“Ok, I can die now.”
So said a woman seated behind The Hollywood Reporter inside Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, host of the inaugural The Netflix Slam. She had just snapped a selfie that captured superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz warming up on center court over her shoulder. Sure, it was a dramatic statement but it wasn’t obscene for such an occasion. There’s no shortage of gasp-worthy moments in Sin City, and there’s no doubt many of the 9,489 seated guests could relate to the sentiment.
The Sunday afternoon showdown, the latest in Netflix’s push for live streaming events, pitted two superstar Spaniards in an exhibition match that could be one of the final few times they meet across a net. The fact that it happened was a bit of a coup, too, as it was rescheduled last year due to Nadal...

Novak Djokovic is one of the most famous and successful tennis players in the world. The Serbian star began his professional career in 2003 and he’s been impressive to watch ever since. Today he holds the all-time record of men’s major singles titles.
But there comes a point in every Goat’s career when they’re asked about retiring especially after some of the other greats they competed against for so long have already called it a career. For Djokovic, those athletes are Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. In 2022, Federer announced his retirement from the sport after more than two decades. And in 2023, Nadal said that 2024 would be his final season.
Now, Djokovic is being asked about his future. Here’s what he had to say.

Alex de Minaur came close to being a Top 10 player on the Atp Tour in the past, but now it's finally going to happen on Monday, January 8.
Alex de Minaur has been a steady performer for much of his career. The keyword is steady because he's been pretty solid for a long time, but it took him a long time to really get to the Top 10.
Part of that was some players overtaking him in the pecking order, but mostly, it was just him proving at a steady pace. He didn't have a meteoric rise, but he slowly got better over time, and that consistency and hard work paid off this week at the 2024 United Cup in his native Australia.
He delivered a stunning performance to beat Alexander Zverev in the United Cup, and that win will make him a Top 10 player in January.

The USA has named a very strong lineup to face Ukraine at the 2024 Davis Cup Qualifiers, scheduled to take place at the start of February.
The draw for the oldest team competition in tennis was released by the International Tennis Federation (Itf) in late November last year, where the United States was seeded at No. 7.
They learned they would face Ukraine, who defeated Colombia in Kaspi, Georgia, in the World Group I tie last September. They will be keen to address their bad showing at last year's tournament, where they were eliminated in the Davis Cup Finals group stage.
Team captain Bob Bryan will be looking for a strong response and has named a capable team to beat Ukraine. The tie is scheduled for February 1st and 2nd in Vilnius, Lithuania. Bryan has rung the changes for his country.

Casper Ruud continues to play excellent tennis at the start of 2024 as he keeps Norway alive in the 2024 United Cup quarterfinals with a win over Adrian Mannarino.
The first match of this United Cup tie saw Caroline Garcia give France the first point. That put Ruud in a tricky spot because losing the match would basically ensure that Norway was out.
He needed to win the match, and he stepped up right on time. The Norwegian has generally looked really solid at the start of the year, beating Taylor Fritz in Abu Dhab i easily.
It's a stark contrast to how badly he started last year, and having a proper off-season this year might have something to do with it. Mannarino is not an easy player to beat, but Ruud made it look very easy early in this match, taking a 4-0 lead early.

Taylor Fritz has been part of the Top 10 on the Atp Tour for a while, but the American is set to drop out of it after being eliminated from the 2024 United Cup.
The American has been around the top for a while now but really solidified his level in 2023. He spent the entire year in the Top 10, becoming world number 5 at one point but finishing at number 10.
After some bad performances at the World Tennis League in Dubai, Fritz didn't look too great in Australia either. He was part of the competition-winning team last year, but this year, the USA Team failed to really play on the same level and are out of the competition before even making the knock-out stages.
They won't defend their trophy, and losing points will cost Fritz his Top-10 ranking. For the first time in over a year, the American is set to drop out...

Tennis players are known to experience a range of emotions on a match court, and in order to play better, they need to release this built-up tension and emotion.
Some of the players, like World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, find fuel just by breaking their racket. Others like Andrey Rublev take it to the extreme levels of self-destructing by harming a body part. For Wta star Jessica Pegula, venting appears to be her way of coping with frustrations.
During a recent singles match at the United Cup, Pegula was extremely frustrated with her return game while playing Great Britain's Katie Boulter. The World No. 5 had never played Boulter before, but that didn't matter as she romped to take the first set 7-5.
Pegula then took a commanding 3-0 lead in the second set and looked to be cruising. But Boulter showed why she was the top-ranked British woman and turned the match on its head,...

