Brett Goldstein is set to make a guest appearance in Shrinking season two, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The Ted Lasso breakout co-created the Apple TV+ show alongside Bill Lawrence and Jason Segel, who also stars in the Emmy-nominated series.
Details about Goldstein’s character are being kept locked away in the therapist’s desk at this time.
Shrinking follows Segel’s Jimmy, a grieving therapist who starts to break the rules of his career by telling his clients exactly what he thinks. “Jimmy has lost his wife and wants to try a new approach to his loss, but it is unclear how this will help others,” the logline reads.
Goldstein has remained behind the camera as one of the show’s co-creators and executive producers. With his upcoming guest role, he’ll return to acting on an Apple TV+ series, following his role in Ted Lasso.

Shrinking co-creator Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) is stepping in front of the camera in Season 2.
Sources tell Deadline there had been multiple attempts to have Goldstein appear in the Apple dramedy but things didn’t pan out. When the perfect role came along—which btw is currently top secret—he couldn’t say no. He is billed as a guest star in Season 2, which is currently in production.
Shrinking follows grieving therapist Jimmy (Jason Segel) who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives … including his own. In addition to Segel, the series stars Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Lukita Maxwell, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie and Ted McGinley.
Segel and Williams recently earned individual Emmy Award acting nominations for their portrayal of therapists in the series.

“I am astonished to be in this category, which is bananas,” Offerman said onstage. “Congrats to all of you. This is crazy.”
“Thanks to HBO for having the guts to participate in this storytelling tradition that is truly independent. Stories with guts, that when homophobic hate comes my way and says, ‘Why did you have to make it a gay story?’ We say, ‘Because you ask questions like that.’ It’s not a gay story. Harrison Ford surprised SAG-AFTRA members during a nomination committee Q&a this afternoon when he showed up to talk about his role on Apple TV+’s “Shrinking.”
Ford was keen to lavish praise on the cast of the comedy-drama television series, describing working with his co-stars as a uniquely different experience that rejuvenated his perspective on acting.
“There are people who improvise as though it was an exercise in egos. That never happens with this bunch. Work is really important to everybody that’s here,” said Ford.
“This mixture of comedy and pathos and really emotional stuff, it gives you a sense of responsibility for the things you’re communicating and how you’re communicating,” he continued. “I think that that shows up on screen, and it shows up in the work these people do every day and how they do it. The first season of Shrinking ends with a literal cliff-hanger. One of Jimmy’s (Jason Segel) patients takes his unconventional therapeutic advice to the extreme and pushes her abusive husband over the edge of a Los Angeles mountain, right as the credits roll. Segel and his co-creators Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein had the idea for what Lawrence calls the “pulling-out-the-rug moment” before they even sat down to write the pilot, so when they gathered with their cast for a THR Presents panel, powered by Vision Media, the explosively wacky ending was on everyone’s minds.
“I was so shocked and I was glad it wasn’t me,” joked Ted McGinley, who plays Derek on the Apple TV+ show, while Luke Tennie (Sean) quipped, “It made my wife very nervous.”

This story about the casting of “Shrinking” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Say you’re casting a thoughtful comedy about the world of psychotherapists, and you need a seasoned veteran to support the sharp young cast in a potentially scene-stealing mentor role. And then you land one of the biggest movie stars in the world, an icon who has been in two of the largest movie franchises in the last 50 years.
This was the reality for “Shrinking” casting directors Debby Romano and Brett Benner when the AppleTV+ comedy was being put together. It still seems surreal to them that they landed Harrison Ford for the pivotal supporting role of Paul, a senior member of the practice where Jason Segel and Jessica Williams’ characters work as therapists.

“Do you like your job?”
That’s how my interview with Jason Segel begins — him beating me to the punch, asking the first question. It perfectly sets the tone. Because like me, he likes his job a lot.
“I don’t like the parts of my job that require permission. That’s why I started writing. No one can tell you no, no one can say you can’t,” says Segel. “The best piece of advice I got was to try to remove as many of the systems of permission along the way as you can.”
Segel has worked hard to get to this point. Currently, he’s promoting Apple TV+’s “Shrinking,” a dark comedy he leads and co-created with Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein. There’s freedom in working on a project as a co-creator, but that wasn’t always the case.

For the first time this awards season, Jason Segel (“Shrinking”) has cracked into the Top 6 of Gold Derby’s Emmy odds for Best Comedy Actor. That means our Experts, Editors and Users collectively think he’ll receive a nomination alongside reigning two-time Emmy defender Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”), winter awards season champ Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”), former two-time Emmy winner Bill Hader (“Barry”), plus both Steve Martin and Martin Short from “Only Murders in the Building.”
Segel plays Jimmy Laird on the Apple TV Plus hit, a recently widowed therapist who tries to connect with his patients through slightly controversial means. He lives at home with his estranged teenage daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell), who is often looked after by their friendly neighbor Liz (Christa Miller). At work, Jimmy’s boss is Paul Rhoades (Harrison Ford), an aging man who struggles with Parkinson’s disease.

