Leylah Fernandez is on a great winning streak, extending it to seven matches at the 2023 Jiangxi Open , a Wta 250 tournament in Nanchang.
After her final run at the 2021 US Open, many expected the young Canadian to shoot to the stars, yet, that did not really happen. While playing solid tennis, she missed big results, and those now seem to be coming.
Fernandez won the 2023 Hong Kong Open , and she returned to the Top 50 as a result . Immediately after her triumph, the 21-year-old wasted no time as she moved to Nanchang for the 2023 Jiangxi Open.
After winning first-round match against Hanyu Guo, the Canadian had to wait for her second-round match, as that was postponed, and because of that, she'll have to play two matches on Friday.
In her second-round match, she took on another native player, Xiaodi You, who defeated Anna Blinkova in the opening round. The Chinese player was an underdog in the match,...

The 2023 Hong Kong Open will run from October 9th to 15th, offering an opportunity for the Wta 's unheralded players to win a title as the season draw s to a close.
The draw for this year's tournament has been released, which features a plethora of intriguing matches right from the get-go, and perhaps none bigger than a meeting between a former Grand Slam champion and a Grand Slam finalist. On that note, let us take an in-depth look at this year's draw.
In the top half of the draw, top seed Victoria Azarenka will start her campaign against Leylah Fernandez - the marquee match of the first round in Hong Kong. The 2023 US Open will be held from August 28 to September 10th, and with the last major of the season, multiple storylines are unfolding after the draw reveal.
Iga Swiatek enters the 2023 US Open as a defending champion but also as the world number 1, the same as her colleague from the Atp Tour, Carlos Alcaraz. But the young Pole may face extra pressure at the New York major , defending not just her title but also the world no. 1 spot.
But as always, the 22-year-old will want to focus on one match at a time, and the first one will see the top seed play against Rebecca Peterson . On the other side of the draw will be her main rival for the title and the world no. 1 spot , Aryna Sabalenka .

Russian and Belarusian players won't be able to take part in next week's Prague Open , as confirmed by the organizers of the event on Friday.
The Wta 250 event has been going on for over a decade now and mostly saw native Czech players dominate it. It was played on clay for many years but shifted to hard courts recently, which allowed some players to score deep runs.
Anastasia Potapova, for example, played in the final last year, but the Russian won't be able to take part this year as the country banned all players from Russia and Belarus from attending. AP news is reporting that the event organizers confirmed the news on Friday after reports of the country not allowing a Russian player to enter it.
There weren't any reports as to which player wasn't allowed entry, but in total, four players will be barred from playing at the event.

The 2023 Prague Open promises to once again showcase the talent of one of the most successful countries in the history of the Wta Tour.
The Czech Republic has been one of the most successful countries in the Billie Jean King Cup over the years, winning 11 trophies and trailing only the United States with 18. In the past 12 years, the country won the competition six times, and it's not a surprise that it has many talented players that are featured on the entry list for the 2023 Prague Open.
Last year, Anett Kontaveit was the top seed in the tournament in Prague, however, the Estonian won't make an appearance in 2023 as she ended her career recently . Funnily, it was Marie Bouzkova who beat her in the last match. The Czech player is also the 2022 Prague Open champion, and she will defend her title in 2023.

The 2023 Poland Open in Warsaw will once again bring a lot of excitement to the Polish capital, especially because of one name on the entry list .
Running from July 24th to 30th, the Wta 250 tournament in Warsaw seems to be slowly but surely establishing its place in the calendar. The reason for that is quite simple, currently the biggest star on the Wta Tour, Iga Swiatek , comes from Poland.
Last year the Polish superstar competed at the event in Warsaw, but she lost to Caroline Garcia , who later became the champion of the event. While the defending champion won't appear at the event in 2023, the Polish No. 1 leads the entry list.
For Swiatek, playing at home is extraordinary , and that's why she makes sure to visit the tournament every time she can. She will probably make the Polish fans even happier if she managed to win the title.

London, July 7 (Ians) Two-time champion Petra Kvitova made her way into the third round of Wimbledon for the ninth time with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of world No.69 Aliaksandra Sasnovich in 74 minutes, here on Friday.
No.9 seed Kvitova dominated from the start on No.2 court, taking just 39 minutes to secure the first set in the Wimbledon sunshine.
Following an exchange of breaks at the start of the second, the Czech broke again for 4-2 to stamp her authority on the match.
The 33-year old Kvitova came into Wimbledon fresh from a title win in Berlin, where she beat Donna Vekic in the final. Even so, since lifting the Venus Rosewater dish in 2011 and 2014 Kvitova has only once made it beyond the third round at Wimbledon.
She now has a chance to improve that record when she faces either qualifier Natalija Stevanovic or lucky loser Tamara Korpatsch.

