than open to making more films as long as Branagh and writer Michael Green are still interested.
According to Aceshowbiz, “If Ken wants to do more, and Michael wants to write more, we’ll certainly do another. There’s a lot of material still to go, so we’re not going to run out of inspiration,” Prichard told ‘Total Film’ magazine.
Kenneth Branagh for his part has been more than open to return as the iconic detective once again, as he’s made it clear before that there is an element of charm and intrigue to the character, which got him interested to play the role in the first place.

After six delays across two years, Disney is finally forging ahead with plans to premiere “Death on the Nile,” the upcoming murder mystery thriller from director Kenneth Branagh.
But before the star-studded whodunit lands on the big screen, the studio will have to navigate a potential PR nightmare surrounding Armie Hammer, who faced sexual abuse allegations after filming was complete. He’s (barely) featured in the latest trailer, but his involvement in the movie’s press tour, which would be de rigueur for any actor with a prominent role, remains unclear.
In the months following rape and abuse accusations, Hammer has been all but officially ousted from Hollywood. He has exited Jennifer Lopez’s “Shotgun Wedding,” the thriller “Billion Dollar Spy,” the Paramount Plus series “The Offer” and the Broadway play, “The Minutes.” He was also dropped by his talent agency, WME. Hammer has denied all allegations that have been...

The Revenant star Will Poulter and Bohemian Rhapsody’s Lucy Boynton are to lead the cast of Hugh Laurie’s three-part adaptation of Agatha Christie’s murder-mystery Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?.
Deadline revealed that The Night Manager and House star was behind the adaptation in April and the series is starting production this week.
Based on the 1934 Agatha Christie novel, Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? follows the local Vicar’s son, Bobby Jones (Poulter), and his whip-smart friend, socialite Lady Frances “Frankie” Derwent (Boynton) on their crime-solving adventure after they discover the crumpled body of a dying man who, with his last breath, gasps the cryptic question of the title. Armed only with a photograph of a beautiful young woman found in the dead man’s pocket, these amateur detectives pursue, and are pursued by, the answer to the mystery.

Lucy Boynton (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Will Poulter (“The Revenant”) are set to star in Hugh Laurie’s adaptation of “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?”, one of Agatha Christie’s earliest murder mystery novels.
Laurie (“House”) is set to direct and act in the three-part series for BritBox North America, in which he plays the creepy Dr. James Nicholson, a clinical director of a sanatorium.
Christie published “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?”, which follows Bobby (Poulter) and shrewd socialite Lady Frances (Boynton) as they untangle a murder mystery, in 1934. In classic Christie fashion, there are plenty of twists and turns until the perpetrator is finally unmasked.
“I’m so thrilled to be working with Hugh and Will, and on this story from one of my favourite authors,” said Boynton. “I can’t wait to get started.” She won’t have to wait long with production kicking off this week.