Team USA overcomes Team Great Britain thanks a crucial win in the doubles after Katie Boulter sensationally kept her country alive with a win over Jessica Pegula.
We had a really brilliant matchup today at the United Cup when Team USA took on Team Great Britain. It wasn't expected to be a close match because many expected the Americans to win both singles and secure the tie, but that didn't happen.
Taylor Fritz did what he needed to do by beating Cameron Norrie in two sets. It was a pretty close match, but after the American secured the opening set, things got a bit easier. The final score ended up being 7-6(5) 6-4, with Team USA being up 1-0.
Many expected Jessica Pegula to follow up on that, but it didn't quite happen, even though she had a pretty good start. The match was really competitive and close, with the...

January last year not only brought us a lot of tennis in Australia but also brought us the first season of Break Point, the Netflix tennis docu-series, which will air its second season in the coming weeks.
It was certainly an interesting watch for those who don't follow tennis as much, but as many pointed out, the first season of Break Point didn't show much of what die-hard tennis fans didn't know.
Sure, we saw how it looked from the inside, but it wasn't that revelatory. Despite all that, the series proved a success which is why it will be returning for a second season.
The first glimpse of the new season was posted by Netflix on social media, and it received some interesting responses. Fans were excited to see some newcomers such as Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune, who are the future of tennis.

2024 will be a special tennis season because the Olympics are part of it, and it's affecting the schedule a lot according to Taylor Fritz.
Besides the obvious implications of extending the season by a week or two, the competition also forces players to do some things that they wouldn't usually do. The rules are clear, and you can't just waltz into the Olympic Games; there are some things you need to have on your resume to be able to play.
Besides the ranking, players also need to have played for their country in the team competitions, which is a bit annoying for Fritz because he will have to play in the Davis Cup after the Australian Open when he would have preferred to have that week off.

Daniil Medvedev says he is feeling as motivated as ever, but he finds motivation in a different way than he did in the past.

Grigor Dimitrov recorded his first singles match at the 2023 World Tennis League, when he bested Taylor Fritz.
When the two Atp players met in the men's singles match in the tie between The Falcons and The Kites, the American stepped on the court with a minor advantage, as his team won all the previous three matches.
At the tournament, where there are five matches played in a team format, each games won counts for one point, and therefore every game played counts towards the end result.
In their first singles matches at the tournament, both lost, since Dimitrov was outplayed by Andrey Rublev, while Casper Ruud proved to be better than Fritz on Day 1 of the tournament.
That meant that one of them would win their first match, and initially they both held their service games comfortably, but Dimitrov got the first break in the fourth break to establish the lead in the match.

After three doubles and one singles match, the score was pretty even as the Kites led the Eagles only by one point. It meant that Mirra Andreeva could win it for the Eagles if she bested Aryna Sabalenka, which would be a massive comeback as they trailed 12-7 after two matches.

Iga Swiatek had a chance to win the tie for her team at the 2023 World Tennis League against Elena Rybakina, but ultimately she came up short.
Even though it looked like the Falcons had it in the bag after the first three matches with a 19-12 lead, Casper Ruud annulled it with a superb performance against Taylor Fritz 6-1.
Winning three out of 5 ultimately wasn't enough for the Falcons due to the unique format. The exhibition tournament features a unique format where players are paired up in four teams of four, with each tie between teams consisting of 5 matches.
Each match is basically one set, and three of the five matches are doubles, with the remaining two matches being singles. Each game won in each match counts as one point, which matters most.
At the end of each tie, the winning team is the one that has the most points.

Casper Ruud took on Taylor Fritz at the World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi and played an amazing set, giving his team a fighting chance.
Before this match, Ruud's team was behind 19-12, which meant that he needed to deliver a stellar performance to give his team a fighting chance to win the overall tie. It's because of the unique format explained below.

Kei Nishikori has learned to "accept" his injury situation as he plots another comeback from injury next season.
Nishikori, who turns 34 in under two weeks, has announced that he will miss the 2024 Australian Open, which is set for a historic Sunday start next season. The former US Open finalist is still troubled by his knee injury at the Atp 250 event in Atlanta last July.
Back then, Nishikori was still in the early stages of his comeback from a truly horrifying hip procedure in February 2022 in which some of his bones were trimmed.
Nishikori revealed in an interview at the time that it was the most feasible surgery that prevented him from undergoing hip resurfacing surgery like the one Andy Murray did to extend his playing career.
After healing, he sprained his ankle, which delayed his return in 2023 until the summer, when he played on the Atp Challenger Tour. Nishikori won...