Luke Tennie is a good-natured guy, someone who’s quick with a compliment and loves to cook elaborate dinners for his spouse. “I’m one of the happiest dudes I’ve ever met,” the actor tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. So when it came time for Tennie to audition to play Sean on the Apple TV+ comedy “Shrinking” he had some decisions to make. The character is a combat veteran whose post-traumatic stress disorder and anger management issues have knocked him off course. But within that drama, Sean is also quite funny, particularly in his interactions with his new therapist, Jimmy (played by comic veteran Jason Segel).
“I was drawn to the dichotomy of what would it look like if I play a character with this much anger?” Tennie, who previously appeared on drama series like “Deadly Class” and “CSI: Vegas,” says. “I got obsessed and immediately called my homie,...

This article contains spoilers for the Shrinking season 1 finale.
Though an honest and unflinching story about grief, season 1 of Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking was also cheerful ray of sunshine.
That’s in keeping with the M.O. of its creators Jason Segel, Bill Lawrence, and Brett Goldstein. Segel is a beloved Muppet-enchanted movie star while Lawrence and Goldstein are fresh off of producing Ted Lasso, another Apple TV+ comedy so relentlessly optimistic that it makes Mr. Rogers look like Mr. Squidward. Shrinking is an important entrant into the increasingly packed space of “Good Vibes” television.
That’s why it’s particularly surprising that the very last scene of the Shrinking season 1 finale features a moment that could darken the tone considerably of the already-announced season 2. Allow us to explain.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “Closure,” the Season 1 finale of “Shrinking,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
Throughout “Shrinking,” Jimmy (Jason Segel) makes a handful of questionable decisions as a therapist. However, his session with Grace (Heidi Gardner) in the final episode seemingly encourages her to make a dire decision. While telling Jimmy she’s finally standing up to her verbally abusive boyfriend, Grace jokes that he’s lucky they’re not on a cliff because she’d push him off. Jimmy cheers her on, telling her, “That’s what I’m talking about! Off the cliff! Bash his brains! Eat them up!”
The episode ends, however, with her boyfriend threatening her on a hike and her pushing him off the cliff.
“One of the things that we did think was really, really important was to make sure that the show was honest. And Jimmy is behaving erratically and...

In Shrinking, Segel takes on the role of Jimmy Laird, a therapist — or “psychological vigilante,” as Jimmy says — who lost his way after the death of his wife. He became emotionally estranged from his daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell), and cut off his closest friends. At work, Jimmy can’t seem to find the right words to help his patients. That is, until he suddenly snaps and tells people exactly what he thinks. To Jimmy’s surprise, his unorthodox (and maybe unethical) method helps a lot of people,...

Jason Segel’s character in Apple TV+ ‘s new dramedy, Shrinking, breaks every therapist rule within the first episode. But apparently, it’s Ok!, because he’s funny and it seems to work out every time.
The series, which began streaming today and which hails from Segel as well as Ted Lasso’s Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, covers similar themes as the soccer comedy. But Shrinking views grief and other issues through the lens of a therapist who can’t help himself.

“Shrinking” is the bastard love child of “Ted Lasso” and “Scrubs.” The funny, self-aware, wonderfully cast workplace comedy centers on a small Pasadena psychological practice. From there, it moves out in spokes into the family lives, mental obsessions and dysfunction of its three main shrinks: Jason Segel, Jessica Williams and, yes, Harrison Ford.
Laughter, life lessons, hugs, jabs and serial ridiculous situations cram this ten-part comedy. “Shrinking” begins with an absurd meet-awkward between audience and therapist. We encounter central mensch-meshuggah Jimmy (Jason Segel at his most neurotic teddy bearish) in his own backyard.
The mind-doctor has reached rock bottom. He’s snorting a mix of psychiatric drugs while hanging by his backyard pool at 3 a.m., blaring music with two young sex workers mermaid-ing in the chlorinated water nearby. He’s momentarily blissed, high – and a really crappy clueless neighbor in his pricy South Pasadena neighborhood.

Shrinking has been created by Brett Goldstein, Bill Lawrence and Jason Segel, and starring Segel himself, Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams.
Shrinking is a sentimental comedy (very sentimental) starring Harrison Ford and Jason Segel. In the story Jimmy (Segel) is a therapist that has just lost his wife and… his will to live. This will not last a long time because he will have to change everything in order to restore his faith in life, illusions and those things like looking at a rainbow with honesty and no sarcasm.
This is a polite comedy (and second chance) that is very sentimental that has these two great actors as main attraction.
If you don´t like sensitive (third) stories, please avoid it, but if you want to take a look at the more sensitive part of your heart, give this movie a chance because it is full of charming, entertaining and lovable characters.

But behind the scenes, Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence, a co-creator on Ted Lasso, are involved in the new series. Plus, there’s another connection between Ted Lasso and Shrinking — find out what.