Coco Gauff was doubles number one before, while Jessica Pegula was not but she could be if they win the 2023 Wimbledon trophy.
Both Gauff and Pegula had dreamed about being Wta number one and while neither achieved it in singles, Gauff did in doubles . Pegula didn't as of yet but she could if she and Gauff win the Wimbledon trophy.
It's in striking distance, especially after Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova withdrew from the event. It was a good start for them as they won their opening match though it wasn't really a perfect match.
They rarely play a perfect match, singles or doubles, but in the end, winning ultimately matters. It was good to see them back together on the court as the last time we saw them share a court was when they played recently.

Iga Swiatek keeps cruising at the 2023 Italian Open in Rome after she defeated Donna Vekic in the fourth round.
The World No. 1 is a favourite at almost every event that she enters, but especially those played on the red dirt. The Wta 1000 tournament in Rome is one of those, so it's not a surprise that Swiatek is a two-time defending champion, having won the event in 2021 and 2022.

Melbourne, Jan 18 (Ians) World No 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland has soared into the third round of the Australian Open, overcoming a pair of late-set stumbles here at Rod Laver Arena to dismiss Colombian Camila Osorio.
Swiatek closed out a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Osorio in 84 minutes to win her 12th straight second-round match at a major. The Pole star hasn’t lost before the third round of a major since the 2019 US Open.
Swiatek has now won 53 of her first 65 main-draw Grand Slam singles matches. In the Open Era, only six players had more such wins after their first 65 matches in majors: Margaret Court (61), Monica Seles (60), Chris Evert (57), Martina Hingis (56), Billie Jean King (56) and Tracy Austin (54).
Osorio’s abilities to hyperextend rallies and change the direction of the ball down the line at a moment’s notice allowed her to hang with the World No.1 in a number of close games.

New York, Sep 1 (Ians) World No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland defeated former champion Sloane Stephens in straight sets at the US Open in just 1 hour, 13 minutes here Thursday.
Swiatek, who has earlier this year was on a dominant 37-match win streak, won 6-3, 6-2.
The free-swinging Swiatek, 21, a two-time Grand Slam champion, is increasingly looking like she may be ready to scale those heights again. But her current form is still far from the flawless play she exhibited in the spring and early summer.
Still, Swiatek-surprisingly playing for the first time on Arthur Ashe Stadium-easily passed the first significant hurdle in her campaign to add a US Open title to her resume. Stephens, now 29 and ranked No. 51, came in as a very dangerous floater. She was also unseeded, ranked just No. 83 when she won the US Open in 2017.

Cincinnati, Aug 16 (Ians) Amanda Anisimova passed her difficult opening-round test at the Western & Southern Open with flying colours, defeating world number 10 Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 6-4 on Monday.
Ekaterina Alexandrova mounted a pair of comebacks to defeat No.13 seed Leylah Fernandez, 6-4, 7-5 in the first round.
Alexandrova will face either Naomi Osaka or Zhang Shuai in the second round.
Playing her first tournament since Berlin, Alexandrova rallied from 3-0 down in the first set and 5-1 down in the second set to upend Fernandez and level their head-to-head 1-1. Fernandez served for the second set twice, but Alexandrova wiped out two set points to prolonge the set, ultimately winning the last six games of the match.
Russia’s Kasatkina, who has beaten two of the world’s top-seven players in the past couple of weeks, had her serve broken six times by America’s Anisimova, thanks in large part to five double faults.

Cincinnati (US), Aug 14 (Ians) Serena Williams, who is playing her second-to-last tournament of her career, will face reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu in her first round match at Western & Southern Open, here on Monday.
The 40-year old Williams, who is more than two decades older than her 19-year-old opponent, was the top-ranked player in the world when Raducanu was born in November of 2002.
Raducanu, at a career-high No 10 among Wta Tour players, draws the unseeded Williams, who has played only three matches in the past 13 months. It’s their first meeting and, quite possibly, their last.
“To see her around in this US swing is really inspiring. She keeps playing because she obviously loves the game. And I think that longevity of a career is something that a lot of the players, and me especially, aspire to achieve as well,” Raducanu said about Williams in Toronto.
