Mike Iupati, last name pronounced "yoo-PAH-tee", grew up in Vaitogi in American Samoa, a 1.25 square mile village with 1,400 people, and learned English as a second language. When Iupati moved to the U.S. prior to high school he lived with his parents and three siblings in an aunt's garage for six months before moving into a one bedroom apartment. Mike attended Western (Anaheim, CA) High School where he was a captain and earned All-State and all-conference honors as a senior. He had his No.78 retired at Western in March of 2015.
Iupati played in 35 games (33 starts) with Idaho and became just the second non-BCS conference player to be named a finalist for the Outland Trophy since the award's inception in 1946 as a senior. He started all 13 games at LG during his senior season in 2009, earning first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press, Football Writers of America, American Football Coaches Association, Walter Camp Football Foundation and Sports Illustrated.
Originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round (17th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. Agreed to a five-year contract with the Cardinals as an unrestricted free agent on 3/11/15. He and fellow first-round pick Anthony Davis started all 16 games together as rookies in 2010. They became just the third set of rookies to start every game on the offensive line since the 16-game schedule began in 1978 (Adam Meadows and Tarik Glenn, 1997 Colts; Nick Mangold and D'Brickashaw Ferguson, 2006 Jets).