Taylor Fritz has explained his comments about the Atp Tour having separate events that would split the top 100 and lower-ranked players.
Fritz recently stated that the Atp Tour should have a main tour consisting of the four Grand Slams and other high-profile events, such as Atp Masters 1000 competitions.
He argued that such a setup would help player scheduling. The 26-year-old appeared to argue that these competitions would gain more of a following from a global audience compared to the lower-ranked events.
Recently, the American player was quoted saying he favored an elite-level tennis competition and a second-tier tour for Atp 250 and 500-level tournaments.
However, Fritz took to his personal X account in response to the original quotes. In his explanation post, the 26-year-old added further context, saying he was not favoring a top 100-120 player event and a lower-ranked tour.

Let’s take a look at the racket specs of Jannik Sinner, and just what is demanded of one of the heaviest hitters on the Atp Tour.
Following the example of Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner endorses the current Head Speed Auxetic. And although this is not his actual racket underneath, Sinner actually does use a version of the Head Speed – based on the Head Speed Graphene Touch from 2015.
Albeit, with a few custom adjustments. With a static weight of 325 grams and a relatively high balance of 33.3cm, Sinner’s rackets appear to be fairly simply customised from the stock Speed MP specs, bringing up the swingweight to a more challenging and professional-friendly 340 kg/cm2 .
The lead weight added to the sides of Sinner’s racket head will, in addition to the significant increase in swingweight, add some much-needed stability to the frame – something the old Graphene Touch Speed rackets lack over the newer,...

Kei Nishikori won't play in the 2024 Australian Open as he reckons he won't be fit ahead of schedule and will target a February or March return.
It is tough to pick another player who has juggled an injury crisis quite like Nishikori in the past few years. Since the start of the 2020 season, Nishikori has played just 62 matches across all competitions, and it appears he hasn't recovered from his latest injury to play next month's Australian Open.

Taylor Fritz has been quite open about his distaste for the tennis balls used around the Atp Tour this year, and he voiced his displeasure once again.
Many players have complained about the tennis balls used this year. Many players find the balls quite heavy after a bit of play, causing problems for many. A lot of them have to hit the balls harder to generate the same power due to the heaviness, and it seems to be injuring players.
Wrist injuries have exploded recently, along with elbow and shoulder injuries, and quite a few players are convinced the balls are at fault. It's not impossible at all because it does make sense.
More wear and tear and more injuries are pretty simple concepts. Fritz also doesn't like the frequent changes, as he dealt with four different balls in four different weeks during the season.
It's just an entire mess...

Taylor Fritz is an ambitious player, which explains why he has been a Top 10 mainstay for a while now.
Ahead of the 2024 season, the 26-year-old highlighted what his overall goal should be even while playing at an "average" level. In an interview on this week’s episode of The Ao Show podcast, Fritz stated what would constitute a successful year even without playing his best tennis.
The Atp's Top 10 is traditionally considered the upper echelon of men's tennis. This is usually the yardstick, separating the elite from the rest of the pack. Fritz broke that barrier for the first time in October 2022 and became a mainstay at the beginning of the following month.
The 2022 season is considered the American's career-best year on tour. He won three titles, including his first-ever Master's on home turf in Indian Wells when he ended Rafael Nadal's 21-match winning streak at the start of the 2022 season.

Less than a month until the new tennis season starts afresh, Taylor Fritz is already "very excited" and "fired up" to represent his country in team competitions again.
The USA won the inaugural United Cup last season, with Fritz playing a significant part in that title run. The 26-year-old secured the match-clinching singles win over Italy's Matteo Berrettini. Playing team competitions is more than just another tennis match.
For Fritz, the camaraderie and positive vibes of being in a team environment are things that you don't particularly get to experience as a singles-playing Atp player. And when he is on the court, he always strives to play his very best tennis in team events.

Tennis is at an interesting stage because we hear more and more talk about reforming the sport, which Taylor Fritz would favor.
Tennis functions pretty well overall, but things could still be better. Some argue that reforming it in a specific way would be more beneficial and create interest, which is the point of any sport.
The more interest there is, the better it is for everybody involved. One interesting idea that's been floated was reforming the top flight of the sport and making it more exclusive.
Some have even suggested a 14-tournament season reserved for only the best of the best, akin to the Formula One season. It's nowhere near happening, according to Tennis Australia boss Craig Tiley, who is part of this discussion, and that's a good thing.
Such a move would be very tough to implement, and Tiley isn't one for rushing things, as he revealed in a talk with The Age.

Rafael Nadal will soon return to the Atp Tour, and his colleague, Taylor Fritz talked about his comeback.
Only recently, the experienced Spaniard announced that he would be coming back at the 2024 Brisbane International. Since he hasn't played for almost 365 days, that means that he will be unseeded at any tournament that he enters early in the season.
And that means only one thing. Anyone in the draw, no matter if seeded first as Nadal's biggest rival Novak Djokovic, or ranked low, can face the 22-time Grand Slam champion in the first round.
That means, that potentially, we could see a first-round match at the 2024 Australian Open between the 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal and 24-time major winner Novak Djokovic.
One of the players that can possibly stand on the other side of the net is also Taylor Fritz, who would probably want to avoid being the one who would face the Spaniard.

This year's Roland Garros saw plenty of players fall out with the Parisian crowd, but none had it worse than Taylor Fritz.
Taylor Fritz was playing against a native French player, Arthur Rinderknech, at Roland Garros, and he was not facing only the player but also the crowd. The crowd heavily backed their compatriot, which wasn't a problem, but Fritz grew quite tired of it over time.
The booing was present for much of the match but exploded in intensity when Fritz finished off the match and silenced the crowd. The crowd was so tilted that they kept booing for several minutes as Marion Bartoli tried to interview Fritz post-match, which were scenes we hadn't seen before.
It became this huge talking point, as the Tournament Director also called it too much. He was also booed in the next match, but that was a losing effort, so he didn't have to endure for too long.

Ben Shelton was a breath of fresh air in his first full season on the Atp Tour, and he was pumped right from the first ball.
Shelton's rise was sporadic, but it had plenty of learning lessons, which Andy Roddick so perfectly summed up when assessing his 2023 season. Shelton was ranked as low as 96th when he rubberstamped his passport for the first time in his life to play tennis tournaments outside the USA.
With his father as his right-hand man, the season didn't begin on a high note, with two defeats in his first three matches. But a compelling Australian Open in which he reached the quarterfinals was the grandest and most appropriate way possible to announce his name.
As far as introductions go, it is tough to dispute Shelton was the Atp Newcomer of the Year in 2023. Here's why:
Year-End Ranking: 17th

Novak Djokovic is now firmly in control of the Olympics race after winning the final two tournaments of the Atp season.

Having clinched a record-extending eighth-year-end No. 1 ranking, he extended his dominance over the rest of the field in the Race to Paris. Djokovic compiled 6,500 points from mid-June when the Olympics race started to accrue ranking points.
Carlos Alcaraz is in second place. Having led the race for most of the second half of the season, the Spaniard was overtaken by the in-form Serbian. Alcaraz finds himself playing catchup, trailing Djokovic by 1,820 points.

Ben Shelton generated a lot of buzz this year, and he's among those Andy Roddick could see winning a Grand Slam title.
Roddick is uniquely qualified to talk about this because he's the last American who actually won a Grand Slam trophy for his team. It happened a very long time ago, in 2003, so the drought has been real. The United States just had a Grand Slam champion in Coco Gauff, and now they want to see a man do it.
There are plenty of candidates, such as Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton, and others, but for Roddick, who spoke to the Tennis Channel, Shelton seems to have that upside, reminding him of Nick Kyrgios.
He's a player who's going to be very dominant on his serve, which should give him a pretty good chance at several events. He made the semi-final at the US Open, pushing Djokovic pretty well.

Emma Raducanu was supposed to officially make her tennis comeback on Chinese soil at the Macau exhibition but withdrew from the tournament because she wasn't yet in playing condition.
Her comeback will likely happen about a month later at the Australian Open, which means that the event will run without the British player, but still, the field will be very competitive.

Stefanos Tsitsipas won't be playing any more matches at the 2023 Atp Finals as he was forced to withdraw from the tournament.
When the Greek player retired only after 15 minutes against Holger Rune, it seemed to be quite obvious that he may not be able to continue at the event, but that is now official as Tsitsipas withdrew from the tournament.
After the match, he talked about his injury, which is a big injury, and revealed why he has decided to compete despite being unsure whether he would be able to finish the match. According to the Greek, if he would get an easy win, he may have been able to finish the match.
"Well, look, the tour is very demanding. We get to play a lot of matches during the year at a very high level and intensity. There's not a single match during the season that is easy, considered easy.

Quite an interesting situation happened at the 2023 Atp Finals today when alternates Hubert Hurkacz and Taylor Fritz stepped in for an exhibition match to fill the gap.
This year's Atp Finals alternates are Taylor Fritz and Hubert Hurkacz. Neither really expected to play but the first alternate Hurkacz might actually get a chance to do so after Stefanos Tsitsipas' 2023 Atp Finals campaign seems to be over.
The Greek player was supposed to play Holger Rune at 14:30 local time today, and while the match started, it didn't last long. Down 2-1 in the opening set, Tsitsipas called the trainer, and after a brief consultation, the Greek player opted to retire.
He's dealt with an elbow issue ahead of the event, canceling multiple practices. In that sense, the retirement is not a surprise, as many expected it to come against Jannik Sinner in the previous match.
He finished that one but couldn't really play this one,...

Carlos Alcaraz wants to see the Atp do something about the tennis balls because more players will get injured if they don't.
Quite a few players have complained about the tennis balls in use this year and, more importantly, the non-stop changes. While players eventually might get used to the heavier balls in use this year, they won't get used to it if events keep changing it all the time.
Some players like Taylor Fritz experienced four different tennis balls in four consecutive events, which is a nightmare both for playing but also for the amount of stress the body feels during play. Alcaraz hasn't had any problems with it, but he'd like to see the Atp do something about it, as he said during the 2023 Atp Finals.
Well, they should do something about it 'cause it's unbelievable that if we play three or four tournaments in a row, we...

There is another twist in Emma Raducanu's comeback plans and it is bad news for those patiently waiting for her much-anticipated return to tennis.
Raducanu, who hasn't played a competitive match since mid-April, was gearing up for her first match of preseason at the Macau exhibition in her mother's homeland in China at the start of December.
But she has now suffered a fresh setback in her preparations and made the decision to withdraw from the event on the day she was celebrating her 21st birthday. This new development is likely to affect Raducanu's return in 2024.
As reported by the Daily Mail UK, the British tennis star was requested by the tournament organizers to commit to the schedule, but there were no guarantees she would play at the tournament which is set to begin on December 2.

The Atp Race to Turin came down to the final weeks of the season and sadly for Taylor Fritz, he was among a handful of players who missed out right at the last.
Fritz finished 10th in the race, some 360 points short of the cut-off entry. An untimely abdominal injury he picked up at the Paris Masters during his first-round win over Sebastian Baez proved much more serious despite his decision to play on in the match.
The lanky American underwent scans that ultimately forced him to pull out from his next match. It was a massive disappointment for Fritz who ended up pulling from his subsequent tournament in Sofia and calling time on his 2023 season.
With his qualification chances going up in smoke, Tennis TV social media operators rubbed salt to injury, with an artwork depicting all the eight qualified players for this year's Atp Finals, having all checked...

From December 21st to 24th, the 2023 World Tennis League will be played in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and the teams for the event were drawn.
In recent years, off-season exhibition tournaments became popular, because of multiple reasons. One of them is the obvious, that it gives players a chance to go head-to-head before the season starts.
With these exhibitions being often held in countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, which are known for paying athletes well, another reason is the fact that players can earn some extra money by participating in such exhibitions.
And another factor is fun that they have at such tournaments, and one of them is certainly the World Tennis League, which is played in a team format, and these teams, the teams were seemingly not drawn randomly.
Looking at the draw, it's impossible to think that the draw was made randomly,...

On Tuesday, the governing body of men's tennis, Atp, announced an increased bonus pool distribution to unparalleled levels to the benefit of players and tournaments.
Last year, the Atp signed on a historic breakthrough era of profit sharing as part of its strategic plan for widespread reform in player compensation and incentives termed the OneVision plan which will now take effect this year and reward the bonuses to players and tournaments.
The total bonus pool stands at $33.5 million for the 2023 season. It is worth noting that the Atp committed $20 million to reward the Top 30 players with the highest number of cumulative points at the Masters 1000 level and the year-end championships.
From the total bonus pool, $1.3 million has been distributed to the top five players with the most points at the Atp 500 level. Russia's Daniil Medvedev was the biggest beneficiary, pocketing $600,000 for topping the charts in that category.
